SUMMARY:Two Houston Quakers Visit Israel / Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Two Quakers have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston went with an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news. He thinks that the images from the trip will speak for themselves. \nBridget and Alex will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region.

SUMMARY:Investigating Russia 2017 Natalie M. Smith PH.D
DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation.\n\nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

SUMMARY:On The Beach (1959 Movie)
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama film from United Artists\, produced and directed by Stanley Kramer\, that stars Gregory Peck\, Ava Gardner\, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.[2] This black-and-white film is based on Nevil Shute‘s 1957 novel of the same name depicting the aftermath of a nuclear war.[3] Unlike the novel\, no blame is placed on whoever started the war; it is hinted in the film that the threat of annihilation may have arisen from an accident or misjudgment. \nIn early 1964\, in the months following World War III\, the conflict has devastated the Northern Hemisphere\, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout\, killing all life there. Air currents are slowly carrying the fallout south; the only areas still habitable are in the far reaches of the Southern Hemisphere. \nFrom Australia\, survivors detect an incomprehensible Morse code signal coming from the West Coast of the United States. The last American nuclear submarine\, USS Sawfish\, under Royal Australian Navy command\, is ordered to sail north to the United States to attempt to make contact with the sender of the Morse signal. The submarine is commanded by Captain Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck)\, who must leave his new friend\, the alcoholic Moira Davidson (Ava Gardner). \nThe Australian government arranges for its citizens to receive suicide pills or prepared injections so they may end things quickly before there is prolonged suffering from radiation sickness. An Australian naval officer\, Peter Holmes (Anthony Perkins) and his wife\, Mary\, who is in denial about the impending disaster\, have a baby daughter. Assigned to travel with the American sub for several weeks\, Peter tries to explain to Mary how to euthanize their baby and then kill herself in case he is not yet home when the end comes; Mary reacts very emotionally to the prospect of killing her daughter and herself. \nOne scientist’s theory is that the radiation level near the Arctic Ocean could be lower than that found in the mid-Northern Hemisphere\, which might indicate the radiation could disperse before reaching the Southern Hemisphere. The theory is to be explored along with the submarine’s main mission. After sailing to Point Barrow\, Alaska\, they determine that radiation levels are\, on the contrary\, intensifying. \nThis is a long film and will be shown in two parts with a meal between \nPart I  3 pm – 4:15 PM \nMeal Break 4;15- 5:15 \nPart II  5:15-6:30

SUMMARY:John Pilger's The coming war on China
DESCRIPTION:  \nIT’S no secret that Beijing has been building up its military might in the South China Sea. \nBut there’s another superpower making an even bigger play to stay top dog and many of us wouldn’t event realize. The United States has surrounded China with 400 military bases in an almost perfect “noose”. \n  \nIn a new documentary set to air on Sunday night\, The Coming war on China\, award-winning journalist and filmmaker John Pilger challenges the notion of the world’s newest\, biggest trading nation as an enemy.  He also reveals the build-up to war taking place right on Beijing’s doorstep. \nFilmed over two years in the Marshall Islands\, Japan\, Korea\, China and the US\, Pilger highlights America’s secret history in the region. \n  \nThe eye-opening documentary reveals some surprising findings including that the people of the Marshall Islands were used as nuclear guinea pigs under the top secret “Project 4.1”. \nPilger also travels to Japan and Korea where he speaks to and observes people resisting the US expansion. \n  \nHe visits the Japanese island of Okinawa where 32 US bases are located and speaks to those who are challenging the world’s biggest military power. \nOn the Korean island of Jeju\, a world heritage site\, he witnesses farmers\, villagers\, priests and supporters who block gates to a base only to be removed every day. \nIn an interview with news.com.au ahead of the film going to air\, Pilger said he wanted to “help people make sense of a critical subject that is seldom more than a series of sound-bites.” \n“I say critical\, because a strange and dangerous atmosphere currently separates the world’s greatest military power\, the United States\, and a country that will almost certainly become the world’s greatest economic power\, China\,” he said. \n  \n“In the past few years\, the provocations\, threats\, contradictions and confusion have caused the kind of mistrust that make war by misunderstanding or by mistake or accident a real possibility. And both the US and China are nuclear-armed.” \nPilger also raises questions over whether it’s Beijing we should really be worried about. \n“China is surrounded by 400 US military bases in what one strategist describes as a ‘noose’\,” he said. \n“Many of these bases are on China’s doorstep\, armed with missiles\, naval battle groups\, nuclear bombers\, drones. US naval warships patrol just outside Chinese waters.” \nWhile the US has almost 1000 foreign bases\, China has just one which Pilger said was smaller and did not threaten California. \n  \n  \n“ \n

SUMMARY:Meet filmmaker Regis Tremblay 11:59:30-Thirty Seconds to Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Reception with  Regis Tremblay \nMy new documentary\, Thirty Seconds to Midnight\, is ready and we will show it in Houston\, TX \nThis has been a very long\, three year project that began with my first feature documentary\, The Ghosts of Jeju. It was then that I realized the U.S. plan for full spectrum dominance of the planet. My research and interest since then has focused on the trajectory of Manifest Destiny since the white\, European explorers came to the Americas in the 15th Century. Blessed by the Pope of Rome\, the Doctrine of Discovery gave the illegal immigrants from Europe the right to the land and its resources and permission to kill all of the savages that inhabited those lands. From that time on\, these white\, European\, illegal immigrants\, and later the newly formed United States of America\, continued to massacre millions of Native Americans. Those that were not killed either died of disease\, starvation or were herded onto reservations where they lived in squalor. As the film makes clear\, violence and killing have been part of the American narrative from the very beginning. \nThe United States of America was built on slavery and later the commodification of labor. Eventually\, the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny were applied to the entire world. Since 1798\, the United States has invaded more than 500 countries and murdered tens of millions of innocent people\, stealing their resources and destroying entire civilizations. Just since WWII\, the United States has planned and orchestrated coups\, assassinations\, regime changes\, color revolutions\, drone killings\, and murdered more than 20 million innocent men\, women and children. And the slaughter continues today in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Iraq\, Libya\, Syria\, Yemen\, Somalia and throughout Africa and South America. \nWith the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, America ushered in a new era in human history that has all life on earth on the brink of extinction\, and this is the theme of Thirty Seconds to Midnight. There are only three threats to life on the planet\, and only three. They are\, a nuclear holocaust\, nuclear power that is not safe\, and climate change. As Dr. Helen Caldicott says in the film\, “We are like lemmings walking towards the cliff and worrying about things that don’t matter.” \nSince going to Jeju Island\, I have returned to the Pacific to document the presence and effects of U.S. militarism from Hawaii all the way down to the Marshall Islands. In this past year\, I travelled to Germany\, Ukraine and to Russia because not only is America threatening to choke off China with the Pivot to Asia\, but America has also been threatening Russia since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union with thousands of US/NATO troops\, bases and missiles on Russia’s borders. The threat of nuclear war with these two nuclear-armed countries is greater now than during the Cold War. \nAnd so it is\, America’s destiny has all life on the planet on the very brink of extinction. As Dr. Caldicott wonders at the end of the film\, “Are we an evolutionary aberration designed in an evolutionary sense not to survive? I wonder.”

SUMMARY:Winning The Peace
DESCRIPTION:Winning the Peace is a national leafleting campaign. \nNNOMY is working with War Resisters League to distribute palm cards at high schools that will direct youth to online resources that they can access on their mobile devices. This information and additional links will assist them in answering the questions they will have about the realities of military enlistment that they will not hear from military recruiters\, and direct them to non-military alternatives to achieve their future educational and career goals. \nIf we stay on message and return to our adopted schools every school year\, we will have an impact by engaging our schools\, families and youth in a deeper discussion about what it means to be in the military during this time of unending conflicts. \nThis moment has never been more important\, with increasing Pentagon programs in primary\, middle and secondary schools\, to ask young people to question the normalization of our wars and the risks and impacts that military enlistment can have on their lives and those around them. \nPlease talk with your group and decide to join in a national intervention to reach young people before they are directed into future violent conflicts.

SUMMARY:PEACEMAKER: From Guns to Garden Tools
DESCRIPTION:Join RAWtools\, The Peace Pastor Marty Troyer\, Texas Gun Sense and others on Friday\, March 10th at 6:45pm as we turn guns into garden tools and learn of a 3rd way of addressing gun violence. \nRAWtools\, Inc. gets its scriptural motivation from Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3. We want to be comprehensive in our efforts to move our communities away from gun violence and violence as a whole. Its not enough to just make a lot of tools from guns. We need to help teach each other new ways to solve our problems through relationship\, dialogue\, and alternative means of justice\, i.e. Restorative Justice practices and victim-offender dialogue. \nOur nation has been through a variety of horrific events surrounding gun violence and it has brought the conversation to the forefront of our current events and “water cooler” conversations. It has largely become a binary conversation of either more guns or more laws. RAWtools wants to open a new option\, a third way. What if we made a commitment to solve our problems without guns and violence? You can find statistics to support more laws to keep guns off the streets. You can find statistics to support adding more guns to deter bad things from happening. In either case\, people are afraid of guns. \nBy using weapons to make garden tools and other hand tools\, we are creating a symbol for change and we’re asking you to participate. We are asking our communities to dare to use our imaginations to change our impulse. Beating swords into plowshares\, spears into pruning hooks\, and guns into garden tools creates a dynamic shift in our investment in time and resources. If we are no longer training for war\, what else would we be doing? It doesn’t mean we are all to become gardeners\, but it does mean we can invest in providing life sustaining resources for our communities. \nRAWtools: www.rawtools.org\nMarty Troyer: http://blog.chron.com/thepeacepastor/\nTexas Gun Sense: www.txgunsense.org

This year on Sunday\, February 19\, “We the People Connect the Dots” march against tyranny and ongoing attacks on social justice and civil rights. \nInstead of honoring our current President on this holiday\, we honor the American people and the values that hundreds of thousands of us are fighting for. We are democracy. We are patriots. We are America.” states the membership of Indivisible Houston. \nThe March will begin at 3:00 PM with speakers from diverse advocacy groups united by those interconnected issues and articulating true American values. \nThe march will stop at various locations that represent the different levels of government and how they impact seemingly disparate communities. \nSince inauguration\, communities across the United States have sprung into action. With protests at airports like IAH turning the tide in American opinion against policies such as the Muslim ban\, the true numbers of the resistance are making themselves heard. Now is the time to protect the rights\, safety\, and health of Houstonians and all Americans at the local\, state\, and federal level. Marginalized groups are under fire and respected American institutions on the chopping block. Average citizens at the grassroots level are who will save this country. \nResist\,\nIndivisible Houston

SUMMARY:Love Thy Neighbor Rally in Clear Lake!
DESCRIPTION:Residents from across the southern suburbs of Houston will be publicly showing our support for our Muslim neighbors and for refugees and immigrants from predominately Muslim countries. Recent efforts to restrict immigration\, turn away refugees\, and incidents of anti-Muslim violence and harassment make this an important time for us all to come together and let our voices of respect and compassion be heard. \n  \nOn Friday February 17 at 1:00pm\, the Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church in Clear Lake will be welcoming all of our neighbors from every religious tradition\, culture and background to gather for a HUGE rally to demonstrate our support for the members of the Clear Lake Islamic Center\, their families\, and their friends as they arrive for their weekly Friday worship. We’ll gather along the private road (Beacon Street) which leads from El Camino Real to the Islamic Center with signs of support for Muslims and for immigrants and refugees in Houston\, across America and around the world. \nWe invite you to join us in this local\, passionate and positive event! This rally will be non-partisan and is aimed at expressing of our shared values of inclusion\, compassion and respect for diversity in these challenging and difficult times. It is not a protest but a celebration of the gifts of unity and community. We’ll be rallying and then enjoying snacks and refreshments together with our Muslim friends. \n  \nThe Rally will take place on Friday February 17 starting at 1:00 at 17503 El Camino Real in Clear Lake (near the big blue water tower off of El Camino Real\, just south of Bay Area Boulevard and just north of NASA Road 1). For more information or directions\, please visit www.bauuc.org or call \n281-488-2001. \n  \nCome\, bring your friends\, bring your positive signs of support and love for our neighbors\, and help us make a joyful noise as we stand on the side of love together! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:"The Joy" a play about Mary Dyer
DESCRIPTION:Renowned actor-playwright\, Jeanmarie (Simpson) Bishop performs her Houston debut of “The Joy”\, a play about pre-First Amendment martyr\, Mary Dyer.\n– The performance is Pay-What-You-Can\, plus bring toiletries for us to make toiltetry packets for Health Care for the Homeless.\n– The performance will be followed by a discussion and pot luck dinner. \nThe author-performer says of her subject\, “The American First Amendment had everything to do with Mary Dyer being hanged more than a century before it was drafted. Speaking very personally\, her life – the choices she made\, the way she kept going – has helped me find the ambition to get up many a morning when all I wanted was to crawl under the covers and stay there. M…y insight\, more a revelation\, is that choices make us whole. We are powerful when we choose things\, as opposed to having them thrust upon us and being forced to accept them. Even hard things\, even being executed\, when it’s our choice\, is a liberation. I think about that every day now\, and it’s a gift Mary gave to me.” \nKnown for her performance portraits of fierce\, historical women\, Bishop has distinguished herself among her peers in the entertainment industry. \nThe late\, great Leonard Nimoy simply called her “brilliant.” Actor Judd Nelson said\, “Ultimately\, I believe Jeanmarie to be one of humanity’s invaluable resources.” Humorist Dylan Brody said\, “She is a terrific writer\, a riveting performer and an artistic activist of the sort all too rarely seen in America today\,” and superstar Joni Mitchell called her “a dedicated artist and remarkable woman.” \nhttp://marybarrettdyer.blogspot.com/2011/12/top-10-things-you-may-not-know-about.html
