SUMMARY:Weelaunee Worldwide: Block Cop City Speaking Tour
DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation to join a powerful collective action. \nAfter more than two years of struggle to defend the Weelaunee forest in southeast Atlanta from the construction of a militarized police training facility\, the movement is at a crucial crossroads. This November\, there is a call for a mass action to halt construction on the site. We know the city won’t listen to the overwhelming desire of the people\, and the risks of inaction are far too great. With our future on the line and the whole world watching\, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. \nThis presentation will cover the history of the movement so far\, how we’ve arrived at the current conjuncture\, and help us get ready to join each other in November. Together we can Block Cop City. \nMore info at blockcopcity.org

SUMMARY:Interfaith Justice Advocacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 is the perfect time to refresh your advocacy knowledge and set goals for engaging your faith community around issues that impact the planet and its peoples. Why is it such a perfect time? The Texas legislative session just ended\, and in September all eyes will turn toward the 2024 elections. Faith communities typically don’t want to be seen as “political\,” but\, as we’ll cover in this workshop\, faith communities can—and should—provide important education and leadership roles in nonpartisan civic engagement. Join Bee Moorhead\, executive director of Texas Impact\, an interfaith justice advocacy organization\, and her colleagues\, to talk about what that looks like “in real life\,” and do a deep dive into Texas Impact’s specific Houston-area resources and projects.  Register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/interfaith-justice-advocacy-workshop-tickets-627649485507. SUMMARY:Without the Development of All Nations\, there Can Be No Lasting Peace for the Planet
DESCRIPTION:A little more after the war in Ukraine\, which in reality had started in 2014\, escalated with the Russian military operation\, it has become very clear that the real issue is not Ukraine.  It is a proxy war between the U.S. Great Britain and NATO\, on the one side\, and Russia on the other — with a conflict with China also looming.  The real issue is that the nations of the Global South are trying to shed the colonial order\, this time for good\, and they have now become the Global Majority.  Driving the war danger is the systemic breakdown of the trans-Atlantic financial system\, with its over $2 quadrillion in unpayable financial assets.  The world urgently needs a new security and development architecture.  This two-day event will bring together leaders from some two dozen nations to discuss how to bring that about.

SUMMARY:The Age of Reason or the Annihilation of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:We are in an epochal change.  The countries of the Global South are now demanding their innate right for development. \nThe old order\, which neither follows rules\, nor is in  order\, is trying to prevent a change in the status quo\, which protects the rights of the billionaires\, but neglects the billions of people who suffer from scarcity. \nThere is now an attempt to establish Global NATO through an interconnected network of military treaties\, the NATO- EU agreement\, the AUKUS (Australia-United Kingdom-United States partnership)\, the UK-Japan “Reciprocal Access Agreement\,” which look more and more like a march towards a global showdown with Russia and China\, whose rise is seen as an existential threat. \nIt should be clear to any sane person: global war will be nuclear and that will be the end of civilization. So\, it is completely insane to plan for it. And to deny the countries of the Global South access to cooperation with the BRI (Belt and Road Initiative)\, which is\, for the first time\, giving hope to the developing sector to overcome poverty and underdevelopment\, is outright evil. \nIt is therefore more urgent than ever to find forces for peace in all countries of the world\, who understand that we need to move to a new paradigm in international relations.    What will this new paradigm look like.  How can we cooperate across national and cultural divisions to bring it about.  This live forum will feature speakers from Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, Central and South America\, and the USA.  A roster of speakers will soon be posted on SchillerInstitute.com.

SUMMARY:Stop the Danger of Nuclear War Now
DESCRIPTION:The long-awaited U.S. midterm election did not reduce the danger of global nuclear war – if anything\, it increased that threat. The life-and-death issues facing the United States and the world – the escalating danger of nuclear confrontation around the Ukraine theater\, and the breakdown collapse of the Western financial and economic system that is driving that war danger – were scarcely even mentioned.   Just how close we are to the edge of nuclear war was made dramatically clear on Nov. 15-16\, when a rocket landed on Polish territory. Based on a rumor that Russia had fired the rocket\, which turned out to be false\, the world was within minutes of the activation of the equivalent of Article 5 of NATO.  This event\, on the 59th anniversary of the JFK assassination\, is sponsored by the Schiller Institute\,  Participants will discuss a way forward\, beyond  NATO’s war against Russia in Ukraine\, with a ‘Peace Through Development’ approach for the world.  Event will be be aired online on Schiller Institute.com and simulcast from the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico City.  Speakers include past and current legislators from Mexico\, Peru\, Brazil\, Colombia and Argentina.  Also speaking will be Colonel Richard Black\, former Guyana President Donald Ramotar\, former U.S. Senator candidate (NY) Diane Sare\, and Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp-LaRouche.

SUMMARY:Film showing - Abby Martin's Gaza Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The documentary was made during\, and depicts\, the Great March of Return protests\, whose images Palestinians of slain medics\, journalists\, women\, children\, and disabled people resounded throughout the world in 2018. The Trump administration’s deepened support for the most extreme Israeli positions is also displayed in the film\, with clips of Trump’s moving of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and preparation for the “Deal of the Century.” \nThe government of Israel tightly restricts the presence of journalists in the Gaza. In order to work around these restrictions\, The Empire Files team collaborated with Palestinian videographers from Gaza. \nGaza is  the 25-mile long\, seven-mile wide strip of occupied and blockaded land that the World Health Organization has said will be unfit for human occupation by 2020. The description of Gaza as an “open-air prison” is commonly used these days\, but Gaza Fights for Freedom gives a visceral and painful view of this descriptor. Narrated by Martin\, the camera winds us through the streets of Gaza\, through the rubble of past Israeli aerial assaults–2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and intermittent years.  The attack in 2014 alone destroyed nearly 20\,000 homes. Gaza is unable to recover from this destruction\, rebuild or remove the debris due to the blockade. The film takes us through densely populated cities\, where families have no choice but to drink water unsafe for consumption. \nThe height of the Great March Of Return protests\, it features exclusive footage of demonstrations where 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by Israeli snipers since March 30\, 2018.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Muslim-Jewish Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:*** Registration Required at http://www.minaretfoundation.com/events/muslim-jewish-roundtable/ *** \nThis is our 10th year of coordinating a Muslim Jewish Christmas\, an event where members of the Muslim community and members of the Jewish community get together. This year\, there will be two simultaneous Muslim-Jewish Christmas Events in Houston with several more Muslim and Jewish organizations participating. \nNorthside – Cypress Islamic Center\, 16103 Cypress Rosehill Rd.\nCentral – HCRJ\, 801 Bering Dr.\nDate – Tuesday\, December 24th\nTime – 2:00p – 4:00p \nThe theme for this year is “Standing Up for One Another.” As division and hatred become more common in our communities\, honest conversation is something that we must do. As both of our communities are at the receiving end of hate\, it’s important for us to come together to better understand one another. \nThe goal of this event has always been very simple – to come together on a day when we don’t have any other commitments and talk about our similarities and differences surrounding a specific theme. \nYou don’t need to be a scholar to talk about yourself and your views. You just need to be able to voice your opinions with honesty and compassion and have the ability to listen to another side. \nWill there be food? Yes! It’s a potluck. Please bring a small appetizer you can share\, preferably something you can share a story over. \nKIDS? Bring them! We’ll have activities for children and teens. \nIf you have any questions\, please email Sumaiyah Khan\, our Outreach Coordinator\, at sumaiyah@minaretfoundation.com \nThis years event is done in partnership with:\nBrand Lane Islamic Center\nCongregation Beth Israel\nCongregation Beth Yeshurun\nCongregation Emanu El\nCongregation Jewish Community North\nCypress Islamic Center\nIslamic Center of Klein\nJewish Federation’s Young Adult Division\nMaryam Islamic Center\nMasjid at-Taqwa\nMasjid WD Mohammed\nRiver Oaks Islamic Center\nWoodlands Islamic Center

SUMMARY:The Jerusalem Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Jerusalem Conference is a one-day conference on Thursday\, October 11 that brings together scholars\, ecumenical theologians\, and peace-doers around the topic of:\nJerusalem: What makes for Peace? \n\n\n\nThe recent move of the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has changed the conversation. Historic commitments to Jerusalem as a city for two people of three faiths are being threatened\, along with the hope for peace. While the importance of the city for Jews is not questioned\, its significance for Christians and Muslims\, and particularly Christians is overlooked. For people of faith and for those concerned with peace in the Middle East\, an inclusive Jerusalem is a must. So\, what do we need to understand about the current political realities in Jerusalem\, the implications of theological frameworks of the city\, and current US and foreign policy? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinally\, what steps can we\, as faith leaders take together and in our own networks to advance peace in this region? \nIn addition to responding to this urgent moment\, The Jerusalem Conference is\, in part\, a follow up from the 2016 Atlanta Summit at the Carter Center hosted by President Carter\, which brought together key representatives from 26 denominations as well as numerous faith-based organizations working towards a just peace in Israel/Palestine. This one day conference offers a timely exploration of Jerusalem as key to peace in the Middle East. Together\, we will identify concrete steps and goals towards advancing the vision of an inclusive\, diverse\, and equitable Jerusalem

SUMMARY:Get to Know the System that Oppresses Us - Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:There is much current attention to social and economic inequality. The Occupy movement did much to highlight the inequality and framed the issues as the 1% versus the 99%. Unfortunately\, the root cause of inequality is kept a deep secret – theft of surplus value created by workers. \nKarl Marx\, considered by current information scientists as the most influential scholar in history\, identified the source of wealth as stolen surplus value. His monumental work is entitled “Capital”. Join us as we go over the Marxist critique of Capitalism. Inequality\, wars\, racism and other social ills will no longer be a mystery. \nIt is not enough to be upset by social and economic inequality. We must understand it and struggle for socialism! This event is open to members and non-members alike. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Demonstration against George W. Bush
DESCRIPTION:George W. Bush will be honored at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award Dinner at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel\, 1600 Lamar St.\, on Thursday\, May 24. Bush should be imprisoned for life for war crimes and crimes against humanity–not honored for moral courage.\n\n\nAs Governor of Texas\, Bush approved more than 150 executions. As President\, his invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 led to the deaths of over 250\,000 people. His invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to the deaths of more than one million people. And U.S. troops remain in both countries today. \nThe Bush administration tortured and abused prisoners in these countries\, in Guantanomo Bay\, and in secret sites around the world. Bush promoted passage of the PATRIOT Act\, which increased unconstitutional surveillance and reduced civil liberties. Bush’s neglect during Hurricane Katrina contributed to the suffering and deaths of hundreds of poor people\, predominantly African Americans\, in New Orleans. As one commentator has remarked\, “The blood on Bush’s hands will never dry.” \nA protest against Bush and will be held outside the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel\, 1600 Lamar St.\, on Thursday\, May 24\, from 5 pm until 9 pm. Please join us in condemning Bush’s actions as president and any efforts to whitewash these actions. This action is being organized by Houston Socialist Movement\, Party for Socialism and Liberation\, Workers World Party\, Young Communist League\, and other organizations (list in formation). For more information\, call 832.692.2306. \n\n
