SUMMARY:Buddhism and the Ecological Challenge
DESCRIPTION:David Loy\, professor\, Buddhist activist and author\, leads a workshop and study group on Buddhism and the Ecological Crisis. Houston Zen Center is honored to host this important thinker and activist. \nThe ecological crisis – which includes global warming but is much bigger than that – is the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced. What does Buddhism offer\, if anything\, that can help us understand and respond appropriately? And what does ecological crisis mean for how we understand and practice Buddhism (or any spiritual path) today? Among other things\, we will reflect together on the parallels between our perennial individual predicament (according to traditional Buddhism) and our collective predicament today in relation to the biosphere. What does this all imply about how we understand the bodhisattva path? What does it mean to be an “ecosattva”? \nDavid is a prolific author\, whose essays and books have been translated into many languages. His articles appear regularly in the pages of major journals such as Tikkun and Buddhist magazines including Tricycle\, Turning Wheel\, Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma\, as well as in a variety of scholarly journals. He is also on the advisory boards of Buddhist Global Relief\, the Clear View Project\, Zen Peacemakers\, and the Ernest Becker Foundation. \nThe workshop may culminate in joining a group in Houston celebrating Earth Day.

SUMMARY:How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We can do about it
DESCRIPTION:The BAUUC Service and Justice Ministry (SJM) invite all to hear acclaimed author and scholar Chuck Collins discuss\, “How wealth inequality is wrecking the world and what we can do about it”.  The event is scheduled for March 22nd\, 7 to 9PM \nThe year Chuck Collins turned 16\, his father took him aside for a man-to-man talk. Edward Collins told his son that he had set up a substantial trust fund for him.\nChuck remembers feeling utter amazement. The great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and an heir to the wiener fortune\, he had grown up living comfortably\, but not lavishly\, in suburban Detroit. Now\, as his father spelled out\, he realized he would not have to work for money unless he wanted to. His dad also stressed his hope that the money would not change his son or his life goals. It didn’t. However\, events took a very different course from the one the elder Collins had so carefully planned. Ten years later\, in 1985\, Chuck Collins gave away every penny of his inheritance\, nearly half a million dollars\, to foundations and groups that he knew needed funding—organizations working for the environment\, peace\, racial equality\, and indigenous and gay people’s rights.\nChuck Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and directs IPS’s Program on Inequality and the Common Good where he co-edits He is an expert on U.S. inequality and author of several books\, including 99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It.\nHe is co-author with Bill Gates Sr. of Wealth and Our Commonwealth\, (Beacon Press\, 2003)\, a case for taxing inherited fortunes. He is co-author with Mary Wright of The Moral Measure of the Economy\, a book about Christian ethics and economic life. His new book is Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality\, Bringing Wealth Home\, and Committing to the Common Good (Chelsea Green\, Sept. 2016).\nHe is co-founder of Wealth for the Common Good\, a network of business leaders\, high-income households and partners working together to promote shared prosperity and fair taxation. This network merged in 2015 with the Patriotic Millionaires.\nIn 1995\, he co-founded United for a Fair Economy (UFE) to raise the profile of the inequality issue and support popular education and organizing efforts to address inequality. He was Executive Director of UFE from 1995-2001 and Program Director until 2005.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency. The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community. Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s). CHILDREN ARE WELCOME! Children are often the best models of how this can work. They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them. Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods\, although monetary donations may be made to Live Oak Friends Meeting House for the use of their space. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Spring Break trip! Info and signup here.\n\nThe Society of Native Nations\, Big Bend Defense Coalition\, and others resisting the Trans Pecos Pipeline near Big Bend.  The Two Rivers Camp is setup near Marfa Texas and has been carrying out direct actions for a few weeks\, as part of a larger 2 year resistance against the pipeline.\n \nThis is the last stand\, as the pipeline is scheduled to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2017.  As an elder said\, even stopping the last connecting 10 feet is stopping the pipeline.\n \nOf the 10 indigenous environmental struggles\, this has been slated as the priority for 2017.\nhttp://www.alternet.org/environment/10-indigenous-and-environmental-struggles-and-how-you-can-help-2017\n\nKey points:\n– Several ancient burial grounds have already been desecrated along the route\n– Mexico has discovered large quantities of natural gas underground\, yet Energy Transfer Partners has teamed up Comisión Federal de Electricidad to bring massive amounts of gas from Texas fracking fields to Mexico\n– Desert landscapes take hundreds of years to rebuild\n– Small leaks can lead to large fires that can wipe out vast acreage and kill livestock and people\n– Land has been taken from ranchers and reportedly farmers in Mexico have been killed in the process\n\nElders say that the most needed items now are:\n \n1. Money to help post bail for nonviolent protesters\nhttps://fundrazr.com/81C2nb\n\nhttp://societyofnativenations.org/donate.html\n \n2. Attorneys willing to do pro-bono work for those arrested\n \n3. SUMMARY:We the People Connect the Dots - Citizens to Rally and March Against Tyranny
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE\nContacts: \nDaniel Cohen: (832) 489-7643\nEgberto Willies: (281) 826-6979\nwww.facebook.com/indivisiblehouston/\nwww.indivisiblehouston.org \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nWe the People Connect the Dots\nCitizens to Rally and March Against Tyranny in Downtown Houston \nHouston\, TX – (February 13\, 2017) – Most years\, this weekend would be dedicated to the power of the President. This year on Sunday\, February 19\, “We the People Connect the Dots” march against tyranny and ongoing attacks on social justice and civil rights. \nInstead of honoring our current President on this holiday\, we honor the American people and the values that hundreds of thousands of us are fighting for. We are democracy. We are patriots. We are America.” states the membership of Indivisible Houston. \nThe March will begin at 3:00 PM with speakers from diverse advocacy groups united by those interconnected issues and articulating true American values. \nThe march will stop at various locations that represent the different levels of government and how they impact seemingly disparate communities. \nSince inauguration\, communities across the United States have sprung into action. With protests at airports like IAH turning the tide in American opinion against policies such as the Muslim ban\, the true numbers of the resistance are making themselves heard. Now is the time to protect the rights\, safety\, and health of Houstonians and all Americans at the local\, state\, and federal level. Marginalized groups are under fire and respected American institutions on the chopping block. Average citizens at the grassroots level are who will save this country. \nResist\,\nIndivisible Houston

SUMMARY:Kimchi and Fermented Vegetables
DESCRIPTION:Come learn the ancient art of fermentation! It’s a way to preserve food\, harvest probiotics\, spread food cultures\, and get creative with your food. In this introductory class\, we will cover the basics of the fermentation process\, taste homemade ferments\, and you will make and take home a mason jar of your first vegetable ferment! Your gut is already thanking you. The class is based on the teachings of Sandor Katz’ book Wild Fermentation\, an essential reference for budding home fermenters. This class will use locally grown produce whenever possible\, meaning that the vegetables we ferment in class will change by the season! We have fermented cabbage\, beets\, carrots\, daikon radish\, green beans\, turnips\, mustard greens\, and more. These nutritious goods have been flavored with dill\, fennel\, oranges\, garlic\, and ginger. Come see what’s in season and make your own combination! \n10% of the proceeds to this class go to AIDA and Survival International. Two organizations that champion tribal peoples and defend their land and culture. As we celebrate their wisdom in our class we will also be sending support for their cultural practices to continue. \nScholarships are available. SUMMARY:Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Houston festival is a selection of films from the 4-day festival held each year in Nevada City\, CA\, by the watershed advocacy group\, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL). Their National Partners—Patagonia\, CLIF Bar\, Earthjustice\,Sierra Nevada Brewing\, Klean Kanteen\, Orion Magazine\, Barefoot Wine\, and KEEN—help make the festival available to environmentally conscious groups across the country. Hosting The Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Tour helps the CEC illustrate the Earth’s beauty\, the challenges facing our planet\, and the work communities are doing to protect our environment. The festival is a natural extension of CEC’s work to inspire people to act. \nThe Festival consists of 24 short documentary films which speak to the environmental concerns and celebrations of our planet. Different films will be shown each night\, and each night will include a local environmental story. Topics range from astonishing adventure and the beauty of the great outdoors to grass roots efforts to combat environmental injustice and other serious issues. \nTickets are per night and start at $15 for members who buy tickets in advance to $20 at the door.

SUMMARY:Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training
DESCRIPTION:Building on the momentum from COP 21\, The Climate Reality Project will be conducting an intensive three-day training\, led by its Chairman Al Gore\, running August 16–18 in Texas. The training will bring together pioneers\, change agents\, and proven leaders from across business\, government\, and civil society sectors to enable participants to develop the skills\, relationships\, and connections to help implement the agreement reached in Paris. \nThe Texas training will be the 33rd Climate Reality Leadership Corps training\, and will welcome hundreds more leaders to the network. It will address the impacts that climate change is already having on the state\, from droughts to floods\, as well as the intersection between climate change risk and Texas’ more vulnerable populations. Sessions will also address renewable energy in Texas\, including the growth of wind energy\, and the enormous potential for solar. \nIn December 2015\, leaders from over 190 governments met in Paris for the UN’s COP 21 climate talks to create a historic agreement to limit the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change and keep average planet-wide temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to keep warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The conference marked a global turning point on climate change\, not only for the extraordinary agreement that world leaders reached in Paris\, but also for the unprecedented number of citizens speaking up all around the world\, demanding bold action to address the climate crisis and making this landmark agreement possible. \nWorking alongside partners throughout the climate community\, Climate Reality’s trained activists and supporters were instrumental in engaging and mobilizing millions worldwide to speak up for a strong agreement at COP 21 long before negotiators arrived in Paris. And at the heart of this effort were members of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps\, a global network of activists and influencers founded by Climate Reality Chairman and former US Vice President Al Gore. With the 2006 release of his Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth\, Vice President Gore created a new approach to climate outreach\, speaking directly to audiences – as one concerned citizen to another – about the reality of climate disruption and how we can solve it. The result was a message that inspired people everywhere to take action and launched a new global climate movement. \nToday\, the Climate Reality Leadership Corps builds on this legacy by taking great leaders and making them exceptional through a training program that provides world-class instruction in climate science\, communications\, and organizing.\n• Gain an understanding of the climate policy landscape and its implications for Texas and other vulnerable regions following COP 21 in Paris;\n• Learn skills and strategies for delivering cutting-edge climate science\, public speaking\, organizing\, and media engagement in the twenty first century;\n• Hear from local\, regional\, and international experts on strategies for implementing solutions; and\n• Meet in facilitated small-group sessions to connect with the organization and our global network\, subject experts\, and each other.

SUMMARY:Houston Urban Gardener Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month Andrew Cobb will present on his apprenticeship at the Possibility Alliance (PA)\, a electric free and low petroleum permaculture farm in Missouri. At the farm they cooked by wood fire\, made wattle fences from the forest\, raised animals\, and hosted visitors looking to learn about nonviolent living. The PA operated on the gift economy\, so money was rarely used\, but plenty of work was done by the community to meet their own needs and those of their neighbors. \nAndrew will also share about his garden installation work\, which merges techniques from local farms (Sown and Grown and Finca Tres Robles) to create a long term soil building technique that suppresses weeds\, saves on soil costs\, and is a hotbed for worms. \nAndrew Cobb is a Houston native who worked in IT out of school\, but later awakened to the joys of being outside and growing food with others. He is currently cultivating a food forest on a house lot in 3rd Ward\, teaching fermentation classes at Finca Tres Robles\, and installing home gardens.

SUMMARY:Confronting Inequality: Alternative Economies\, Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Rothko Chapel has scheduled a four-day symposium exploring economic inequality and ways communities can improve and sustain local economies. March 31-April 3 \n“Confronting Inequality: Alternative Economies\, Resilient Communities” is slated to start with the keynote at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, March 31. \nTerry Tempest Williams\, author\, conservationist and activist\, will serve as keynote. She is known for speaking out on behalf of taking an ethical stance on life – and frequently discusses the social implications of environmental issues\, which are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. \n“Williams asks her audience to consider a different type of power\, one that could be redistributed equally\,” Rothko Chapel executive director David Leslie said. “She is a fascinating figure\, who has testified before Congress on women’s health issues\, been a guest at the White House and camped in the remote wilderness in Alaska and worked as a barefoot artist in Rwanda.” \nWilliams is currently the Annie Clark Tanner Scholar in Environmental Humanities at the University of Utah.\nThe conversation will continue in greater depth through interactive panel discussions – from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday\, April 1 and from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday\, April 2 and Sunday\, April 3. For a full schedule\, visit rothkochapel.org. \nA variety of noted speakers will delve into the relationship between economic inequality\, spirituality\, gender\, environmental sustainability\, systems of power\, oppression and art. \n“Each panel is diverse\, consisting of spiritual leaders\, academics\, activists\, and artists — in order to make sure the conversation is grounded in both theory and real-world applications\,” public programs director Michelle Ashton said. \nDavid Leslie added that the symposium is particularly timely. \n“With the nation experiencing the impact of economic inequality and the erosion of the middle class\, alternative economic and community development models have gained even greater attention\, particularly urban cooperative economies in cities like Houston and Detroit\, as well as cooperatives and rural communities throughout the country\,” he said. “This symposium presents an opportunity to bring together a broad range of thinkers to focus on creative\, effective responses to eliminating economic inequality.” \nLeslie explained that inequality is not only an economic and political problem – but also raises moral questions about interconnectedness in society. \n“In response to these questions\, innovative alternative economies are emerging locally\, nationally and globally that have the potential to create a more equitable\, socialy responsible and environmentally sustainable world\,” he said. “This symposium will offer an in-depth exploration of these ideas.” \nEach panel will be preceded by interactive experiences for the audience\, including meditation and poetry reading. Receptions will be held following the discussions.
