SUMMARY:A Tilted Guide to Being A Defendant: Book Presentation and Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:From Black Lives Matter to Standing Rock to the resistance against the Trump regime\, thousands of people across the country have faced arrest and prosecution in recent years for their political actions and activity. They find the legal system confusing\, alienating\, and isolating\, and the government is often successful at using criminal charges to disrupt\, destroy\, and neutralize radical and revolutionary struggles for liberation. \nJoin us for this presentation and discussion from the Tilted Scales Collective (tiltedscalescollective.org) to talk about how to leverage your goals and values–personal\, political\, and legal–in your court battle\, and how to leverage your court case to strengthen our revolutionary struggles for liberation. By thinking and acting strategically and being in solidarity with each other\, we can turn these terrible situations in movement-building ones! \nThe event is based on the ideas in the recent book A TILTED GUIDE TO BEING A DEFENDANT\, which draws on the wisdom of dozens of people who have weathered the challenges of trials and incarceration\, including many former and current political prisoners/prisoners of war. This event is part of a nationwide tour aiming to help strengthen our movements on all fronts and take away the power of criminal charges. The book will be available for sale at a dicount at the event! \nChildren are very welcome and Solidarity Houston has a children’s corner with books\, crafts\, and games. \nSolidarity Houston is wheelchair accessible space through the front entrance\, and has one gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathroom (does not have an accessibility bar). The space is not currently scent free. Service animals always welcome\, non-human animal companions are welcome as well. If you have any other accessibility needs or questions\, please email us at houston_abc@riseup.net! \nParking is in the back of the space\, along the train tracks. We recommend you don’t park in the Mi Charro lot\, as they are known to tow people\, but if you need an accessible space to park make sure you don’t park in a marked spot. Bikes can come into the space. The new green line of the metro rail has a stop right in front of the space\, for those using public transportation.

SUMMARY:Russia Observations Fake News
DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation. \nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \n
