SUMMARY:Super Bowl Weekend #NoBanNoWall Protest
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, February 3rd\, at 4PM as we make sure our voices are heard in the fight against Islamophobia\, xenophobia and all other bigotry that has recently been not only emboldened but acted upon. \nAll eyes are on Houston this weekend for the big game. SUMMARY:Medea Benjamin & Ann Wright on U.S. Foreign Policy in Trump Administration: What will it be and how will it affect you?
DESCRIPTION:As part of a “Texas Tour\,” Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright will speak in Houston.  Medea will draw upon her first-hand knowledge of the Middle East to share her insights\, and she’ll introduce her latest book\, Kingdom of the Unjust; Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection.  Ann was recently – once again – captured in international waters and imprisoned by the Israelis while attempting to reach shore on the Women’s Boat to Gaza.  She has also traveled to Japan\, Korea\, Russia\, Germany\, Greece\, and elsewhere this year and can speak on the human and environmental costs of war and militarism around the globe and the possible effects of a Trump administration’s policies on all of us. \nMedea Benjamin is the co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange.  She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 40 years.  Described as “one of America’s most committed — and most effective — fighters for human rights” by New York Newsday\, and “one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement” by the Los Angeles Times\, she was one of 1\,000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the millions of women who do the essential work of peace worldwide.  She is the author of nine books\, including Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control and Kingdom of the Unjust:  Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection\, and her articles appear regularly in outlets such as The Huffington Post\, Common Dreams\, Alternet\, The Other Words\, and TeleSUR. \nAnn Wright is a 29-year US Army/Army Reserves veteran\, a retired United States Army colonel and retired U.S. State Department official\, known for her outspoken opposition to the Iraq War. She received the State Department Award for Heroism in 1997\, after helping to evacuate several thousand people during the civil war in Sierra Leone. She is most noted for having been one of three State Department officials to publicly resign in direct protest of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. Wright was also a passenger on the Challenger 1\, which along with the Mavi Marmara\, was part of the Gaza flotilla. She served in Nicaragua\, Grenada\, Somalia\, Uzbekistan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Sierra Leone\, Micronesia and Mongolia. In December\, 2001 she was on the small team that reopened the US Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan. She is the co-author of the book “Dissent: Voices of Conscience.” She has written frequently on rape in the military. \nA reception and book signing of Medea Benjamin’s book at 6:30 PM will be followed by their presentations at 7 PM\, followed by Q & A and book signing. \nPhoto credit: AP Photo – Charles Dharapak \n

SUMMARY:Kashmir cries for justice
DESCRIPTION:According to Amnesty International\, as of June 2015 no member of the Indian security forces has been tried in civil courts for thousands of human rights violations committed against the oppressed people of Kashmir in the past three decades. We appeal to the people of conscience to join hands to hold the Government of India accountable for its crimes against humanity.\nOn July 23rd\, we will gather in Houston and speak on behalf of the 12 year old girl who\, last week\, was stripped in front of her family. We will raise our voice on behalf of a brother and sister who were taking their ailing mother to the hospital but on the way\, the Indian forces molested the sister and knocked the brother unconscious while the ailing mother’s pleas were answered by batons. We will cry on behalf of the 14 year old girl who’s dreams to become a doctor were shattered when pallets fired from the gun of an Indian soldier blinded her for the rest of her life and many hundreds like her\, who have partially or permanently lost their eyesight to these lethal pallets. We will shed tears for the innocent lives that have fallen to the bullets of the Indian guns in the last 10 days and tens of thousands in the last three decades. We will speak on behalf of the  parents who are in perpetual and painful grief for their missing children. We will  ask for the identity of the dead in the un-marked mass graves. We will demand justice for the scores of women and minor girls of Kunan and Poshpora villages of Kashmir who were mass and gang raped on a cold night of February 1991 by the Indian Army.\n\nOn July 23rd\, we will raise our voices in solidarity with countless people in and outside of Kashmir and say ‘No’ to injustice and ‘Yes’ to peace. Please stand with us. Together we will protest for Kashmir!! \n!‪#‎Kashmir ‪#‎KashmirSiege ‪#‎KashmirCrisis ‪#‎FreeKashmir ‪#‎kashmirprotests

SUMMARY:Presentation on Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Activism Against the Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta\, a Quaker Jewish activist and writer from Burnaby\, B.C.\, Canada will be in Houston to speak and do a presentation on nonviolence in Palestine.  She will share information about nonviolent activism by Palestinians and Israelis\, separately and together\, in challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land–as this is a much under-publicized aspect of the Palestinian struggle–as well as ways in which “Internationals” can support these efforts. \nShe will also introduce her book: “Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation”.  The book is an interview-based study that presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence\, the vast majority either Palestinian or Israeli\, as they reflect on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations toward the occupation. \nMore info at http://refusingtobeenemiesthebook.wordpress.com \nCopies of Refusing to be Enemies will be available for purchase and signing.

Today Democracy Now! is the largest public media collaboration in the US\, broadcasting on over 1400 public television and radio stations around the world\, with millions accessing it online at democracynow.org. Now Amy\, along with her journalist brother\, David and co-author Denis Moynihan\, share stories of the heroes—the whistleblowers\, the organizers\, the protesters—who have brought about remarkable change. \nThis important book looks back over the past two decades of Democracy Now!and the powerful movements and charismatic leaders who are re-shaping our world. Goodman takes the reader along as she goes to where the silence is\, bringing out voices from the streets of Ferguson\, to Staten Island\, Wall Street\, South Carolina to East Timor—and other places where people are rising up to demand justice. Democracy Now! is the modern day underground railroad of information\, bringing stories from the grassroots to a global audience.
