SUMMARY:The People's Peaceful Protest: Resistance is Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Due to permit issues\, we will have a peaceful protest/sit-in and the People’s Peaceful Protest is changing venues from Discovery Green to City Hall. We will meet at City Hall at 1PM Jan. 18. Lawn chairs and small coolers will be allowed. Please leave glass containers at home. No mace\, pocket knives\, guns\, multi-tools or any weapons of any style are permitted. Megaphones are not allowed because we do not have a noise permit. SUMMARY:Rothko Chapel's MLK Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the Chapel’s annual observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday on January 15\, 2022\, the program opens with a performance of and discussion about music central to the US Civil Rights Movement. The Community Music Center of Houston Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra conducted by Dr. Anne Lundy will share a selection of music central to Dr. King’s transformative leadership and Black Americans’ historic and contemporary protests for equity. Dr. Shana L. Redmond\, scholar of music\, race and politics\, will discuss the broader history surrounding the role of music in activism in the U.S.\, the importance of music in Rev. King’s life\, and the strategic use of music within the Civil Rights Movement.\n\nThe Rothko Chapel started the annual MLK Birthday Celebration in 1979 to connect the contemporary implications of Dr. King’s legacy to the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights\, captured by artist Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk. This sculpture\, located on the plaza adjacent to the Chapel\, is dedicated to Dr. King.

SUMMARY:Press Conference with Quannel X
DESCRIPTION:Good morning everyone\, It has come to light that the district clerk of Brazoria County Tx was tampering with jury pools to stack juries against people of color. The Tx Rangers started an investigation but once the investigation started\, she was allowed to retire. Her intentionally malicious actions have to lead to hundreds of not thousands of people of color going through trials with stacked juries and vertically zero chance of a fair trial. Hundreds of not thousands of people of color are now in prison\, with others having their kids taken away and fostered or adopted out to other families. The Tx Ranger investigating is complicit in this corruption\, Rhonda Barchak’s own attorney admitted that judges\, prosecutors\, attorneys etc all knew what she was doing and allowed her to do it. My cousin is a 32 year old black man who was sentenced to life for a murder he did not commit by an all white jury\, majority middle aged. Every bit of evidence cleared his name including dna and forensics present on the victims body and bed\, it was determined to not be his DNA. Geofencing and GPS determined that he was no where near the victims home when the crime occurred\, they even validated his alibi and it still only took that jury 2 hours to find him guilty. The next day\, they gave him life. They have been doing this to people for at least the last decade\, and if we don’t get the Feds to step in and take over the investigation\, it will be swept under the rug. Thomas Norsworthy\, the Tx Ranger’s investigator works down here and has close and personal friendships WITH the people he’s supposedly investigating. We CAN NOT let this go\, we can not let this be swept under the rug. We’re holding our 3rd press conference with Quanell X at the FBI headquarters in Houston Tx\, tomorrow\, Friday Nov 5 2021 at 12pm and we need EVERY ABLE BODIED PERSON to come stand with us\, to show a United front and let the Feds know that if they refuse to step in and do what’s right\, we will know they too\, are complicit. Please join us if you can

SUMMARY:End the Texas Abortion Ban!
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Legislature’s ban on almost all abortions threatens the freedom\, health\, and lives of people seeking to terminate their pregnancies. This horrific new law will especially harm people of color and workers. It is time for us to hold members of the Texas Legislature who approved this law accountable for their actions.\n\nAn energetic demonstration against the Texas abortion ban will be held on Wednesday\, November 3\, at 5 pm\, at the office of state Senator Paul Bettencourt\, 11451 Katy Freeway. Bettencourt was a sponsor of this unconscionable law and showed complete disregard for the freedom\, health\, and lives of people seeking abortions.\n\nThis action is being organized by Houston United Front Against Fascism and Houston Socialist Movement. Please plan to join us on November 3 and help spread the word.

SUMMARY:Film showing - Abby Martin's Gaza Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The documentary was made during\, and depicts\, the Great March of Return protests\, whose images Palestinians of slain medics\, journalists\, women\, children\, and disabled people resounded throughout the world in 2018. The Trump administration’s deepened support for the most extreme Israeli positions is also displayed in the film\, with clips of Trump’s moving of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and preparation for the “Deal of the Century.” \nThe government of Israel tightly restricts the presence of journalists in the Gaza. In order to work around these restrictions\, The Empire Files team collaborated with Palestinian videographers from Gaza. \nGaza is  the 25-mile long\, seven-mile wide strip of occupied and blockaded land that the World Health Organization has said will be unfit for human occupation by 2020. The description of Gaza as an “open-air prison” is commonly used these days\, but Gaza Fights for Freedom gives a visceral and painful view of this descriptor. Narrated by Martin\, the camera winds us through the streets of Gaza\, through the rubble of past Israeli aerial assaults–2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and intermittent years.  The attack in 2014 alone destroyed nearly 20\,000 homes. Gaza is unable to recover from this destruction\, rebuild or remove the debris due to the blockade. The film takes us through densely populated cities\, where families have no choice but to drink water unsafe for consumption. \nThe height of the Great March Of Return protests\, it features exclusive footage of demonstrations where 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by Israeli snipers since March 30\, 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the annual Houston Women’s March on Saturday\, January 25\, 2020.  Our theme this year is “Powerful Together.” On that day\, women and our allies will march for civil rights and democracy and to address human needs and stand up to authoritarian\, divisive and dangerous policies that have been proposed or enacted against marginalized people. \nThe 2020 election may well be the most important of our lifetimes.  We know how important it is to be united in a common purpose. \nPlease join us as we demonstrate on the streets of Houston that we are all Powerful Together.  The march begins at 9 a.m. at the Buffalo Bayou Water Works at 105 Sabine Street.  We will march to City Hall for a rally with grassroots speakers representing progressive organizations and ideals. We will also hear from candidates for public office\, provide voter registration\, offer poster making supplies\, and create a memorable experience for our marchers to ignite momentum for the 2020 election.  Sign up for the march here.  If you are interested in volunteering\, please sign up here.  If you or your organization would like to sponsor the march\, please contact our March Chair at sheilavotes@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:No War on Iran! U.S. Out of the Middle East!
DESCRIPTION:As the Trump administration escalates its campaign of violence and sanctions against Iran\, and refuses to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq\, the anti-war movement in our country cannot afford to take a break. We must build a mass popular movement that can force the U.S. government to abandon its plans for war on Iran and withdraw from Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries. \nAnother energetic demonstration against war and imperialism will be held on Sunday\, January 19\, at 2 pm\, at the intersection of Westheimer and Post Oak in Houston.. This is the day before the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and we will be remembering his insight that the U.S. government is “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.” \nWe cannot rely on the major political parties and politicians. It will take direct action by millions of people to defeat war and imperialism\, and open the door to revolutionary change. Please join Houston Socialist Movement\, Houston United Front Against Fascism\, Refuse Fascism-Houston\, and other organizations and friends on January 19. \nFor up to date information visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1473097776147692/

SUMMARY:No War on Iran! U.S. Out of the Middle East!
DESCRIPTION:The Trump administration’s assassination of Iranian military leader Qassim Suleimani and Iraqi military leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in Baghdad Thursday evening is an act of war. This unconscionable act of state terrorism is a grave escalation of Washington’s longstanding campaign to cripple Iran\, reassert control over Iraq\, and defend other U.S. imperialist interests in the region. \nAs people living in this country\, we have a special obligation to oppose war on Iran and demand the withdrawal of U.S. military forces\, mercenaries\, and intelligence agents from the Middle East. Please join Houston Socialist Movement and friends for an energetic demonstration against war and imperialism this Sunday\, January 5\, at 2 pm\, at the intersection of Westheimer Rd. and Post Oak Blvd.

SUMMARY:Houston Demands Trump/Pence Out Now! #OutNow!
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US and DEMAND: The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go – NOW! \nThe time has come to launch mass\, sustained\, non-violent protests that come back week after week\, refusing to stop until the Trump/Pence Regime has been removed from power. \n**IT BEGINS: Saturday\, October 19 New York & Los Angeles\n** IT CONTINUES AND SPREADS: Saturday\, October 26 NATIONWIDE PROTESTS \nand the next Saturday (11/2)… and the next (11/9)… and the next (11/16)… \nFor more information please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/westheimer-rd-post-oak-blvd/houston-demands-trumppence-out-now-outnow/897267933974638/ \nPuerto Rico and Hong Kong show us how:\nTrumpPenceOutNOW! \nConcentration Camps on the border… the earth melts and burns… the danger of war\, even nuclear… white supremacy rules… fascist mobs and mass murderers… truth and science erased… the right to abortion near gone… democratic and civil rights are stripped away… THIS IS FASCISM UNFOLDING. \nThe Trump/Pence regime must go now because of the danger it poses to humanity. It must go now because fascism eliminates the right to dissent\, undermining every aspiration and struggle for justice… it has direction and momentum that must be stopped before it becomes too late. \nImpeachment hearings have begun – opening a new stage of struggle. The Trump/Pence regime and their hardcore base are gearing up and will not give up. The Democratic Party leadership refuses to utter the word Fascism and have conciliated and facilitated the assault on fundamental rights. Any illusions that “we can leave things to the Democrats” or wait til 2020 would be extremely dangerous. The only way to stop is by manifesting the power of millions in the streets. We must seize on the crisis now erupting to take history into our own hands – turning dread for the future into a force for hope. \nThe world as we have known it is being torn asunder. We must cast off fear and passivity because the future depends on it. Let’s refuse to allow our differences to stand in the way of rising together in an unprecedented\, unrelenting mass struggle to confront the danger of a Trump/Pence fascist America. \nIn the Name of Humanity\, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America!

SUMMARY:US Climate Strikes | September 20\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Climate Strike will be the biggest climate strike in Houston history. As the energy capital world\, Houston is in a position to push the global community toward green energy. This transition will include access to training\, unionized jobs\, and support for those impacted by the switch in industry. We invite you to come stand with us and continue to the fight for a better future! If you are planning on joining us please remember to carpool\, walk\, or take public transportation if you are able to! \nSign up at https://actionnetwork.org/events/houston-climate-strike-2? \nJOIN THE CLIMATE STRIKE\nBeing a young person in 2019 means living every day in fear and dread as we see the foundations of civilization crumbling around us. \nIt means trying not to imagine what the world will look like in 30 years\, or even 10 years. \nScientists tell us we have just 11 years to transform our economy before it’s too late to protect human civilization as we know it. To achieve the scale of transformation science demands\, we need elected officials at every level of government to treat the climate crisis like the emergency it is and make the Green New Deal their top priority. But right now\, the leaders supposed to tackle this crisis are either asleep at the wheel or purposely driving us toward catastrophe so their oil and gas billionaire friends can keep raking in profits. \nDespite calls for a climate debate in the forms of 540\,000 petition signatures\, all major presidential candidates\, and over 100 DNC members\, the DNC voted on the weekend of August 24th to deny the resolution for a climate debate. Our future is at stake\, but Tom Perez just swept aside the climate crisis for someone else to solve. \nThat isn’t leadership. Once again\, we will have to take the lead. We will start by striking together. Will you join us?

SUMMARY:Houstonians for Migrant Justice Rally
DESCRIPTION:We live in a city where asylum seekers are being kept in detention centers\, one of which lies just outside Downtown and is housing teenagers indefinitely. These centers are run by the Southwest Key Programs\, whose leaders are profiting off of the detainment of children and have yet to share adequate information about the conditions in these centers. We\, as Houstonians\, are obligated to come together to stand with the migrants in our city and call out maltreatment of migrants when it occurs. This is why Houstonians for Migrant Justice is committed to the humanitarian care\, timely reunification\, and just legal representation for migrants sheltered in our community\, and transparency and accountability from the agencies that provide these services.  \nOur group intends to use this joint rally-fundraiser to pursue this transparency and accountability\, by engaging with elected officials and urging them to visit the Southwest Key detention centers in Houston and by raising money for a prominent group providing pro-bono legal aid to Houston migrants.  \nThe rally will be held on Saturday September 14\, tentatively from 5:30-8:30pm at the Casa Sunzal detention center (419 Emancipation Ave). We will meet at Settegast Park (3000 Garrow St) at 5:30pm and walk for about 5-10 minutes to the detention center.  \nIf you are interested in volunteering with us to fundraise and conduct community outreach\, please contact us here.

SUMMARY:Another Antifascist Action at GRB!
DESCRIPTION:Are you sickened and outraged by the recent white supremacist murders in El Paso? By the Christchurch mosque murders? By the murders at the Pittsburgh synagogue? By the murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville? By the murders at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston? Are you ready to take a stand against the fascists and other white supremacists who are committing or encouraging these heinous crimes? \nYou are invited to participate in a counter-demonstration against the Texas Patriot Network and other white supremacists at the George R. Brown Convention Center\, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas\, on Saturday\, August 31. These racists will be protesting against the Islamic Society of North America Convention. Our counter-demonstration will begin at 7:30 am and continue until 5:30 pm. Come when you can\, and stay as long as you can. \nLast year this crew planned a three-day protest but barely got through the first day. We massively outnumbered them\, easily outshouted them\, and embarrassed them so badly that they could not get enough racists to come back on the second and third days. We know because we were there waiting for them each day. Solidarity among diverse organizations and individuals made last year’s antifascist action a great success. \nWe support our Muslim brothers’ and sisters’ right to hold their convention\, exercise their religious freedom\, and live as they wish without fear of violence\, harassment\, or intimidation. And we oppose any kind of platform for fascists. So once again\, we will be at GRB to drown out the racism and religious bigotry of TPN and their friends\, and drive them off the streets as soon as possible. \nThis anti-fascist action is endorsed by Familias Inmigrantes y Estudiantes en la Lucha (FIEL)\, Free Los Niños Coalition\, Houston Peace and Justice Center\, Houston Socialist Movement\, Houston United Front Against Fascism\, Janie Torres\, Mexicanos en Acción\, National Domestic Workers Alliance\, Refuse Fascism\, Socialist Alternative\, and other groups (list in formation). Please plan to join us on August 31. If you would like to help with security or logistics\, or receive more information\, please contact us. \nEnd White Supremacy! No Platform for Fascists! Workers of the World\, Unite! \nFor updates and other information\, please go to https://www.facebook.com/events/400885637183385/

SUMMARY:Stop Trump Now! No More Raids\, Detentions\, and Deportations!
DESCRIPTION:Trump’s relentless attacks on migrants are leading to more abuse\, neglect\, misery\, and deaths. It is time for people to take a stronger stand against this racist repression. The criminalization of migrants and militarization of the border has contributed to thousands of deaths in the past decade. Scores of migrants have died at the hands of the Trump administration. Families continue to be separated. And private migrant prisons are profiting from the government’s cruelty. \nAcquiescence in the opening of the Southwest Key child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue by most local officials is a bitter reminder that we cannot depend on politicians to end the attacks on migrants. We must recognize that the repression directed against migrants did not begin with the Trump administration. And history teaches us that it will take the power of the masses of people to stop this shameful mistreatment of our brothers and sisters from other countries. \nFree Los Ninos Coalition will hold a demonstration against SWK’s child detention center and call for an end to all raids\, detentions\, and deportions on Thursday\, July 4\, at 1 pm. This national holiday is the perfect time to point out how the systemic repression of migrants demonstrates that all the official rhetoric about “liberty and justice for all” is a lie. And for those of us who really do want freedom\, equality\, and real democracy\, this is the perfect time to come out and say so as we demand justice for migrants. \nPlease plan to join us on July 4\, at 1 p m\, at 419 Emancipation Avenue! For more information\, call 832.692.2306.

SUMMARY:Emergency Demonstration Against SWK's Child Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:On February 14\, Mayor Turner announced the elimination of the most important obstacles to the opening of Southwest Key’s new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue. His media advisory was misleading–it did not mention that a federal judge ruled against the City of Houston two months ago on the question of which permit is required. And now the administration’s previous expression of concern about sexual crimes\, abuse\, neglect\, and hundreds of other violations at SWK facilities seems to have disappeared! \nIn view of its awful record\, Southwest Key should not be allowed to house migrant children. The people of the most diverse city in the country have been opposing this facility since last June. And we must continue this struggle. We need to stop SWK from putting children at risk! The Free Los Niños Coalition will hold an emergency demonstration against SWK’s child detention center on Monday\, February 18\, at 5 pm. This will be the Coalition’s twelfth protest during the past eight months. The broadest possible participation is strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:No Wall! No Emergency Powers! Stop Trump's War Against Migrants!
DESCRIPTION:Trump is the most brazenly racist U.S. president in decades. Now he is declaring a national emergency in order to use money in the executive branch for a wall on the southern border. We need to oppose Trump’s efforts to revitalize white supremacy by scapegoating migrants and other people of color. We need to fight back against Trump’s attacks on women\, LGBT communities\, religious minorities\, workers\, and democratic-minded people. And we need to stop him from exercising emergency powers in violation of the Constitution and federal law. \nConsejo Migrante Por Un Cambio\, Houston United Front Against Fascism\, Refuse Fascism\, and other groups are organizing a demonstration against Trump’s wall\, his effort to exercise emergency powers\, and his war on migrants on Sunday\, February 17\, at 2 pm. We will assemble at Hermann Square and then march to the Leland Federal Bulding at 1919 Smith St. for a spirited demonstration. Everyone who shares our opposition to Trump is invited to join us on February 17.

SUMMARY:Tell the Mayor No Hostile Corporate Takeover of HISD
DESCRIPTION:Come to City Council to demand the city to BACK OFF of a corporate takeover plan for four black and brown HISD schools. \nSign up to speak for Tuesday afternoon Public Session by calling the City Secretary’s office at 832.393.1100\, sending an email to citysecretary@houstontx.gov or coming by the office on the public level of the City Hall Annex\, 900 Bagby\, Houston 77002 by 1:30 p.m. that Tuesday. \nIf you cannot attend\, contact your district rep\, the five at large reps\, and the mayor’s office (contact info at the bottom of this description). \nTHE FACTS\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nThe City of Houston has established a “nonprofit” astroturfed special interest group with the doublespeak title “Coalition for Educational Excellence and Equity in Houston”\, designed to mask the hostile corporate takeover over HISD schools. The registered agent is Juliet Stipeche\, the Mayor’s point person on education. The board comprises three wealthy right wing benefactors: Trini Mendenhall\, Corbin Robertson Jr\, and Stephanie Paige. \nPaige is the education contact for ALEC\, a right wing takeover group that disguises the self interest of the wealthy as the advancement of society through philanthropy. ALEC has a deep\, well-documented public track record of establishing beachheads in education and other public sectors\, dividing and conquering communities\, and selling them for parts. \nRobertson is a billionaire coal magnate known for expansive dark money efforts undermining climate research through fake advocacy to protect their bottom line by papering over steep environmental damage that disproportionately impacted poor communities in the United States. \nThese people have NO BUSINESS being anywhere NEAR anything that is supposed to be for the public good\, much less in control of the future of our children. \nCity of Houston Contact Info\nMayor’s Office\n(713) 697-9221 \nTwitter: @sylvesterturner\nPress Secretary: @iammarybenton\nDeputy Press Secretary: @tmakrivera \nDistrict A Councilmember Brenda Stardig\nPhone: 832.393.3010\nFAX; 832.393.3302\nE-Mail: districta@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @brendastardig \nDistrict B Councilmember Jerry Davis\nPhone: 832.393.3009\nFAX; 832.393.3291\nE-Mail: districtb@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @davisdistrictb \nDistrict C Councilmember and Mayor Pro-Tem Ellen Cohen\nPhone: 832.393.3004\nE-Mail: districtc@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @ellencohen \nDistrict D Councilmember Dwight Boykins\nPhone: 832.393.3001\nFAX; 832.393.3201\nE-Mail: districtd@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @dwightboykins \nDistrict E Councilmember Dave Martin\nPhone: 832.393.3008\nFAX: 832.393.3279\nE-Mail: districte@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @cmdavemartin \nDistrict F Councilmember Steve Le\nPhone: 832.393.3002\nE-Mail: districtf@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @SteveLe HTX \nDistrict G Councilmember Greg Travis\nPhone: 832.393.3007\nFAX; 832.395.9571\nE-Mail: districtg@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @travisdistrictg \nDistrict H Councilmember Karla Cisneros\nPhone: 832.393.3003\nE-Mail: districth@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @karla4houston \nDistrict I Councilmember Robert Gallegos\nPhone: 832.393.3011\nE-Mail: districti@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @robertgallegosi \nDistrict J Councilmember Mike Laster\nPhone: 832.393.3015\nFAX; 832.395.9423\nE-Mail: districtj@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @_mikelaster \nDistrict K Councilmember Martha Castex-Tatum\nPhone: 832.393.3016\nFAX: 832.395.9410\nE-Mail: districtk@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @marthacastext \nAt-Large 1 Councilmember Mike Knox\nPhone: 832.393.3014\nFAX: 832.395.9472\nE-Mail: atlarge1@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @mikeknox2015\nAt-Large 2 Councilmember David Robinson\nPhone: 832.393.3013\nFAX; 832.395.9455\nE-Mail: atlarge2@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @dwr4hou \nAt-Large 3 Councilmember Michael Kubosh\nPhone: 832.393.3005\nFAX; 832.393.3251\nE-Mail: atlarge3@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @kuboshmichael (Note: this account is protected).\nAt-Large 4 Councilmember Amanda Edwards\nPhone: 832.393.3012\nFAX; 832.393.3327\nE-Mail: atlarge4@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @amanda4houston \nAt-Large 5 Councilmember Jack Christie\nPhone: 832.393.3017\nFAX; 832.395.9426\nE-Mail: atlarge5@houstontx.gov\nTwitter: @drjackchristie
