DESCRIPTION:AVP Basic Workshop\nThe Alternaves to Violence Project\nJanuary 12 – 14\, 2018\n\nAVP is dedicated to reducing violence: on the streets\, at work\, in schools\, in homes\, and in relationships everywhere\nAVP provides tools for creative\, nonviolent resolution to conflicts used by peace workers such as Mohandas Gandhi\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Jesus of Nazareth\, and many others\n\nThe Basic AVP Workshop is fun and empowers personal growth—an interactive\, intensive\, \n2½-day experience that hones interpersonal conflict-resolution skills. Experiential exercises\, small groups\, and one-to-one interactions build community and trust around the themes of: \nAffirmation & Self Esteem \nCommunication & Cooperation \nCreative Conflict Resolution \nMission Statement: AVP is an all-volunteer organization offering experiential workshops that empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. Our fundamental belief is that there is a “power for peace” in everyone\, and that this power works through individuals who are open to it to transform violence to nonviolence. AVP builds on a spiritual base of respect and caring for self and others. \nWorkshop Schedule \nFriday Oct. 20 7 PM – 10 PMSaturday Oct. 21 9 AM – 6 PMSunday\, Oct. 22 10 AM – 4 PM \nRegistration Fee: $75.00. There is a sliding scale based on participants’ ability to pay. The fee includes light meals (lunches on Saturday & Sunday). There will be optional vegetarian dishes\, and please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements. \nPlease register now. DESCRIPTION:Sunday Evening Conversations on Creation Continue… \nChrist the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. \nCaring for the Plants that Care for Us \nSunday\, Jan. 28\, at 6 p.m. \nAt the January web meeting\, we welcome Jaime Gonzalez\, Community Conservation Director\, Katy Prairie Conservancy\, who will address Caring for the Plants that Care for Us.  He will discuss the importance of native plants for biodiversity\, water absorption\, carbon sequestration\, the economy\, and creating a sense of place.  He will link the well-being of eco-systems to human well-being. Jaime will also discuss the work of Katy Prairie Conservancy to restore native prairie\, “re-wild” Houston with pocket prairies\, offer citizen conservation opportunities and a new initiative to encourage residents to plant the “nine natives” in their yards. Jaime will give details on using these native plantings on your property\, will provide resources and outlets for getting native plants\, and will even delve into the ethics of saving wildlife by providing native plant habitat. After his talk\, there will be time for Q&A to answer your native plant questions. A generous donor has pledged a donation to the Katy Prairie Conservancy if at least 10 people sign up for and attend Jaime’s talk.
