SUMMARY:Eight Crucial Years for Our Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Most people don’t realize quite how pivotal the next eight years are for the future of our climate\, our planet\, and our civilization. Join Phoebe Barnard\, lead author of the global climate action blueprint\, “World Scientists’ Warnings Into Action: Local to Global\,” with 15 top global scientists\, economists and governance specialists\, as she outlines the actions that humanity needs to take to avert our complex planetary crises by 2026\, 2030 and 2050 at six scales\, from the household and community levels to cities\, states\, nations and the UN.  What are the most important things which we can\, and must\, all do as individuals\, as communities\, in cities? These include concrete actions for energy conservation and decarbonization; for reduction of atmospheric pollutants; for nature conservation and restoration; for food systems reform\, dietary change and soil conservation; for smaller families and stabilizing and slowly reducing population; and for reform of our consumerist economy.  A summary of the paper is given in an article in The Conversation\, and the paper is open for cosignature by anyone with a degree in any kind of science at Scientists’ Warning Europe. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/eight-crucial-years-for-our-civilization-tickets-261427736397. SUMMARY:Earth Church
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Blackburn\, Professor in the Practice in Environmental Law at Rice University\, who will discuss his new book\, Earth Church\, which he co-authored with artist Isabelle Scurry Chapman. Earth Church is a book about Earth-based spirituality\, a subject that will become much more prominent in a future defined by a changing climate and the creation of a new economic system that is circular rather than linear. At the center of Earth-based spirituality is the Earth itself\, that wonderful planet without which we would not be.  Blackburn will weave a narrative around the poetry and art of Earth-based spirituality. Time for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/earth-church-tickets-235539965377. SUMMARY:The Grammar of Creation: What is Nature Speaking to Us? (And Are We Listening?)
DESCRIPTION:Join Sr. Damien Marie Savino\, Dean of Science & Sustainability at Aquinas College and a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist with a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering\, as she reflects on the ancient notion of the “grammar of creation” in light of contemporary ecological challenges. In many ways today\, creation is “groaning\, waiting to be made known” (Romans 8)\, waiting for humans to hear its cry. Sister Damien Marie will share her “reading” of some key messages from the grammar of creation and how they can help us better understand the nature of Planet Earth\, in order to heal its wounds. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-grammar-of-creation-what-is-nature-speaking-to-us-are-we-listening-tickets-222689599587. SUMMARY:Faithful Resilience: A Study on Climate Resilience for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:Faithful Resilience is a six-part weekly study on climate resilience for faith communities. The climate crisis has arrived. Faith communities must not only react\, but also prepare. Over the last decade\, hurricanes have intensified\, wildfires have burnt stronger\, and heat waves have baked our cities. These events can only be expected to get worse in the next decades. Most of our faith communities are not ready for these climate-driven disasters. Yet\, the communities who will be most threatened by climate change also have an opportunity to play a pivotal role in building resilience in their towns and cities. Whether a faith community has a large facility\, land\, social capital\, or something else\, those assets can be channeled into building climate resilience in preparation for the coming physical and spiritual storms of the climate crisis. Join us for a six-week exploration on Thursday evenings of how your house of worship/faith community can become a force for climate resilience for your community. SUMMARY:All Creation Waits Weekly Book Discussion Group for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Avoid the consumer hype of the “holiday season” with daily readings of intimate\, beautifully-written portraits of wild animals and their adaptations to the cold and dark of winter.  The author sees in these creatures lessons for adapting to the “winters” in our own lives.  The book\, although intended as a devotional for the Christian season of Advent\, is very unusual in that the stories contain no overtly religious content\, making it suitable for people of all faiths\, or no faith at all. So\, Christians\, environmentalists\, animal lovers & others will be captivated and inspired by these stories.  And\, the stories can be read with children & enjoyed by the entire family.  Join a weekly book discussion group on Wednesdays\, online\, to reflect together on All Creation Waits.  Register for the weekly discussion on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/all-creation-waits-book-discussion-group-for-advent-tickets-192586951757. SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving.\nAnd it is a Fair\, with crafts\, games and other activities for families and chldren\, including\, but not limited to Holiday Potpourri\, Stone Art\, Origami\, Milkweed for Monarchs AND Music by Jim Presley: Blues and Native American Music\nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades.\nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to a local charity.\nSchedule: \n12:30 PM – Open for table setup\n1:00 PM – Open to everyone – Games \, Crafts\, all day\n1:30 PM – Children’s Storytime:\n2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Concert-Jim Presley will play Traditional Blues\, Original Blues\, and Native American Music\n3:15 PM – Children’s Story Time: Milkweed & Monarchs\n\nWe will be observing Covid-19 precautions–event takes place outdoors with social distancing \nPlease bring your mask to wear when/if social distancing is not possible.

SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join a weekly online discussion series on Thursday\, beginning Oct. 28\,  built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. The study’s Action Center provides practical\, step-by-step instructions for advocacy activities\, as well as recommended policy asks for local\, state\, and national leaders.  Join us! SUMMARY:Houston’s Transition to a Low Carbon Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bruce Race\, FAIA\, FAICP\, Professor of Architecture at the University of Houston\, as he considers how Houston could transition to a low carbon future.  Texas is the historic global epicenter for the carbon economy. Oil and gas represent over one third of the state economy. Texas’ $1.9 trillion GDP\, if a country\, would make us the 9th largest in the world. We have over 50 Fortune 500 companies\, including ExxonMobil (2nd) and ConocoPhillips (4th). Is Houston the next Detroit\, or can we diversify our way to continued prosperity in a low-carbon economy? Dr. Bruce Race\, FAIA\, FAICP from the University of Houston will share his research on how energy conservation and shift to renewables will reshape Houston’s economy\, development patterns\, and mobility systems. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after his talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \n

SUMMARY:A Resilient Future for All Rests on Prioritizing the Most Vulnerable
DESCRIPTION:Join Kristen Schlemmer\, Legal Director at Bayou City Waterkeeper\, as she considers how disasters\, while affecting large portions of the Houston population\, impact the vulnerable more severely and why building resilience is critical.  Hurricane Harvey and Winter Storm Uri showed us that disasters increasingly affect large portions of our region’s population. While many of us are able to recover from these storms in a matter of weeks\, decades of underinvestment in our water systems and flood protection have left low-income communities especially vulnerable to the long-term effects of a single disaster. As we work toward a resilient future for all\, we must focus on those most affected by historic neglect\, as well as disaster over the long-term. If we emphasize justice for the most vulnerable among us\, we will secure resilience for all.  With science\, law\, and policy\, Bayou City Waterkeeper works with local communities to protect and restore natural systems\, achieve equitable policy solutions\, and systematically advance change to benefit all who live within the Lower Galveston Bay watershed encompassing the greater Houston area. Time will be provided for discussion with the audience after Kristen’s talk.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:100 Climate Solutions for Houses of Worship & Their Members
DESCRIPTION:100 Climate Solutions for Houses of Worship & Their Members \nSunday\, May 9\, 2 p.m.\, online \n  \n“Can we reverse global warming by 2050?” is the question addressed by Project Drawdown.   Project Drawdown’s research into all possible solutions yielded the top 100 most impactful solutions to climate change\, in priority order\, with estimates of cost and benefits.  The results may surprise you. \nHere are a few examples: \n  Changing our food habits should help as much as wind power.  “Eat your veggies and clean your plate.”  If food waste were a country it would be the third largest emitter\, just behind the USA and China.  Animal products require ten to a hundred times more land than vegetables. \n  3 billion folks cook with firewood.  A $30 to $100 factory-made stove cuts fuel usage by 50 – 75%.  1.5 billion people can’t afford the up-front cost of such a stove\, even if it will save them money or time. \n· Humanity is changing refrigerants again.  The current ones are potent greenhouse gases.  This should save 1 degree Fahrenheit of warming. \nNan Hildreth\, climate activist\, will explain how you can support the most impactful responses to climate change\, whether in your personal life\, at your house of worship\, or around the world. \nLearn more/register on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/100-climate-solutions-for-houses-of-worship-their-members-tickets-148445545623. \nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information.

SUMMARY:The Path of Hope
DESCRIPTION:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities\n\nApr. 6 – Apr. 27\, Tuesdays at 6 p.m. \n\nYou are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. \nThe series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action. Join us! \nPlease register on www.eventbrite.com; \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-path-of-hope-a-study-on-climate-action-for-faith-communities-tickets-142304766387 \nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information.
