DESCRIPTION:You are invited to go on the Journey of the Universe in October\, with three opportunities to be awe-struck by this Emmy-award winning documentary which narrates the 14 billion year story of the universe’s development in a single hour. The film tells this story in a way that is accessible to everyone: drawing on astronomy and physics to explain the emergence of galaxies and stars\, geology and chemistry to understand the formation of Earth\, biology and botany to trace life’s evolution\, and anthropology and history to see the rise of humans. Journey weaves science and humanities in a new way that allows for a comprehensive sense of awe and wonder to arise. This approach expands the human perspective to one that values life’s complexity and sees the role of humans as critical to the further flourishing of the Earth community. An open facilitated discussion will follow each film screening.

This month our feature film will be Sergei Eisenstein’s classic\, “Battleship Potemkin”. \nWhen they are fed rancid meat\, the sailors on the Potemkin revolt against their harsh conditions. Led by Vakulinchuk (Aleksandr Antonov)\, the sailors kill the officers of the ship to gain their freedom. Vakulinchuk is also killed\, and the people of Odessa honor him as a symbol of revolution. Tsarist soldiers arrive and massacre the civilians to quell the uprising. A squadron of ships is sent to overthrow the Potemkin\, but the ships side with the revolt and refuse to attack. \nJoin us for this fantastic film! SUMMARY:On The Beach (1959 Movie)
DESCRIPTION:On the Beach is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic science fiction drama film from United Artists\, produced and directed by Stanley Kramer\, that stars Gregory Peck\, Ava Gardner\, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.[2] This black-and-white film is based on Nevil Shute‘s 1957 novel of the same name depicting the aftermath of a nuclear war.[3] Unlike the novel\, no blame is placed on whoever started the war; it is hinted in the film that the threat of annihilation may have arisen from an accident or misjudgment. \nIn early 1964\, in the months following World War III\, the conflict has devastated the Northern Hemisphere\, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout\, killing all life there. Air currents are slowly carrying the fallout south; the only areas still habitable are in the far reaches of the Southern Hemisphere. \nFrom Australia\, survivors detect an incomprehensible Morse code signal coming from the West Coast of the United States. The last American nuclear submarine\, USS Sawfish\, under Royal Australian Navy command\, is ordered to sail north to the United States to attempt to make contact with the sender of the Morse signal. The submarine is commanded by Captain Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck)\, who must leave his new friend\, the alcoholic Moira Davidson (Ava Gardner). \nThe Australian government arranges for its citizens to receive suicide pills or prepared injections so they may end things quickly before there is prolonged suffering from radiation sickness. An Australian naval officer\, Peter Holmes (Anthony Perkins) and his wife\, Mary\, who is in denial about the impending disaster\, have a baby daughter. Assigned to travel with the American sub for several weeks\, Peter tries to explain to Mary how to euthanize their baby and then kill herself in case he is not yet home when the end comes; Mary reacts very emotionally to the prospect of killing her daughter and herself. \nOne scientist’s theory is that the radiation level near the Arctic Ocean could be lower than that found in the mid-Northern Hemisphere\, which might indicate the radiation could disperse before reaching the Southern Hemisphere. The theory is to be explored along with the submarine’s main mission. DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Healing of Racism presents “Race: The Power of an Illusion\,” a powerful three-part documentary series that explores the phenomenon we call Race.  Each weekly session begins with the screening of one of the three episodes of the series\, originally aired by PBS in 2003.  Each week’s screening will be followed by a dialogue about the ideas presented in the film.  “Race – The Power of an Illusion” questions the very idea of race as biology\, suggesting that a belief in race is no more sound than believing that the sun revolves around the earth.  \n \nThe series will be held at the Houston Baha’i Center\, 2419 Fannin Street\, Houston 77004.  The dates are as follows:\n \nEpisode 1\,  August 2 — 7-9 PM:  “The Difference Between Us” examines the contemporary science – including genetics – that challenges our common sense assumptions that human beings can be bundled into three or four fundamentally different groups according to their physical traits.\n \n\nEpisode 2\,  August 9 – 7-9 PM:  “The Story We Tell” uncovers the roots of the race concept in North America\, the 19th century science that legitimized it\, and how it came to be held so fiercely in the western imagination. The episode is an eye-opening tale of how race served to rationalize\, even justify\, American social inequalities as “natural.” \nEpisode 3\,  August 16 – 7-9 PM:  “The House We Live In” asks\, if race is not biology\, what is it? This episode uncovers how race resides not in nature but in politics\, economics and culture. It reveals how our social institutions “make” race by disproportionately channeling resources\, power\, status and wealth to white people. \nThis series is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:  \nIT’S no secret that Beijing has been building up its military might in the South China Sea. \nBut there’s another superpower making an even bigger play to stay top dog and many of us wouldn’t event realize. The United States has surrounded China with 400 military bases in an almost perfect “noose”. \n  \nIn a new documentary set to air on Sunday night\, The Coming war on China\, award-winning journalist and filmmaker John Pilger challenges the notion of the world’s newest\, biggest trading nation as an enemy.  He also reveals the build-up to war taking place right on Beijing’s doorstep. \nFilmed over two years in the Marshall Islands\, Japan\, Korea\, China and the US\, Pilger highlights America’s secret history in the region. \n  \nThe eye-opening documentary reveals some surprising findings including that the people of the Marshall Islands were used as nuclear guinea pigs under the top secret “Project 4.1”. \nPilger also travels to Japan and Korea where he speaks to and observes people resisting the US expansion. \n  \nHe visits the Japanese island of Okinawa where 32 US bases are located and speaks to those who are challenging the world’s biggest military power. \nOn the Korean island of Jeju\, a world heritage site\, he witnesses farmers\, villagers\, priests and supporters who block gates to a base only to be removed every day. \nIn an interview with news.com.au ahead of the film going to air\, Pilger said he wanted to “help people make sense of a critical subject that is seldom more than a series of sound-bites.” \n“I say critical\, because a strange and dangerous atmosphere currently separates the world’s greatest military power\, the United States\, and a country that will almost certainly become the world’s greatest economic power\, China\,” he said. \n  \n“In the past few years\, the provocations\, threats\, contradictions and confusion have caused the kind of mistrust that make war by misunderstanding or by mistake or accident a real possibility. And both the US and China are nuclear-armed.” \nPilger also raises questions over whether it’s Beijing we should really be worried about. \n“China is surrounded by 400 US military bases in what one strategist describes as a ‘noose’\,” he said. \n“Many of these bases are on China’s doorstep\, armed with missiles\, naval battle groups\, nuclear bombers\, drones. US naval warships patrol just outside Chinese waters.” \nWhile the US has almost 1000 foreign bases\, China has just one which Pilger said was smaller and did not threaten California. \n  \n  \n“ \n

DESCRIPTION:Reception with  Regis Tremblay \nMy new documentary\, Thirty Seconds to Midnight\, is ready and we will show it in Houston\, TX \nThis has been a very long\, three year project that began with my first feature documentary\, The Ghosts of Jeju. It was then that I realized the U.S. plan for full spectrum dominance of the planet. My research and interest since then has focused on the trajectory of Manifest Destiny since the white\, European explorers came to the Americas in the 15th Century. Blessed by the Pope of Rome\, the Doctrine of Discovery gave the illegal immigrants from Europe the right to the land and its resources and permission to kill all of the savages that inhabited those lands. From that time on\, these white\, European\, illegal immigrants\, and later the newly formed United States of America\, continued to massacre millions of Native Americans. Those that were not killed either died of disease\, starvation or were herded onto reservations where they lived in squalor. As the film makes clear\, violence and killing have been part of the American narrative from the very beginning. \nThe United States of America was built on slavery and later the commodification of labor. Eventually\, the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny were applied to the entire world. Since 1798\, the United States has invaded more than 500 countries and murdered tens of millions of innocent people\, stealing their resources and destroying entire civilizations. Just since WWII\, the United States has planned and orchestrated coups\, assassinations\, regime changes\, color revolutions\, drone killings\, and murdered more than 20 million innocent men\, women and children. And the slaughter continues today in Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, Iraq\, Libya\, Syria\, Yemen\, Somalia and throughout Africa and South America. \nWith the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, America ushered in a new era in human history that has all life on earth on the brink of extinction\, and this is the theme of Thirty Seconds to Midnight. There are only three threats to life on the planet\, and only three. They are\, a nuclear holocaust\, nuclear power that is not safe\, and climate change. As Dr. Helen Caldicott says in the film\, “We are like lemmings walking towards the cliff and worrying about things that don’t matter.” \nSince going to Jeju Island\, I have returned to the Pacific to document the presence and effects of U.S. militarism from Hawaii all the way down to the Marshall Islands. In this past year\, I travelled to Germany\, Ukraine and to Russia because not only is America threatening to choke off China with the Pivot to Asia\, but America has also been threatening Russia since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union with thousands of US/NATO troops\, bases and missiles on Russia’s borders. The threat of nuclear war with these two nuclear-armed countries is greater now than during the Cold War. \nAnd so it is\, America’s destiny has all life on the planet on the very brink of extinction. As Dr. Caldicott wonders at the end of the film\, “Are we an evolutionary aberration designed in an evolutionary sense not to survive? I wonder.”

DESCRIPTION:The 1982 murder of Vincent Chin\, a 27-year-old Chinese American\, marked the birth of the Asian American civil rights movement.  When Chin’s killers\, two white autoworkers\, got off with a $3\,000 fine and probation\, Asian Americans throughout the United States were outraged. Their protests gave rise to a pan-Asian identity and solidarity that hadn’t existed before\, as well as a broadening of federal civil rights protection.\n \nIn commemoration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, the Center for the Healing of Racism will screen the documentary “Vincent Who?” on Thursday\, May 18\, 2017 from 7 to 9 PM.  The film will be followed by a dialogue.  Location: 3412 Crawford Street (at Holman)\, Houston\, TX 77004. Lia covers attempts by aware Israelis to educate their fellow Israelis. She follows the transformation of Israeli veterans trying to uncover their denial of the war that changed the region forever. Tarachansky then turns the camera on herself and travels back to her settlement where that historical erasure gave birth to a new generation\, blind and isolated from its surroundings.
