SUMMARY:Living the Change
DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions must come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 10%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal.   \n\n\n\nParticipants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money. The course was developed in response to the Walk on Earth Gently multifaith statement\, inspired by religious teachings to turn away from consumerism & to seek balanced relationships with all people and the planet. Walk on Earth Gently invites you into a journey of Living the Change that the world needs. SUMMARY:Saving Water While Saving Souls: Water Conservation at Houses of Worship
DESCRIPTION:Houses of worship have long been in the business of renewal. As it turns out\, they can also lead by example at renewing and saving our water resources.  \n\n\n\nAcross traditions and denominations\, faith communities can embrace One Water thinking—the idea that all water has value and should be managed holistically\, whether it falls from the sky\, flows from a faucet\, or enters a drain.  \n\n\n\nXeriscaping replaces thirsty turf with native plants that thrive on faith\, sunshine\, and minimal irrigation. Rainwater harvesting systems capture rooftop blessings and store them for landscape use or even indoor nonpotable and potable use. Even air conditioners can join the congregation! AC condensate harvesting collects the steady drip of distilled water that would otherwise disappear into the storm drain. Inside\, conservation measures such as efficient fixtures and leak detection quietly trim consumption without disrupting services (of any kind). Graywater reuse systems redirect gently used water from sinks to irrigate grounds or reuse indoors for non-potable purposes. Atmospheric water generation can even pull moisture directly from the air: loaves and fishes\, but for humidity.  \n\n\n\nFor ecclesiastical campuses ready to go further\, on-site blackwater treatment and reuse systems close the loop\, safely recycling wastewater for nonpotable uses. The result is resilience\, lower operating costs\, and an example of environmental care in action. In the end\, saving water is less about sacrifice and more about intention. SUMMARY:The Preserve - A Nature Based Solution
DESCRIPTION:Join Karla Klay\, Executive Director of Artist Boat to hear about their largest project and their clearest nature-based solution: the Coastal Heritage Preserve on West Galveston Island.\n\nGalveston Island sits in the Galveston Bay Estuary\, facing the Gulf of Mexico. Bayside wetlands improve water quality\, support fisheries\, and buffer storms. Coastal prairies absorb floodwaters and sequester carbon. Dunes and beaches guard against erosion from a high-energy coast. These habitats are in steep decline under pressure from development\, sea-level rise\, erosion\, and subsidence. Protecting land before it’s fragmented is the most cost-effective\, durable intervention we have. Since 2010\, with partners across agencies and the community\, Artist Boat has assembled a 1\,039-acre sanctuary with a goal of 1\,400 acres — a living laboratory for resilience. Thus far\, $24M+ has been secured through 14 transactions to make the vision real. With hope\, Artist Boat is striving to conserve the next 204 acres. DESCRIPTION:With all news reports these days about conflicts and refugee crises around the world\, have you wondered if there is something you can do?\nAccept International has been working for more than 15 years in conflict-affected countries and regions\, including Somalia and Yemen. Through supporting young people engaged in armed conflict to lay down their arms and rebuild their lives as agents of peace\, we have been advancing efforts toward sustaining peace.\n\nWe have held online events to share details about our activities\, but it has been difficult to tell concrete images about the armed conflict occurring around the world. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam\, protect civil rights\, promote justice\, and empower American Muslims. \n\n\n\nCAIR works on Ensuring Justice and Equality — Safeguarding the rights and dignity of our community. Stand with us in ensuring justice and equality by reporting any civil rights violations or discrimination. \n\n\n\nCAIR-Houston\, along with HPJC and other civil rights organizations in our area\, was a co-sponsor of a civil rights conference here in 2014. HPJC was glad to work with CAIR then and we developed a very good working relationship. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas is a nonprofit civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting justice and mutual understanding. As part of the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization\, the Houston Chapter operates alongside other Texas affiliates in Austin\, Dallas\, and San Antonio. Through its grassroots efforts\, the chapter works to protect civil rights\, address discrimination\, and empower American Muslims to actively participate in political and social activism. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas promotes a positive image of Islam and Muslims through media relations\, government affairs\, education\, and advocacy. Its work includes challenging negative portrayals of Islam\, advocating for Muslim concerns in legislative spaces\, and addressing Islamophobia. The chapter’s civil rights department provides legal assistance to individuals facing discrimination or hate crimes. At the same time\, its media and government affairs teams engage with journalists and policymakers to ensure balanced representation and community participation. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas also focuses on community empowerment and youth development. It organizes voter registration drives\, fosters interfaith dialogue\, and supports leadership programs to equip American Muslim youth with the tools to engage in civic and political life. In 2015\, members of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church became aware of the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in our area. Forming a task force\, they created a 501(c)(3) corporation\, found a strip center location\, and began a homeless ministry. 1960 Hope Center opened its doors on August 29\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe ministry quickly grew with support from more than 20 churches. Several hundred made significant strides in overcoming addictions\, acquiring jobs\, and finding affordable housing. In August 2019\, we became Hope Center Houston and acquired a new facility\, allowing us to provide additional services and opportunities for supporting agencies to come alongside our mission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrassroots Leadership\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Grassroots Leadership is a Houston and Austin Texas-based national social justice organization working to end the government’s use of for-profit prisons and reliance on mass incarceration\, detention\, and deportation policies. \n\n\n\nWe make up a beautifully diverse group of lived experiences reimagining a community without policing. Building spaces within our organization to learn from one another and remember that we are all learning to heal and develop abolition forward thinking. \n\n\n\nOur programs are fueled by our memberships\, which consist of lived experiences and allyship\, who work together to organize strategic campaigns throughout Texas. \n\n\n\nMore about Grassroots Leadership and its programs can be found  at www.grassrootsleadership.org  \n\n\n\nTwo of its major programs are Texas Advocates for Justice\, and Participatory Defense. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTexas Advocates for Justice unites formerly incarcerated individuals\, their  families\, people of all faiths\, and allies to build safe and resilient communities through organizing\, leadership training and connections to community resources. \n\n\n\nFor more information about their activities\, see the Texas Advocates for Justice web page \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipatory Defense is a community organizing model for people facing charges\, their families and communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the court system’s power landscape.
