DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month on Wednesday\, May 18\, 2022 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM with a screening of “The Chinese Exclusion Act” at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004. The film will be followed by a facilitated dialogue. \nOn May 6\,1882 — on the eve of the greatest wave of immigration in U.S. history — President Chester A. Arthur signed into law a unique piece of federal legislation. Called the Chinese Exclusion Act\, it singled out\, as never before\, a specific race and nationality for exclusion\, making it illegal for Chinese workers to come to America\, and for Chinese nationals already here to ever become citizens of the United States. A deeply American story about immigration and national identity\, civil rights and human justice; about how we define who can be an American\, and what being an American means\, the film examines the economic\, cultural\, social\, legal\, racial and political dimensions of the law; the forces and events that gave rise to it; and the effects it had\, and continues to have\, on American culture and identify. \nThe event will be held IN-PERSON.  Free parking is available at Houston Community College lot #9 (Crawford & Holman).This event is free and open to the public with donations encouraged.  To reserve your seat\, please register at: https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/asian-american-pacific-islander-heritage-month-film-screening-in-person/\n\nPlease Note: This event will not be offered virtually or recorded. Registration is REQUIRED and you must bring your registration confirmation to the event.
