SUMMARY:From Underground to On the Grid
DESCRIPTION:Join Adrian Shelley\, Texas Office Director for Public Citizen\, as he delves into energy\, from underground to on the grid.  Texas has been an energy state for more than a century. But as the global energy market shifts away from fossil fuels and toward clean sources such as wind\, solar\, and battery storage\, Texas risks being left behind. At the start of the 21st century\, Texas pursued an all-of-the-above energy strategy that saw the largest investment in wind energy in history. More recently\, the fossil fuel industry has changed its tactics as it responds to the existential threat of climate change. Today we see political decision making that favors the entrenched business interests of the fossil fuel industry over average Texans. This explains why Texas lawmakers are not pursing common sense solutions to fixing Texas’ ailing electricity grid. These solutions include demand-side strategies such as energy efficiency and demand response\, which can stabilize our grid\, save consumers money\, and make homes more resilient to temperature extremes. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-underground-to-on-the-grid-tickets-737952103607. DESCRIPTION:June 2023 is the perfect time to refresh your advocacy knowledge and set goals for engaging your faith community around issues that impact the planet and its peoples. SUMMARY:Federal Incentives for Energy Efficiency and Renewables: Why They Matter to People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:We now have a wide window of opportunity to make real\, lasting changes for clean energy and reducing carbon pollution. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are investing billions of dollars to build clean energy sources\, electrify school buses\, cap orphaned wells\, and much\, much more.  In addition\, there are many incentives for households\, and houses of worship\, to invest in energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy.  People of faith therefore play a vital role in determining how federal funds are spent and the quality of the investments made. Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for Texas Interfaith Power & Light and Rebecca McIlwain\, Community Outreach Coordinator with Texas Climate Jobs Project\, will give an overview of the available federal grants/incentives and talk about what you can do to ensure the money is invested in a way that makes the most impact and promotes justice. Time for interactive Q&A with the speakers will be provided.  Please register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/federal-incentives-for-energy-efficiency-and-renewables-tickets-608800277017.  Texas Climate Jobs Project (TCJP) is a nonprofit organization that supports clean energy that is inclusive to everyone concerned and creates decent work opportunities that leave no one behind. Texas Interfaith Power & Light is the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Justice Interconnections: Climate\, Race\, Economy\, Health\, Migration & More
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is very real.  And we tend to oversimplify it.  In dealing with the climate crisis in a just manner\, it is imperative that we consider the many aspects of climate justice – racial justice\, economic justice\, health care justice\, climate migration justice\, and so much more.  Join retired United Methodist pastor\, the Rev. Mel Caraway\, as he leads us in an exploration of how all these divergent factors interconnect and make solving the climate crisis more complex. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Reconnecting Communities after a Natural Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Brett Perkison of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for a discussion of the effects that repeated record flooding due to climate change can have on local communities – often having more impact on lower socioeconomic communities who have less flood control measures put in place and have less resilience to recover from them due to financial constraints. Dr. Perkison will also focus on efforts of the local Houston community to improve resiliency through public advocacy – reviewing both the progress and the barriers that they have had encountered along the way. Interactive discussion with the virtual audience about how members of the Houston community can help to be better prepared for the next flooding event and how they can best assist their neighbors will be encouraged. SUMMARY:Faithful Voter Weekly Online Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith and conscience\, we believe elections are a referendum on the values that will shape our future. How can we renew our fragile democracy? How do we honor the human dignity of every person? Will we protect our Sacred Earth and our children’s future? What policies will prioritize the common good and confront future crises that remind us of our interdependence? Many of the defining moral issues of our time are on the ballot: faltering democratic institutions\, too much wealth in the hands of a few\, damage to the climate\, cruel immigration policies that tear families apart\, mass incarceration that devastates communities of color\, senseless gun violence\, and threats to global public health and security. These challenges are daunting. To move forward in a spirit of hope\, and to resist despair and cynicism\, join this weekly discussion group where we’ll navigate the urgent moral questions raised by the coming election\, allowing you to discern your path forward. Can’t make it every week? Join as you are able\, or for those topics most of interest to you. The topic for each week’s discussion is given below. All attendees receive an electronic copy of the Faithful Voter Reflection Guide from Interfaith Power & Light\, plus supplemental materials provided by the facilitator. SUMMARY:A Resilient Future for All Rests on Prioritizing the Most Vulnerable
DESCRIPTION:Join Kristen Schlemmer\, Legal Director at Bayou City Waterkeeper\, as she considers how disasters\, while affecting large portions of the Houston population\, impact the vulnerable more severely and why building resilience is critical.  Hurricane Harvey and Winter Storm Uri showed us that disasters increasingly affect large portions of our region’s population. While many of us are able to recover from these storms in a matter of weeks\, decades of underinvestment in our water systems and flood protection have left low-income communities especially vulnerable to the long-term effects of a single disaster. As we work toward a resilient future for all\, we must focus on those most affected by historic neglect\, as well as disaster over the long-term. If we emphasize justice for the most vulnerable among us\, we will secure resilience for all.  With science\, law\, and policy\, Bayou City Waterkeeper works with local communities to protect and restore natural systems\, achieve equitable policy solutions\, and systematically advance change to benefit all who live within the Lower Galveston Bay watershed encompassing the greater Houston area. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after Kristen’s talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:The Resilient Garden: Food Security in the Age of a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join Transition Houston as we explore the resilient garden and how to enhance food security in the age of this pandemic.\nThis will be Transition Houston’s first meeting by video conference using Zoom on August 4th @ 6pm!   \nIn order to join our meeting\, simply click this link in your web browser. We recommend testing your audio / video in advance of our meeting time. \nYou may also dial in using your phone. \nMeeting ID: 996 3115 5713Passcode: 834573One tap mobile+13462487799\,\,99631155713# US (Houston)+16699006833\,\,99631155713# US (San Jose) \nHouston is a very fortunate place!\nWe have diversity of population\, local farms\, Houston is a major port and transportation hub and we have abundance\, even in this once in a lifetime pandemic. \nBut the food supply is dangerously fragile. We depend on imports from around the world\, high carbon transportation systems to get our food to our grocery store\, high labor requirements for picking\, processing etc. And factory farms have put many small farmers out of business. \nIn the late 90’s there was a local food movement growing on the two coasts and it made its way here to the Gulf Coast. There were local advocates and leaders who led this movement forward and created a local food movement. Now local farms grow more food every year responding to restaurant chefs\, farmers’ markets\, local CSA’a and local grocery stores sell more local produce. \nAs the pandemic strips away our veneer of abundant\, cheap and convenient food\, we see that buying local and supporting local is the only answer in times of this economic and health panic. Shopping at the farmers’ markets and growing one’s own food is increasingly popular. \nAbout Our Speakers\nKevin Topek\, Permaculture Garden DesignerOwner of a sustainable landscaping and planning company\, Kevin has practiced Permaculture design for over 30 year and is a native of Houston. His website is permaculturedesign.net. \nTyler Horne\, Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market ManagerTyler has been Market Manager for 12 years with the main Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market near River Oaks. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and camping. \nLibby Kennedy\, Urban Harvest\, Director of Strategic ProjectsLibby has been with Urban Harvest for 6 years and is instrumental in planning the annual Fruit Tree Sale and the expansion of the Farmers’ Markets.

SUMMARY:Health Justice- Workers' Rights\, Work Life Balance and Being Good to Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Come to our gathering as we discuss health justice\, or how injustice and lack of action on various social justice issues worsens health outcomes and leads to higher health care costs.  For this month’s gathering\, we will discuss a few interrelated themes\, starting with labor and worker rights\, hostile work environments\, lack of work-life balance\, and its effect on health and health care costs.  Also to be discussed will be rethinking practices at schools and colleges with regard to extreme homework and study overloads\, and extreme busyness either imposed by other means such as city design\, or touted as a status symbol\, and why it is time to change our thinking and planning on this.  In living up to that ‘personal responsibility’ that proponents of our current immoral health care system love to ‘talk the talk’ about\, one of the best ways to really ‘walk the walk’ on this\, along with diet and exercise\, would be to re-evaluate not only our work environments and worker treatment\, but also look at how we can make it both feasible and fashionable to cut down on overwork and time overload from other areas of life.  I will give a brief presentation on these issues\, then open it up to all attendees to share their stories\, thoughts\, input\, suggestions\, etc. \n  \nMeeting will be held at: \nTarka Indian Kitchen\n721 W 19th St.\nHouston\, TX 77008

The film is both an expose of problems within the chocolate supply chain\, and an inspirational story of people trying to change the world they live in. \nCheck out the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7L9d2KR3qQ

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center.

SUMMARY:Get to Know the System that Oppresses Us - Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:There is much current attention to social and economic inequality. The Occupy movement did much to highlight the inequality and framed the issues as the 1% versus the 99%. Unfortunately\, the root cause of inequality is kept a deep secret – theft of surplus value created by workers. \nKarl Marx\, considered by current information scientists as the most influential scholar in history\, identified the source of wealth as stolen surplus value. His monumental work is entitled “Capital”. Join us as we go over the Marxist critique of Capitalism. Inequality\, wars\, racism and other social ills will no longer be a mystery. \nIt is not enough to be upset by social and economic inequality. We must understand it and struggle for socialism! This event is open to members and non-members alike. Hope to see you there.
