SUMMARY:Get to Know the System that Oppresses Us - Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:There is much current attention to social and economic inequality. The Occupy movement did much to highlight the inequality and framed the issues as the 1% versus the 99%. Unfortunately\, the root cause of inequality is kept a deep secret – theft of surplus value created by workers. \nKarl Marx\, considered by current information scientists as the most influential scholar in history\, identified the source of wealth as stolen surplus value. His monumental work is entitled “Capital”. Join us as we go over the Marxist critique of Capitalism. Inequality\, wars\, racism and other social ills will no longer be a mystery. \nIt is not enough to be upset by social and economic inequality. We must understand it and struggle for socialism! This event is open to members and non-members alike. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Arjun Singh Sethi - AMERICAN HATE: SURVIVORS SPEAK OUT
DESCRIPTION:START:\n\nSunday\, September 23\, 2018 – 5:00pm\n\n\n\nLOCATION:\n\n\n\n2421 Bissonnet St\n\nHouston\, TX 77005\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA moving and timely collection of testimonials from people impacted by hate before and after the 2016 presidential election  \nIn American Hate: Survivors Speak Out\, Arjun Singh Sethi\, a community activist and civil rights lawyer\, chronicles the stories of individuals affected by hate. In a series of powerful\, unfiltered testimonials\, survivors tell their stories in their own words and describe how the bigoted rhetoric and policies of the Trump administration have intensified bullying\, discrimination\, and even violence toward them and their communities. \nWe hear from the family of Khalid Jabara\, who was murdered in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, in August 2016 by a man who had previously harassed and threatened them because they were Arab American. Sethi brings us the story of Jeanette Vizguerra\, an undocumented mother of four who took sanctuary in a Denver church in February 2017 because she feared deportation under Trump’s cruel immigration enforcement regime. Sethi interviews Taylor Dumpson\, a young black woman who was elected student body president at American University only to find nooses hanging across campus on her first day in office. We hear from many more people impacted by the Trump administration\, including Native\, black\, Arab\, Latinx\, South Asian\, Southeast Asian\, Muslim\, Jewish\, Sikh\, undocumented\, refugee\, transgender\, queer\, and people with disabilities. \nA necessary book for these times\, American Hate explores this tragic moment in U.S. history by empowering survivors whose voices white supremacists and right-wing populist movements have tried to silence. It also provides ideas and practices for resistance that all of us can take to combat hate both now and in the future. \n\nArjun Singh Sethi is a community activist\, civil rights lawyer\, writer\, and law professor based in Washington\, DC. He works closely with Muslim\, Arab\, South Asian\, and Sikh communities and advocates for racial justice\, equity\, and social change at both the local and the national levels. His writing has appeared in CNN Opinion\, The Guardian\, Politico magazine\, USA Today\, and the Washington Post\, and he is featured regularly on national radio and television. He holds faculty appointments at Georgetown University Law Center and Vanderbilt University Law School\, and presently co-chairs the American Bar Association’s National Committee on Homeland Security\, Terrorism\, and Treatment of Enemy Combatants.

SUMMARY:The Green Book: African-American Travel in the Jim Crow Era
DESCRIPTION:Under Jim Crow segregation laws\, African-Americans were often met with discrimination and intimidation as they traveled across the United States. Victor Green\, a black postal worker in New York\, published the first Negro Motorist Green Book in 1936 as a guide to businesses that would serve African-American travelers; over the next 28 years\, the annual publication helped scores of motorists find hotels\, tourist homes\, restaurants\, barber shops\, beauty parlors\, service stations and taverns across the country. \nGreen wrote that the Green Book would not be necessary “when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges.” He died in 1960 and the last edition of the guide was published in 1966. By that time\, the development of the national highway system had decreased the chances of discrimination against African-American motorists. The passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act made the Green Book and similar publications obsolete\, just as Green had predicted. \nHoustonians Toya and Reuben Levi organized the Green Book Project to document African-Americans’ experiences traveling across the U.S. under Jim Crow through photos\, interviews and documentation of existing sites listed in the Green Book. The Levis will discuss the history and legacy of the Green Book\, as well as some of the Houston locations listed in the guide through the years\, in this illustrated lecture. \nDoors will open at 6 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, September 25\, at the historic DeLuxe Theater\, 3303 Lyons Avenue. Free parking is available in the lot behind the theater as well as on the street. \nAdmission is free and open to the public; seating is limited. RSVP by Friday\, September 21. \n\n\nThis event is part of the Bart Truxillo Program Series\, which honors the memory of pioneer preservationist and Preservation Houston co-founder Bart Truxillo. The Bart Truxillo Program Series is made possible by the generous contributions of Preservation Houston’s members and friends.

SUMMARY:Migrant Children in Crisis - Dehumanization and Deprivation in Immigration Detention
DESCRIPTION:This is an interactive community event that begins with a conversation between physicians and faith leaders. The conversation will focus on the dehumanization and deprivations of children in immigration detention\, that compounds the trauma from the conditions from which they flee and the harrowing journey towards the specter of freedom that follows. People of good conscience gathered in the audience will break into groups for discussion about the issues and to explore ways to take action. This event is FREE. Light bites will be provided. SUMMARY:China’s National Sword Policy & It’s Impacts on Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. In September\, we welcome Jordan Fengel\, Executive Director of STAR (State of Texas Alliance for Recycling).  For nearly 50 years\, recycling has been a staple practice throughout many American communities. A recent policy change by the Chinese government in 2017\, enacted in 2018\, banning many recyclable materials from being imported\, has created a conundrum in the recycling industry. The US has relied on China to process our mixed plastic and mixed paper recyclables for the last 20+ years. With China set to eliminate all imports of recyclable materials by 2020\, Jordan will discuss what STAR is doing to turn the tide. He will explain how STAR sees this crisis more as a fantastic opportunity to build American processing and manufacturing markets that have been long needed. These markets will manage and create the products we use on a daily basis locally and regionally\, creating Texas jobs and providing economic growth.   Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com\, and you will receive an invitation to the web meeting.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Roy Zimmerman Concert: Potluck Fundraiser for Peace Camp Houston
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do about climate change\, torture\, racism\, xenophobia\, gun violence\, fracking\, Congressional ineptitude\, ignorance\, war and greed?  Write funny songs\, says Roy Zimmerman\, master satirist\, songwriter\, and performer. \nHPJC is bringing Roy Zimmerman back to Houston in a benefit to raise funds for Peace Camp Houston. Plus there’s an optional pot-luck dinner/social before the concert.\n \n“ReZist” is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman’s hilarious\, rhyme-intensive original songs. \n“Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression\,” says Roy\, “because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face\, I’m affirming the real possibility for change.” \nRoy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared stages with Bill Maher\, Robin Williams\, Ellen DeGeneres\, John Oliver\, Kate Clinton and George Carlin.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post. \nHe’s funny\, he’s a great musician\, he’s an excellent performer\, and his in-person performances are outstanding.  What more could you ask for? \nThe concert starts at 7:00 pm\, and there’s also an optional pot luck dinner and social at 6:00 pm — bring some food or drink to share\, if you wish. \nVisit Roy’s web site and check out his music on YouTube for more information about him and his music. If you can’t come\, but would like to help us pay expenses so more children can attend peace camp\, go to the Peace Camp Houston donation form. \nReserve your discount seats now!\nWe’re asking for a contribution of $20 at the door\, or $15 in advance\, but if that’s too much for you\, please let us know. \n\nIf you’d like to purchase tickets with a check\, make it payable to “Houston Peace and Justice Center”\, and indicate “Roy Zimmerman” on the memo line. Please also send us your email so we can add to our updates list! Mail it to HPJC\, PO Box 66234\, Houston TX 77266-6234. Mail early so that we’ll receive the checks at least 2 days before the event.\nBetter still\, reserve/purchase your tickets online\n\nWe’ll also collect additional donations just for this summer’s Peace Camp Houston\, for those who can give more.  We hope to add more weeks of peace camp\, at different locations\, and provide subsidies for more children of lower income families – it all depends on how much funds we can raise. Please give generously!
