SUMMARY:“Toxic Tour” of Houston
DESCRIPTION:Rothko Chapel Presents\, Offsite Program: “Toxic Tour” of Houston with t.e.j.a.s.\n9:15am – Meet at 1409 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) for light breakfast and to board the bus\n10am-2pm – Tour (bring your own lunch)\nTicketed event\, $20 fee to offset transportation costs. Space is limited. \nJuan Parras and Yvette Arellano of Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) will lead a tour addressing toxic sites in and around the greater Houston community. \nPlease meet at 1409 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) at 9:15am for light breakfast and to board the bus. The bus is equipped with restrooms and wifi. Bring your lunch with you to eat on the bus\, as the tour will continue through lunchtime. Please wear comfortable apparel and closed toed shoes for walking and muddy terrain\, as we will stop and explore some areas on foot.  \nt.e.j.a.s. originated the toxic tour over 20 years ago in Houston as an educational tool for individuals within and outside of the community to gain a further understanding of environmental justice issues. Pictures cannot easily convey the surreal site of this massive industrial complex\, nor the thick polluted air. Join us on a tour through the East End of Houston\, where some of the largest refineries and chemical plants surround neighborhoods and spew toxins into the air. Thousands of people live\, work\, and attend schools in the shadow of these facilities. \nThis program precedes the Rothko Chapel 2019 Symposium “Toward a Better Future: Transforming the Climate Crisis” taking place February 28 through March 2 in partnership with the University of St. Thomas. To learn more about topics and presenters included in the symposium\, click here. \nAbout t.e.j.a.s.:\nTexas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) is dedicated to providing community members with the tools necessary to create sustainable\, environmentally healthy communities by educating individuals on health concerns and implications arising from environmental pollution\, empowering individuals with an understanding of applicable environmental laws and regulations and promoting their enforcement\, and offering community building skills and resources for effective community action and greater public participation. Our goal is to promote environmental protection through education\, policy development\, community awareness\, and legal action. Our guiding principle is that everyone\, regardless of race or income\, is entitled to live in a clean environment. \nFor more information and to register\, visit http://rothkochapel.org/experience/events/register/1577

SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center.

SUMMARY:China’s National Sword Policy & It’s Impacts on Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. In September\, we welcome Jordan Fengel\, Executive Director of STAR (State of Texas Alliance for Recycling).  For nearly 50 years\, recycling has been a staple practice throughout many American communities. A recent policy change by the Chinese government in 2017\, enacted in 2018\, banning many recyclable materials from being imported\, has created a conundrum in the recycling industry. The US has relied on China to process our mixed plastic and mixed paper recyclables for the last 20+ years. With China set to eliminate all imports of recyclable materials by 2020\, Jordan will discuss what STAR is doing to turn the tide. He will explain how STAR sees this crisis more as a fantastic opportunity to build American processing and manufacturing markets that have been long needed. These markets will manage and create the products we use on a daily basis locally and regionally\, creating Texas jobs and providing economic growth.   Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com\, and you will receive an invitation to the web meeting.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Scripture & Science: What’s the Connection?
DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to attend an Adult Forum that addresses scripture and science.  Lisa Brenskelle & Elmer Ledesma\, leaders of the Creation Care Team at Christ the King\, will consider:  Is there conflict or connection between scripture & science?  If there is connection\, what connection exists?  If a connection exists\, then scientific understanding matters for people of faith –  but\, how can they distinguish good science from “fake news”?  Join us for this insightful Adult Forum!

SUMMARY:No Nuclear Waste in Our Community!
DESCRIPTION:PROTECT TEXAS FROM RADIOACTIVE WASTE TOUR – PLEASE JOIN US! \nTexas is at risk. Communities across the state are coming together\, concerned about an issue that will affect our communities\, our future generations\, and the wonderful state we call home. We are concerned about high-level nuclear reactor waste that could come through our communities and be dumped on Texas for decades to come. \nDeadly radioactive waste could come through our cities and rural lands\, headed to two proposed sites. The Consolidated Interim Storage project of Waste Control Specialists (WCS) and ORANO seeks to store 40\,000 tons of high-level radioactive waste in Andrews\, Texas. Holtec proposes a similar high-level radioactive waste storage project for 173\,000 tons of spent fuel just a short distance from Texas\, across the New Mexico border. \nEach rail car would carry as much plutonium as was in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The capacity of these sites would allow for more than all nuclear the nuclear reactor waste that has been produced in the entire country\, plus all that will likely be produced in the future and it would require over 20 years to get it all here. \nImporting high-level radioactive waste to either site\, waste that will remain dangerous for millennia\, puts our children and future generations at risk from transport accidents and potential contamination. If these projects go forward\, Houstonians are at risk for exposure to radioactive nuclear waste. \nThe public comment period ends October 19th. Learn more and discuss options for action at a community meeting\, Monday\, September 24th at 7 pm at True Love Missionary Baptist Church\, 4029 Falls Street\, Houston TX 77026. \nWe won’t allow our community to be contaminated with this waste – will you join us? Everyone is invited. Light refreshments will be available.
