SUMMARY:Opening Night Screening and Reception for Anand Patwardhan: Ways of Struggle
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston’s Glassell School of Art\, Anand Patwardhan: Ways of Struggle\, surveys four decades of filmmaking by one of today’s most socially committed documentary filmmakers. Since the 1970s\, Patwardhan has been making portraits of Indian movements for social justice. Starting in the 1990s\, Patwardhan began also chronicling the rise of right-wing Hindu nationalism\, whose driving passions have now acquired global relevance\, from Bolsonaro’s Brazil to Trump’s America. Taken together\, Patwardhan’s films make up a passionate plea for peace and social justice. The exhibition opens with a screening of Patwardhan’s film on the Hindu nationalist destruction of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya\, India\, In the Name of God (1992). The screening will take place at the Glassell School’s Favrot Auditorium; the film will be introduced by Patwardhan\, and will be followed afterward by a reception with the filmmaker.

Zahra will be sourcing food from the Farmers of Plant It Forward\, which supports hard working refugee farmers\, the local economy\, and the creation of green space in Houston. Traditional music will be performed by Kurdish/Syrian refugee Mohamed Horo.  Included in the reception will be a short presentation of “When We Were Strangers” by Kimberly Meyer. Following the reception and presentation will be a screening of the film Soufra. \nThis event will share stories of refugees in the Houston community as well as those across borders in hopes of creating an experience where all walk away feeling a deeper sense of connection\, compassion\, and responsibility.

DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.   Eva Lewis and other town members will be here to discuss the film. \n  \nThe Problem\n\nThe Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects Americans from random and arbitrary stops and searches.\nAccording to the government\, however\, these basic constitutional principles do not apply fully at our borders. The film at this event will be to commemorate the anniversary of the Massacre at Wounded Knee December 29th\, 1890 on the Pine Ridge reservation of the Lakota Sioux in South Dakota.\n\n\nFidel Moreno\, 28 year award winning ethno-graphic documentary filmmaker and border justice activist\, was the co-director and associate producer for this documentary\, produced in 1991 and will be present to lead the discussion and also share his experiences for the last 6 months in Phoenix\, Aho and Tucson\, AZ  in regards to undocumented immigrants\, human rights and border justice issues to raise public awareness\, encourage civic engagement and to raise some funds for travel to return to Tucson\, Ajo\, and Phoenix\, AZ as well as El Paso\, TX. \n\n\n\nFidel will be visiting detention camps and safe houses for undocumented immigrants crossing the U.S. & Mexico Border and delivering collected supplies of water\, food and children’s clothing. \nThere will be art for sale that has been donated by artists\, William Song\, John Benson and Ryan White to support his sacred activism and possible documentary on Border Issues and Justice related to undocumented immigrants and their families and children.

DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the European Union\, the German Consulate General Houston\, and TCADP\, you are cordially invited to attend a special screening of the documentary film\, “True Conviction\,” followed by a panel discussion featuring Dallas County exonerees\, Christopher Scott and Steven Phillips. \n  \nThis event will take place at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) on Thursday\, November 15\, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium (A350) (One Main Street\, Houston\, TX 77002).* \nFree and open to the public.  RSVP here. \n  \nAbout the film \nFilmed in Dallas\, “True Conviction” explores the investigative and philanthropic work of the unlikeliest of teams: exonerees Christopher Scott\, Johnnie Lindsey\, and Steven Phillips\, who collectively spent more than sixty years in prison for crimes they did not commit. After their exonerations\, the three friends formed House of Renewed Hope to help other wrongfully convicted individuals and advocate for criminal justice reforms. \n  \n“True Conviction” premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and has screened throughout the country. The film follows the detectives as they investigate two cases\, including a 35-year-old capital murder conviction in Harris County.  This is the first public screening event in Houston. \n  \n*The Auditorium is located on the 3rd floor (Main Street Level) of the Academic Building at UHD.   The Visitor Parking Garage is located at 201 Girard Street. \n  \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Arguably\, James Blue’s most ambitious project\, this complex documentary was originally made in five one-hour episodes as an interactive public television series. The sixth episode\, which summarized the series\, will be screened. Blue and renowned architect Adele Santos take us on a tour of 1970s Houston\, a divided city\, growing in the midst of an oil boom. Skyscrapers going up\, unemployment going down. One thousand new residents were arriving per week. But the filmmakers see two cities. Visible Houston is populated by well-educated citizens earning high wages with no state or income taxes. Invisible Houston\, for whom the most basic city services did not exist\, was inhabited by poorly educated citizens earning low wages. Blue was founder of Rice University Media Center and a leader in the movement to democratize media access and production across America\, including Houston’s Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP)\, a media arts organization founded in 1977.\n\nAdele Naude Santos will be in attendance
