In these sacred spaces\, we experience nature and the Divine alike. National parks also afford us the time and space to consider our relationship with nature and how our individual and collective actions have a decided impact on these complex\, wondrous ecosystems that we are sharing. Innovative Funding Strategies and Opportunities for Community Resilience” \nOn Wednesday\, September 12\, HARC will continue its People & Nature Speaker Series hosting an evening conversation with six national thought leaders on the topic of innovative resilience financing and the role that the public and private sectors can play to develop new community partnerships and diversified resilience funding mechanisms in Greater Houston. \nMore people are moving to the Houston-Galveston region every year while a decade of hurricanes\, floods and historic drought underscores the risks to the region’s future prosperity. Implementing strategies and projects to make Houston economically attractive\, while increasing resilience requires local investment. Public funds from federal\, state and local government source play an important role in rebuilding communities and infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:Hartman Park                                                    9311 E Avenue P\nHouston\, Texas 77012 \nTEJAS(Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) has issued a call to action and Houston DSA EcoSocialists are responding!  \nValero has asked the TCEQ(Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) for an increase in the level of HYDROGEN CYANIDE emissions they can release\, specifically 512 tons. Valero also wants to stop tracking its BENZENE emissions reductions\, makes no sense right?  \nSo then let’s show up in solidarity with Manchester residents and tell TCEQ and Valero that we’re sick(literally) of disgustingly rich corporations killing everything on the planet in their pursuit of more wealth and power.  \nDemand that TCEQ say NO to Valero! \n-Hydrogen cyanide (AC) is a systemic chemical asphyxiant. It interferes with the normal use of oxygen by nearly every organ of the body. Exposure to hydrogen cyanide (AC) can be rapidly fatal. It has whole-body (systemic) effects\, particularly affecting those organ systems most sensitive to low oxygen levels: the central nervous system (brain)\, the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels)\, and the pulmonary system (lungs). Hydrogen cyanide (AC) is a chemical warfare agent (military designation\, AC). It is used commercially for fumigation\, electroplating\, mining\, chemical synthesis\, and the production of synthetic fibers\, plastics\, dyes\, and pesticides. Hydrogen cyanide (AC) gas has a distinctive bitter almond odor (others describe a musty “old sneakers smell”)\, but a large proportion of people cannot detect it; the odor does not provide adequate warning of hazardous concentrations. It also has a bitter burning taste and is often used as a solution in water. \n(from the CDC) \n-Benzene is known to cause cancer\, based on evidence from studies in both people and lab animals. The link between benzene and cancer has largely focused on leukemia and other cancers of blood cells.  \nLong-term exposure to benzene mainly harms the bone marrow\, the soft\, inner parts of bones where new blood cells are made. This can result in: Anemia (a low red blood cell count)\, which can cause a person to feel weak and tired. A low white blood cell count\, which can lower the body’s ability to fight infections and might even be life-threatening. A low blood platelet count\, which can lead to excess bruising and bleeding. \nBreathing in high doses of benzene can affect the nervous system\, which can lead to drowsiness\, dizziness\, headaches\, tremors\, confusion\, and/or unconsciousness. Consuming foods or fluids contaminated with high levels of benzene can cause vomiting\, stomach irritation\, dizziness\, sleepiness\, convulsions\, and rapid heart rate. In extreme cases\, inhaling or swallowing very high levels of benzene can be deadly. Exposure to benzene liquid or vapor can irritate the skin\, eyes\, and throat. Skin exposure to benzene can result in redness and blisters.  \n(from the ACS)

SUMMARY:No Nuclear Waste in Our Community!
DESCRIPTION:PROTECT TEXAS FROM RADIOACTIVE WASTE TOUR – PLEASE JOIN US! \nTexas is at risk. Communities across the state are coming together\, concerned about an issue that will affect our communities\, our future generations\, and the wonderful state we call home. We are concerned about high-level nuclear reactor waste that could come through our communities and be dumped on Texas for decades to come. \nDeadly radioactive waste could come through our cities and rural lands\, headed to two proposed sites. The Consolidated Interim Storage project of Waste Control Specialists (WCS) and ORANO seeks to store 40\,000 tons of high-level radioactive waste in Andrews\, Texas. Holtec proposes a similar high-level radioactive waste storage project for 173\,000 tons of spent fuel just a short distance from Texas\, across the New Mexico border. \nEach rail car would carry as much plutonium as was in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The capacity of these sites would allow for more than all nuclear the nuclear reactor waste that has been produced in the entire country\, plus all that will likely be produced in the future and it would require over 20 years to get it all here. \nImporting high-level radioactive waste to either site\, waste that will remain dangerous for millennia\, puts our children and future generations at risk from transport accidents and potential contamination. If these projects go forward\, Houstonians are at risk for exposure to radioactive nuclear waste. \nThe public comment period ends October 19th. Learn more and discuss options for action at a community meeting\, Monday\, September 24th at 7 pm at True Love Missionary Baptist Church\, 4029 Falls Street\, Houston TX 77026. \nWe won’t allow our community to be contaminated with this waste – will you join us? DESCRIPTION:Hosted By the Green Building Resource Center \nTuesday\, September 25th\, 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM \n1002 Washington Avenue\, Houston\, Texas 77002 \nPresented by the University of Texas – Arlington’s Zero Waste Network in cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency\, Earth Day ATX\, Public Citizen\, GBRC and A Nurtured World. \nWhat if disasters were our biggest opportunity to rebuild society in a sustainable and equitable way? The latest models for the Texas coast predict changes that will affect our lives\, and the way we plan for the future. This workshop will focus on the opportunities to engage powerfully in one of the most important issues of our time. We will also explore the unique disruptive opportunities for change. For over a decade the Zero Waste Network has been training individuals and organizations save money\, protect the environment\, and improve resilience and preparedness in the face of an uncertain future. Working in partnership with state agencies\, the federal government\, universities and non-profits we helped develop a series of trainings to help individuals: 1) Identify the key environmental issues that affect them; 2) Reduce their impact; 3) Save money; 4) Improve quality of life. \nAttendees report significant savings and environmental improvements: \nLearn how your spending and environmental impacts are connected\, so you can save money. Develop strategies to build your personal resilience and preparedness for the future. Participants report saving an average of $2\,700 per year and up to $20\,000 per year. SUMMARY:China’s National Sword Policy & It’s Impacts on Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. In September\, we welcome Jordan Fengel\, Executive Director of STAR (State of Texas Alliance for Recycling).  For nearly 50 years\, recycling has been a staple practice throughout many American communities. A recent policy change by the Chinese government in 2017\, enacted in 2018\, banning many recyclable materials from being imported\, has created a conundrum in the recycling industry. The US has relied on China to process our mixed plastic and mixed paper recyclables for the last 20+ years. With China set to eliminate all imports of recyclable materials by 2020\, Jordan will discuss what STAR is doing to turn the tide. He will explain how STAR sees this crisis more as a fantastic opportunity to build American processing and manufacturing markets that have been long needed.
