SUMMARY:On Belonging: A Multidisciplinary Performance by Sehba Sarwar
DESCRIPTION:On Belonging is a performance by writer/artist Sehba Sarwar\, whose work contends with issues of displacement and identity. Born and raised in Karachi\, Pakistan\, Sarwar grounds her work in her home city even as she moves between Houston\, Los Angeles\, and Karachi. Sarwar will perform new writings and launch a site-specific installation containing community responses to the question of belonging. The performance/installation will be held by the oak tree near the Cy Twombly Gallery on the Menil Collection campus. Sehba’s performance tackles critical issues at a time when walls are being raised and border crossings are being restricted.

SUMMARY:Art and Incarceration: Poetry\, Theatre and Music in and about Captivity
DESCRIPTION:Concert\, Ensemble Pi\nFor this interdisciplinary performance\, Ensemble Pi presents music\, text\, and theater works that focus on the rise of mass incarceration\, the racial disparities it reveals\, and the emotional toll it takes on inmates and their families. The concert opens with Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece\, Coming Together\, composed in the wake of the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York and powerfully expressing the frustration of life behind bars and anger about injustice. The evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Rikers Islandby New York composer Eleanor Cory\, inspired by the anthology These Are Hard Times for Dreamers. Joseph Assadourian\, the narrator for Coming Together\, will also perform an excerpt from his tragi-comic play\, The Bullpen\, based on his own incarceration. The performance closes with the sublime Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time (1941)\, composed and performed in the prisoner-of-war camp in Gorlitz\, Germany\, capturing the hardship and sadness of being in prison\, while still conveying optimism. \nAbout the presenters:\nEnsemble Pi is a new music collective that uniquely connects pressing social and political issues and the idioms of classical contemporary music. We began our Peace Concerts series 10 years ago in response to the invasion of Iraq\, and have since presented annual chamber music concerts giving voice to the struggle for peace. Every concert includes at least one commission\, as well as contemporary classical masterpieces to address the historical tradition of “socially conscious” compositions. In the past\, we’ve collaborated with visual artists\, writers\, journalists and actors – including South African artist William Kentridge and American journalists Naomi Wolf and Jeremy Scahill – and have featured the music of John Harbison\, Frederic Rzewski\, Shostakovich and Penderecki. Our series has voiced protest against the Iraqi invasion\, but also the censorship of media\, fracking\, the Apartheid\, and more. Performers include: Alexis Gerlach\, cello; Moran Katz\, clarinet; Idith Meshulam Korman\, piano; Airi Yoshioka\, violin; and Joseph Assadourian\, actor and narrator.

SUMMARY:13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Cardoza\, an afro-indigenous feminist leader from Honduras\, is coming to Houston on May 22\, together with Honduran singer-songwriter Karla Lara\, as part of a tour of the U.S. promoting the new bilingual Spanish-English edition of Melissa’s book\, 13 colores de la resistencia hondureña / 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance. \nThe book tells the stories of several women who were involved in the massive movement of resistance that arose after the coup d’état that took place in Honduras in 2009. The coup unleashed conditions of greatly increased corruption and impunity. The violence and harms stemming from this have not diminished to this day. \nAlicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter Network comments: \n<<13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. These stories of bravery\, of struggle and pain\, and ultimately of a resilience rooted in a love for freedom will grip your heart. Cardoza is brilliant in storytelling\, and ensures that\, in memory of our sister Berta Cáceres\, feminisms are three dimensional and span multiple experiences—trans\, Black\, elderly\, and more. The lessons contained in these stories offer important reflections for all revolutionaries.>> \nThe book’s English translator\, Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle writes: \n<<Melissa calls those the times “when protests were poetry in the streets.” Few people could better turn that poetry in the streets into prose on the page than she. A fearless journalist in the most dangerous country in the world for a reporter\, a lesbian in a land where LGBT people regularly turn up as cadavers in the streets\, an activist in a place where the faces of the disappeared line countless walls\, an afro-indigenous woman in a region where racism continues to take a deadly toll\, Melissa is a writer who knows the meaning of resistance.>> \nAt the event\, Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara will perform stories from the book using a mixed-media format of storytelling\, acting and song. That will be followed by discussion about the situation in Honduras\, Berta Cáceres\, her legacy and #JusticeforBerta campaign\, and transnational movement-connections. \nBoth were close friends of the late Berta Cáceres\, who was assassinated a year ago\, and led COPINH (http://copinhenglish.blogspot.com/)\, a resistance movement of the indigenous Lenca people of western Honduras that has stopped dams\, mines\, and other destructive “projects of death” as Berta called them. \nRelated links: \nTour info: http://ggjalliance.org/book-tour-2017-13-colors-honduran-resistance \nA poetic and musical presentation by Melissa Cardoza (in Spanish):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruEmqjnZhKE \nPlease come and invite your friends to join in this unique experience!

SUMMARY:Roy Zimmerman Concert - Potluck- Fundraiser for Peace Camp Houston
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do about climate change\, torture\, racism\, xenophobia\, gun violence\, fracking\, Congressional ineptitude\, ignorance\, war and greed?  Write funny songs\, says Roy Zimmerman \, master satirist\, songwriter\, and performer. \nHPJC is bringing Roy Zimmerman back to Houston in a benefit to raise funds for Peace Camp Houston. \n“ReZist” is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman’s hilarious\, rhyme-intensive original songs. \n“Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression\,” says Roy\, “because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face\, I’m affirming the real possibility for change.” \nRoy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared stages with Bill Maher\, Robin Williams\, Ellen DeGeneres\, John Oliver\, Kate Clinton and George Carlin.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post. \nHe’s funny\, he’s a great musician\, he’s an excellent performer\, and his in-person performances are outstanding.  What more could you ask for? \nThe concert starts at 7:30 pm\, but there’s also an optional pot luck dinner at 6:30 pm — bring some food or drink to share\, if you wish. \nVisit Roy’s web site and check out his music on YouTube for more information about him and his music. If you can’t come\, but would like to help us pay expenses so more children can attend peace camp\, go to the Peace Camp Houston donation form. \nReserve your discount seats now!\nWe’re asking for a contribution of $20 at the door\, or $15 in advance\, but if that’s too much for you\, please let us know. \n\nIf you’d like to purchase tickets with a check\, make it payable to “Houston Peace and Justice Center”\, and indicate “Roy Zimmerman” on the memo line. Please also send us your email so we can add to our updates list! Mail it to HPJC\, PO Box 66234\, Houston TX 77266-6234.  Mail early so that we’ll receive the checks by March 8.\nUse the form below to purchase your tickets online!\n\nWe’ll also collect additional donations just for this summer’s Peace Camp Houston\, for those who can give more.  We hope to add more weeks of peace camp\, at different locations\, and provide subsidies for more children of lower income families – it all depends on how much funds we can raise. Please give generously!

SUMMARY:PEACEMAKER: From Guns to Garden Tools
DESCRIPTION:Join RAWtools\, The Peace Pastor Marty Troyer\, Texas Gun Sense and others on Friday\, March 10th at 6:45pm as we turn guns into garden tools and learn of a 3rd way of addressing gun violence. \nRAWtools\, Inc. gets its scriptural motivation from Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3. We want to be comprehensive in our efforts to move our communities away from gun violence and violence as a whole. Its not enough to just make a lot of tools from guns. We need to help teach each other new ways to solve our problems through relationship\, dialogue\, and alternative means of justice\, i.e. Restorative Justice practices and victim-offender dialogue. \nOur nation has been through a variety of horrific events surrounding gun violence and it has brought the conversation to the forefront of our current events and “water cooler” conversations. It has largely become a binary conversation of either more guns or more laws. RAWtools wants to open a new option\, a third way. What if we made a commitment to solve our problems without guns and violence? You can find statistics to support more laws to keep guns off the streets. You can find statistics to support adding more guns to deter bad things from happening. In either case\, people are afraid of guns. \nBy using weapons to make garden tools and other hand tools\, we are creating a symbol for change and we’re asking you to participate. We are asking our communities to dare to use our imaginations to change our impulse. Beating swords into plowshares\, spears into pruning hooks\, and guns into garden tools creates a dynamic shift in our investment in time and resources. If we are no longer training for war\, what else would we be doing? It doesn’t mean we are all to become gardeners\, but it does mean we can invest in providing life sustaining resources for our communities. \nRAWtools: www.rawtools.org\nMarty Troyer: http://blog.chron.com/thepeacepastor/\nTexas Gun Sense: www.txgunsense.org

SUMMARY:House Concert w/ Rainbow Girls in KPFT backyard
DESCRIPTION:We’ll have a keg of home brew and kombucha\, some blankets on the grass and an intimate\, bluesy show by the Rainbow Girls – three of my best friends from Bodega Bay\, CA\, stopping through on their south coast house concert tour. We’ll be taking donations and all donations will BENEFIT Houston Stands with Standing Rock. Much thanks to KPFT for hosting us in their awesome backyard! Bring friendly folks\, children are welcome 🙂 \n7 PM – Drinks\, hang out\n8 PM – MUSIC WILL START AT 8 PM \nHere’s some info:\nhttps://www.rainbowgirlsmusic.com/\nemail: rainbowgirlsmusic@gmail.com\ninstagram: rainbowgirlsstomp\ntwitter: @rainbowgirrs \nRainbow Girls is a collaborative of songwriters\, multi-instrumentalists\, vocalists\, and California natives who’ve spent the last 4 years touring Europe and the US as a rock n’ roll band\, but who’ve recently returned to their folkier roots by embarking on a house concert tour across America. This trio version of the band (Eric Chapin\, Caitlin Gowdy and Vanessa May) highlights their rich harmonies\, ageless songwriting\, and soulful\, bluesy sound at it’s rawest form. \nThe ladies came together at an underground open mic in Santa Barbara\, CA in 2010 and since then have released two studio albums\, toured the US and Europe extensively\, and simultaneously developed two different forms of performing: 1) An electric\, rock n’ roll\, foot-stomping spectacular\, enticing people to let loose\, get naked and dance wildly; And 2) An intimate and acoustic set based around their unique harmonies and folkier roots. \nThese are some of my best friends from my earliest days in California and I’m so happy to be able to share them with you. This will also be one of my last hurrahs in Houston for a while so I hope to see you there! \n90.1 FM KPFT Houston \n419 Lovett Blvd\, Houston\, Texas 77006

SUMMARY:"The Joy" a play about Mary Dyer
DESCRIPTION:Renowned actor-playwright\, Jeanmarie (Simpson) Bishop performs her Houston debut of “The Joy”\, a play about pre-First Amendment martyr\, Mary Dyer.\n– The performance is Pay-What-You-Can\, plus bring toiletries for us to make toiltetry packets for Health Care for the Homeless.\n– The performance will be followed by a discussion and pot luck dinner. \nThe author-performer says of her subject\, “The American First Amendment had everything to do with Mary Dyer being hanged more than a century before it was drafted. Speaking very personally\, her life – the choices she made\, the way she kept going – has helped me find the ambition to get up many a morning when all I wanted was to crawl under the covers and stay there. M…y insight\, more a revelation\, is that choices make us whole. We are powerful when we choose things\, as opposed to having them thrust upon us and being forced to accept them. Even hard things\, even being executed\, when it’s our choice\, is a liberation. I think about that every day now\, and it’s a gift Mary gave to me.” \nKnown for her performance portraits of fierce\, historical women\, Bishop has distinguished herself among her peers in the entertainment industry. \nThe late\, great Leonard Nimoy simply called her “brilliant.” Actor Judd Nelson said\, “Ultimately\, I believe Jeanmarie to be one of humanity’s invaluable resources.” Humorist Dylan Brody said\, “She is a terrific writer\, a riveting performer and an artistic activist of the sort all too rarely seen in America today\,” and superstar Joni Mitchell called her “a dedicated artist and remarkable woman.” \nhttp://marybarrettdyer.blogspot.com/2011/12/top-10-things-you-may-not-know-about.html

SUMMARY:Progress Theatre's THE BURNIN'
DESCRIPTION:THE BURNIN’ is an a’capella musical–or NeoSpiritual–fusing styles from The Blues and Jazz to Spoken Word and Hip Hop\, inspired by the 1940 Rhythm Club Fire of Natchez\, MS and the 2003 E2 Club Stampede of Chicago\, IL. Following a group of clubgoers before\, during and after two reimagined U.S. club tragedies\, THE BURNIN’ straddles time to explore personal and communal definitions of freedom\, survival and identity during times of change. \nSYNOPSIS: It’s 1940 in the fictional City of Antebellum. As the African American community prepares for the return of hometown hero Band Man to the local juke\, the White community organizes it’s Annual Pilgrimage Pageant; a celebration of Southern hierarchy as it was “Before the War.” Fast forward 85 years and post-Great Migration urban residents of Sittay gather to critique the policies and politics behind contemporary headlines at a local hip hop spot. When disaster strikes in both spaces\, the clubgoers are forced to examine intersections of race\, gender\, trauma\, agency\, history\, legacy and uncertain futures in the blink of an eye. \nSHOWTIMES: \n\nFridays\, September 9 & 16 @ 7pm\nSaturdays\, September 10 & 17 @ 7pm\nSundays\, September 11 & 18 @ 3pm\n\nTICKETS: $20 (general); $15 (students) \nWritten and Directed by Cristal Chanelle Truscott \nMusic by Heather Christian and Cristal Chanelle Truscott \nPerformed by Progress Theatre\, a touring ensemble using theatre to encourage social consciousness\, cross-community dialogue\, healing and cultural awareness. \nFounded by Houston-native\, HSPVA alumna and Doris Duke Impact Artist Awardee\, Cristal Chanelle Truscott\, Progress Theatre (PT) is unique in offering a brand of a’capella musical theatre that is at once traditional and contemporary\, seamlessly blending academia with pop culture to explore compelling\, honest\, and unflinching ways of approaching questions of humanity\, and the social concerns and insights of our times. As a touring company\, Progress Theatre is excited to bring THE BURNIN’ (touring since 2014) home to its Houston-base and join the community of artists that make the city’s thriving arts scene exciting and diverse. \nDeeply invested in community service\, PT aims to be not only performers/creators of ensemble-driven theatre works\, but also presenters and supporters of fellow artists and collaborators with the communities we engage. The company is also offering a series of free arts and community events during their time at MATCH called “Light Days.” To reverse the theatre terminology of “dark days\,” for when there is no performance or rehearsal in a theatre\, PT’s Light Days hosts local artists and programs in the theatre on days THE BURNIN’ is “dark.” Events include: An Arts Grants & Info Session hosted by the Network of Ensemble Theaters and a film screening of “Porch Stories\,” a documentary by Folklore Films\, detailing life in 3rd Ward through the journeys and wisdom of the community’s “Living Libraries”–the elders. SUMMARY:RFK: A Portrait of Robert F. Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:At Main Street Theater we are currently running 2 plays that have\, sadly\, turned out to be incredibly timely with all that seems to be falling apart in our world: \nRFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy and Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-A** Wit of Molly Ivins.  (The shows run in repertory\, alternating days) through August 14. \n  \n“When we decided to mount these two shows about important individuals in American political life\, we didn’t know just how timely and timeless their stories would be\,” says Main Street Theater Founder and Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden.  “Of course\, anyone who follows Texas Politics knows that nothing has changed since Molly Ivins covered it with such wit and insight during her time with the Texas Observer\, and her commentary is just as sharp and entertaining as ever.  We chose to pair Molly’s story with Bobby Kennedy’s thinking that it would resonate with the current Presidential Election\, little knowing that recent national events would put his thoughts about civil rights into such clear and powerful perspective.  Both these plays – and the individuals who inspired them – are great reminders of the impact of civic passion combined with eloquence and intelligence.” \nAbout RFK: A Portrait of Robert F. Kennedy \nBy late summer\, 1964\, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was a deeply wounded man.  Still in shock and consumed with grief and guilt over the assassination of his older brother\, he was at a critical juncture in his life.  The 1964 presidential election was approaching\, and President Johnson\, who had been dangling the possibility of the vice-presidency to RFK\, finally called Kennedy over to the White House to inform him of his decision.  The result of that meeting and the subsequent direction for the next\, and last\, four years of his life are the focus of RFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy.   “Robert F Kennedy has always been a political hero of mine\,” says actor Joel Sandel who plays the role.  “However\, it wasn’t until I started digging into his personal history\, in preparation for this play\, that I was struck by what a profoundly good man he was.  His very personal rhetoric spoke to the average citizen in a way that touched the very soul of the nation.  He was also one of the rare political figures who had the ability to experience genuine ‘heart changes’ in the way he saw the world and viewed his responsibility as a citizen of the U.S. and of the world.”

SUMMARY:Lidless - a play by Horsehead Production (HPJC co-sponsor)
DESCRIPTION:HORSE HEAD THEATRE CO. PRESENTS THE REGIONAL PREMIERE OF LIDLESS BY FRANCES YA-CHU COWHIG  JUNE 2 – 18\, 2016  THURSDAYS – SATURDAYS @ 8PM + INDUSTRY NIGHT MONDAY\, JUNE 13\, 2016 @ 8PM @ Fresh Arts Gallery\, Winter Street Studios \nIt’s 2019. Alice\, a former Guantanamo Bay interrogator wants to move on with her life. Bashir\, her former detainee can’t let go of the past. And Rhiannon\, Alice’s boldly imaginative daughter is determined to understand what happened between them. Fifteen years after Alice served as an interrogator at Guantánamo Bay\, she has successfully reinvented herself and suppressed all memories of her prior life — mostly through the aid of pharmaceuticals. Now in 2019\, Alice lives contentedly in Minnesota with her loving husband\, Lucas\, teenage daughter Rhiannon\, and lifelong friend Riva — that is until Bashir appears at her florist shop\, confronting Alice with the horrifying reality of her long-forgotten time at Guantánamo. As compensation for the suffering he endured\, Bashir asks Alice to donate part of her liver and save what remains of his life. Meanwhile\, Alice’s daughter Rhiannon relentlessly begins to uncover her mother’s past\, just as Bashir infiltrates their family’s present. LIDLESS explores the conflicting eroticism and brutality of violence amid the domestic fallout of personal trauma. \n
