SUMMARY:Living the Change
DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions must come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 8%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal.   \n\n\n\nParticipants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money. The course was developed in response to the Walk on Earth Gently multifaith statement\, inspired by religious teachings to turn away from consumerism & to seek balanced relationships with all people and the planet. \n\n\n\nWalk on Earth Gently invites you into a journey of Living the Change that the world needs. This program will work individually with participants\, on dates and times that work for both them and the facilitator.  Those already far along on their carbon footprint reduction journey may only need a few sessions with the facilitator to complete their 50% carbon footprint reduction plan\, whereas others may need more sessions.  Accept the Walk on Earth Gently invitation and commit to a sustainable lifestyle.   \n\n\n\nRegister for this course on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1507561550179. Meeting dates and times are individually scheduled.  For more information\, please contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Faithful Voter Weekly Online Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:As people of faith and conscience\, we believe elections are a referendum on the values that will shape our future. How can we renew our fragile democracy? How do we honor the human dignity of every person? Will we protect our Sacred Earth and our children’s future? What policies will prioritize the common good and confront future crises that remind us of our interdependence? Many of the defining moral issues of our time are on the ballot: faltering democratic institutions\, too much wealth in the hands of a few\, damage to the climate\, cruel immigration policies that tear families apart\, mass incarceration that devastates communities of color\, senseless gun violence\, and threats to global public health and security. These challenges are daunting. To move forward in a spirit of hope\, and to resist despair and cynicism\, join this weekly discussion group where we’ll navigate the urgent moral questions raised by the coming election\, allowing you to discern your path forward. Can’t make it every week? Join as you are able\, or for those topics most of interest to you. The topic for each week’s discussion is given below. All attendees receive an electronic copy of the Faithful Voter Reflection Guide from Interfaith Power & Light\, plus supplemental materials provided by the facilitator. Register on www.eventbrite.com. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \nSept. 13: Protecting Our Sacred Earth                    Sept. 20: Protecting Democracy & Voting Rights \nSept. 27: Loving Our Immigrant Neighbors           Oct. 4: Building an Economy of Inclusion \nOct. 11: Pursuing Restorative & Racial Justice      Oct. 18: Respecting the Dignity of LGBTQ People \nOct. 25: Protecting Everyone’s Health                   Nov. 1: Creating a More Peaceful World

SUMMARY:Refuse Fascism Mass Meeting-#OutNow Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us in planning how to build enough people to “take to the streets” to fight this Trump/Pence Fascist regime. \nWe can no longer tolerate the constant attacks on our Constitution\, the consistent pardons of war criminals\, flagrant incarceration of immigrants and asylum seekers. What kind of person have I become if I continue to sit and wait for an election to determine IF my nation’s people have civil rights or not. \nJoin us as we plan our nonviolent yet aggressive plans to demonstrate what kind of government we want and we deserve as human beings. \nThe world is watching us. We will not be silenced. We will not live in shame or acquiesce to Fascism’s unfolding. Fascism is unfolding at an alarming rate. Check out the pointedly detailed articles on the RefuseFascism.org site. \n  \nSunday\, February 23 at 1:00 pm. SUMMARY:On Coal River Film Screening and Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 3rd\, 7PM @ Rice Cinema\n\n\n\n\nThe Ethnographic Film Society is proud to present a public screening of “On Coal River”\, a documentary about environmental justice in coal country Appalachia. The screening is free and open to the public. A 5$ donations at the door to support Coal River Mountain Watch\, one of the activist organization prominently featured in the film\, are greatly appreciated.\n\nFor more information see our Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/118627328680500/\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoal River Valley\, West Virginia is a community surrounded by lush mountains and a looming toxic threat. ON COAL RIVER follows a former miner and his neighbors in a David-and-Goliath struggle for the future of their valley\, their children\, and life as they know it.\n\nEd Wiley once worked at the same coal waste facility that now threatens his granddaughter’s elementary school. When his local government refuses to act\, Ed embarks on a quest to have the school relocated to safer ground.  With insider knowledge and a sharp sense of right and wrong\, Ed confronts his local school board\, the state government\, and a notorious coal company — Massey Energy — for putting his granddaughter and his community at risk.\n\nAlong the way\, Ed is supported by his neighbors Bo and Judy\, who have their own problems with the coal company.  Ex-marine Bo Webb retired to his childhood home only to discover that this once-idyllic valley is being transformed by the practice of “mountaintop removal” – blowing up mountains to extract coal.  Bo’s neighbor Judy Bonds was forced to leave her ancestral home when the same company opened a mine next door – sending dangerous black water down the creek where her grandson played.  Together\, Bo and Judy help Ed bring attention to the dangers at Marsh Fork Elementary\, hoping that if they save the school\, they can save the valley.\n\nAcross the river\, Maria Lambert recognizes a pattern in the unusual health problems plaguing her community.  Following intuition\, and what she describes as a mission from above\, Maria gathers evidence suggesting that nearby coal companies have contaminated her neighborhood’s water supply.\n\nShot over a five-year period\, ON COAL RIVER follows the transformation of these four remarkable individuals as they fight for the valley they love — and for future generations.
