SUMMARY:Socialist Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:“Does the Working Class Need Its Own Political Party?” \nMost ideological discussion on the working class movement towards socialism pivots around the issue of a revolutionary party. Is a revolutionary party necessary or only a coalition electoral party? What does history tell us about this? Has socialism (working class in full power) ever been built in the absence of such a political party? We will be discussing Marx\, Engels\, and Lenin on the need for and role of a revolutionary party. \nJoin us every other Tuesday at Cafe Express in River Oaks! We are the longest-running progressive reading group in Harris County and would love to have you at our next meet up.

SUMMARY:"If a Tree Falls" Film Screening and Vegan Tamale Sale
DESCRIPTION:June 11 is the International Day of Solidarity with Marius Mason and All Long-Term Anarchist Prisoners! We will be screening If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (2011)\, writing letters and cards of support to anarchist political prisoners\, and selling vegan tamales at a sliding scale to raise money for Marius!\n \nIf A Tree Falls tells the remarkable story of one cell of the Earth Liberation Front\, by focusing on the transformation\nand radicalization of one of its members\, Daniel McGowan. Part coming-of-age tale\, part cops-and-robbers thriller\, the film interweaves a verite chronicle of Daniel on house arrest as he faces life in prison\, with a dramatic recounting of the events that led to his involvement with the group. And along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism\, activism\, and the way we define terrorism. \nChildren are very welcome and Solidarity Houston has a children’s corner with books\, crafts\, and games. \nSolidarity Houston is wheelchair accessible space through the front entrance\, and has one gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathroom (does not have an accessibility bar). The space is not currently scent free. Service animals always welcome\, non-human animal companions are welcome as well. If you have any other accessibility needs or questions\, please email us at houston_abc@riseup.net! \nParking is in the back of the space\, along the train tracks. We recommend you don’t park in the Mi Charro lot\, as they are known to tow people\, but if you need an accessible space to park make sure you don’t park in a marked spot. Bikes can come into the space. The new green line of the metro rail has a stop right in front of the space\, for those using public transportation.

SUMMARY:A Tilted Guide to Being A Defendant: Book Presentation and Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:From Black Lives Matter to Standing Rock to the resistance against the Trump regime\, thousands of people across the country have faced arrest and prosecution in recent years for their political actions and activity. They find the legal system confusing\, alienating\, and isolating\, and the government is often successful at using criminal charges to disrupt\, destroy\, and neutralize radical and revolutionary struggles for liberation. \nJoin us for this presentation and discussion from the Tilted Scales Collective (tiltedscalescollective.org) to talk about how to leverage your goals and values–personal\, political\, and legal–in your court battle\, and how to leverage your court case to strengthen our revolutionary struggles for liberation. By thinking and acting strategically and being in solidarity with each other\, we can turn these terrible situations in movement-building ones! \nThe event is based on the ideas in the recent book A TILTED GUIDE TO BEING A DEFENDANT\, which draws on the wisdom of dozens of people who have weathered the challenges of trials and incarceration\, including many former and current political prisoners/prisoners of war. This event is part of a nationwide tour aiming to help strengthen our movements on all fronts and take away the power of criminal charges. The book will be available for sale at a dicount at the event! \nChildren are very welcome and Solidarity Houston has a children’s corner with books\, crafts\, and games. \nSolidarity Houston is wheelchair accessible space through the front entrance\, and has one gender neutral wheelchair accessible bathroom (does not have an accessibility bar). SUMMARY:Meet filmmaker Regis Tremblay 11:59:30-Thirty Seconds to Midnight
DESCRIPTION:Reception with  Regis Tremblay \nMy new documentary\, Thirty Seconds to Midnight\, is ready and we will show it in Houston\, TX \nThis has been a very long\, three year project that began with my first feature documentary\, The Ghosts of Jeju. It was then that I realized the U.S. plan for full spectrum dominance of the planet. My research and interest since then has focused on the trajectory of Manifest Destiny since the white\, European explorers came to the Americas in the 15th Century. Blessed by the Pope of Rome\, the Doctrine of Discovery gave the illegal immigrants from Europe the right to the land and its resources and permission to kill all of the savages that inhabited those lands. From that time on\, these white\, European\, illegal immigrants\, and later the newly formed United States of America\, continued to massacre millions of Native Americans. Those that were not killed either died of disease\, starvation or were herded onto reservations where they lived in squalor. As the film makes clear\, violence and killing have been part of the American narrative from the very beginning. \nThe United States of America was built on slavery and later the commodification of labor. Eventually\, the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny were applied to the entire world. Since 1798\, the United States has invaded more than 500 countries and murdered tens of millions of innocent people\, stealing their resources and destroying entire civilizations. Just since WWII\, the United States has planned and orchestrated coups\, assassinations\, regime changes\, color revolutions\, drone killings\, and murdered more than 20 million innocent men\, women and children. And the slaughter continues today in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Iraq\, Libya\, Syria\, Yemen\, Somalia and throughout Africa and South America. \nWith the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, America ushered in a new era in human history that has all life on earth on the brink of extinction\, and this is the theme of Thirty Seconds to Midnight. There are only three threats to life on the planet\, and only three. They are\, a nuclear holocaust\, nuclear power that is not safe\, and climate change. As Dr. Helen Caldicott says in the film\, “We are like lemmings walking towards the cliff and worrying about things that don’t matter.” \nSince going to Jeju Island\, I have returned to the Pacific to document the presence and effects of U.S. militarism from Hawaii all the way down to the Marshall Islands. In this past year\, I travelled to Germany\, Ukraine and to Russia because not only is America threatening to choke off China with the Pivot to Asia\, but America has also been threatening Russia since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union with thousands of US/NATO troops\, bases and missiles on Russia’s borders. The threat of nuclear war with these two nuclear-armed countries is greater now than during the Cold War. \nAnd so it is\, America’s destiny has all life on the planet on the very brink of extinction. As Dr. Caldicott wonders at the end of the film\, “Are we an evolutionary aberration designed in an evolutionary sense not to survive? I wonder.”

SUMMARY:Earth Day Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:A Barter Fair provides an opportunity to trade objects and services without using common currency. The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community. Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s). CHILDREN ARE WELCOME! Children are often the best models of how this can work. They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them. Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish. \nNo money will be exchanged for services or goods\, although monetary donations may be made to Live Oak Friends Meeting House for the use of their space. \n  \n

SUMMARY:HPJC 2016 Peacemaker Awards Dinner with Sonia Nazario
DESCRIPTION:Join peace and justice activists from the southeast Texas area in our 2016 celebration of peacemakers. The reservation deadline was Nov. 7\, and the meal counts have already been turned into the hotel\, so no more reservations can be accepted. \nOur national peacemaker and keynote speaker for 2016 is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sonia Nazario\, author of bestseller Enrique’s Journey\, a true story about a young Honduran boy’s search for his mother who left home to find work in the US to pay for food for her starving family. The story is representative of thousands of children who endure similar struggles\, many of whom die while trying to reach their mothers. Read Nazario’s LA Times articles that led to her Pulitzer Prize.  Nazario’s latest article in the NY Times in English or en Español. \nOur local peacemaker awardees\, who will also tell us about their activities\, are: \n\nAshton Woods is an activist in the Black Lives Matter and SGL/GLBT rights movements\, and works tirelessly for equality and to end racism and gender discrimination.  He describes himself as a gay\, atheist\, HIV-positive and “unapologetically black” man who believes that justice must be intersectional.  While none of these things completely define Woods\, they highlight the multiple dimensions that help define his justice work.\nJackie Young\, executive director of Texas Health and Environment Alliance and leader of the San Jacinto River Coalition. See her recent Houston Chronicle op-ed on the San Jacinto waste pits\, a Texans Together feature article about her\, and a Houston Press article about her and her family’s struggle with the effects of the river’s waste pits\, which are now among the top Superfund sites in the US. Also see the Houston Chronicle’s Nick Anderson editorial cartoon series on Jackie and the waste pits: part 1\, part 2\nBren Hardt\, long-time peace activist with Fellowship of Reconciliation\, Creating a Culture of Peace\, Board of Church and Society – Peace with Justice Program of the United Methodist Church\, and Houston Non-Violent Communication (NVC). Bren has initiated and organized training and informational programs for other activist to develop the skills and understanding in ourselves that we need to build a peaceful and just world.\n\nA special recognition will also given to Casa Juan Diego\, that has served immigrants and the poor in Houston for many years. \nLocation\, parking\, How to get there: \nThe festivities will be at the Hilton Hotel on the campus of the University of Houston. Check-in\, with a cash bar and social hour for everyone attending the dinner\, is from 6-7 pm. The dinner and program start at 7 pm. Parking is available in the garage under the UH Hilton Hotel – note that there are TWO parking levels there\, so if the first is full\, go down to the lower level.  There is a UH football game in the afternoon of the dinner\, and fans may be leaving it as people arrive for our dinner\, so allow for some extra time due to traffic. We will have discount parking passes for the UH Hilton garage for $5\, at the dinner check-in area. There is also parking across the street in the UH Welcome Center parking garage (just east of the hotel)\, but it may cost as much as the discounted Hilton garage tickets. \nIt’s also easy to ride Metrorail’s Purple Line to the University of Houston\, and then you won’t have to worry about parking at all. It runs every 12 minutes in both directions on Saturday. The UH South/University Oaks stop is closest to the UH Hilton. \n Map and directions \nAdditional donations not only support the work of HPJC to promote peace and justice\, but also allow us to invite activists of slender means who would not otherwise be able to attend. If you can’t come\, you may join or donate to HPJC instead\, so support our work for peace and justice. Wally James of KPFT plans to record Sonia Nazario’s talk\, and at least that part of our program may be broadcast later on his show\, the Progressive Forum\, Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 pm.

SUMMARY:Film: Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis \nIntroduced by filmmaker Kathleen Dowdey \n\n\n\n\n\nFree admission \nA panel discussion follows the screening \nIn 1965\, the historic Selma March known as Bloody Sunday was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. John Lewis—now a U.S. Congressman\, then a young student—co-led hundreds of peaceful marchers seeking voting rights for African Americans in the South. When they came face to face with a wall of Alabama state troopers\, Lewis took a steadfast\, nonviolent stand and encouraged his followers to do the same. Seventy-six-year-old Lewis is a respected legislator and elder statesman who continues to practice nonviolence in his determined fight for justice. The film is a riveting portrayal of Lewis’s personal journey of courage\, searing disappointments\, and hard-won triumphs. Over the decades—including on the House floor this past June—he inspires others to “get in the way.” \nAbout the Speaker\nKathleen Dowdey’s unique portrayal of documentary subjects is a refreshing fusion of personalized voice\, layered observations and revelatory moments. She is a storyteller and award-winning filmmakter attracted to people deeply immersed in their cultures\, driven by their history\, thrust into change and struggling to adapt. Her exceptional artistry in Get in the Way has its roots in her early work\, including A Celtic Trilogy\, a documentary exploration of the renaissance of identity in the Celtic nations\, Blue Heaven a narrative feature that exposes the hidden traumas of domestic violence and Dawn’s Early Light\, a portrait of newspaper editor Ralph McGill\, a segregationist-turned-advocate of tolerance in a deeply polarized South. As a television writer\, director and producer\, Dowdey’s work is broadcast on networks including CBS/Paramount\, NBC\, PBS\, the History Channel\, Discovery\, Turner Broadcasting and others. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America\, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the International Documentary Association.

SUMMARY:Film: Sonita
DESCRIPTION:Sonita \n\n\n\n\n\nWinning two awards at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival\, Sonita tells the inspiring story of Sonita Alizadeh\, an 18-year-old Afghan refugee in Iran\, who thinks of Michael Jackson and Rihanna as her spiritual parents and dreams of becoming a big-name rapper. Currently her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran shelter\, but her family has a very different future planned for Sonita: as a bride worth $9\,000. Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami poignantly shifts from observer to participant altering expectations\, as Sonita’s story unfolds. An unforgettable coming-of-age tale that positions a free-spirited young woman at odds with the restrictions of a traditional society.

SUMMARY:RFK: A Portrait of Robert F. Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:At Main Street Theater we are currently running 2 plays that have\, sadly\, turned out to be incredibly timely with all that seems to be falling apart in our world: \nRFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy and Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-A** Wit of Molly Ivins.  (The shows run in repertory\, alternating days) through August 14. \n  \n“When we decided to mount these two shows about important individuals in American political life\, we didn’t know just how timely and timeless their stories would be\,” says Main Street Theater Founder and Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden.  “Of course\, anyone who follows Texas Politics knows that nothing has changed since Molly Ivins covered it with such wit and insight during her time with the Texas Observer\, and her commentary is just as sharp and entertaining as ever.  We chose to pair Molly’s story with Bobby Kennedy’s thinking that it would resonate with the current Presidential Election\, little knowing that recent national events would put his thoughts about civil rights into such clear and powerful perspective.  Both these plays – and the individuals who inspired them – are great reminders of the impact of civic passion combined with eloquence and intelligence.” \nAbout RFK: A Portrait of Robert F. Kennedy \nBy late summer\, 1964\, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was a deeply wounded man.  Still in shock and consumed with grief and guilt over the assassination of his older brother\, he was at a critical juncture in his life.  The 1964 presidential election was approaching\, and President Johnson\, who had been dangling the possibility of the vice-presidency to RFK\, finally called Kennedy over to the White House to inform him of his decision.  The result of that meeting and the subsequent direction for the next\, and last\, four years of his life are the focus of RFK: A Portrait of Robert Kennedy.   “Robert F Kennedy has always been a political hero of mine\,” says actor Joel Sandel who plays the role.  “However\, it wasn’t until I started digging into his personal history\, in preparation for this play\, that I was struck by what a profoundly good man he was.  His very personal rhetoric spoke to the average citizen in a way that touched the very soul of the nation.  He was also one of the rare political figures who had the ability to experience genuine ‘heart changes’ in the way he saw the world and viewed his responsibility as a citizen of the U.S. and of the world.”

Today Democracy Now! is the largest public media collaboration in the US\, broadcasting on over 1400 public television and radio stations around the world\, with millions accessing it online at democracynow.org. Now Amy\, along with her journalist brother\, David and co-author Denis Moynihan\, share stories of the heroes—the whistleblowers\, the organizers\, the protesters—who have brought about remarkable change. \nThis important book looks back over the past two decades of Democracy Now!and the powerful movements and charismatic leaders who are re-shaping our world. Goodman takes the reader along as she goes to where the silence is\, bringing out voices from the streets of Ferguson\, to Staten Island\, Wall Street\, South Carolina to East Timor—and other places where people are rising up to demand justice. Democracy Now! is the modern day underground railroad of information\, bringing stories from the grassroots to a global audience.

SUMMARY:Roy Zimmerman Concert - Potluck - Fundraiser for Peace Camp Houston
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do about climate change\, torture\, racism\, gun violence\, fracking\, Congressional ineptitude\, ignorance\, war and greed?  Write funny songs\, says Roy Zimmerman \, master satirist\, songwriter\, and performer. \nHPJC is bringing Roy Zimmerman back to Houston in a benefit to raise funds for Peace Camp Houston. In 14 albums over 20 years\, Roy has brought the sting of satire and parody to the struggle for peace and social justice. \nRoy says\, “I’m calling the election year tour “This Machine\,” a reference to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to be sure\, but also an acknowledgement that songwriting does good work in the world.  Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression\, because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face\, I’m affirming the real possibility of change.” \nHe makes fun of right wing politicians\, hypocrites\, war profiteers\, large multinational corporations\, religious bigots\, and hate-mongers\, while entertaining you with stories and music. \nHis songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared stages with Bill Maher\, John Oliver\, Ellen DeGeneres\, Kate Clinton and George Carlin.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post. \nHe’s funny\, he’s a great musician\, he’s an excellent performer\, and his in-person performances are outstanding.  What more could you ask for? \nThe concert starts at 7:30 pm\, but there’s also an optional pot luck dinner at 6:30 pm — bring some food or drink to share\, if you wish. \nVisit Roy’s web site and check out his music on YouTube for more information about him and his music. \nRoy Zimmerman on YouTube:\n\n“The Big Republican Tent“\n“My Vote\, My Voice\, My Right“\n“To Be a Liberal“\n“Creation Science 101”\n“Hope\, Struggle and Change”\n“The Faucet’s on Fire!”\n“SCROTUS”\n\nReserve your discount seats now!\nWe’re asking for a contribution of $20 at the door\, or $15 in advance\, but if that’s too much for you\, please let us know. Reserve your tickets today! \nWe’ll also collect additional donations just for this summer’s Peace Camp Houston\, for those who can give more.  We hope to add additional weeks of peace camp\, at different locations\, and provide subsidies for more children of lower income families – it all depends on how much funds we can raise. \nIf you can’t come\, but would like to help us pay expenses so more children can attend peace camp\, go to the Peace Camp Houston donation form. \nRoy usually brings CD’s to sell for those who want more of his music.  (Generally many people do!) \nFor more information about Roy and his music\, go to http://www.royzimmerman.com or search for “Roy Zimmerman” on YouTube.
