SUMMARY:Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project
DESCRIPTION:This remarkable documentary chronicles the late 20th century into the 21st\, as experienced by a woman who might be the original news junkie. Marion Stokes (1929–2012) became known as a passionate activist\, articulately espousing her leftist views on local television in Philadelphia. \nRecorder pulls you into her secret life\, revealing that she spent decades obsessively recording TV programs around the clock. From the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis to the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre\, Stokes captured revolutions\, wars\, triumphs\, catastrophes\, bloopers\, talk shows\, and commercials on 70\,000 VHS tapes. A second marriage brought wealth\, but she ultimately became a recluse who saw her life’s work to be protecting the truth by archiving everything on TV. \nTickets can be purchased at https://www.mfah.org/calendar/recorder-the-marion-stokes-project \n“Fascinating\, weird\, and often quite moving.” —IndieWire \n“Intriguing from first minute to last…. Relating this stranger-than-fiction tale with the narrative twists and turns of a well-paced thriller\, Recorder will make news junkies feel a lot better about themselves.” —Hollywood Reporter \n“A pensive\, complicated romantic tragedy.” —Nonfics \n“More than just a portrait of a woman’s complicated relationships and obsessions … Recorder quietly seeds damning observations about the ways media narratives are formed\, and how the shapers of these narratives distort the truth and our worldview.” —Flixist \n• “The Incredible Story of Marion Stokes” —Fast Company \n• Find out more about Marion Stokes and her archive. \n• Read an article about the film in Talkhouse\, written by director Matt Wolf. \n• Read The New York Times review of the film.

SUMMARY:Join Us for a Repair Cafe! Recycle/Reuse/Repair Your Stuff!
DESCRIPTION:A Repair Cafe celebrates fixing through a fun\, collaborative\, hands-on\, fix-n-learn\, community event. People bring us their broken items for assessment\, disassembly and repair. Bring your toolkit and join us to have fun and learn while helping others troubleshoot and fix their broken stuff! Volunteers assess\, take apart\, and hopefully — REPAIR.\n\nTransition Houston is partnering with TX/RX Labs\, Houston Public Libraries\, the City of Houston Green Building Resource Center\, Houston Complete Communities\, Citizens’ Environmental Coalition\, Texas Campaign for the Environment\, KW Solar\, Repurpose Depot\, and the Houston Peace and Justice Center in this effort!\nDo you have an item in need of repair?\nWe invite you to bring in a broken item and meet local people who have offered to share their skills to help you make repairs. If you have nothing to repair\, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. You can also get inspired at the reading table\, by leafing through books on repairs and DIY.\n\nAcceptable Items to Bring – One item per person please\nClothing (for mending\, no alterations)\, Small Appliances\, Tools and Knives for Sharpening\nCan you volunteer to help with repair or the event?\nCalling all handywomen\, handymen\, handy kids\, handy teens and families\, tinkerers\, and sewers! Volunteer to have fun and learn through helping others troubleshoot and fix their broken stuff. Volunteers are also needed on the day of the event as guides and to assist with general coordination.\nSign Up to Participate!\nOnline at: https://repaircafehouston.eventbrite.com\nuse the QR code\, or contact Steve Stelzer at 832.394.9050.\nShare your ideas — Give your stuff a longer life — Fixing is good — Make it a way of life!\n\nPlease share this event with your groups and friends and help us build a sustainable future! \nWhy a Repair Cafe?\nOur society revolves around consumption. Personal consumption of durable goods add up to 8% of GDP\, and non-durable goods add up to 15%\, totaling about $4 trillion dollars annually in the USA! The more we buy\, the more we throw away\, often during the first year! And… most people no longer know how to repair things. For more information\, visit www.transitionhouston.org.\nThe Fixer’s Manifesto\n\n If it’s broken\, fix it!\n Give your stuff a longer life\n Enjoy hands-on\, fix-n-learn\, community based discovery\n Nurture curiosity\, share ideas and skills\n Fixing is good for us and good for the planet\n Disposability is a choice\n Make fixing a way of life!\n\nHouse Rules & Guidelines\nPlease take a moment to read the house rules outlining repair cafe and safety guidelines. Participation in the event requires all attendees to agree and abide by these rules. In general\,\n\n Local volunteers with a range of skills are available to give you ideas\, suggestions or a helping hand if needed with a repair.\n Visitors carry out the repairs themselves whenever possible\, but repair experts are on site and can help as needed.\n Please bring one broken or non-working item per person.*\n Carry-in items only (No stoves\, refrigerators\, or other large items)\n Volunteers offer no guarantee of items being repaired made by them or with their assistance\, and are not liable if objects repaired do not work properly at home.\n Volunteers are not obliged to reassemble disassembled appliances that cannot be repaired.\n If you need replacement parts\, such as plugs\, fuses etc. you may need to pay for these or pop out and buy them from a local shop.\n Visitors to Repair Café are solely responsible for the removal of broken objects that could not be repaired.\n A voluntary donation for workshop tools and repair materials is greatly appreciated.\n\n* Disclaimer – Please know you bring your items to be repaired at your own risk. Because repairs are made by unpaid volunteers there may be risks. Neither the facilitators of Repair Cafés nor the repair volunteers are liable for any loss or damage that may result from advice or instructions\, for the loss of items handed over for repair\, for indirect or consequential loss\, or for any other kind of loss resulting from repairs made by Repair Café.\nOur Sponsors

SUMMARY:Health Justice- Workers' Rights\, Work Life Balance and Being Good to Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Come to our gathering as we discuss health justice\, or how injustice and lack of action on various social justice issues worsens health outcomes and leads to higher health care costs.  For this month’s gathering\, we will discuss a few interrelated themes\, starting with labor and worker rights\, hostile work environments\, lack of work-life balance\, and its effect on health and health care costs.  Also to be discussed will be rethinking practices at schools and colleges with regard to extreme homework and study overloads\, and extreme busyness either imposed by other means such as city design\, or touted as a status symbol\, and why it is time to change our thinking and planning on this.  In living up to that ‘personal responsibility’ that proponents of our current immoral health care system love to ‘talk the talk’ about\, one of the best ways to really ‘walk the walk’ on this\, along with diet and exercise\, would be to re-evaluate not only our work environments and worker treatment\, but also look at how we can make it both feasible and fashionable to cut down on overwork and time overload from other areas of life.  I will give a brief presentation on these issues\, then open it up to all attendees to share their stories\, thoughts\, input\, suggestions\, etc. \n  \nMeeting will be held at: \nTarka Indian Kitchen\n721 W 19th St.\nHouston\, TX 77008

SUMMARY:VegFest Houston
DESCRIPTION:The 7th Annual VegFest Houston is moving to a huge new home at Minute Maid Park! Our Vegan Festival features include: superb vegan restaurants\, exciting vegan and abolitionist animal rights organizations\, ‘Kids Zone’ Makerspace with crafts\, vegan food & fitness demos\, our popular “Ask a Vegan” booth and panels\, free product samples\, like-minded community booths and green businesses\, plus raffle prize giveaways. Join us we make history again on Saturday\, July 13\, 2019!  \n\n\n\nOur family-friendly annual festival is open to the public.  Attendees can reserve a VIP  PASSin advance (while supplies last)\, which offers special perks including early entrance\, the festival tote\, coupons\, express entry wristband and other vegan swag.\n\n\n\nVegFest Houston is The Premier Vegan Community Festival of Texas! In 2010\, our co-founder Kristen Lee Ohanyan proposed the idea for Houston’s first and only vegan festival to her fellow Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. board members & leadership team colleagues. That dream soon became a reality! With the support of our dedicated volunteers\, our nonprofit created the first-ever VegFest Houston\, which debuted in 2011. \nVegFest Houston was held at Pecore Hall in Montrose in 2011 and 2012\, and then moved to the larger Pershing Middle School campus in Bellaire for 2013 and 2014. The festival went on hiatus from 2015-2016 while our nonprofit organization launched exciting new outreach projects\, created additional annual events\, and expanded our fundraising. An even larger venue was also sought out in order to meet the needs of our growing vegan festival\, as well as a fresh new format. We were pleased to officially move to the Stafford Centre Convention Hall in 2017! Now\, we have expanded to an even larger venue for 2019 at Minute Maid Park! \nThis amazing\, diverse\, all-vegan community event is held right here in the nation’s 4th largest city. It’s no wonder\, since Houston is ranked the 4th “Most Veg-friendly City” in the nation as of 2012\, making us the top Texas Veg-friendly city! \nWe are Houston’s original vegan festival! The festival is produced entirely by volunteers from our nonprofit organization. Our popular event features vegan vendors and exhibitors\, family-friendly kids activities\, giveaways and more. VegFest Houston promotes an ethical\, compassionate and truly sustainable world for all. Ours is one of the most diverse vegan festivals in the nation!!! \n\nDid you know that VegFest Houston Vegan Community Festival of Texas was part of the early #VegFest movement? We were the first “VegFest” labeled vegan festival in Texas and our logo is one of those shown in this VegSource article about the history of The VegFest Phenomenon! Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. is honored to have our festivals be part of what eventually became a worldwide VegFest movement.

We’ll be there from 6:30PM until 8:00PM so be sure to drop by and make your voice heard. Register to attend via the ticket link above and your first drink is on us!

SUMMARY:Roy Zimmerman Concert: Potluck Fundraiser for Peace Camp Houston
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do about climate change\, torture\, racism\, xenophobia\, gun violence\, fracking\, Congressional ineptitude\, ignorance\, war and greed?  Write funny songs\, says Roy Zimmerman\, master satirist\, songwriter\, and performer. \nHPJC is bringing Roy Zimmerman back to Houston in a benefit to raise funds for Peace Camp Houston. Plus there’s an optional pot-luck dinner/social before the concert.\n \n“ReZist” is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman’s hilarious\, rhyme-intensive original songs. \n“Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression\,” says Roy\, “because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face\, I’m affirming the real possibility for change.” \nRoy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared stages with Bill Maher\, Robin Williams\, Ellen DeGeneres\, John Oliver\, Kate Clinton and George Carlin.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post. \nHe’s funny\, he’s a great musician\, he’s an excellent performer\, and his in-person performances are outstanding.  What more could you ask for? \nThe concert starts at 7:00 pm\, and there’s also an optional pot luck dinner and social at 6:00 pm — bring some food or drink to share\, if you wish. \nVisit Roy’s web site and check out his music on YouTube for more information about him and his music. If you can’t come\, but would like to help us pay expenses so more children can attend peace camp\, go to the Peace Camp Houston donation form. \nReserve your discount seats now!\nWe’re asking for a contribution of $20 at the door\, or $15 in advance\, but if that’s too much for you\, please let us know. \n\nIf you’d like to purchase tickets with a check\, make it payable to “Houston Peace and Justice Center”\, and indicate “Roy Zimmerman” on the memo line. Please also send us your email so we can add to our updates list! Mail it to HPJC\, PO Box 66234\, Houston TX 77266-6234. Mail early so that we’ll receive the checks at least 2 days before the event.\nBetter still\, reserve/purchase your tickets online\n\nWe’ll also collect additional donations just for this summer’s Peace Camp Houston\, for those who can give more.  We hope to add more weeks of peace camp\, at different locations\, and provide subsidies for more children of lower income families – it all depends on how much funds we can raise. Please give generously!

DESCRIPTION:Texas — come move for mental health with UNRWA USA at the first ever Houston #Gaza5K walk/run on Saturday\, November 17 at Cullen Park! \nIn light of the UNRWA funding crisis and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions\, we’re fundraising to provide emergency assistance\, including employing 25 UNRWA counselors — refugees themselves — to provide psychosocial support to Palestine refugee children and families in the Gaza Strip who suffer from trauma due to repeated Israeli military assaults and the continued blockade. \nSign up at gaza5k.org and start fundraising to make access to mental health care a reality for all Palestine refugee children in the Gaza Strip! Early bird registration is open\, and rates will go up by $15 per registrant starting November 1\, so sign up now! \n– Fundraise $50 and get one official Gaza 5K t-shirt (each individual must fundraise a minimum of $50 beyond the cost of registration to receive their shirt)\n– Fundraise $500 for a beautiful\, classic keffiyeh from the Hirbawi Textile Factory\, the last remaining keffiyeh factory in Palestine. They come complete with a “made in Palestine” tag!\n– Fundraise $1\,000 for your very own piece of Palestine! We’ll plant an olive tree in your honor in a refugee camp or near an UNRWA facility in the West Bank. \n*CMHP is UNRWA’s Community Mental Health Programme. \nLearn more and find all other race details at gaza5k.org

SUMMARY:Guidance for the Health Care Perplexed
DESCRIPTION:We all know what a huge rip off our health care system is.  But aside from just the extortion level pricing\, the system is rigged so well it is nearly impossible for even a prudent and well informed consumer to navigate and avoid nasty billing surprises.  Just a few examples: You make an effort to go to an in-network hospital and receive one or more out-of-network bills from doctors or other hospital staff\, often for astronomical sums of money\, and were given no warning of such.  You receive over a dozen different bills from one hospital stay in our fragmented system\, and they keep you in limbo for months\, sometimes even a year or longer\, after your procedure/discharge\, not knowing if you will receive another unexpected bill.  It is rare that any medical provider will disclose prices for a procedure\, etc. beforehand\, and often will not make clear whether or not it is covered by insurance.   Come to our gathering\, vent your frustrations\, and tell your horror stories\, or those of a family member or friend\, in dealing with the shenanigans of our health care system\, and then lets discuss how we can fight back.

SUMMARY:Health Care and Workplace Issues
DESCRIPTION:Need more incentive to stand up for better treatment in the workplace and worker’s rights on a wide range of issues?  How about the dismal state of affairs in worker treatment and protections being a major contributing factor to poor health\, including public health and safety\, and higher health care costs.  Discuss how chronic\, costly and often serious health conditions (ie: heart disease\, diabetes\, etc)\, as well as injuries (esp. auto accidents and workplace related) are exacerbated and made more common as a result of lack of worker protections\, lack of paid sick and maternity leave\, overwork and poor work/life balance and hostile work environments.
