SUMMARY:The Preserve - A Nature Based Solution
DESCRIPTION:Join Karla Klay\, Executive Director of Artist Boat to hear about their largest project and their clearest nature-based solution: the Coastal Heritage Preserve on West Galveston Island.\n\nGalveston Island sits in the Galveston Bay Estuary\, facing the Gulf of Mexico. Bayside wetlands improve water quality\, support fisheries\, and buffer storms. Coastal prairies absorb floodwaters and sequester carbon. Dunes and beaches guard against erosion from a high-energy coast. These habitats are in steep decline under pressure from development\, sea-level rise\, erosion\, and subsidence. Protecting land before it’s fragmented is the most cost-effective\, durable intervention we have. Since 2010\, with partners across agencies and the community\, Artist Boat has assembled a 1\,039-acre sanctuary with a goal of 1\,400 acres — a living laboratory for resilience. Thus far\, $24M+ has been secured through 14 transactions to make the vision real. With hope\, Artist Boat is striving to conserve the next 204 acres. DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions can come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 10%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal. \nParticipants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money. DESCRIPTION:With all news reports these days about conflicts and refugee crises around the world\, have you wondered if there is something you can do?\nAccept International has been working for more than 15 years in conflict-affected countries and regions\, including Somalia and Yemen. Through supporting young people engaged in armed conflict to lay down their arms and rebuild their lives as agents of peace\, we have been advancing efforts toward sustaining peace.\n\nWe have held online events to share details about our activities\, but it has been difficult to tell concrete images about the armed conflict occurring around the world. Therefore\, to give you a more detailed sense of the reality on the ground where we work\, we have organized an event featuring short documentary films.\n\nAt this event\, along with a brief explanation of the issues we are addressing and our approach\, we will watch a short documentary film\, “Why does the Japanese man engage them?”\, directed and filmed by Yuta Saito\, who worked alongside our organization’s executive director\, Dr. Yosuke Nagai in Somalia for two and a half years.\n\nFollowing the screening\, we will also introduce our recent activities\, including efforts to establish international norms for the protection and empowerment of youth engaged in armed conflict.\n\nWe hope you will join us in experiencing the reality of the situation through this film and taking the time to consider conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jeff Crane\, Dean of the College of Arts\, Humanities & Social Sciences\, Cal Poly Humboldt\, as he explores how community farming can play a crucial role in moving past a simple focus on resilience\, mitigation\, and adaptation to one of thrivance in a time of political\, economic\, and ecological chaos. While the threats are manifold and extreme\, it is important to move past reactionary responses to working towards a better now and future\, addressing the fundamental issues and challenges that existed prior to this immediate period and will persist after\, unless action is taken. Community farming is integral to thrivance. It fosters better physical\, emotional\, psychological\, and spiritual health. It helps repair the relationship between humanity and the natural world. It creates a web of community connections\, friendships\, and reciprocity. And finally\, community farming brings joy and beauty into our lives. Her commitment to conflict resolution was shaped through her close engagement with a friend from Afghanistan and her decision to dedicate herself to the work. SUMMARY:Networking Mixer/Social/Brunch -July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Representatives of Houston-area non-profit organizations are again invited to come to our next networking event to share what your group is doing\, and to promote your upcoming events. And you can do it while enjoying an informal brunch with each other and some of HPJC’s Board. \n\n\n\nPrevious participants have told us how they enjoyed these events and how they were glad to be able to connect with people from other organizations. \n\n\n\nThe event is free\, but we ask that you let us know by July 16 how many from your group will be coming (so we can have enough food\, tables\, and chairs for everyone)\, and if you need table space for displays or literature. Please send us an email to director@hpjc.org with that information and any questions or dietary restrictions that  you may have. \n\n\n\nThanks and we look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Finding Water and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Finding hope in adapting to climate change can start by focusing on water.  Join Jen Powis\, Managing Attorney for the Gulf Regional Office of Earthjustice\, for a high level overview of how the law protects or sometimes sacrifices drinking water for industrial development and how communities can work together to protect the elixir of life.  \n\n\n\nThe talk will also touch briefly on environmental justice principles of community led work with the reference frame around water harkening back to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”  Dr. King famously invoked the Old Testament scripture Amos 5:24 when he adapted the verse to declare: “No\, no\, we are not satisfied\, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters\, and righteousness like a mighty stream.”  \n\n\n\nTime for interactive discussion with the speaker will be provided.  \n\n\n\nPlease register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1992953945901.  \n\n\n\nThis virtual event will use the WebEx platform. DESCRIPTION:HPJC is excited to announce the recipients of our 2026 Peacemaker Awards\, and we hope you will plan to attend the ceremony on Sunday afternoon\, Oct. 11. \n\n\n\nThis year’s honorees\, in alphabetical order\, are: \n\n\n\nCouncil on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)\, Houston Chapter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCAIR’s vision is to be a leading advocate for justice and mutual understanding. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam\, protect civil rights\, promote justice\, and empower American Muslims. \n\n\n\nCAIR works on Ensuring Justice and Equality — Safeguarding the rights and dignity of our community. Stand with us in ensuring justice and equality by reporting any civil rights violations or discrimination. \n\n\n\nCAIR-Houston\, along with HPJC and other civil rights organizations in our area\, was a co-sponsor of a civil rights conference here in 2014. HPJC was glad to work with CAIR then and we developed a very good working relationship. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas is a nonprofit civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting justice and mutual understanding. As part of the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization\, the Houston Chapter operates alongside other Texas affiliates in Austin\, Dallas\, and San Antonio. Through its grassroots efforts\, the chapter works to protect civil rights\, address discrimination\, and empower American Muslims to actively participate in political and social activism. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas promotes a positive image of Islam and Muslims through media relations\, government affairs\, education\, and advocacy. Its work includes challenging negative portrayals of Islam\, advocating for Muslim concerns in legislative spaces\, and addressing Islamophobia. The chapter’s civil rights department provides legal assistance to individuals facing discrimination or hate crimes. At the same time\, its media and government affairs teams engage with journalists and policymakers to ensure balanced representation and community participation. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas also focuses on community empowerment and youth development. It organizes voter registration drives\, fosters interfaith dialogue\, and supports leadership programs to equip American Muslim youth with the tools to engage in civic and political life. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit\, the chapter relies on tax-deductible donations to continue its mission of advocating for justice and fostering inclusion in a diverse society. \n\n\n\nMore about CAIR is at cairhouston.com/houston  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOPE Center Houston\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHope Center Houston stands for Compassionate\, Faith-Based Services for Our Neighbors Experiencing Homelessness. \n\n\n\nIt is a faith-based agency offering a day center\, emergency shelter\, and transitional housing for individuals experiencing homelessness in northwest Houston. It is supported by local businesses\, private donors\, and churches. We provide essential services Monday through Friday\, including breakfast and lunch\, laundry\, showers\, clothing\, medical and dental care\, computer access for job searches\, social services\, barbers\, counseling\, mentoring\, and faith-based programs led by various community leaders. \n\n\n\nIts Mission:  \n\n\n\nHope Center Houston is a faith-based community where compassion meets action. We provide a safe\, welcoming place for our homeless brothers and sisters—offering dignity\, meeting basic needs\, and guiding each individual with love\, encouragement\, and practical support on their journey toward healing\, restoration\, and lasting transformation. \n\n\n\nIts History: \n\n\n\nSince its founding\, Hope Center Houston has grown from a local initiative into a vibrant community hub providing meals\, hygiene services\, spiritual support\, and social service connections for Houston’s homeless population. In 2015\, members of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church became aware of the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in our area. Forming a task force\, they created a 501(c)(3) corporation\, found a strip center location\, and began a homeless ministry. 1960 Hope Center opened its doors on August 29\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe ministry quickly grew with support from more than 20 churches. Initially\, hospitality was our focus\, providing “Dignity Through Hospitality.” As the ministry matured\, we increased our services\, focusing on life development support\, including life-skills classes\, support groups\, one-on-one mentoring\, and spiritual support. “Compassion\, Commitment\, and Change” is our focus. \n\n\n\nMore than 3\,000 unique homeless individuals were served in the first three years of the Center. Several hundred made significant strides in overcoming addictions\, acquiring jobs\, and finding affordable housing. In August 2019\, we became Hope Center Houston and acquired a new facility\, allowing us to provide additional services and opportunities for supporting agencies to come alongside our mission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrassroots Leadership\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Grassroots Leadership is a Houston and Austin Texas-based national social justice organization working to end the government’s use of for-profit prisons and reliance on mass incarceration\, detention\, and deportation policies. \n\n\n\nWe make up a beautifully diverse group of lived experiences reimagining a community without policing.
