DESCRIPTION:Natalie M Smith visited Crimea\, Moscow and St. Petersburg\, Russia\, as a delegate of the Center for Citizen Initiatives in May 2017. She has a Ph.D. in Russian literature and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and has traveled in the Russian Federation since 1995. CCI\, the largest citizen diplomacy organization between the two nations\, determined this year to carry out a first-ever “information-gathering” delegation of American citizen investigators who would travel to major Russian cities to learn what is happening in Russia – since many allegations are made in US mainstream media and few know whether it is truth or misinformation. \n  \nIn Moscow\, CCI delegates met with Mikhail Gorbachev\, ballistics expert Vladimir Kozin\, foreign policy expert Andrei Kortunov\, journalist Dmitri Babich and TV celebrity Vladimir Pozner to discuss areas of US and Russian concern. \n  \nIn Yalta\, Simferopol and Sevastopol city officials\, school children\, Simferopol’s Rotary Club\, university students\, journalists and many others gave perspectives on Crimea’s 2014 referendum and Western sanctions\, extended by the EU to 2018. \n  \nIn St.Petersburg entrepreneurs\, opposition politicians\, and educators shared their hopes for more cooperative work in the future. \n  \n  \nSharon Tennison’s website further describes her work: \nhttps://ccisf.org/ \n  \n  \nThe attached photo is during our meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev:

Join us for books\, workshops\, and discussion to celebrate and expand our southern radical communities of resistance! \nWe welcome proposals for workshops\, panels\, film screenings and the like\, and especially encourage people from Texas\, neighboring states\, and the south and southwest/la frontera generally to submit proposals. But here’s one quick definition! \nAnarchism is a set of revolutionary political ideas which seek a fundamental transformation of society toward expansive visions of individual and social freedom. Within this is a comprehensive critique and rejection of all forms of hierarchy and structured relationships of domination–including the State\, capitalism\, white supremacy\, patriarchy and hetero-sexism–as well as visions of a free society built on human freedom\, equality\, solidarity\, and mutual aid. \nQ: Why a book fair?  \nA: Anarchists around the world have long organized bookfairs as spaces to gather\, share ideas\, and network. In the age of e-readers and digital\, online organizing\, the idea of a bookfair may sound anachronistic. But we believe that much of the power that our political movements have and can build grows out of the relationships we have with one another–as individuals\, organizations\, and communities. And when it comes to building relationships\, there is really no substitute for face to face interaction\, sharing space\, and learning and working together. We hope to facilitate that with the workshops\, presentations\, and discussions that are being planned\, and the space that we create. There will also certainly be plenty of books\, pamphlets\, t-shirts\, and stickers available! As the late Texas-born anarchist Lucy Parsons said\, “Anarchists know that a long period of education must precede any great fundamental change in society\, hence they do not believe in vote begging\, nor political campaigns\, but rather in the development of self-thinking individuals.” \nQ: Why now? \nA: The United States has long been a terrifying landscape for many across the world–a white-supremacist\, settler-colonialist\, capitalist\, hetero-patriarchy. The rise of the Trump regime and the grassroots fascist right has stripped away much of the old window dressing and intensified the myriad attacks on people of color\, women\, poor people\, queer and trans people\, Muslims and Jews\, migrants\, and others. Millions want to begin fighting back or redouble their efforts. \nThose who are newer to the resistance might be looking to get plugged in\, learn new skills\, and sharpen their analysis. Those who have been in the game for a minute might be looking to find new inspiration\, new camaraderie\, new creativity\, and fresh perspective. All of us are looking for ways to move forward together in dark times. Our gatherings are more important now than ever. \nQ: Why Houston? \nA: Texas\, and especially Houston\, has a well-earned reputation for being the epicenter of the U.S. petrochemical industry\, the locus of reactionary political movements that were laughed at until they came to power\, and the home state of several war criminal presidents. Usually thought of as backward or irredeemable rather than hip\, radical\, or enlightened\, the whole region is often overlooked by much of the U.S. left that is concentrated on either coast. \nBut there is–and always has been–resistance here too: from the Black soldiers at Fort Logan who went to war against the police and Jim Crowe in 1917\, to the neighborhood that rebelled in 1977 when the cops who murdered Joe Campos Torres got off with a $1 fine; from hosting the first National Chicana Conference in 1971\, to hosting the National Women’s Conference (and the radical feminist protests outside of it!) in 1977; from direct actions against war profiteer Halliburton and logging company Maxxam in 2004-05 to resistance to the Tar Sands blockade against the Keystone XL pipeline a couple years ago; from the 2003 Radical Encuentro Camp to the 2011 Houston Anarchist Bookfair. Resistance in the belly of the beast has always been strong! \nTrue\, Houston has never had as large of a radical community as some places\, nor as many resources. But we’ve always forged ahead with the utmost spirit\, creativity\, and tenacity. In this tradition\, we are proud to welcome anarchists and other radicals from across the region to the 2017 Houston Anarchist Bookfair!

DESCRIPTION:Sunday Evening Conversations on Creation Continue…  \nChrist the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to attend Sunday Evening Conversations on Creation\, an environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2017 is Connections between People and Nature. \nAt the September web meeting\, we welcome Professor Kerri Crawford\, Assistant Professor of Biology & Biochemistry at the University of Houston. In her presentation\, Dr. Crawford will discuss global threats to biodiversity and why we should care\, including how biodiversity influences natural systems and provides ecosystem services that we rely on.  She will present examples from her own work\, such as experiments that tested how plant diversity influences restoration outcomes in coastal ecosystems and how soil microbes influence plant community diversity.  Finally\, she will speculate on key scientific questions that need to be answered to understand how ecological communities will change in the future and help mitigate the negative consequences of these changes. DESCRIPTION:2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Pre-Program\nDouble jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System\nConversation and Book Signing with Julie Bindel \nWomen of sex trafficking face the dual realities of being victims while also being prosecuted as offenders. Join Julie Bindel in conversation with Houston activists and advocates as they explore this topic from both local and global perspectives. \nIn her most recent book “The Pimping of Prostitution\,” Bindel takes the debate on prostitution legislation head-on\, exposing the lived realities of women in contrast with the dominant discourse in current academic and liberal feminist debates. \nBased on more than 250 interviews with people involved in and affected by prostitution around the world\, Bindel exposes the harms of the global sex trade and documents the emergence of the exciting and vibrant survivor abolitionist movement – leading us to question when the policy makers\, politicians and international human rights organizations will start to reject the mythology around prostitution\, hold sex buyers accountable for the damage that they do\, and truly begin to fight for the human rights of women around the world. \nThis program will be followed by a public reception and book signing on the plaza. \nAbout the presenter:\nA renowned investigative journalist\, Julie Bindel has written extensively on a range of topics including violence against women\, the international surrogacy trade\, mail order brides\, trafficking\, and unsolved murders. She writes regularly for The Guardian\, New Statesman\, The International Business Times\, and The Spectator\, and frequently appears on the BBC and Sky News. She was Visiting Journalist at Brunel University\, UK (2013 – 2014) and is now on the Advisory Board of Byline.com. \nThis program builds upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium and this year’s focus of our biannual Rothko Chapel’s Óscar Romero Award\, which recognizes courageous\, grassroots human rights advocacy. DESCRIPTION:Working as a white ally against racism is hard but not impossible.  One thing that doesn’t help is saying “I don’t see color.”  The failure to see color only benefits white America.  A world without color is a world without racial debt.  \n \nHelp the Center for the Healing of Racism develop better allies by participating in a dialogue about the book Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America by Michael Eric Dyson.  Dr. Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University\, an ordained minister\, author of 20 books\, a writer for The New York Times\, and an editor for both The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated Ebony.\n \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, October 11\, 2017 from noon to 2:00 pm -or- Thursday\, October 12\, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The events will take place at 3412 Crawford Street (corner of Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The events are free and open to the public but registration is required.
