SUMMARY:Earth and Soul book discussion group
DESCRIPTION:Facing directly into the devastation of climate chaos and biodiversity loss\, Earth and Soul takes readers on a soul journey through grief and loss to also claim the beauty\, joy and possibilities available when we reconnect with Earth. As we follow the author’s compelling personal experiences and engagingly lyrical stories of whales\, cedars\, sparrows\, and more\, we see the necessity and urgency of learning from the wisdom of our kin in the natural world. \n\n\n\nWriting at the intersection of spirituality\, ecology\, and story\, the book charts a course for living deeply connected to Earth in ways that are both vitally important for and uniquely suited to these times. Even now when the world as we once knew it is ending and a new story lies beyond what we can envision\, we hold the potential to lay stepping stones toward a diverse and vibrant world of oneness and mutual flourishing. \n\n\n\nJoin a virtual small group to read and discuss this thought-provoking and inspirational book each week during the Season of Creation (observed by Christians from Sept. 1 through Oct. 4). If you can’t attend every week\, attend as you are able. Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions. \n\n\n\nRegister for Earth and Soul book discussion group on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1506035987179.   \n\n\n\nContact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Rothko Concert for Peace 2025
DESCRIPTION:Are you having trouble quieting the noise around you? Step into a morning of music and poetry that invites stillness\, reflection\, and peace\,\n\nJoin us for a contemplative morning of music and poetry\, presented in collaboration with Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) Houston. This special gathering will weave together the rich traditions of Indian classical music and the powerful voices of local poets\, offering a space for reflection\, connection\, and peace.\n\nJoin us for this moving celebration of peace\, where music and poetry converge to honor the spirit of the day.\n\nThe program will feature the internationally acclaimed Aditya Prakash Ensemble\, bringing the depth and beauty of Karnatik music—a South Indian tradition rooted in the intricate interplay of Raga (melody)\, Tala (rhythm)\, and Sahitya (lyrics). With Aditya Prakash on vocals\, Sruti Sarathy on violin\, and Rohan Krishnamurthy on mridangam\, the ensemble will share a dynamic blend of traditional repertoire\, contemporary interpretations\, and spontaneous improvisations—an experience both timeless and rare in Karnatik performance.\n\nAdding to this atmosphere of peace and creativity\, we will also hear original poetry from Houston Poet Laureate Reyes Ramirez and young voices from The Fay School\, whose words will invite us to reflect on unity\, harmony\, and hope.\n\nPay what you can\, $15 – $25\n\nFor more information and to reserve seats\, see https://rothkochapel.org/experience/events/register/2619

SUMMARY:Living the Change
DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions must come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 8%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal.   \n\n\n\nParticipants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money. The course was developed in response to the Walk on Earth Gently multifaith statement\, inspired by religious teachings to turn away from consumerism & to seek balanced relationships with all people and the planet. \n\n\n\nWalk on Earth Gently invites you into a journey of Living the Change that the world needs. This program will work individually with participants\, on dates and times that work for both them and the facilitator.  Those already far along on their carbon footprint reduction journey may only need a few sessions with the facilitator to complete their 50% carbon footprint reduction plan\, whereas others may need more sessions.  Accept the Walk on Earth Gently invitation and commit to a sustainable lifestyle.   \n\n\n\nRegister for this course on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1507561550179. Meeting dates and times are individually scheduled.  For more information\, please contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com.

Bring your questions and between Sophy and SUN’s great Help Desk\, we will help take down the barriers to going solar. Already have solar? Thank you! Sophy will share how to help SUN advocate for our solar rights. Please register for this talk on https://www.mobilize.us/solarunitedneighbors/event/830764/. \nWelcoming the Energy Transition: Nan Hildreth will provide citizens with keen insights and statistical data to elucidate the energy revolution that we are in the midst of\, right now\, even though few have noticed it. “We must recognize it and pursue it swiftly and wholeheartedly to end the climate crisis\,” Nan says. This workshop will display how clean energy has become the cheapest source of energy and is doubling every three years. 95% of new electricity generation in 2024 was solar\, wind\, or battery-supplied from clean energy. By 2050\, humanity can expect to accomplish twice as much with only a fraction of current emissions. Fossil fuels waste 2/3 of the energy created. Clean energy adoption is as unstoppable as was the Industrial Revolution. Yet some are trying to slow it down. \nJoin us for a fun day of triumph to celebrate the success of widespread renewable energy adoption and learn how you can advocate for change! Register for the Sun Day event\, for planning purposes\, at: https://actionnetwork.org/events/sun-day-houston \nAbout TH!RD ACT\nPrimary sponsor of Sun Day is TH!RD ACT (https://thirdact.org/)\, a national nonprofit organization of citizens over age 60\, working together to build a powerful elder-led movement to safeguard our climate and protect democracy for future generations.
