SUMMARY:Reconnecting Communities after a Natural Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Brett Perkison of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for a discussion of the effects that repeated record flooding due to climate change can have on local communities – often having more impact on lower socioeconomic communities who have less flood control measures put in place and have less resilience to recover from them due to financial constraints. Dr. Perkison will also focus on efforts of the local Houston community to improve resiliency through public advocacy – reviewing both the progress and the barriers that they have had encountered along the way. Interactive discussion with the virtual audience about how members of the Houston community can help to be better prepared for the next flooding event and how they can best assist their neighbors will be encouraged. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/reconnecting-communities-after-a-natural-disaster-tickets-504059023107. SUMMARY:Student-Led Resistance to Voter Suppression\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The history of voter suppression efforts on HBCU campuses is long and ugly\, but there is an equally long history of student-led resistance.  Please join the Center for the Healing of Racism on Monday\, February 27\, 2023\, 6:00 to 8:00 PM (on Zoom)\, to hear Prairie View A&M professor Ron Goodwin\, Ph.D. discuss the history of voter suppression and student resistance at Prairie View A&M in Texas. Dr. Goodwin is an engaging\, passionate\, and authentic speaker who will draw on the lessons of history to provide context for current efforts to restrict access to democracy for students of color and to perpetuate racism and racial disparities through interference in education. A facilitated dialogue will follow the presentation.\n\nRon Goodwin is an Associate Professor at Prairie View A&M University and a native of San Antonio\, Texas. His research interests focus on the intersection of race and neighborhood development\, the political impacts of the urban planning processes\, and the cultural preservation of Texas’ Black community through the New Deal’s Slave Narratives. SUMMARY:Watershed Connections: Land\, Water\, and People
DESCRIPTION:Houston is the Bayou City\, but many of us do not touch or experience these creeks and streams in our daily lives. Join Charriss York\, Program Director for Green Infrastructure and Stormwater at Texas Community Watershed Partners as she discusses the intersection of land\, water\, and people along with steps we can take as both individuals and a community to address local water issues\, because as James Karr said\, “what we do on the land\, we read in the water.” Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Texas JSA Spring State Convention
DESCRIPTION:Hello\, \n  \nMy name is Jack Sims\, and I am an Activism Agent for the Junior State of America (JSA). We are a youth-run\, non-partisan 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been dedicated to educating and involving young people in civic processes and the importance of participation in a democratic society as one of the largest student-run organizations in the country. We think Houston Peace and Justice center has a lot to offer and would like to invite you to send a representative to speak about your organization to our members at the Activism Fair we host during our annual Spring State Convention in Houston\, Texas on April 15-16. \n  \nDuring the Activism Fair\, organizations set up booths and present their organization to JSAers. This will likely be an approximately hour-long time commitment for your representative on one of the days (either the 15th or 16th\, TBD)\, and you can include information on everything from what your organization does to how JSAers can get involved with the issue and how they can assist your organization. \n  \nIf your organization is interested in sending a representative\, please let me know\, and I will provide additional information on the convention’s location\, logistics\, and schedule. \n  \nWe would be incredibly grateful if you’d be willing to get involved\, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have! I look forward to hearing back from you soon. \n  \nThank you\, \nJack Sims \nActivism Agent \nJunior State of America

SUMMARY:Justice Interconnections: Climate\, Race\, Economy\, Health\, Migration & More

Mel Caraway\, as he leads us in an exploration of how all these divergent factors interconnect and make solving the climate crisis more complex. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that children develop racial biases between ages 2-4.  Explicitly discussing race and racism in developmentally appropriate ways is an important step in creating an anti-racist environment. Moreover\, nurturing racial pride benefits children of color socially\, cognitively\, and academically. \nPlease join the Center for the Healing of Racism for “Race\, Racial Identity and Racism in Early Childhood\,” a Saturday afternoon workshop for parents\, teachers and others who work with young children\, on May 6\, 2023\, 2:00-4:00 PM.  The workshop\, led by Dr. Flóra Faragó\, will guide us to a better understanding of how we can create nurturing environments where all children are supported and affirmed.  The program will take place at 3412 Crawford Avenue\, Houston\, TX 77004. \nDr. Faragó\, is an Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Studies at Stephen F. Austin State University. Her teaching and research interests center around children’s prejudice and stereotype development\, anti-bias and anti-racist curricula and parenting\, and inclusive early childhood education related to race and gender. \nKenyan poet Qui Qarre will perform spoken word\, thanks to generous support from the Jung Center and Houston Coalition Against Hate.  Participants will receive a copy of the book:  Our Skin:  A First Conversation about Race (First Conversations) by Megan Madison and Jessica Ralli. \nThis program is free and open to the public\, with donations encouraged.  Free parking is available in Lot 9 at Holman and Crawford/Almeda.  To reserve your spot please register no later than May 5\, 2023 at:  https://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/race-racial-identity-and-racism-in-early-childhood/

SUMMARY:Federal Incentives for Energy Efficiency and Renewables: Why They Matter to People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:We now have a wide window of opportunity to make real\, lasting changes for clean energy and reducing carbon pollution. The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are investing billions of dollars to build clean energy sources\, electrify school buses\, cap orphaned wells\, and much\, much more.  In addition\, there are many incentives for households\, and houses of worship\, to invest in energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy.  People of faith therefore play a vital role in determining how federal funds are spent and the quality of the investments made. Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for Texas Interfaith Power & Light and Rebecca McIlwain\, Community Outreach Coordinator with Texas Climate Jobs Project\, will give an overview of the available federal grants/incentives and talk about what you can do to ensure the money is invested in a way that makes the most impact and promotes justice. Time for interactive Q&A with the speakers will be provided.  Please register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/federal-incentives-for-energy-efficiency-and-renewables-tickets-608800277017.  Texas Climate Jobs Project (TCJP) is a nonprofit organization that supports clean energy that is inclusive to everyone concerned and creates decent work opportunities that leave no one behind. Texas Interfaith Power & Light is the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Justice Advocacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 is the perfect time to refresh your advocacy knowledge and set goals for engaging your faith community around issues that impact the planet and its peoples. Why is it such a perfect time? The Texas legislative session just ended\, and in September all eyes will turn toward the 2024 elections. Faith communities typically don’t want to be seen as “political\,” but\, as we’ll cover in this workshop\, faith communities can—and should—provide important education and leadership roles in nonpartisan civic engagement. Join Bee Moorhead\, executive director of Texas Impact\, an interfaith justice advocacy organization\, and her colleagues\, to talk about what that looks like “in real life\,” and do a deep dive into Texas Impact’s specific Houston-area resources and projects.  Register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/interfaith-justice-advocacy-workshop-tickets-627649485507. SUMMARY:Interconnections with the Environment: Ecosystem Services & Us
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Kerri Crawford of the University of Houston to consider more deeply the interconnections between humans and our environment\, through the lens of ecosystem services. As biodiversity is lost through anthropogenic changes\, it is becoming increasingly clear how much we rely on the natural world. Nature provides us with many services\, including water purification\, climate regulation\, and pollination. However\, what happens to these services when we start losing biodiversity? Can we restore ecosystem services once they are damaged? This presentation will highlight how we benefit from nature\, new research on how humans are influencing ecosystem services\, and paths forward to restore nature and the benefits it provides.  Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. SUMMARY:Eating Plant-Based for Our Climate and Health. Your Faith Community Can\, Too!
DESCRIPTION:A year ago\, our ministers directed church staff to change the Sunday lunch menu to plant-based food. What inspired them to act?   For a year\, our church’s Climate Action Team has hosted monthly plant-based potlucks.   The potlucks turn out five times as many participants as the monthly lectures that we used to hold. That’s inspiration! \nEating plant-based for our climate will help as much as solar\, reports Project Drawdown.  Plus\, health experts are encouraging us all to eat more plant-based foods.  Eating more plant-based foods makes it easy for everyone to help the planet and their own health. Nan Hildreth\, leader of the Climate Action Team at First Unitarian Universalist Church\, and team member Karoline Mueller\, Ph.D.\, will tell the story of their church’s journey toward plant-based eating\, but they’d also like to hear from the audience about their experiences at their faith communities. Register for this event on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/eating-plant-based-for-our-climate-health-your-faith-community-can-too-tickets-710711415977. SUMMARY:Weelaunee Worldwide: Block Cop City Speaking Tour
DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation to join a powerful collective action. \nAfter more than two years of struggle to defend the Weelaunee forest in southeast Atlanta from the construction of a militarized police training facility\, the movement is at a crucial crossroads. This November\, there is a call for a mass action to halt construction on the site. We know the city won’t listen to the overwhelming desire of the people\, and the risks of inaction are far too great. With our future on the line and the whole world watching\, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. \nThis presentation will cover the history of the movement so far\, how we’ve arrived at the current conjuncture\, and help us get ready to join each other in November. Together we can Block Cop City. \nMore info at blockcopcity.org

SUMMARY:Interconnections with Soil\, Human Health and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Soil is essential to all life and is important to human health in many ways. It can filter water\, provide nutrients and food\, store carbon\, and supply us with antibiotics to fight diseases. However\, soils are often mistreated by industrial agriculture and contaminated by environmental pollutants like oil spills which can directly affect human and environmental health. Sara Denison\, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University\, will discuss how soil contamination\, human health and the environment are all connected and ways contaminated soils can be cleaned up and restored. In addition\, she will discuss the health burden associated with exposure to particular contaminants found in soils around Houston and technology that she is researching that will help remove these contaminants from soil. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. The Observer strives to make Texas a more equitable place through investigative reporting\, narrative storytelling\, and political and cultural coverage and commentary. They dig beyond the headlines and contextualize news events. Their essays\, reviews\, and criticism seek to create a new cultural canon and challenge existing mythologies. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 1954\, the Observer has focused on communities whose stories are too often ignored or poorly told. It seeks not only to inform\, but to empower their readers\, as they work to hold public officials and corporations accountable. Their reporters recognize that oppressed people are experts on their own lives and trust their expertise. \n\n\n\nThe Texas Observer’s journalism is fact-based and rigorous\, and they prize writing that entertains as it informs. They value history as a reporting tool that allows us to interrogate the origins of policies and to correct narratives that whitewash exploitation\, dispossession\, and genocide. \n\n\n\nLocal Peacemaker awardees:\n\n\n\nKristen Schlemmer\n\n\n\nKristen Schlemmer\n\n\n\nKristen Schlemmer is a lawyer who works every day to secure water justice in her hometown of Houston. As the Legal Director of Bayou City Waterkeeper since 2018\, her work confronts the many facets of water injustice\, from water pollution and infrastructure failures\, to wetlands destruction and flooding\, to inequities in climate mitigation and disaster recovery. In 2021\, Kristen helped secure a $2 billion consent decree that will transform Houston’s wastewater infrastructure over the next generation. \n\n\n\nBefore joining Bayou City Waterkeeper\, Kristen’s legal work included developing a precedent-setting legal theory for families flooded during Harvey\, defending the city of Houston’s equal rights ordinance\, and representing marine mammal scientists in seeking better living conditions for a captive orca. She previously worked at Susman Godfrey LLP and Irvine & Conner PLLC and clerked for two federal judges. \n\n\n\nHer perspective is shaped by her childhood in Houston and South America\, previous translation work with Brazilian human rights organizations\, earlier advocacy focused on wildlife and farmed animals\, legal education at Tulane in post-Katrina New Orleans\, and motherhood. She is a Texas Gulf Coast Master Naturalist and previously served on the local board of New Leaders Council and the Houston Regional committee of the Sierra Club\, Lone Star Chapter. Kristen and her family live a short walk from Buffalo Bayou. \n\n\n\nJacilet Griffin\n\n\n\nJacilet Griffin\n\n\n\nJacilet Griffin formed “From Custody to Casket” after her son was murdered in the Harris County Jail over a year ago.  The Texas Rangers investigated his murder after the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.   The Sheriff’s Office continually lied about the circumstances\, once claiming he might have died from food poisoning\, then claiming he might have died from a friendly game of slap boxing.  They (HCSO) hid the circumstances and claimed they did not know what happened the entire time.   \n\n\n\nJacilet Griffin lost her son to our local Criminal Justice System.  She used her grief to focus and empower her to start changing the system. She contacted state rep Ron Reynolds and Shelia Jackson Lee to create a law to help prevent others from dying while in custody.  House Bill 3434\, also to be known as the Evan Griffin Lee bill\, was introduced by Rep Ron Reynolds to ensure inmates living with mental health issues are separated from the general population. Ms. Griffin says her son was suffering at the time of his arrest.  \n\n\n\nShe has also helped the Public Defender’s Office with a new program called Participatory Defense.  The first one was created in the Sunnyside neighborhood under her leadership.  The program empowers families who have had a loved one arrested and informs them of their rights and gives them resources. Unfortunately within this process\, Jacilet lost her job and has been struggling financially.  Just prior to her son’s murder\, her goddaughter was killed by a Precinct 4 Deputy Constable traveling at a very high rate of speed.  Precinct 4 has claimed that she was at fault even though her car was almost torn in half and struck by the marked unit driven by the deputy who never applied his brakes. \n\n\n\nJacilet Griffin never gave up\, but turned her frustration and anger into action\, helping to try to change the criminal justice system in Harris County. “I say to anyone that is dealing with the gravity of such death of their loved ones\, don’t give up on trying to reach whomever and whatever to try and get answers\,” said Griffin. “And I think this is something Evan would definitely be proud of.” \n\n\n\nLorena Perez McGill\n\n\n\nLorena Perez McGill\n\n\n\nLorena Perez McGill is an immigration attorney\, and has taught at American University – Washington College of Law\, the University of Houston Law Center\, and the Georgetown University Law Center. \n\n\n\nShe is Founder and Managing Partner of Perez McGill Law Firm in Spring\, TX\, and represents clients from Bolivia\, Brazil\, Cameroon\, Cuba\, El Salvador\, Guatemala\, Haiti\, Honduras\, Mexico\, Nicaragua\, Peru\, Russia\, and Venezuela\, in US immigration law matters. \n\n\n\nBefore Immigration Courts\, she has represented over 55 asylum-seekers and individuals facing deportation in immigration courts in Arizona\, California\, Colorado\, Florida\, Georgia\, Louisiana\, Maryland\, Minnesota\, Nevada\, New York\, and Texas. She has represented detained clients\, some of whom have been granted release on bond in amounts ranging from $5\,000 to $25\,000\, and some of whom have been granted asylum or withholding of removals. \n\n\n\nBefore the Board of Immigration Appeals\, she has represented over a dozen asylum-seekers on appeal. Some of are pending before the BIA\, and three were remanded in the last two years; \n\n\n\nShe has also represented numerous clients before agencies within the US Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). \n\n\n\nHer current volunteer work includes: \n\n\n\nVolunteer mediator with the Montgomery County Dispute Resolution Center in Conroe (mediate contractual and labor & employment cases).Volunteer lawyer with Kids in Need of Defense in Houston (represent low-income immigrants in their Special Immigrant Juvenile Status visa processes).Volunteer lawyer with Lone Star Legal Aid and the Montgomery County Women’s Center\, in Conroe (represent low-income victims of crimes and domestic violence in the attainment of special U and VAWA visas).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChanges for this year\n\n\n\nThe event will be a bit different this year. We’ve decided not to have it at a hotel\, all of which have become quite expensive and which require payment months in advance even when we don’t know what the attendance will be. \n\n\n\nIt’s still going to be both an awards ceremony/celebration\, and also a social event\, where you can visit with people from other organizations involved with work for peace\, justice\, and the environment. We plan to have a variety of hors d’oeuvres and drinks (but not a full dinner) served buffet style\, and we will combine the event with what used to be the pre-dinner reception that we used to have in the foyer outside the banquet rooms of hotels we’ve used. \n\n\n\nWe plan to keep the event shorter than in recent years\, as several of you have requested. \n\n\n\nThe Dominican Sisters of Houston are graciously allowing us to use their large “Meeting Room” at the Dominican Center\, which is not only centrally located (east of the Medical Center)\, but also is a less formal venue which allows us more flexibility as well. \n\n\n\nReservations\n\n\n\nTo help us honor and celebrate the awardees\, please make your reservations for the event\, using our Peacemaker Awards reservation form. There’s a discount for early registration\, and advance reservations are required. We can accommodate a limited numbers of people\, so don’t wait until November to make your reservations. \n\n\n\nThis is our major fundraiser for the year\, and helps to pay expenses for Peace Camp\, for micro-grants we provide to other non-profits\, for sponsorships of events\, and more. So we greatly appreciate donations of more than the minimum.

SUMMARY:From Underground to On the Grid
DESCRIPTION:Join Adrian Shelley\, Texas Office Director for Public Citizen\, as he delves into energy\, from underground to on the grid.  Texas has been an energy state for more than a century. But as the global energy market shifts away from fossil fuels and toward clean sources such as wind\, solar\, and battery storage\, Texas risks being left behind. At the start of the 21st century\, Texas pursued an all-of-the-above energy strategy that saw the largest investment in wind energy in history. More recently\, the fossil fuel industry has changed its tactics as it responds to the existential threat of climate change. Today we see political decision making that favors the entrenched business interests of the fossil fuel industry over average Texans. This explains why Texas lawmakers are not pursing common sense solutions to fixing Texas’ ailing electricity grid. These solutions include demand-side strategies such as energy efficiency and demand response\, which can stabilize our grid\, save consumers money\, and make homes more resilient to temperature extremes. Time for Q&A with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-underground-to-on-the-grid-tickets-737952103607. SUMMARY:Save a Life\, Sponsor a Family from Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join Live Oak Friends\, in person or online\, on Sunday\, May 12 at 9:20am to hear a special Zoom presentation by North America for Ukraine (NA4U)\, a volunteer-led organization that works to help Ukrainians seeking refuge connect with approved Americans who can sponsor them.\nIt has been two years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, and millions of Ukranians still face the daily threat of violence\, as well as freezing temperatures\, inadequate shelter\, heat and other supplies. Thousands of families have been forced to leave everything behind in search of safety and tens of thousands more are waiting for the opportunity. \n\nThere are two ways you can help Ukrainian families through sponsorship:\n\n \nA paper-sponsor is someone who only submits the paperwork to USCIS while the refugee lives with a verified host\, usually a family member or friend. \n\n \nA hosting sponsor provides accommodations and assistance with travel and filing necessary paperwork. Ukrainians are eligible to work immediately upon arrival and realistically may need housing support for 3-6 months while they establish themselves. \n\n\nNA4U has proudly helped thousands of families connect with sponsors but we are in dire need of more.

SUMMARY:Restoration\, Renewal & Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Restoration and Renewal are somewhat synonymous activities\, and Regeneration in the case of nature seems to occur when damage ceases and nature can then continue its process.  Here on Earth\, with our modern civilization that is now so huge that it has such a significant effect on nature\, scientists are sounding the alarm and people are responding.  Steve Stelzer\, as the former program director (now retired) at Houston’s Green Building Resource Center has been exposed to many points of view while at the center\, and will point out some issues to be aware of while deciding how to engage in these three categories\, and give suggestions for resources to develop a best approach. Time for interactive Q&A with the speaker will be provided. Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/restoration-renewal-regeneration-tickets-875537144167. This program will be recorded and the recording distributed to all registrants. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \n
