Patrisse Cullors is an artist, organizer, educator, public speaker, social activist, New York Times best-selling author, and co-creator of the viral Twitter hashtag and movement, #BlackLivesMatter. A Los Angeles native, she is a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and founder of grassroots, Los Angeles based organization Dignity and Power Now.

Nationwide outrage sparked the beginning of Latinos as a political force in the U.S.
In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Center for the Healing of Racism will be screening the “The Longoria Affair.”
The Center for Healing Racism is happy to invite you to the first conference on dismantling institutional racism.
While the Center has worked tirelessly for 30 years to help individuals heal from internalized racial conditioning, this conference will explore the systemic nature of racism in U.S. society; the ways in which the institutions in our country have created advantages and disadvantages for different groups of people. In bringing together a diverse group of communities, our goal is to begin developing strategies for achieving a more just and equitable society.
Conference participants will include academics, social justice activists, artists and advocates of equity and equality who will examine the educational, health care, nutritional, criminal justice and environmental systems of our society, with an eye towards dismantling institutional racism and fostering a community in which all can thrive.
As an affiliate of Houston Community College, we will also consider the impact of institutional racism on students, faculty and the community at large, presenting strategies for these groups to cope with the distress caused by systemic oppression, which can diminish cognitive “bandwidth” and interfere with performance at school, at work and in the world.

Never Again Action-Houston will hold a demonstration at the home of David Denenburg at 3043 Locke Ln, on Monday, December 23, beginning at 5:30 pm. Denenburg is a co-owner of the building at 419 Emancipation Avenue which is being leased to Southwest Key for use as an immigrant child detention center. We demand that Denenburg cancel the lease with Southwest Key and that this facility and all other immigrant detention centers be closed! We demand that all the raids and deportations targeting immigrants end!

Never Again Action-Houston will hold a second COVID-safe, car-only demonstration to demand the closure of the Southwest Key detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue on Sunday, April 19, at 1:30 pm. We will assemble in the parking lot diagonally across from the detention center and place signs on our cars--at a safe distance from each other. Please bring your own signs and tape! Then we will form a caravan and drive around the detention center, honking and chanting as we go, for about one hour.

In 2014, Ai Weiwei, the renowned Chinese artist and activist, assisted by curator and filmmaker Cheryl Haines, transformed the former penitentiary
on Alcatraz Island into an astonishing exhibition of socially engaged art, focusing on the plight of the unjustly incarcerated. Visitors were invited to send postcards to prisoners in the exhibition. Several of the formerly imprisoned activists, including Chelsea Manning, speak about the impact of receiving those messages of hope.
