SUMMARY:Silencing Opposition: Human Rights Violations in Burundi
DESCRIPTION:ORA Pre-Program: Silencing Opposition: Human Rights Violations in Burundi\nConversation with Former Ambassador Robert Krueger and Tony Tate\, The Fund for Global Human Rights \nAbout the presenters:\nRobert Krueger is a former US Representative and US Senator from Texas\, and served as US Ambassador on three occasions: to Mexico\, Burundi\, and Botswana; and additionally as US Special Representative to the Southern African Development Community. During his service in Burundi\, Krueger’s outspokenness on human rights issues provoked an ambush of his convoy in which two persons were killed and eight grievously wounded. Former President Bill Clinton\, addressing seven African presidents in Washington said\, “Our symbols need to be people like Ambassador Krueger\, who risked his life to keep people alive in Burundi.” Nobert Ndihokubwayo\, member of Burundi Parliament said\, “An ambassador out of the ordinary\, he went to the country side to see for himself the atrocities committed against a population afraid to speak out. He viewed massacre sites and visited the wounded at their hospital beds. This man of peace and exceptional courage contributed immensely to the defense of human rights for the population of Burundi; even today\, his name reminds people of the love and hope that he gave to the people of Burundi.” His book on living amid genocide in Burundi\, From Bloodshed to Hope in Burundi\, was published in 2007 by the University of Texas Press. Krueger holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University\, and served as a Professor of English and as Vice Provost and Dean of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. He currently lives with his family in New Braunfels\, Texas. \nTony Tate began working with the Fund for Global Human Rights as the program officer for Sub-Saharan Africa in October 2010. He oversees the Fund’s grant making programs in Burundi\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Before joining the Fund\, Tony was a program officer at Unbound Philanthropy\, responsible for the development of the organization’s international programs. Prior to his work at Unbound Philanthropy\, Tony worked for seven years as a researcher at Human Rights Watch\, first as their in-country researcher in Burundi\, later as the Africa researcher in the Children’s Rights Division. At Human Rights Watch\, he investigated and published reports on human rights violations in numerous countries in central\, eastern and southern Africa. In the 1990s\, Tony worked as a case manager at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Comoros Islands. He has a J.D. from the City University of New York School of Law\, an M.A. in international affairs and African studies from Columbia University\, and a B.A. from the George Washington University. Tony is a member of the advisory committee of the Children’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch and is fluent in French and conversant in Swahili.

SUMMARY:The Journey of Hope...From Violence to Healing
DESCRIPTION:The Journey of Hope…From Violence to Healing puts human faces on the issue of the death penalty. Led by murder victim family members joined by death row families\, the exonerated and others impacted by the failed promises of a broken system. Our unique personal stories touch people’s hearts and change people’s minds on this vitally important issue. We advocate for alternatives to the death penalty\, we encourage forgiveness as a way of healing and endorse restorative justice as a way of life. \nJourney Storytellers come from all walks of life and represent the full spectrum and diversity of faith\, ethnicity and economic situation. We have experienced the insanity and horror of murder and its tragic aftermath. We reject the death penalty as a failed public policy and as a solution to ending our pain. Presentations can be adapted to the needs of the inviting venue but our preferred program opportunities feature the teaming of a murder victim family member with a death row family member\, an exoneree\, a death row survivor\, a family member of the executed\, or others impacted by the failed promises of a broken system. Many Venues such as high schools\, colleges and universities\, churches and religious settings\, community\, civic\, and professional organizations offer opportunities to open dialogue on how the death penalty prolongs suffering and prevents healing. Our speakers share their stories about the process of healing through forgiveness and reconciliation. They call for alternatives to the death penalty and an end to the cycle of violence that creates more murder victim family members.

SUMMARY:The Mask of Microaggressions: Studies of Racism in the US
DESCRIPTION:Authors Mark Tschaepe and Ronald Goodwin will discuss their new book\, The Mask of Microaggressions: Studies of Racism in the US\, on Wednesday\, October 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Center for the Healing of Racism\, 3412 Crawford St.\, Houston\, 77004. Tschaepe and Goodwin\, assistant professors at Prairie View A&M University\, will also sign copies of books purchased at the event.\n\nMicroaggressions are commonly defined as brief\, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their race or ethnicity.  It is thought that they often occur below the level of awareness of well-intentioned members of the dominant culture.  Whether intentional or unintentional\, microaggressions communicate hostile\, derogatory or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color. \n \nThe event is free and open to the public (first 50 to RSVP).  Registration required by emailing cfhr1@juno.com or calling (713) 520-8226. SUMMARY:Double Jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System
DESCRIPTION:2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Pre-Program\nDouble jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System\nConversation and Book Signing with Julie Bindel \nWomen of sex trafficking face the dual realities of being victims while also being prosecuted as offenders. Join Julie Bindel in conversation with Houston activists and advocates as they explore this topic from both local and global perspectives. \nIn her most recent book “The Pimping of Prostitution\,” Bindel takes the debate on prostitution legislation head-on\, exposing the lived realities of women in contrast with the dominant discourse in current academic and liberal feminist debates. \nBased on more than 250 interviews with people involved in and affected by prostitution around the world\, Bindel exposes the harms of the global sex trade and documents the emergence of the exciting and vibrant survivor abolitionist movement – leading us to question when the policy makers\, politicians and international human rights organizations will start to reject the mythology around prostitution\, hold sex buyers accountable for the damage that they do\, and truly begin to fight for the human rights of women around the world. \nThis program will be followed by a public reception and book signing on the plaza. \nAbout the presenter:\nA renowned investigative journalist\, Julie Bindel has written extensively on a range of topics including violence against women\, the international surrogacy trade\, mail order brides\, trafficking\, and unsolved murders. She writes regularly for The Guardian\, New Statesman\, The International Business Times\, and The Spectator\, and frequently appears on the BBC and Sky News. She was Visiting Journalist at Brunel University\, UK (2013 – 2014) and is now on the Advisory Board of Byline.com. \nThis program builds upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium and this year’s focus of our biannual Rothko Chapel’s Óscar Romero Award\, which recognizes courageous\, grassroots human rights advocacy. This year the Chapel will honor two recipients\, one internationally and the other locally selected. To learn more about the Award Ceremony and other related programs please click here.

SUMMARY:Art and Incarceration: Poetry\, Theatre and Music in and about Captivity
DESCRIPTION:Concert\, Ensemble Pi\nFor this interdisciplinary performance\, Ensemble Pi presents music\, text\, and theater works that focus on the rise of mass incarceration\, the racial disparities it reveals\, and the emotional toll it takes on inmates and their families. The concert opens with Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece\, Coming Together\, composed in the wake of the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York and powerfully expressing the frustration of life behind bars and anger about injustice. The evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Rikers Islandby New York composer Eleanor Cory\, inspired by the anthology These Are Hard Times for Dreamers. Joseph Assadourian\, the narrator for Coming Together\, will also perform an excerpt from his tragi-comic play\, The Bullpen\, based on his own incarceration. The performance closes with the sublime Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941)\, composed and performed in the prisoner-of-war camp in Gorlitz\, Germany\, capturing the hardship and sadness of being in prison\, while still conveying optimism. \nAbout the presenters:\nEnsemble Pi is a new music collective that uniquely connects pressing social and political issues and the idioms of classical contemporary music. We began our Peace Concerts series 10 years ago in response to the invasion of Iraq\, and have since presented annual chamber music concerts giving voice to the struggle for peace. Every concert includes at least one commission\, as well as contemporary classical masterpieces to address the historical tradition of “socially conscious” compositions. In the past\, we’ve collaborated with visual artists\, writers\, journalists and actors – including South African artist William Kentridge and American journalists Naomi Wolf and Jeremy Scahill – and have featured the music of John Harbison\, Frederic Rzewski\, Shostakovich and Penderecki. Our series has voiced protest against the Iraqi invasion\, but also the censorship of media\, fracking\, the Apartheid\, and more. Performers include: Alexis Gerlach\, cello; Moran Katz\, clarinet; Idith Meshulam Korman\, piano; Airi Yoshioka\, violin; and Joseph Assadourian\, actor and narrator.

SUMMARY:Houston Anarchist Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:Announcing the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair! On Sunday September 24\, 2017\, Houston Anarchist Black Cross will host a one-day convergence to network\, grow\, and celebrate anarchist and anti-authoritarian projects in Texas and the surrounding region. Join us for books\, workshops\, and discussion to celebrate and expand our southern radical communities of resistance! \nWe welcome proposals for workshops\, panels\, film screenings and the like\, and especially encourage people from Texas\, neighboring states\, and the south and southwest/la frontera generally to submit proposals. Proposals are due August 1 and can be submitted on the form at http://www.houstonanarchistbookfair2017.wordpress.com \nWe will also have opportunities for publishers\, distros\, bookstores and others to table. If you’d like to volunteer\, get in touch with us at htxanarchistbookfair2017@gmail.com and tell us a little bit about yourself and what aspect you’re interested in helping with. \nThe event is free\, with no registration required. We are committed to making this a safe\, welcoming space for all people who are genuinely interested in the Anarchist Bookfair\, including gender diverse folks\, people with disabilities\, parents\, children\, femmes\, women and people of color. If you experience harassment\, abuse\, assault\, or any other kind of violation during the book fair\, or if someone who has engaged in such behavior in the past is adversely affecting your participation at the book fair\, or if you need support for any other reason\, please do reach out to us at htxanarchistbookfair2017@gmail.com. \nFAQ \nQ: Can I participate if I am not an anarchist? \nA: Absolutely! Whether you are a communist or other type of radical looking to network with like-minded people\, or simply curious to learn more about anarchism and radical projects going on in Houston and the region\, we want to welcome everyone who is genuine in their interest in the bookfair. On the other hand\, fascists\, cops\, trolls\, and others who only wish to subvert the purpose of the book fair are most decidedly not welcome. \nQ: What is anarchism anyway? \nA: We’re sure that every anarchist at the bookfair would offer a different\, and at times divergent\, definition of anarchism. But here’s one quick definition! \nAnarchism is a set of revolutionary political ideas which seek a fundamental transformation of society toward expansive visions of individual and social freedom. Within this is a comprehensive critique and rejection of all forms of hierarchy and structured relationships of domination–including the State\, capitalism\, white supremacy\, patriarchy and hetero-sexism–as well as visions of a free society built on human freedom\, equality\, solidarity\, and mutual aid. \nQ: Why a book fair? \nA: Anarchists around the world have long organized bookfairs as spaces to gather\, share ideas\, and network. In the age of e-readers and digital\, online organizing\, the idea of a bookfair may sound anachronistic. But we believe that much of the power that our political movements have and can build grows out of the relationships we have with one another–as individuals\, organizations\, and communities. And when it comes to building relationships\, there is really no substitute for face to face interaction\, sharing space\, and learning and working together. We hope to facilitate that with the workshops\, presentations\, and discussions that are being planned\, and the space that we create. There will also certainly be plenty of books\, pamphlets\, t-shirts\, and stickers available! As the late Texas-born anarchist Lucy Parsons said\, “Anarchists know that a long period of education must precede any great fundamental change in society\, hence they do not believe in vote begging\, nor political campaigns\, but rather in the development of self-thinking individuals.” \nQ: Why now? \nA: The United States has long been a terrifying landscape for many across the world–a white-supremacist\, settler-colonialist\, capitalist\, hetero-patriarchy. The rise of the Trump regime and the grassroots fascist right has stripped away much of the old window dressing and intensified the myriad attacks on people of color\, women\, poor people\, queer and trans people\, Muslims and Jews\, migrants\, and others. Millions want to begin fighting back or redouble their efforts. \nThose who are newer to the resistance might be looking to get plugged in\, learn new skills\, and sharpen their analysis. Those who have been in the game for a minute might be looking to find new inspiration\, new camaraderie\, new creativity\, and fresh perspective. All of us are looking for ways to move forward together in dark times. Our gatherings are more important now than ever. \nQ: Why Houston? \nA: Texas\, and especially Houston\, has a well-earned reputation for being the epicenter of the U.S. petrochemical industry\, the locus of reactionary political movements that were laughed at until they came to power\, and the home state of several war criminal presidents. Usually thought of as backward or irredeemable rather than hip\, radical\, or enlightened\, the whole region is often overlooked by much of the U.S. left that is concentrated on either coast. \nBut there is–and always has been–resistance here too: from the Black soldiers at Fort Logan who went to war against the police and Jim Crowe in 1917\, to the neighborhood that rebelled in 1977 when the cops who murdered Joe Campos Torres got off with a $1 fine; from hosting the first National Chicana Conference in 1971\, to hosting the National Women’s Conference (and the radical feminist protests outside of it!) in 1977; from direct actions against war profiteer Halliburton and logging company Maxxam in 2004-05 to resistance to the Tar Sands blockade against the Keystone XL pipeline a couple years ago; from the 2003 Radical Encuentro Camp to the 2011 Houston Anarchist Bookfair. Resistance in the belly of the beast has always been strong! \nTrue\, Houston has never had as large of a radical community as some places\, nor as many resources. But we’ve always forged ahead with the utmost spirit\, creativity\, and tenacity. In this tradition\, we are proud to welcome anarchists and other radicals from across the region to the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair!

SUMMARY:A Dialogue About Tears We Cannot Stop
DESCRIPTION:Working as a white ally against racism is hard but not impossible.  One thing that doesn’t help the cause is saying “I don’t see color.”  The failure to see color only benefits white America.  A world without color is a world without racial debt.  Rather\, the most radical action a white person can take is to acknowledge privilege\, to admit that in the institutional and deep psychological structures of the United States\, the underlying assumption is that white lives are worth more than black lives. \nHelp the Center for the Healing of Racism develop better allies by participating in a dialogue about the book Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America by Michael Eric Dyson.  Dr. Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University\, an ordained minister\, author of 20 books\, a writer for the New York Times\, and an editor for both The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated Ebony.\n\nPlease join us on Tuesday\, August 29\, 2017 from noon to 2:00 pm -or- Wednesday\, August 30\, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The events will take place at 3412 Crawford Street (corner of Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The events are free and open to the public but registration is required. Contributions are appreciated.  RSVP cfhr1@juno.com or 713-520-8226.  Free parking is available in HCC Lot 9\, across the street from our office.\n \nhttp://www.centerhealingracism.org/

SUMMARY:Hannah Arendt movie "the Banality of evil"
DESCRIPTION:Hannah Arendt is a 2012 German-Luxembourgish-French biographical drama film directed by Margarethe von Trotta and starring Barbara Sukowa. The film centers in the life of German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt.[3] It is distributed by Zeitgeist Films in the United States\, where it opened theatrically on 29 May 2013.[4][5] \nGerman director von Trotta’s film centers on Arendt’s response to the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann\, which she covered for The New Yorker. Her writing on the trial became controversial for its depiction of both Eichmann and the Jewish councils\, and for its introduction of Arendt’s now-famous concept of “the banality of evil“.

SUMMARY:"If a Tree Falls" Film Screening and Vegan Tamale Sale
DESCRIPTION:June 11 is the International Day of Solidarity with Marius Mason and All Long-Term Anarchist Prisoners! We will be screening If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (2011)\, writing letters and cards of support to anarchist political prisoners\, and selling vegan tamales at a sliding scale to raise money for Marius!\n \nIf A Tree Falls tells the remarkable story of one cell of the Earth Liberation Front\, by focusing on the transformation\nand radicalization of one of its members\, Daniel McGowan. Part coming-of-age tale\, part cops-and-robbers thriller\, the film interweaves a verite chronicle of Daniel on house arrest as he faces life in prison\, with a dramatic recounting of the events that led to his involvement with the group. And along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism\, activism\, and the way we define terrorism. \nChildren are very welcome and Solidarity Houston has a children’s corner with books\, crafts\, and games. \nSolidarity Houston is wheelchair accessible space through the front entrance\, and has one gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathroom (does not have an accessibility bar). The space is not currently scent free. Service animals always welcome\, non-human animal companions are welcome as well. If you have any other accessibility needs or questions\, please email us at houston_abc@riseup.net! \nParking is in the back of the space\, along the train tracks. We recommend you don’t park in the Mi Charro lot\, as they are known to tow people\, but if you need an accessible space to park make sure you don’t park in a marked spot. Bikes can come into the space. The new green line of the metro rail has a stop right in front of the space\, for those using public transportation.

SUMMARY:A Tilted Guide to Being A Defendant: Book Presentation and Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:From Black Lives Matter to Standing Rock to the resistance against the Trump regime\, thousands of people across the country have faced arrest and prosecution in recent years for their political actions and activity. They find the legal system confusing\, alienating\, and isolating\, and the government is often successful at using criminal charges to disrupt\, destroy\, and neutralize radical and revolutionary struggles for liberation. \nJoin us for this presentation and discussion from the Tilted Scales Collective (tiltedscalescollective.org) to talk about how to leverage your goals and values–personal\, political\, and legal–in your court battle\, and how to leverage your court case to strengthen our revolutionary struggles for liberation. By thinking and acting strategically and being in solidarity with each other\, we can turn these terrible situations in movement-building ones! \nThe event is based on the ideas in the recent book A TILTED GUIDE TO BEING A DEFENDANT\, which draws on the wisdom of dozens of people who have weathered the challenges of trials and incarceration\, including many former and current political prisoners/prisoners of war. This event is part of a nationwide tour aiming to help strengthen our movements on all fronts and take away the power of criminal charges. The book will be available for sale at a dicount at the event! \nChildren are very welcome and Solidarity Houston has a children’s corner with books\, crafts\, and games. \nSolidarity Houston is wheelchair accessible space through the front entrance\, and has one gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathroom (does not have an accessibility bar). SUMMARY:Meet filmmaker Regis Tremblay 11:59:30-Thirty Seconds to Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Reception with  Regis Tremblay \nMy new documentary\, Thirty Seconds to Midnight\, is ready and we will show it in Houston\, TX \nThis has been a very long\, three year project that began with my first feature documentary\, The Ghosts of Jeju. It was then that I realized the U.S. plan for full spectrum dominance of the planet. My research and interest since then has focused on the trajectory of Manifest Destiny since the white\, European explorers came to the Americas in the 15th Century. Blessed by the Pope of Rome\, the Doctrine of Discovery gave the illegal immigrants from Europe the right to the land and its resources and permission to kill all of the savages that inhabited those lands. From that time on\, these white\, European\, illegal immigrants\, and later the newly formed United States of America\, continued to massacre millions of Native Americans. Those that were not killed either died of disease\, starvation or were herded onto reservations where they lived in squalor. As the film makes clear\, violence and killing have been part of the American narrative from the very beginning. \nThe United States of America was built on slavery and later the commodification of labor. Eventually\, the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny were applied to the entire world. Since 1798\, the United States has invaded more than 500 countries and murdered tens of millions of innocent people\, stealing their resources and destroying entire civilizations. Just since WWII\, the United States has planned and orchestrated coups\, assassinations\, regime changes\, color revolutions\, drone killings\, and murdered more than 20 million innocent men\, women and children. And the slaughter continues today in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Iraq\, Libya\, Syria\, Yemen\, Somalia and throughout Africa and South America. \nWith the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, America ushered in a new era in human history that has all life on earth on the brink of extinction\, and this is the theme of Thirty Seconds to Midnight. There are only three threats to life on the planet\, and only three. They are\, a nuclear holocaust\, nuclear power that is not safe\, and climate change. As Dr. Helen Caldicott says in the film\, “We are like lemmings walking towards the cliff and worrying about things that don’t matter.” \nSince going to Jeju Island\, I have returned to the Pacific to document the presence and effects of U.S. militarism from Hawaii all the way down to the Marshall Islands. In this past year\, I travelled to Germany\, Ukraine and to Russia because not only is America threatening to choke off China with the Pivot to Asia\, but America has also been threatening Russia since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union with thousands of US/NATO troops\, bases and missiles on Russia’s borders. The threat of nuclear war with these two nuclear-armed countries is greater now than during the Cold War. \nAnd so it is\, America’s destiny has all life on the planet on the very brink of extinction. As Dr. Caldicott wonders at the end of the film\, “Are we an evolutionary aberration designed in an evolutionary sense not to survive? I wonder.”

SUMMARY:13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Cardoza\, an afro-indigenous feminist leader from Honduras\, is coming to Houston on May 22\, together with Honduran singer-songwriter Karla Lara\, as part of a tour of the U.S. promoting the new bilingual Spanish-English edition of Melissa’s book\, 13 colores de la resistencia hondureña / 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance. \nThe book tells the stories of several women who were involved in the massive movement of resistance that arose after the coup d’état that took place in Honduras in 2009. The coup unleashed conditions of greatly increased corruption and impunity. The violence and harms stemming from this have not diminished to this day. \nAlicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter Network comments: \n<<13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. These stories of bravery\, of struggle and pain\, and ultimately of a resilience rooted in a love for freedom will grip your heart. Cardoza is brilliant in storytelling\, and ensures that\, in memory of our sister Berta Cáceres\, feminisms are three dimensional and span multiple experiences—trans\, Black\, elderly\, and more. The lessons contained in these stories offer important reflections for all revolutionaries.>> \nThe book’s English translator\, Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle writes: \n<<Melissa calls those the times “when protests were poetry in the streets.” Few people could better turn that poetry in the streets into prose on the page than she. A fearless journalist in the most dangerous country in the world for a reporter\, a lesbian in a land where LGBT people regularly turn up as cadavers in the streets\, an activist in a place where the faces of the disappeared line countless walls\, an afro-indigenous woman in a region where racism continues to take a deadly toll\, Melissa is a writer who knows the meaning of resistance.>> \nAt the event\, Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara will perform stories from the book using a mixed-media format of storytelling\, acting and song. That will be followed by discussion about the situation in Honduras\, Berta Cáceres\, her legacy and #JusticeforBerta campaign\, and transnational movement-connections. \nBoth were close friends of the late Berta Cáceres\, who was assassinated a year ago\, and led COPINH (http://copinhenglish.blogspot.com/)\, a resistance movement of the indigenous Lenca people of western Honduras that has stopped dams\, mines\, and other destructive “projects of death” as Berta called them. \nRelated links: \nTour info: http://ggjalliance.org/book-tour-2017-13-colors-honduran-resistance \nA poetic and musical presentation by Melissa Cardoza (in Spanish):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruEmqjnZhKE \nPlease come and invite your friends to join in this unique experience!

SUMMARY:“Vincent Who?” - Birth of the Asian American Civil Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:The 1982 murder of Vincent Chin\, a 27-year-old Chinese American\, marked the birth of the Asian American civil rights movement.  When Chin’s killers\, two white autoworkers\, got off with a $3\,000 fine and probation\, Asian Americans throughout the United States were outraged. Their protests gave rise to a pan-Asian identity and solidarity that hadn’t existed before\, as well as a broadening of federal civil rights protection.\n \nIn commemoration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, the Center for the Healing of Racism will screen the documentary “Vincent Who?” on Thursday\, May 18\, 2017 from 7 to 9 PM.  The film will be followed by a dialogue.  Location: 3412 Crawford Street (at Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004. The event is free and open to the public (first 45 to RSVP). Donations are encouraged. Registration required by emailing cfhr1@juno.com or calling (713) 520-8226. Space is limited to the first 45 reservations. Free parking is available across the street at Houston Community College lot #9.\n\nhttp://www.centerhealingracism.org/

SUMMARY:How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We can do about it
DESCRIPTION:The BAUUC Service and Justice Ministry (SJM) invite all to hear acclaimed author and scholar Chuck Collins discuss\, “How wealth inequality is wrecking the world and what we can do about it”.  The event is scheduled for March 22nd\, 7 to 9PM \nThe year Chuck Collins turned 16\, his father took him aside for a man-to-man talk. Edward Collins told his son that he had set up a substantial trust fund for him.\nChuck remembers feeling utter amazement. The great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and an heir to the wiener fortune\, he had grown up living comfortably\, but not lavishly\, in suburban Detroit. Now\, as his father spelled out\, he realized he would not have to work for money unless he wanted to. His dad also stressed his hope that the money would not change his son or his life goals. It didn’t. However\, events took a very different course from the one the elder Collins had so carefully planned.
