SUMMARY:Homemade Kombucha Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration: http://sippingsister.brownpapertickets.com/ \nWant to learn to make homemade Kombucha? It’s a fermented tea full of probiotics (healthy gut!)\, nonalcoholic (usually around .5%)\, and simple to make. Kombucha acts as an adaptogen\, which helps the body maintain homeostasis.  The main ingredients are simple; water\,  a SCOBY\, tea and something sweet. \nSave money!  Already drink lots of kombucha?  You probably pay $5 for 16oz.  In class\, we will brew 1 gallon batches of kombucha\, which is 128oz ($40 for store kombucha).  That’s 8 bottles of kombucha for a per batch cost of under $2!  All you need is organic sugar ($0.40) and organic tea ($0.90)! \nIt’s healthy!  Homemade kombucha is never flash pasteurized\, as it doesn’t need to be shelf stable.  This means that local beneficial bacteria and yeasts can thrive and at resilience and diversity to your gut. \nIn this class we will… \n– Tour Japhet Creek Park\,\n– Learn about wild yeasts/bacteria and fermentation\n– Brew kombucha (hands on)**\n– Flavor kombucha in a second ferment (hands on)***\n– Take home a SCOBY mother to start your own \n**If you purchase a kombucha starter kit\, we will brew your first batch together\, and you can take your mother home. \nCome enjoy the “unintentional” nature community of Japhet Creek and practice the ancient art of fermentation. DESCRIPTION:International Workers Day/A Day Without Immigrants\nAn International Workers Day/A Day Without Immigrants Rally will be held on May 1\, 2017\, 5:30-8:00 pm\, at Guadalupe Plaza\, 2311 Runnels Street\, in Houston. This event will highlight the historic achievements and contemporary struggles of workers of all nationalities\, as well as the imperative need for solidarity with our immigrant sisters and brothers\, who are increasingly under attack. Working class\, this is your cause! Join us!\nThe Rally will include speakers from sponsoring organizations\, poets/spoken word artists\, musicians\, banners and signs\, chants\, and much more. This event is being organized by and for workers\, whose labor makes life\, society\, and aspirations for a better future possible. SUMMARY:On Coal River Film Screening and Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 3rd\, 7PM @ Rice Cinema\n\n\n\n\nThe Ethnographic Film Society is proud to present a public screening of “On Coal River”\, a documentary about environmental justice in coal country Appalachia. The screening is free and open to the public. A 5$ donations at the door to support Coal River Mountain Watch\, one of the activist organization prominently featured in the film\, are greatly appreciated.\n\nFor more information see our Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/118627328680500/\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoal River Valley\, West Virginia is a community surrounded by lush mountains and a looming toxic threat. ON COAL RIVER follows a former miner and his neighbors in a David-and-Goliath struggle for the future of their valley\, their children\, and life as they know it.\n\nEd Wiley once worked at the same coal waste facility that now threatens his granddaughter’s elementary school. When his local government refuses to act\, Ed embarks on a quest to have the school relocated to safer ground.  With insider knowledge and a sharp sense of right and wrong\, Ed confronts his local school board\, the state government\, and a notorious coal company — Massey Energy — for putting his granddaughter and his community at risk.\n\nAlong the way\, Ed is supported by his neighbors Bo and Judy\, who have their own problems with the coal company.  Ex-marine Bo Webb retired to his childhood home only to discover that this once-idyllic valley is being transformed by the practice of “mountaintop removal” – blowing up mountains to extract coal.  Bo’s neighbor Judy Bonds was forced to leave her ancestral home when the same company opened a mine next door – sending dangerous black water down the creek where her grandson played.  Together\, Bo and Judy help Ed bring attention to the dangers at Marsh Fork Elementary\, hoping that if they save the school\, they can save the valley.\n\nAcross the river\, Maria Lambert recognizes a pattern in the unusual health problems plaguing her community.  Following intuition\, and what she describes as a mission from above\, Maria gathers evidence suggesting that nearby coal companies have contaminated her neighborhood’s water supply.\n\nShot over a five-year period\, ON COAL RIVER follows the transformation of these four remarkable individuals as they fight for the valley they love — and for future generations.
