SUMMARY:Two Houston Quakers Visit Israel / Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Two Quakers have recently returned from an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region. \nTwo Quakers from Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston went with an interfaith delegation to Palestine and Israel. They and twenty-eight other participants from the United States\, Canada and the UK had the unique opportunity to hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis regarding the role of the United States in the pursuit of a just peace. The US government is the most dominant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nBridget Lois Jensen is a second-generation Houstonian with a family history of service to the people of the city. Believing that Houston’s diversity is an asset only if the various communities develop relationships with one another\, she became involved in interfaith and cross-cultural activities with such organizations as Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and the Center for the Healing of Racism. About her trip\, Ms. Jensen says\, “Though peace through political means has been elusive\, I witnessed a visceral hope in the people we met who are living in the midst of the conflict. I saw how their resiliency\, courage\, and commitment to preserving human dignity feed this hope and inspire individuals from various countries who accompany them. I too have been inspired and I want to share their stories and my experience so others will want to join this community of hope.” \nAlex McDonald is an entrepreneur and a Quaker committed to the American values of freedom and equality. Having been a student of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict for many years\, Mr. McDonald is grateful to have had the opportunity to see first-hand the implications of U.S. policies and to be able to separate fact from fiction in what we hear in the news. He thinks that the images from the trip will speak for themselves. \nBridget and Alex will share photos and stories from their experiences after staying with families\, meeting with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and non-governmental organizations and experiencing life on both sides of the separation barrier. \nCome and join us\, experience life today in the area and learn about the struggles and hopes for the region.

SUMMARY:Solarize Houston for Houses of Worship (& Their Members)
DESCRIPTION:The Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston invites you to learn how you and/or your house of worship can go solar for less by leveraging the Solarize Houston program. Solarize Houston is a program of the Houston Renewable Energy Group\, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting renewable energy solutions and businesses. Solarize Houston is a group purchasing program for rooftop solar\, which achieved discounts of 20 percent on rooftop solar purchases for participants when it was held in 2016 & 2017. \nAs people of faith\, one of our missions is to care for this amazing planet on which we co-exist. We have urged our houses of worship to conserve energy\, to recycle\, and to weatherize. We are ready and excited by the next step – bringing renewable energy into play to further reduce our carbon footprint. Learn how we collectively might bring solar to our many places of worship\, as well as our members’ homes and businesses. You may attend this event in person at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church\, 1900 Bering Dr.\, or online\, via web meeting. The speaker\, Dori Wolfe\, is founder of two solar energy companies\, and has worked to bring community solar projects to fruition since 2012. She will explain the details of rooftop solar power generation\, how you/your house of worship may benefit\, and how you/your house of worship can go solar thru the Solarize Houston program. PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) financing will also be covered\, a very attractive financing option for houses of worship & other commercial properties. Please register for this event. \nFor further info\, you can contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Zikaron BaSalon - Memories in the Living Room
DESCRIPTION:Zikaron BaSalon is an annual event\, which takes place on Israeli Holocaust Memorial Day. Zikaron BaSalon started in Israel\, in a living room where a few friends gathered in 2010 and experienced an extraordinary and meaningful event. The idea was born from the understanding that the connection between us and the memories of the Holocaust\, has significantly deteriorated. Today\, the program operates in more than 50 countries around the world. \n  \nAlongside formal events\, Zikaron BaSalon offers a new\, meaningful and intimate way to commemorate this day and address its implications through discussions at home among family\, friends and guests. It is a unique and authentic tradition of people gathering together to open their hearts to the stories of the survivors\, sing\, think\, read\, talk and most importantly- listen. \n  \nZikaron BaSalon happens in the living room space of a home with 15-40 people. The event consists of three parts: testimony\, expression part and open discussion. Light refreshments will be served. \n  \nRead more at http://www.zikaronbasalon.org/ \n  \nJoin us for a meaningful evening of Zikaron BaSalon in Houston! \nYou will be notified closer to the event of your assigned location.

SUMMARY:JED Talks Featuring Author Stephanie Wittels Wachs
DESCRIPTION:Join Emanu El Young Professionals on April 12th for the next installment of our award winning JED Talks series. We are so pleased to be featuring Stephanie Wittels Wachs\, Owner and Executive Director of Rec Room Houston\, actress\, and most recently author of Everything Is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius\, Heroin\, Love\, and Loss. Wachs recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers\, was interviewed on NPR\, and was featured as one of Houstonia magazine’s “10 Women Making it Happen.”\n\n \nCome enjoy dinner (on us!) and drinks as we share in Stephanie’s journey. Dinner will be served at 6:30if you’d like to join us early\, and the program will begin at 7. There is no cost for this event and it will be held at Rec Room Houston\, 100 Jackson St #130c.\n\n \nAbout the book:\nThe space between life and death is a moment.\nBut it will remain alive in me for hundreds of thousands of future moments.\nOne phone call. That’s all it took to change Stephanie Wittels Wachs’ life forever..\nHer younger brother Harris\, a star in the comedy world known for his work on shows like Parks and Recreation\, had died of a heroin overdose. How do you make sense of such a tragic end to a life of so much hilarious brilliance?\nIn beautiful\, unsentimental\, and surprisingly funny prose\, Stephanie Wittels Wachs alternates between her brother’s struggle with addiction\, which she learned about three days before her wedding\, and the first year after his death\, in all its emotional devastation. This compelling portrait of a comedic genius and a profound exploration of the love between siblings is A Year of Magical Thinking for a new generation of readers.\nA heartbreaking but hopeful memoir of addiction\, grief\, and family\, Everything is Horrible and Wonderful will make you laugh\, cry\, and wonder if that possum on the fence is really your brother’s spirit animal.

SUMMARY:Medicare for All Town Hall and Campaign Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:The time has come to stand up and demand full health coverage for everyone in this country! \nAs part of our national strategy\, the Houston DSA chapter will be kicking off their local campaign efforts with a Town Hall event on April 21st at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. You’re invited you to come listen to our great guest speakers\, learn more about the national campaign\, and find out how you can get involved to fight for health justice here in Texas! \nThe event is free and open to all who may be interested in learning more or figuring how they can participate. \nWhat do we mean by Medicare for All? Our national strategy advocates for the following principles: \nA Single Health Program: Everyone will be covered by one health insurance program\, administered by the federal government\, and have equal access to all medical services and treatments. \nComprehensive Coverage: All services requiring a medical professional will be fully covered. You go to the doctor of your choice. Dental\, vision\, mental health\, and pharmaceuticals are all included.\nFree at the point of service: All healthcare costs will be financed through tax contributions based on ability to pay: no copays\, no fees\, no deductibles and no premiums. Ever.\nUniversal Coverage: Coverage for all United States residents –– non-citizens included.\nJobs: A jobs initiative and severance for those affected by the transition to government-run healthcare. \nKey to our local strategy is fighting winnable battles to bring more health justice to those in need. In particular\, we are demanding that Houston must provide Paid Sick Leave benefits to all of its workers\, not just a privileged few. It happened in Austin just recently –– the first city in the South to extend such benefits to all of its residents –– so why can’t it happen here too? \nCome to the Town Hall to learn more about how Austin accomplished this fantastic achievement. We will hear from Ana Gonzalez from Workers Defense Project and members from Austin DSA –– two organizations that were instrumental in the battle. \nWe look forward to seeing you on April 21! Please register now for the Town Hall so you can be a part of a the movement. Let’s build a better world for everyone!

SUMMARY:The Living Library
DESCRIPTION:“Living Books” are members of the community who have volunteered their time and their personal experiences as representatives of different segments of society. One of the great features of the Living Library and checking out a Living Book is that there are no such things as stupid questions. Books have been prepared and made themselves available to you to be able to dig deep and find out what you always wanted to know about the book topic. They are familiar with the topics they represent and are available to discuss that topic with “Readers.”
