SUMMARY:Film: Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis \nIntroduced by filmmaker Kathleen Dowdey \n\n\n\n\n\nFree admission \nA panel discussion follows the screening \nIn 1965\, the historic Selma March known as Bloody Sunday was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. John Lewis—now a U.S. Congressman\, then a young student—co-led hundreds of peaceful marchers seeking voting rights for African Americans in the South. When they came face to face with a wall of Alabama state troopers\, Lewis took a steadfast\, nonviolent stand and encouraged his followers to do the same. Seventy-six-year-old Lewis is a respected legislator and elder statesman who continues to practice nonviolence in his determined fight for justice. The film is a riveting portrayal of Lewis’s personal journey of courage\, searing disappointments\, and hard-won triumphs. Over the decades—including on the House floor this past June—he inspires others to “get in the way.” \nAbout the Speaker\nKathleen Dowdey’s unique portrayal of documentary subjects is a refreshing fusion of personalized voice\, layered observations and revelatory moments. She is a storyteller and award-winning filmmakter attracted to people deeply immersed in their cultures\, driven by their history\, thrust into change and struggling to adapt. Her exceptional artistry in Get in the Way has its roots in her early work\, including A Celtic Trilogy\, a documentary exploration of the renaissance of identity in the Celtic nations\, Blue Heaven a narrative feature that exposes the hidden traumas of domestic violence and Dawn’s Early Light\, a portrait of newspaper editor Ralph McGill\, a segregationist-turned-advocate of tolerance in a deeply polarized South. As a television writer\, director and producer\, Dowdey’s work is broadcast on networks including CBS/Paramount\, NBC\, PBS\, the History Channel\, Discovery\, Turner Broadcasting and others. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America\, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the International Documentary Association.

SUMMARY:Kashmir cries for justice
DESCRIPTION:According to Amnesty International\, as of June 2015 no member of the Indian security forces has been tried in civil courts for thousands of human rights violations committed against the oppressed people of Kashmir in the past three decades. We appeal to the people of conscience to join hands to hold the Government of India accountable for its crimes against humanity.\nOn July 23rd\, we will gather in Houston and speak on behalf of the 12 year old girl who\, last week\, was stripped in front of her family. We will raise our voice on behalf of a brother and sister who were taking their ailing mother to the hospital but on the way\, the Indian forces molested the sister and knocked the brother unconscious while the ailing mother’s pleas were answered by batons. We will cry on behalf of the 14 year old girl who’s dreams to become a doctor were shattered when pallets fired from the gun of an Indian soldier blinded her for the rest of her life and many hundreds like her\, who have partially or permanently lost their eyesight to these lethal pallets. We will shed tears for the innocent lives that have fallen to the bullets of the Indian guns in the last 10 days and tens of thousands in the last three decades. We will speak on behalf of the  parents who are in perpetual and painful grief for their missing children. We will  ask for the identity of the dead in the un-marked mass graves. We will demand justice for the scores of women and minor girls of Kunan and Poshpora villages of Kashmir who were mass and gang raped on a cold night of February 1991 by the Indian Army.\n\nOn July 23rd\, we will raise our voices in solidarity with countless people in and outside of Kashmir and say ‘No’ to injustice and ‘Yes’ to peace. Please stand with us. Together we will protest for Kashmir!! \n!‪#‎Kashmir ‪#‎KashmirSiege ‪#‎KashmirCrisis ‪#‎FreeKashmir ‪#‎kashmirprotests

SUMMARY:Presentation on Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Activism Against the Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta\, a Quaker Jewish activist and writer from Burnaby\, B.C.\, Canada will be in Houston to speak and do a presentation on nonviolence in Palestine.  She will share information about nonviolent activism by Palestinians and Israelis\, separately and together\, in challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land–as this is a much under-publicized aspect of the Palestinian struggle–as well as ways in which “Internationals” can support these efforts. \nShe will also introduce her book: “Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation”.  The book is an interview-based study that presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence\, the vast majority either Palestinian or Israeli\, as they reflect on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations toward the occupation. \nMore info at http://refusingtobeenemiesthebook.wordpress.com \nCopies of Refusing to be Enemies will be available for purchase and signing.

Today Democracy Now! is the largest public media collaboration in the US\, broadcasting on over 1400 public television and radio stations around the world\, with millions accessing it online at democracynow.org. Now Amy\, along with her journalist brother\, David and co-author Denis Moynihan\, share stories of the heroes—the whistleblowers\, the organizers\, the protesters—who have brought about remarkable change. \nThis important book looks back over the past two decades of Democracy Now!and the powerful movements and charismatic leaders who are re-shaping our world. Goodman takes the reader along as she goes to where the silence is\, bringing out voices from the streets of Ferguson\, to Staten Island\, Wall Street\, South Carolina to East Timor—and other places where people are rising up to demand justice. Democracy Now! is the modern day underground railroad of information\, bringing stories from the grassroots to a global audience.

SUMMARY:Confronting Inequality: Alternative Economies\, Resilient Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Rothko Chapel has scheduled a four-day symposium exploring economic inequality and ways communities can improve and sustain local economies. March 31-April 3 \n“Confronting Inequality: Alternative Economies\, Resilient Communities” is slated to start with the keynote at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, March 31. \nTerry Tempest Williams\, author\, conservationist and activist\, will serve as keynote. She is known for speaking out on behalf of taking an ethical stance on life – and frequently discusses the social implications of environmental issues\, which are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. \n“Williams asks her audience to consider a different type of power\, one that could be redistributed equally\,” Rothko Chapel executive director David Leslie said. “She is a fascinating figure\, who has testified before Congress on women’s health issues\, been a guest at the White House and camped in the remote wilderness in Alaska and worked as a barefoot artist in Rwanda.” \nWilliams is currently the Annie Clark Tanner Scholar in Environmental Humanities at the University of Utah.\nThe conversation will continue in greater depth through interactive panel discussions – from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday\, April 1 and from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday\, April 2 and Sunday\, April 3. For a full schedule\, visit rothkochapel.org. \nA variety of noted speakers will delve into the relationship between economic inequality\, spirituality\, gender\, environmental sustainability\, systems of power\, oppression and art. \n“Each panel is diverse\, consisting of spiritual leaders\, academics\, activists\, and artists — in order to make sure the conversation is grounded in both theory and real-world applications\,” public programs director Michelle Ashton said. \nDavid Leslie added that the symposium is particularly timely. \n“With the nation experiencing the impact of economic inequality and the erosion of the middle class\, alternative economic and community development models have gained even greater attention\, particularly urban cooperative economies in cities like Houston and Detroit\, as well as cooperatives and rural communities throughout the country\,” he said. “This symposium presents an opportunity to bring together a broad range of thinkers to focus on creative\, effective responses to eliminating economic inequality.” \nLeslie explained that inequality is not only an economic and political problem – but also raises moral questions about interconnectedness in society. \n“In response to these questions\, innovative alternative economies are emerging locally\, nationally and globally that have the potential to create a more equitable\, socialy responsible and environmentally sustainable world\,” he said. “This symposium will offer an in-depth exploration of these ideas.” \nEach panel will be preceded by interactive experiences for the audience\, including meditation and poetry reading. Receptions will be held following the discussions.
