SUMMARY:The Earth Charter & Lutheran Social Statements
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Brenskelle\, head of the Lutherans Restoring Creation Team for the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)\, for a talk on the Earth Charter.  The ELCA voted to endorse the Earth Charter at its national assembly in August. The Earth Charter\, while a completely secular document\, is an ethical framework for building a just\, sustainable\, and peaceful society. As such\, it’s precepts have much in common with Christian social teaching\, and indeed\, with the social teaching of many faiths. This first half of this talk will cover the Earth Charter\, its origins & principles\, as well as materials available from the Earth Charter Initiative. The second half of the talk will explain the relationship between Earth Charter principles & Christian social teaching\, using the social statements of the ELCA as a basis. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions about this talk.

SUMMARY:US Climate Strikes | September 20\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Climate Strike will be the biggest climate strike in Houston history. As the energy capital world\, Houston is in a position to push the global community toward green energy. This transition will include access to training\, unionized jobs\, and support for those impacted by the switch in industry. We invite you to come stand with us and continue to the fight for a better future! If you are planning on joining us please remember to carpool\, walk\, or take public transportation if you are able to! \nSign up at https://actionnetwork.org/events/houston-climate-strike-2? \nJOIN THE CLIMATE STRIKE\nBeing a young person in 2019 means living every day in fear and dread as we see the foundations of civilization crumbling around us. \nIt means trying not to imagine what the world will look like in 30 years\, or even 10 years. \nScientists tell us we have just 11 years to transform our economy before it’s too late to protect human civilization as we know it. To achieve the scale of transformation science demands\, we need elected officials at every level of government to treat the climate crisis like the emergency it is and make the Green New Deal their top priority. But right now\, the leaders supposed to tackle this crisis are either asleep at the wheel or purposely driving us toward catastrophe so their oil and gas billionaire friends can keep raking in profits. \nDespite calls for a climate debate in the forms of 540\,000 petition signatures\, all major presidential candidates\, and over 100 DNC members\, the DNC voted on the weekend of August 24th to deny the resolution for a climate debate. Our future is at stake\, but Tom Perez just swept aside the climate crisis for someone else to solve. \nThat isn’t leadership. Once again\, we will have to take the lead. We will start by striking together. Will you join us?

SUMMARY:Climate Caucus
DESCRIPTION:The students of St. Catherine’s Montessori are hosting a climate caucus to discuss climate change and clean energy solutions in advance of Houston’s upcoming Democratic presidential primary debate. This student-led\, nonpartisan event serves as a way for our students to move from knowing to acting\, and builds on the work from their spring 2019 climate change symposium. \nStudents will integrate their work in environmental studies and government studies and demonstrate their presentation skills by moderating and serving on a panel that will also feature students from other Houston-area high schools and universities. Panelists will discuss key issues and potential solutions to climate change. \nThe caucus will be livestreamed and shared via Facebook and Twitter to reach the presidential candidates and their campaign staff to showcase the concerns of a diverse and knowledgeable group of students who gathered together to engage respectfully with one another on the topics of climate change\, energy\, and legislation. \nThe nonpartisan event is free and open to the public. RSVP by September 8. \nFor more info go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/climate-caucus-registration-70817977477

SUMMARY:Climate Movie Evening: Paris to Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Live Oak Friends Meeting (Quaker Meeting House) in the Heights for a movie evening.  There will be a pot-luck dinner for those who are interested at 6 pm on Saturday August 24th.  The movie\, Paris to Pittsburgh will start at 7pm.  Families welcome.  Admission is free; just bring your pot luck item to share dinner and conversation.\n\nParis to Pittsburgh brings to life the impassioned efforts of individuals who are battling the most severe threats of climate change in their own backyards. The film is directed by Sidney Beaumont and Mike Bonfiglio\, produced by Bloomberg Philanthropies and RadicalMedia and distributed by National Geographic Documentary Films.\n\nMore info on the film at: https://www.paristopittsburgh.com/\n\nIf you have any questions\, call 832-463-1128.
