DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). DESCRIPTION:Veiga Grétarsdóttir is the first person in the world to attempt to kayak more than 1\,200 miles around Iceland\, counterclockwise and “against the current.” Veiga’s personal journey \nis no less remarkable: she was born as a boy 44 years ago in an Icelandic fishing village. Veigar had a wife and family but decided at the age of 38 to undergo gender reassignment. The inner struggle was a journey as difficult\, if not more so\, than the solo expedition she undertakes. These two stories of conflict and struggle are intertwined as the film documents her 103-day journey around Iceland\, with the magical coastline of the country a backdrop to the story of Veiga’s transition.

DESCRIPTION:In March 1972\, an estimated 10\,000 Black politicians\, activists\, artists\, and performers congregated at the National Black Political Convention in Gary\, Indiana. Attendees included Amiri Baraka\, Dick Gregory\,\nIsaac Hayes\, Rev. Jesse Jackson\, Coretta Scott King\, and Bobby Seale. William Greaves (1926–2014)\, the established documentarian of Black history\, culture and politics\, directed a camera crew and captured it all. Narrated by Sidney Poitier with poetry recited by Harry Belafonte\, the film was thought at the time to be too radical for television broadcast and was drastically edited. Now restored to its original length\, this essential documentary reveals a rousing\, at times contentious\, yet undeniably significant historical event.

The fight to form industrial unions in the first half of the 20th century through is covered in the stories of three women who leave rural farms for job opportunities in Chicago. The women recount their experiences of working 14 hours a day in factories where management had all the power while workers—especially women and minorities—had none. \nDigital preservation and the restored 16mm prints made possible by The Women’s Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film & Television.

SUMMARY:“Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North"
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Black History Month with a screening of the film “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North\,” on February 11\, 2020 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston 77054.  The documentary follows filmmaker Katrina Browne as she discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. SUMMARY:Film showing - Abby Martin's Gaza Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The documentary was made during\, and depicts\, the Great March of Return protests\, whose images Palestinians of slain medics\, journalists\, women\, children\, and disabled people resounded throughout the world in 2018. The Trump administration’s deepened support for the most extreme Israeli positions is also displayed in the film\, with clips of Trump’s moving of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and preparation for the “Deal of the Century.” \nThe government of Israel tightly restricts the presence of journalists in the Gaza. In order to work around these restrictions\, The Empire Files team collaborated with Palestinian videographers from Gaza. \nGaza is  the 25-mile long\, seven-mile wide strip of occupied and blockaded land that the World Health Organization has said will be unfit for human occupation by 2020. The description of Gaza as an “open-air prison” is commonly used these days\, but Gaza Fights for Freedom gives a visceral and painful view of this descriptor. Narrated by Martin\, the camera winds us through the streets of Gaza\, through the rubble of past Israeli aerial assaults–2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and intermittent years.  The attack in 2014 alone destroyed nearly 20\,000 homes. Gaza is unable to recover from this destruction\, rebuild or remove the debris due to the blockade. The film takes us through densely populated cities\, where families have no choice but to drink water unsafe for consumption. \nThe height of the Great March Of Return protests\, it features exclusive footage of demonstrations where 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by Israeli snipers since March 30\, 2018.

Through interviews with his friends\, the documentary tells the story of “Mark\,” who converted to Islam before college and became radicalized shortly thereafter.
