DESCRIPTION:There is much current attention to social and economic inequality. The Occupy movement did much to highlight the inequality and framed the issues as the 1% versus the 99%. Unfortunately\, the root cause of inequality is kept a deep secret – theft of surplus value created by workers. \nKarl Marx\, considered by current information scientists as the most influential scholar in history\, identified the source of wealth as stolen surplus value. His monumental work is entitled “Capital”. Join us as we go over the Marxist critique of Capitalism. Inequality\, wars\, racism and other social ills will no longer be a mystery. \nIt is not enough to be upset by social and economic inequality. We must understand it and struggle for socialism! DESCRIPTION:Join us in Houston for the first stop of Stories of Survival Tour. From the the Gulf South to Puerto Rico Stories of Survival will bring community together to learn\, deepen connections\, and share stories about community-centered solutions and strategies for survival in the face of climate change. Coinciding with observances of the devastating disasters during hurricane season that continually impact our home places\, the tour will include FREE solar-powered “Cine Solar” film screenings\, community dinners\, storytelling\, collective visioning\, and other unique artistic and cultural offerings. \nStories of Survival is being hosted by a collaborative of grassroots groups\, organizers\, media-makers\, artists and activists acting at the frontlines of climate\, including Another Gulf Is Possible Collaborative\, Bridge The Gulf\, Defend Puerto Rico\, Sierra Club\, Texas Housers\, West Street Recovery\, and Working Films\, among others. \nStories of Survival will close out the Hurricane Harvey Peoples Tribunal\, a two day event on August 24th and 25th\, in which residents\, community leaders\, and experts will testify and imagine creative solutions that could move Houston toward becoming more resilient to future climate disasters. DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. \nIn August\, we welcome Richard Johnson\, Director of Sustainability for Rice University. Richard holds a B.S. in civil engineering and a Masters in Urban & Environmental Planning. He has been working on sustainability initiatives at Rice since 2004. Rice University’s Administrative Center for Sustainability and Energy Management provides support for a broad range of campus sustainability initiatives\, such as planning for sustainability\, green building\, energy & water conservation\, recycling\, environmental education\, public lectures & events\, student environmental projects\, research partnerships\, and classroom engagement. Their efforts to “green” the campus include such areas as food\, transportation\, green cleaning\, grounds\, water\, recycling\, and buildings.
