SUMMARY:【Online Event】Documentary Screening: Understanding Realities of Armed Conflict Resolution
DESCRIPTION:With all news reports these days about conflicts and refugee crises around the world\, have you wondered if there is something you can do?\nAccept International has been working for more than 15 years in conflict-affected countries and regions\, including Somalia and Yemen. Through supporting young people engaged in armed conflict to lay down their arms and rebuild their lives as agents of peace\, we have been advancing efforts toward sustaining peace.\n\nWe have held online events to share details about our activities\, but it has been difficult to tell concrete images about the armed conflict occurring around the world. Therefore\, to give you a more detailed sense of the reality on the ground where we work\, we have organized an event featuring short documentary films.\n\nAt this event\, along with a brief explanation of the issues we are addressing and our approach\, we will watch a short documentary film\, “Why does the Japanese man engage them?”\, directed and filmed by Yuta Saito\, who worked alongside our organization’s executive director\, Dr. Yosuke Nagai in Somalia for two and a half years.\n\nFollowing the screening\, we will also introduce our recent activities\, including efforts to establish international norms for the protection and empowerment of youth engaged in armed conflict.\n\nWe hope you will join us in experiencing the reality of the situation through this film and taking the time to consider conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join an online discussion series built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with an in-person screening of the film “A Class Apart” on Tuesday\, October 11\, 2022\, 6:00  to 8:00 PM (CDT) 3412 Crawford Street\, Houston 77004. Built around the landmark 1954 legal case Hernández v. From the the Gulf South to Puerto Rico Stories of Survival will bring community together to learn\, deepen connections\, and share stories about community-centered solutions and strategies for survival in the face of climate change. Coinciding with observances of the devastating disasters during hurricane season that continually impact our home places\, the tour will include FREE solar-powered “Cine Solar” film screenings\, community dinners\, storytelling\, collective visioning\, and other unique artistic and cultural offerings. \nStories of Survival is being hosted by a collaborative of grassroots groups\, organizers\, media-makers\, artists and activists acting at the frontlines of climate\, including Another Gulf Is Possible Collaborative\, Bridge The Gulf\, Defend Puerto Rico\, Sierra Club\, Texas Housers\, West Street Recovery\, and Working Films\, among others. \nStories of Survival will close out the Hurricane Harvey Peoples Tribunal\, a two day event on August 24th and 25th\, in which residents\, community leaders\, and experts will testify and imagine creative solutions that could move Houston toward becoming more resilient to future climate disasters. SUMMARY:Progressive Movie Night: "The Battle of Algiers"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Houston Communist Party for our monthly Progressive Movie Night! \n“The Battle of Algiers” is a 1966 Italian-Algerian historical war film co-written and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo and starring Jean Martin and Saadi Yacef. It is based on events during the Algerian War (1954–62) against the French government in North Africa; the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers\, the capital of Algeria. It was shot on location and the film’s score was composed by Ennio Morricone. The film\, which was shot in a Roberto Rossellini-inspired newsreel style—in black and white with documentary-type editing—is often associated with Italian neorealism cinema. \nThe film has been critically celebrated and often taken\, by insurgent groups and states alike\, as an important commentary on urban guerrilla warfare. It occupies the 48th place on the Critics’ Top 250 Films of the 2012 Sight & Sound poll as well as 120th place on Empire magazine’s list of the 500 greatest movies of all time. \nAlgeria gained independence from the French\, a matter which Pontecorvo portrays in the film’s epilogue. The film concentrates on the years between 1954 and 1957 when the guerrilla fighters regrouped and expanded into the Casbah\, the citadel of Algiers\, which was met by French paratroopers attempting to regain territory. The highly dramatic film is about the organization of a guerrilla movement and the illegal methods used by the colonial power to contain it. \nA subject of socio-political controversy\, the film was not screened for five years in France\, where it was later released in 1971. DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism will celebrate Asian-Asian Pacific Islander Month with a screening of “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” on Wednesday\, May 9\, 2018 from 7 to 9 PM. The 2016 documentary film by Steve James relates the story of Abacus Federal Savings Bank\,a family-owned community bank located in Manhattan’s Chinatown in New York City. Because it was deemed “small enough to jail” rather than “too big to fail”\,Abacus became the only financial institution to actually face criminal charges following the subprime mortgage crisis. The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival where it was firstrunner-up for the People’s Choice Award. SUMMARY:The 25th Houston Iranian Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 25th anniversary of this festival\, established by The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston and Rice Cinema. Screenings will take place at both venues and at The Asia Society Texas Center. Following last year’s screening of Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman\, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film\, this year’s selections include Breath\, Iran’s 2017 Oscar submission. It is one of several narratives by and about young Iranian women\, and\, like Tehran Taboo\, features the innovative use of animation. 24 Frames\, the mesmerizing\, experimental last film by the internationally celebrated Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) will be shown at both the Museum and Rice Cinema. \nThe film scholar\, Dr. Hamid Naficy\, Professor of Radio-Television-Film and the Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani Professor in Communication at Northwestern University\, gives a lecture at Rice Cinema on January 31. Dr. Naficy was on the Rice faculty when this festival was founded \nFestival ticket prices apply! General admission is $10.
