SUMMARY:Film: Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis \nIntroduced by filmmaker Kathleen Dowdey \n\n\n\n\n\nFree admission \nA panel discussion follows the screening \nIn 1965\, the historic Selma March known as Bloody Sunday was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. John Lewis—now a U.S. Congressman\, then a young student—co-led hundreds of peaceful marchers seeking voting rights for African Americans in the South. When they came face to face with a wall of Alabama state troopers\, Lewis took a steadfast\, nonviolent stand and encouraged his followers to do the same. Seventy-six-year-old Lewis is a respected legislator and elder statesman who continues to practice nonviolence in his determined fight for justice. The film is a riveting portrayal of Lewis’s personal journey of courage\, searing disappointments\, and hard-won triumphs. Over the decades—including on the House floor this past June—he inspires others to “get in the way.” \nAbout the Speaker\nKathleen Dowdey’s unique portrayal of documentary subjects is a refreshing fusion of personalized voice\, layered observations and revelatory moments. She is a storyteller and award-winning filmmakter attracted to people deeply immersed in their cultures\, driven by their history\, thrust into change and struggling to adapt. Her exceptional artistry in Get in the Way has its roots in her early work\, including A Celtic Trilogy\, a documentary exploration of the renaissance of identity in the Celtic nations\, Blue Heaven a narrative feature that exposes the hidden traumas of domestic violence and Dawn’s Early Light\, a portrait of newspaper editor Ralph McGill\, a segregationist-turned-advocate of tolerance in a deeply polarized South. As a television writer\, director and producer\, Dowdey’s work is broadcast on networks including CBS/Paramount\, NBC\, PBS\, the History Channel\, Discovery\, Turner Broadcasting and others. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America\, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the International Documentary Association.

SUMMARY:Film: Sonita
DESCRIPTION:Sonita \n\n\n\n\n\nWinning two awards at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival\, Sonita tells the inspiring story of Sonita Alizadeh\, an 18-year-old Afghan refugee in Iran\, who thinks of Michael Jackson and Rihanna as her spiritual parents and dreams of becoming a big-name rapper. Currently her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran shelter\, but her family has a very different future planned for Sonita: as a bride worth $9\,000. Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami poignantly shifts from observer to participant altering expectations\, as Sonita’s story unfolds. An unforgettable coming-of-age tale that positions a free-spirited young woman at odds with the restrictions of a traditional society.

SUMMARY:Presentation on Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Activism Against the Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta\, a Quaker Jewish activist and writer from Burnaby\, B.C.\, Canada will be in Houston to speak and do a presentation on nonviolence in Palestine.  She will share information about nonviolent activism by Palestinians and Israelis\, separately and together\, in challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land–as this is a much under-publicized aspect of the Palestinian struggle–as well as ways in which “Internationals” can support these efforts. \nShe will also introduce her book: “Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation”.  The book is an interview-based study that presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence\, the vast majority either Palestinian or Israeli\, as they reflect on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations toward the occupation. \nMore info at http://refusingtobeenemiesthebook.wordpress.com \nCopies of Refusing to be Enemies will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:Roy Zimmerman Concert - Potluck - Fundraiser for Peace Camp Houston
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do about climate change\, torture\, racism\, gun violence\, fracking\, Congressional ineptitude\, ignorance\, war and greed?  Write funny songs\, says Roy Zimmerman \, master satirist\, songwriter\, and performer. \nHPJC is bringing Roy Zimmerman back to Houston in a benefit to raise funds for Peace Camp Houston. In 14 albums over 20 years\, Roy has brought the sting of satire and parody to the struggle for peace and social justice. \nRoy says\, “I’m calling the election year tour “This Machine\,” a reference to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to be sure\, but also an acknowledgement that songwriting does good work in the world.  Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression\, because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face\, I’m affirming the real possibility of change.” \nHe makes fun of right wing politicians\, hypocrites\, war profiteers\, large multinational corporations\, religious bigots\, and hate-mongers\, while entertaining you with stories and music. \nHis songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared stages with Bill Maher\, John Oliver\, Ellen DeGeneres\, Kate Clinton and George Carlin.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post. \nHe’s funny\, he’s a great musician\, he’s an excellent performer\, and his in-person performances are outstanding.  What more could you ask for? \nThe concert starts at 7:30 pm\, but there’s also an optional pot luck dinner at 6:30 pm — bring some food or drink to share\, if you wish. \nVisit Roy’s web site and check out his music on YouTube for more information about him and his music. \nRoy Zimmerman on YouTube:\n\n“The Big Republican Tent“\n“My Vote\, My Voice\, My Right“\n“To Be a Liberal“\n“Creation Science 101”\n“Hope\, Struggle and Change”\n“The Faucet’s on Fire!”\n“SCROTUS”\n\nReserve your discount seats now!\nWe’re asking for a contribution of $20 at the door\, or $15 in advance\, but if that’s too much for you\, please let us know. Reserve your tickets today! \nWe’ll also collect additional donations just for this summer’s Peace Camp Houston\, for those who can give more.  We hope to add additional weeks of peace camp\, at different locations\, and provide subsidies for more children of lower income families – it all depends on how much funds we can raise. \nIf you can’t come\, but would like to help us pay expenses so more children can attend peace camp\, go to the Peace Camp Houston donation form. \nRoy usually brings CD’s to sell for those who want more of his music.  (Generally many people do!) \nFor more information about Roy and his music\, go to http://www.royzimmerman.com or search for “Roy Zimmerman” on YouTube.
