SUMMARY:Houstonians for Migrant Justice Rally
DESCRIPTION:We live in a city where asylum seekers are being kept in detention centers\, one of which lies just outside Downtown and is housing teenagers indefinitely. These centers are run by the Southwest Key Programs\, whose leaders are profiting off of the detainment of children and have yet to share adequate information about the conditions in these centers. We\, as Houstonians\, are obligated to come together to stand with the migrants in our city and call out maltreatment of migrants when it occurs. This is why Houstonians for Migrant Justice is committed to the humanitarian care\, timely reunification\, and just legal representation for migrants sheltered in our community\, and transparency and accountability from the agencies that provide these services.  \nOur group intends to use this joint rally-fundraiser to pursue this transparency and accountability\, by engaging with elected officials and urging them to visit the Southwest Key detention centers in Houston and by raising money for a prominent group providing pro-bono legal aid to Houston migrants.  \nThe rally will be held on Saturday September 14\, tentatively from 5:30-8:30pm at the Casa Sunzal detention center (419 Emancipation Ave). We will meet at Settegast Park (3000 Garrow St) at 5:30pm and walk for about 5-10 minutes to the detention center.  \nIf you are interested in volunteering with us to fundraise and conduct community outreach\, please contact us here.

SUMMARY:The Silence of Others (El silencio de otros)
DESCRIPTION:Filmed over six years\, The Silence of Others reveals the epic struggle of victims from Spain’s dictatorship (1939-1975) under General Francisco Franco. A powerful and poetic cautionary tale about fascism\, and the dangers of forgetting the past\, the award-winning documentary offers a cinematic portrait of the first attempt in history to prosecute crimes of Franco whose perpetrators have enjoyed impunity for decades due to a 1977 amnesty law. Executive produced by Pedro Almodóvar\, the film brings to light a painful past that Spain is reluctant to face\, even today\, decades after the dictator’s death. \n“A plea against inaction.” – The New Yorker \n“Exceptionally moving… In a style evocative of the best of Patricio Guzmán… this film is a milestone in recovery of a past that is not over—and\, to invoke Faulkner\, not even past.” – IDA Documentary Magazine \n“A stirring documentary… a very necessary story\, delivered with rigor and conviction.” – The Hollywood Reporter \n“This courageous\, moving\, lithe\, necessary and eye-opening documentary dares to demand the truth.” – Cineuropa \n“Unfolding with all the force of a classic political thriller by Costa-Gavras or Francesco Rosi.” – Screen Daily \nRead an interview with the filmmakers.

SUMMARY:March for Justice
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nWe the People Organize First March for The Tuttles\nHouston— July 26\, 2019- We the People Organize will hold our first March and Rally for the Tuttles on Saturday\, July 27\, 2019. Nearly six months ago\, the Tuttles were killed in their Houston home as result of a botched raid by the Houston Police Department. \nOn Thursday’s press conference\, Mike Doyle\, Rhogena Tuttle’s lawyer\, released preliminary findings by forensics scientist Michael Maloney. The most outrageous finding was that Rhogena Tuttle was fatally struck by a bullet from a weapon fired outside her home by a person unable to see her. This evidence contradicts claims made by the Houston Police Department. We are calling for all of the evidence held by HPD to be released to the family. We are calling on Houstonians to join us on Saturday to march for justice for The Tuttles. \nWHEN: Saturday\, July 27\, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM\nWHERE: Staging area is at Mission Milby Community Center\n2220 Broadway Street\, Houston\, TX 77012\nRally at Tuttle’s home: 7815 Harding Street \nMedia Contact: Mr. Hai Bui of We the People Organize\, 281-330-4351\, hai@WethePeopleOrganize and WethePeopleOrganize.com

SUMMARY:Undeterred: Community Resistance on the US/Mexico Border (film showing & meet-n-greet w/filmmaker)
DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.   Eva Lewis and other town members will be here to discuss the film. \n  \nThe Problem\n\nThe Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects Americans from random and arbitrary stops and searches.\nAccording to the government\, however\, these basic constitutional principles do not apply fully at our borders. For example\, at border crossings (also called “ports of entry”)\, federal authorities do not need a warrant or even suspicion of wrongdoing to justify conducting what courts have called a “routine search\,” such as searching luggage or a vehicle.\n\nhttps://www.aclu.org/other/constitution-100-mile-border-zone for more info on the situation. \nTrailer: \n \n \nUndeterred Trailer from Deep Dish TV on Vimeo. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emergency Demonstration Against SWK's Child Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:On February 14\, Mayor Turner announced the elimination of the most important obstacles to the opening of Southwest Key’s new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue. His media advisory was misleading–it did not mention that a federal judge ruled against the City of Houston two months ago on the question of which permit is required. And now the administration’s previous expression of concern about sexual crimes\, abuse\, neglect\, and hundreds of other violations at SWK facilities seems to have disappeared! \nIn view of its awful record\, Southwest Key should not be allowed to house migrant children. The people of the most diverse city in the country have been opposing this facility since last June. And we must continue this struggle. We need to stop SWK from putting children at risk! The Free Los Niños Coalition will hold an emergency demonstration against SWK’s child detention center on Monday\, February 18\, at 5 pm. This will be the Coalition’s twelfth protest during the past eight months. The broadest possible participation is strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Christmas at the Jail 6
DESCRIPTION:Separation from a parent at Christmas time is difficult on any child but for the poor and innocent child\, separated by a two inch plate of glass\, it may be hardest of all. These blameless young enter a world of jailers and bars\, cold and frightening\, in a futile grasp at normalcy during perhaps the single most important family time of the year. \nThe emotional scars they experience and which may last a lifetime are ministered at Harris County Adult Detention Center by Santa Claus and several dozen elves who await these precious children as they walk out of the building. It is at this point that a miracle often occurs which can immediately be seen on the faces of these little ones. In the midst of the Fat Jolly Gentleman and piles of presents you can see their shaken faith in life return and a light of rekindled joy flicker in their eyes. \nJoin End Mass Incarceration Houston in association with Houston Peace and Justice Center and Bering United Methodist Church as we are blessed by the Angels at 1200 Baker Street in downtown Houston on Sunday December 23rd from 4 pm to 6 pm. \nToys may be dropped off during business hours at Bering United Methodist Church\, 1440 Harold Street Houston. Financial donations may be sent to www.HPJC.org or sent snail mail to Houston Peace and Justice Center\, PO Box 66234\, Houston\, TX 77006 and please make notation that donation is for the Christmas event. \nFor more information call Michael Allen at 281-714-8278

SUMMARY:SugarLand95 Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join Reginald Moore and the Convict Leasing and Labor Project for a community meeting about the future of the #SugarLand95. The CLLP and the National Black United Front of Houston strongly believe the remains should be reburied in the sacred ground where they were found. Fort Bend ISD is doing everything it can to block that from happening. \nWe need to show FBISD\, Houston and the world this isn’t just a “black” issue. They can’t just plan a quick “Black History Month” presentation and be done with it. This is one of the most important local issues of our time and the outcome is going to shape our awareness of racial history for decades to come.

SUMMARY:The Jerusalem Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Jerusalem Conference is a one-day conference on Thursday\, October 11 that brings together scholars\, ecumenical theologians\, and peace-doers around the topic of:\nJerusalem: What makes for Peace? \n\n\n\nThe recent move of the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has changed the conversation. Historic commitments to Jerusalem as a city for two people of three faiths are being threatened\, along with the hope for peace. While the importance of the city for Jews is not questioned\, its significance for Christians and Muslims\, and particularly Christians is overlooked. For people of faith and for those concerned with peace in the Middle East\, an inclusive Jerusalem is a must. So\, what do we need to understand about the current political realities in Jerusalem\, the implications of theological frameworks of the city\, and current US and foreign policy? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinally\, what steps can we\, as faith leaders take together and in our own networks to advance peace in this region? \nIn addition to responding to this urgent moment\, The Jerusalem Conference is\, in part\, a follow up from the 2016 Atlanta Summit at the Carter Center hosted by President Carter\, which brought together key representatives from 26 denominations as well as numerous faith-based organizations working towards a just peace in Israel/Palestine. This one day conference offers a timely exploration of Jerusalem as key to peace in the Middle East. Together\, we will identify concrete steps and goals towards advancing the vision of an inclusive\, diverse\, and equitable Jerusalem

SUMMARY:Migrant Children in Crisis - National Public Witness Event at the Border
DESCRIPTION:Join people of good conscience\, physicians and faith leaders bringing visibility to the human rights violations of the 134\,000 children detained in 2017 by immigration (we have already exceeded this number for 2018). Come as a volunteer in a caravan of cars filled with relief supplies\, including bottled water (no sparkling or flavored)\, easy open and individual sized fruit\, peanut butter\, veggies\, protein snacks\, cereals\, crackers\, natural juices\, bags of dry rice\, canned beans/soup\, and blankets. We are heading to Ursula CBP detention facility in McAllen\, Texas to bear witness to a system that has for too long ignored the basic needs of migrant children in immigration detention. It took 12 years to secure the Flores settlement\, which continues to be actively litigated to protect the human rights of these children. But\, with all eyes on family separation and the dehumanization and deprivations of just 3\,000 children\, we have a historic opportunity to demand expedient change for 134\,000 others annually.  We have a FREE bus to fill\, donated by a very generous nonprofit partner.

SUMMARY:Migrant Children in Crisis - Dehumanization and Deprivation in Immigration Detention
DESCRIPTION:This is an interactive community event that begins with a conversation between physicians and faith leaders. The conversation will focus on the dehumanization and deprivations of children in immigration detention\, that compounds the trauma from the conditions from which they flee and the harrowing journey towards the specter of freedom that follows. People of good conscience gathered in the audience will break into groups for discussion about the issues and to explore ways to take action. This event is FREE. Light bites will be provided. Spanish language translation services supported by Antena Houston.
