SUMMARY:Zoom for Victim of Police Abuse
DESCRIPTION:In a shocking case of police brutality\, Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constables broke the neck of Gary Berger\, a 40 year old local resident. While riding his motorcycle home\, Berger was suddenly thrown from his bike. Apparently\, he was rear-ended by a police cruiser who was allegedly pursuing him for a traffic violation.  To raise awareness and support for Gary\, HPJC \, GHCFJ\, and other civil rights organizations is hosting a live Zoom with the Ruiz Law Firm. Unable to work\, Berger has set up a GoFundMe page asking for donations to help him pay medical bills\, attorneys fees and cover basic necessities @ “Justice for Injustice for Gary Berger” (link: https://gofund.me/8bbc4081).

SUMMARY:International Day of Peace 2020
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Peace was first celebrated in 1982\, and is recognized by many nations and organizations with events all over the world every September 21st\, including day-long pauses in wars that reveal how easy it would be to have year-long or forever-long pauses in wars. Here is information on this year’s day of peace from the UN. \nThis year on the International Day of Peace\, Monday\, September 21\, 2020\, World BEYOND War is organizing an online screening of the film “We Are Many.” Get your tickets here. \nWe are also working with chapters\, affiliates\, and allies to organize events of all sorts\, many of them virtual and open to people anywhere. \nFind events or add events here. \nFind resources for creating events here. \nContact us for help here. \nAt all of these events\, including online events\, we hope to see everyone wearing sky blue scarves symbolizing our life beneath one blue sky and our vision of a world beyond war. Get scarves here. \nThe Peace Almanac says of September 21: This is the International Day of Peace. Also on this day in 1943\, the U.S. Senate passed by a vote of 73 to 1 the Fulbright Resolution expressing commitment to a post-war international organization. The resulting United Nations\, along with other international institutions created at the end of World War II\, has of course had a very mixed record in terms of advancing peace. Also on this day in 1963 the War Resisters League organized the first U.S. demonstration against the war on Vietnam. The movement that grew from there eventually played a major role in ending that war and in turning the U.S. public against war to such an extent that war mongers in Washington began to refer to public resistance to war as a disease\, the Vietnam Syndrome. Also on this day in 1976 Orlando Letelier\, a leading opponent of Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet\, was killed\, on Pinochet’s order\, along with his American assistant\, Ronni Moffitt\, by a car bomb in Washington\, D.C. — the work of a former CIA operative. The International Day of Peace was first celebrated in 1982\, and is recognized by many nations and organizations with events all over the world every September 21st\, including day-long pauses in wars that reveal how easy it would be to have year-long or forever-long pauses in wars. On this day\, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters in New York City. This is a good day on which to work for permanent peace and to remember the victims of war.

SUMMARY:MFAH Films Virtual Experience: AI WEIWEI: YOURS TRULY
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, Ai Weiwei\, the renowned Chinese artist and activist\, assisted by curator and filmmaker Cheryl Haines\, transformed the former penitentiaryon Alcatraz Island into an astonishing exhibition of socially engaged art\, focusing on the plight of the unjustly incarcerated. Visitors were invited to send postcards to prisoners in the exhibition. Several of the formerly imprisoned activists\, including Chelsea Manning\, speak about the impact of receiving those messages of hope.

SUMMARY:Close the Camps! Free Them All! April 19 Demonstration at SWK!
DESCRIPTION:Never Again Action-Houston will hold a second COVID-safe\, car-only demonstration to demand the closure of the Southwest Key detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue on Sunday\, April 19\, at 1:30 pm. We will assemble in the parking lot diagonally across from the detention center and place signs on our cars–at a safe distance from each other. Please bring your own signs and tape! Then we will form a caravan and drive around the detention center\, honking and chanting as we go\, for about one hour. \nThis demonstration is co-sponsored by Houston Socialist Movement and Refuse Fascism-Houston. It is part of a state-wide day of action against ICE and private detention centers. Never Again Action groups will also hold car-only protests in San Antonio\, Austin\, Dallas-Ft. Worth\, and Corpus Christi. We can’t let COVID-19 become a death sentence for migrants in detention centers. Together\, we will demand: Close the Camps! Free Them All! If you live in Greater Houston and want to stand up for migrants\, please plan to join us on April 19. For more information\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Film showing - Abby Martin's Gaza Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The documentary was made during\, and depicts\, the Great March of Return protests\, whose images Palestinians of slain medics\, journalists\, women\, children\, and disabled people resounded throughout the world in 2018. The Trump administration’s deepened support for the most extreme Israeli positions is also displayed in the film\, with clips of Trump’s moving of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and preparation for the “Deal of the Century.” \nThe government of Israel tightly restricts the presence of journalists in the Gaza. In order to work around these restrictions\, The Empire Files team collaborated with Palestinian videographers from Gaza. \nGaza is  the 25-mile long\, seven-mile wide strip of occupied and blockaded land that the World Health Organization has said will be unfit for human occupation by 2020. The description of Gaza as an “open-air prison” is commonly used these days\, but Gaza Fights for Freedom gives a visceral and painful view of this descriptor. Narrated by Martin\, the camera winds us through the streets of Gaza\, through the rubble of past Israeli aerial assaults–2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and intermittent years.  The attack in 2014 alone destroyed nearly 20\,000 homes. Gaza is unable to recover from this destruction\, rebuild or remove the debris due to the blockade. The film takes us through densely populated cities\, where families have no choice but to drink water unsafe for consumption. \nThe height of the Great March Of Return protests\, it features exclusive footage of demonstrations where 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by Israeli snipers since March 30\, 2018.

SUMMARY:A Way Forward: Healing from Racism
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Healing Racism is happy to invite you to the first conference on dismantling institutional racism. \nWhile the Center has worked tirelessly for 30 years to help individuals heal from internalized racial conditioning\, this conference will explore the systemic nature of racism in U.S. society; the ways in which the institutions in our country have created advantages and disadvantages for different groups of people. In bringing together a diverse group of communities\, our goal is to begin developing strategies for achieving a more just and equitable society. \nConference participants will include academics\, social justice activists\, artists and advocates of equity and equality who will examine the educational\, health care\, nutritional\, criminal justice and environmental systems of our society\, with an eye towards dismantling institutional racism and fostering a community in which all can thrive. \nAs an affiliate of Houston Community College\, we will also consider the impact of institutional racism on students\, faculty and the community at large\, presenting strategies for these groups to cope with the distress caused by systemic oppression\, which can diminish cognitive “bandwidth” and interfere with performance at school\, at work and in the world. \nFacilitators will also illustrate for conference participants the essence of Dialogue: Racism\, the process for intercultural communication developed by the Center for the Healing of Racism. \nFor more information\, or to register\, please visit https://chrantiracismconference.org
