DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will present Dialogue: Racism\, a two-day intensive workshop that educates participants about racism and facilitates the process by which they can begin to counter the effects of racism on their lives\, empowering them to interrupt the cycle of racist attitudes. The workshop provides a safe\, respectful and loving atmosphere for a diverse group of people to learn new information\, share experiences\, dispel fears and guilt\, and get to know each another.\n\n\n\nDialogue: Racism will be on two consecutive Saturdays\, September 28 & October 5\, 2019 from 9 AM to 4:30 PM at 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston\, TX 77004.  The event is free and open to the public. AND learn how to TEACH Peace Literacy.\nBe prepared for a hands-on learning experience for developing curriculum and activities that will provide skills for and resiliency in future peacemakers.\nThis is a two-day event. To get the most out of the training\, please plan to attend both days. Registration covers both days and includes lunches. \nLocation: \nThe Dominican Center for Spirituality \n6501 Almeda Road\, Houston\, TX 77021 \nDate and Time: \nSaturday\, March 2 Check in begins at 8:30 am. The day’s program ends at 3 PM. \nSunday\, March 3 The training reconvenes at 12:30 PM and ends at 3:30 PM. \nWorkshop Registration: \nSign up HERE    $40 registration fee is suggested\, but flexible pricing and scholarships are available to those of slim means! \nPaul K. Chappell\, our workshop leader\, is\, surprisingly\, a West Point graduate\, Iraq War veteran\, and former army captain. Along this unusual path\, he became convinced that people need to be as well trained in waging peace as soldiers are in waging war.  Chappell is the Peace Literacy Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and the author of six books\, most recently Soldiers of Peace. DESCRIPTION:Nervous about biking in Houston? Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church and Bike Houston invite you to a free Community Bike Safety Course where you’ll gain the confidence to cycle safely around town. The course begins with 90 minutes of classroom instruction at Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church\, followed by 90 minutes of drills in Rice University parking lot and then a leisurely ride around the neighborhood to practice our skills on the road. DESCRIPTION:In correlation with the exhibition\, “The Faces of Syrian Refugees\,” Holocaust Museum Houston will host a one-day education workshop for teachers in the Greater Houston area. In efforts to offer resources and information on refugee resettlement and awareness\, refugee advocacy groups will work in conjunction with the HMH Education Department to provide activities\, literature\, and lessons that teachers can take back to their classrooms. \nThis workshop is open to educators who work directly with refugee students\, educators learning more about the refugee experience\, and/or how students can become active advocates. \nTeachers from the K-5\, 6-12\, university and extracurricular programs (music\, art\, etc.) are encouraged to participate. The fee for this program is $25 per person\, which includes workshop materials and lunch. SUMMARY:Houston Rapid Response Network Training
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Rapid Response Network is a group of people on-call to show up for people and families impacted by current anti-immigration laws. The training will review actions to help counteract deportation and the splitting up of families in our state. The training also covers how documented allies can play both small and large roles in the network and how all of us together can show up in solidarity with the undocumented and migrant people in our community.
