SUMMARY:Socialist Reading Group: Happy Birthday\, Karl Marx!
DESCRIPTION:Karl Marx has achieved a lasting global impact\, one that is greater and wider than any other philosopher before or afterwards. The Smithsonian Magazine published an article titled “Karl Marx Is the World’s Most Influential Scholar”. The article is based on a study and paper in Nature. Several information scientists from Indiana University Bloomington came to that conclusion based on how often Marx’s work was cited plus the number of works. \nAfter the global financial crisis of capitalism in 2008\, Marx was often cited to help explain the crisis. Marx is relevant because his work is based on science and an advanced method of critical analysis in philosophy and economics. \nWe need Marx now more than ever to help explain the nature of capitalism and the internal dynamics of its own destruction. Join us for a discussion on Marx’s legacy and contributions.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency.  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 49th  anniversary of Earth Day. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center. \n

SUMMARY:Socialist Reading Group: "The Essence of Capitalism - Stolen Surplus Value!"
DESCRIPTION:The essence of capitalism remains a deliberate hidden mystery. It is hard to justify the theft of value created by others – “surplus value”. For this reason\, euphemisms are used to put lipstick on the capitalist pig: “free enterprise”\, “free market”\, “entrepreneurship”\, etc. \nIn this discussion\, we will focus on the Marxist Theory of Surplus Value. This theory provides the economic basis to understanding the basic contradiction of capitalism – social production and private appropriation\, leading to overproduction and underconsumption. \nJoin us for some good food and lively discussion. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:March against Trump\, Sexism\, Racism\,Class Exploitation\, and War
DESCRIPTION:During his first year in office\, Trump has proved to be the most brazen white supremacist\, misogynistic\, and anti-working class U.S. president in decades. He has praised Nazis in Charlottesville\, encouraged police brutality\, stopped federal oversight of murderous police departments\, slandered Black athlete/activists\, pardoned the anti-Hispanic former Sheriff Joe Arpaio\, ended DACA\, increased arrests of migrants\, begun planning a wall on the southern border\, and tried to implement a Muslim travel ban. \nTrump has stopped funding comprehensive global family planning programs\, appointed anti-choice federal judges\, supported an alleged child molester in a recent Senate race\, tried to drive trans people out of the military\, sought to gut legal protections for workers and consumers\, supported a $1 trillion-plus reduction in taxes for capitalists\, ended U.S. participation in the Paris climate accords\, sent U.S. military forces to Syria\, increased drone bombing in other countries\, and threatened to attack North Korea. \nIt is imperative to drive Trump and his supporters from power now. But we all need to recognize that Trump is only the symptom of a grave underlying disease–and that disease is capitalism. Voting for centrist or liberal “lesser-evil” Democrats is not enough. Only the masses of people can put an end to \n* the Trump-Pence regime\n* patriarchy\, homophobia\, and transphobia\n* white supremacy\, xenophobia\, and the persecution of immigrants\n* the exploitation of workers\n* political repression and police brutality\n* nuclear threats and imperialist wars \nand open the door to fundamental social change. \nA march against Trump\, Sexism\, Racism\, Class Exploitation\, and War will be held on Saturday\, January 20. We will assemble at 1 pm (after the Houston Women’s March is over) in Hermann Square\, 900 Smith St.\, between the Reflecting Pool and the mid-block exit to Smith St. Beginning at 1:30 pm\, we will march down Smith St. to the Leland Federal Building at 1919 Smith St. The rally at the Leland Federal Building will include speakers\, musicians\, spoken word artists\, a Trump piñata\, chants\, and more. \nThis action is being organized by Brown Berets de TejAztlan\, Houston Socialist Movement\, Justice 4 All\, Party for Socialism and Liberation\, and Refuse Fascism (list in formation). If your organization would like to help with this event or if you would like more information\, please call 832.692.2306 or 832.438.3785. We hope to see you on January 20. All power to the people!

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency and to support “Buy Nothing Day\,” a national effort to provide alternatives to the media driven consumerism of “Black Friday.”  This also offers the community an opportunity to share in the Quaker testimonies of simplicity\, stewardship\, and community by creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community. \nWe will also share a meal of left-overs from Thanksgiving feasts\, so all attendees are invited to bring left overs to share. \nTo get involved\, just come.  Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).  Bring some food to share\, if you wish. At the end of the day\, whatever is left on the free table will be donated to the women’s center. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods.  The purpose of this event is to challenge those who choose to participate to NOT SHOP or BUY anything on this day after Thanksgiving.

SUMMARY:Houston Anarchist Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:Announcing the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair! On Sunday September 24\, 2017\, Houston Anarchist Black Cross will host a one-day convergence to network\, grow\, and celebrate anarchist and anti-authoritarian projects in Texas and the surrounding region. Join us for books\, workshops\, and discussion to celebrate and expand our southern radical communities of resistance! \nWe welcome proposals for workshops\, panels\, film screenings and the like\, and especially encourage people from Texas\, neighboring states\, and the south and southwest/la frontera generally to submit proposals. Proposals are due August 1 and can be submitted on the form at http://www.houstonanarchistbookfair2017.wordpress.com \nWe will also have opportunities for publishers\, distros\, bookstores and others to table. If you’d like to volunteer\, get in touch with us at htxanarchistbookfair2017@gmail.com and tell us a little bit about yourself and what aspect you’re interested in helping with. \nThe event is free\, with no registration required. We are committed to making this a safe\, welcoming space for all people who are genuinely interested in the Anarchist Bookfair\, including gender diverse folks\, people with disabilities\, parents\, children\, femmes\, women and people of color. If you experience harassment\, abuse\, assault\, or any other kind of violation during the book fair\, or if someone who has engaged in such behavior in the past is adversely affecting your participation at the book fair\, or if you need support for any other reason\, please do reach out to us at htxanarchistbookfair2017@gmail.com. \nFAQ \nQ: Can I participate if I am not an anarchist? \nA: Absolutely! Whether you are a communist or other type of radical looking to network with like-minded people\, or simply curious to learn more about anarchism and radical projects going on in Houston and the region\, we want to welcome everyone who is genuine in their interest in the bookfair. On the other hand\, fascists\, cops\, trolls\, and others who only wish to subvert the purpose of the book fair are most decidedly not welcome. \nQ: What is anarchism anyway? \nA: We’re sure that every anarchist at the bookfair would offer a different\, and at times divergent\, definition of anarchism. But here’s one quick definition! \nAnarchism is a set of revolutionary political ideas which seek a fundamental transformation of society toward expansive visions of individual and social freedom. Within this is a comprehensive critique and rejection of all forms of hierarchy and structured relationships of domination–including the State\, capitalism\, white supremacy\, patriarchy and hetero-sexism–as well as visions of a free society built on human freedom\, equality\, solidarity\, and mutual aid. \nQ: Why a book fair? \nA: Anarchists around the world have long organized bookfairs as spaces to gather\, share ideas\, and network. In the age of e-readers and digital\, online organizing\, the idea of a bookfair may sound anachronistic. But we believe that much of the power that our political movements have and can build grows out of the relationships we have with one another–as individuals\, organizations\, and communities. And when it comes to building relationships\, there is really no substitute for face to face interaction\, sharing space\, and learning and working together. We hope to facilitate that with the workshops\, presentations\, and discussions that are being planned\, and the space that we create. There will also certainly be plenty of books\, pamphlets\, t-shirts\, and stickers available! As the late Texas-born anarchist Lucy Parsons said\, “Anarchists know that a long period of education must precede any great fundamental change in society\, hence they do not believe in vote begging\, nor political campaigns\, but rather in the development of self-thinking individuals.” \nQ: Why now? \nA: The United States has long been a terrifying landscape for many across the world–a white-supremacist\, settler-colonialist\, capitalist\, hetero-patriarchy. The rise of the Trump regime and the grassroots fascist right has stripped away much of the old window dressing and intensified the myriad attacks on people of color\, women\, poor people\, queer and trans people\, Muslims and Jews\, migrants\, and others. Millions want to begin fighting back or redouble their efforts. \nThose who are newer to the resistance might be looking to get plugged in\, learn new skills\, and sharpen their analysis. Those who have been in the game for a minute might be looking to find new inspiration\, new camaraderie\, new creativity\, and fresh perspective. All of us are looking for ways to move forward together in dark times. Our gatherings are more important now than ever. \nQ: Why Houston? \nA: Texas\, and especially Houston\, has a well-earned reputation for being the epicenter of the U.S. petrochemical industry\, the locus of reactionary political movements that were laughed at until they came to power\, and the home state of several war criminal presidents. Usually thought of as backward or irredeemable rather than hip\, radical\, or enlightened\, the whole region is often overlooked by much of the U.S. left that is concentrated on either coast. \nBut there is–and always has been–resistance here too: from the Black soldiers at Fort Logan who went to war against the police and Jim Crowe in 1917\, to the neighborhood that rebelled in 1977 when the cops who murdered Joe Campos Torres got off with a $1 fine; from hosting the first National Chicana Conference in 1971\, to hosting the National Women’s Conference (and the radical feminist protests outside of it!) in 1977; from direct actions against war profiteer Halliburton and logging company Maxxam in 2004-05 to resistance to the Tar Sands blockade against the Keystone XL pipeline a couple years ago; from the 2003 Radical Encuentro Camp to the 2011 Houston Anarchist Bookfair. Resistance in the belly of the beast has always been strong! \nTrue\, Houston has never had as large of a radical community as some places\, nor as many resources. But we’ve always forged ahead with the utmost spirit\, creativity\, and tenacity. In this tradition\, we are proud to welcome anarchists and other radicals from across the region to the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair!

SUMMARY:Socialist Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:“Does the Working Class Need Its Own Political Party?” \nMost ideological discussion on the working class movement towards socialism pivots around the issue of a revolutionary party. Is a revolutionary party necessary or only a coalition electoral party? What does history tell us about this? Has socialism (working class in full power) ever been built in the absence of such a political party? We will be discussing Marx\, Engels\, and Lenin on the need for and role of a revolutionary party. \nJoin us every other Tuesday at Cafe Express in River Oaks! We are the longest-running progressive reading group in Harris County and would love to have you at our next meet up.

SUMMARY:13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Cardoza\, an afro-indigenous feminist leader from Honduras\, is coming to Houston on May 22\, together with Honduran singer-songwriter Karla Lara\, as part of a tour of the U.S. promoting the new bilingual Spanish-English edition of Melissa’s book\, 13 colores de la resistencia hondureña / 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance. \nThe book tells the stories of several women who were involved in the massive movement of resistance that arose after the coup d’état that took place in Honduras in 2009. The coup unleashed conditions of greatly increased corruption and impunity. The violence and harms stemming from this have not diminished to this day. \nAlicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter Network comments: \n<<13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. These stories of bravery\, of struggle and pain\, and ultimately of a resilience rooted in a love for freedom will grip your heart. Cardoza is brilliant in storytelling\, and ensures that\, in memory of our sister Berta Cáceres\, feminisms are three dimensional and span multiple experiences—trans\, Black\, elderly\, and more. The lessons contained in these stories offer important reflections for all revolutionaries.>> \nThe book’s English translator\, Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle writes: \n<<Melissa calls those the times “when protests were poetry in the streets.” Few people could better turn that poetry in the streets into prose on the page than she. A fearless journalist in the most dangerous country in the world for a reporter\, a lesbian in a land where LGBT people regularly turn up as cadavers in the streets\, an activist in a place where the faces of the disappeared line countless walls\, an afro-indigenous woman in a region where racism continues to take a deadly toll\, Melissa is a writer who knows the meaning of resistance.>> \nAt the event\, Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara will perform stories from the book using a mixed-media format of storytelling\, acting and song. That will be followed by discussion about the situation in Honduras\, Berta Cáceres\, her legacy and #JusticeforBerta campaign\, and transnational movement-connections. \nBoth were close friends of the late Berta Cáceres\, who was assassinated a year ago\, and led COPINH (http://copinhenglish.blogspot.com/)\, a resistance movement of the indigenous Lenca people of western Honduras that has stopped dams\, mines\, and other destructive “projects of death” as Berta called them. \nRelated links: \nTour info: http://ggjalliance.org/book-tour-2017-13-colors-honduran-resistance \nA poetic and musical presentation by Melissa Cardoza (in Spanish):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruEmqjnZhKE \nPlease come and invite your friends to join in this unique experience!

SUMMARY:How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We can do about it
DESCRIPTION:The BAUUC Service and Justice Ministry (SJM) invite all to hear acclaimed author and scholar Chuck Collins discuss\, “How wealth inequality is wrecking the world and what we can do about it”.  The event is scheduled for March 22nd\, 7 to 9PM \nThe year Chuck Collins turned 16\, his father took him aside for a man-to-man talk. Edward Collins told his son that he had set up a substantial trust fund for him.\nChuck remembers feeling utter amazement. The great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and an heir to the wiener fortune\, he had grown up living comfortably\, but not lavishly\, in suburban Detroit. Now\, as his father spelled out\, he realized he would not have to work for money unless he wanted to. His dad also stressed his hope that the money would not change his son or his life goals. It didn’t. However\, events took a very different course from the one the elder Collins had so carefully planned. Ten years later\, in 1985\, Chuck Collins gave away every penny of his inheritance\, nearly half a million dollars\, to foundations and groups that he knew needed funding—organizations working for the environment\, peace\, racial equality\, and indigenous and gay people’s rights.\nChuck Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and directs IPS’s Program on Inequality and the Common Good where he co-edits He is an expert on U.S. inequality and author of several books\, including 99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It.\nHe is co-author with Bill Gates Sr. of Wealth and Our Commonwealth\, (Beacon Press\, 2003)\, a case for taxing inherited fortunes. He is co-author with Mary Wright of The Moral Measure of the Economy\, a book about Christian ethics and economic life. His new book is Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality\, Bringing Wealth Home\, and Committing to the Common Good (Chelsea Green\, Sept. 2016).\nHe is co-founder of Wealth for the Common Good\, a network of business leaders\, high-income households and partners working together to promote shared prosperity and fair taxation. This network merged in 2015 with the Patriotic Millionaires.\nIn 1995\, he co-founded United for a Fair Economy (UFE) to raise the profile of the inequality issue and support popular education and organizing efforts to address inequality. He was Executive Director of UFE from 1995-2001 and Program Director until 2005.

Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods\, although monetary donations may be made to Live Oak Friends Meeting House for the use of their space. \n  \n

We are America.” states the membership of Indivisible Houston. \nThe March will begin at 3:00 PM with speakers from diverse advocacy groups united by those interconnected issues and articulating true American values. \nThe march will stop at various locations that represent the different levels of government and how they impact seemingly disparate communities. \nSince inauguration\, communities across the United States have sprung into action. With protests at airports like IAH turning the tide in American opinion against policies such as the Muslim ban\, the true numbers of the resistance are making themselves heard. Now is the time to protect the rights\, safety\, and health of Houstonians and all Americans at the local\, state\, and federal level. Marginalized groups are under fire and respected American institutions on the chopping block. Average citizens at the grassroots level are who will save this country. \nResist\,\nIndivisible Houston

SUMMARY:HPJC 2016 Peacemaker Awards Dinner with Sonia Nazario
DESCRIPTION:Join peace and justice activists from the southeast Texas area in our 2016 celebration of peacemakers. The reservation deadline was Nov. 7\, and the meal counts have already been turned into the hotel\, so no more reservations can be accepted. \nOur national peacemaker and keynote speaker for 2016 is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sonia Nazario\, author of bestseller Enrique’s Journey\, a true story about a young Honduran boy’s search for his mother who left home to find work in the US to pay for food for her starving family. The story is representative of thousands of children who endure similar struggles\, many of whom die while trying to reach their mothers. Read Nazario’s LA Times articles that led to her Pulitzer Prize.  Nazario’s latest article in the NY Times in English or en Español. \nOur local peacemaker awardees\, who will also tell us about their activities\, are: \n\nAshton Woods is an activist in the Black Lives Matter and SGL/GLBT rights movements\, and works tirelessly for equality and to end racism and gender discrimination.  He describes himself as a gay\, atheist\, HIV-positive and “unapologetically black” man who believes that justice must be intersectional.  While none of these things completely define Woods\, they highlight the multiple dimensions that help define his justice work.\nJackie Young\, executive director of Texas Health and Environment Alliance and leader of the San Jacinto River Coalition. See her recent Houston Chronicle op-ed on the San Jacinto waste pits\, a Texans Together feature article about her\, and a Houston Press article about her and her family’s struggle with the effects of the river’s waste pits\, which are now among the top Superfund sites in the US. Also see the Houston Chronicle’s Nick Anderson editorial cartoon series on Jackie and the waste pits: part 1\, part 2\nBren Hardt\, long-time peace activist with Fellowship of Reconciliation\, Creating a Culture of Peace\, Board of Church and Society – Peace with Justice Program of the United Methodist Church\, and Houston Non-Violent Communication (NVC). Bren has initiated and organized training and informational programs for other activist to develop the skills and understanding in ourselves that we need to build a peaceful and just world.\n\nA special recognition will also given to Casa Juan Diego\, that has served immigrants and the poor in Houston for many years. \nLocation\, parking\, How to get there: \nThe festivities will be at the Hilton Hotel on the campus of the University of Houston. Check-in\, with a cash bar and social hour for everyone attending the dinner\, is from 6-7 pm. The dinner and program start at 7 pm. Parking is available in the garage under the UH Hilton Hotel – note that there are TWO parking levels there\, so if the first is full\, go down to the lower level.  There is a UH football game in the afternoon of the dinner\, and fans may be leaving it as people arrive for our dinner\, so allow for some extra time due to traffic. We will have discount parking passes for the UH Hilton garage for $5\, at the dinner check-in area. There is also parking across the street in the UH Welcome Center parking garage (just east of the hotel)\, but it may cost as much as the discounted Hilton garage tickets. \nIt’s also easy to ride Metrorail’s Purple Line to the University of Houston\, and then you won’t have to worry about parking at all. It runs every 12 minutes in both directions on Saturday. The UH South/University Oaks stop is closest to the UH Hilton. \n Map and directions \nAdditional donations not only support the work of HPJC to promote peace and justice\, but also allow us to invite activists of slender means who would not otherwise be able to attend. If you can’t come\, you may join or donate to HPJC instead\, so support our work for peace and justice. Wally James of KPFT plans to record Sonia Nazario’s talk\, and at least that part of our program may be broadcast later on his show\, the Progressive Forum\, Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 pm.
