DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an online talk on Sunday\, June 17 at 6 p.m. by Caroline Kostak of the U.S\, Green Building Council on Going Green for Home Building/Remodeling Projects. \nChrist the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. \nCaroline Kostak\, Secretary\, Texas Gulf Coast Region\, U.S. Green Building Council \nGoing Green for Home Building/Remodeling Projects \nSunday\, June 17\, at 6 p.m. \nThe amount of resources borrowed from our Earth to create the buildings in which we spend 93% of our lives is staggering. If we look at just the residential building industry\, we see that we are building homes with a life span of 40-100 years\, with the interior materials having an even shorter lifespan. \nThrough this discussion\, Caroline Kostak\, secretary of the Texas Gulf Coast Region chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council\, will look at how we can meet the need to shelter and provide work space for a growing population while also being respectful of the resources given to us on Earth.   We will explore different strategies that can lead to efficient resource management and produce beautiful\, healthy\, and efficient buildings that celebrate the gifts and abundance of the Earth while also protecting them. \nCaroline draws from her experience as a NASA Flight Controller\, constructing one of the highest performance structures ever built – the International Space Station – and many conversations with space travelers who have seen first-hand the fragility and beauty of our Earth from a distinct vantage point.  Her work with space construction has led directly to her working in construction on Earth\, as this broadened perspective helped her see the importance of being a good steward of the precious Earth we’ve been asked to care for. \nAfter Caroline’s talk\, there will be time for Q&A.  Please register for this talk; \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/going-green-for-home-buildingremodeling-projects-tickets-45446415452 \nand you will receive an invitation to the web meeting.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:Progressive Movie Night: "The Battle of Algiers"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Houston Communist Party for our monthly Progressive Movie Night! \n“The Battle of Algiers” is a 1966 Italian-Algerian historical war film co-written and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo and starring Jean Martin and Saadi Yacef. It is based on events during the Algerian War (1954–62) against the French government in North Africa; the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers\, the capital of Algeria. It was shot on location and the film’s score was composed by Ennio Morricone. The film\, which was shot in a Roberto Rossellini-inspired newsreel style—in black and white with documentary-type editing—is often associated with Italian neorealism cinema. \nThe film has been critically celebrated and often taken\, by insurgent groups and states alike\, as an important commentary on urban guerrilla warfare. It occupies the 48th place on the Critics’ Top 250 Films of the 2012 Sight & Sound poll as well as 120th place on Empire magazine’s list of the 500 greatest movies of all time. \nAlgeria gained independence from the French\, a matter which Pontecorvo portrays in the film’s epilogue. The film concentrates on the years between 1954 and 1957 when the guerrilla fighters regrouped and expanded into the Casbah\, the citadel of Algiers\, which was met by French paratroopers attempting to regain territory. The highly dramatic film is about the organization of a guerrilla movement and the illegal methods used by the colonial power to contain it. \nA subject of socio-political controversy\, the film was not screened for five years in France\, where it was later released in 1971. DESCRIPTION:Time to register for Peace Camp 2018!\nTo register\, click here: PEACE CAMP REGISTRATION \n“Justice” is the theme this summer for Peace Camp 2018.  This is an alternative day camp from 9am – 3pm\, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga\, gardening\, special guests\, using puppets co-operative games\, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control\, racism\, LGBTQ issues\, PTSD\, and other more mature topics. Although several sessions are at churches\, the camp is not religious. DESCRIPTION:In honor of LGBTQIA+ pride\, our Town Talk this month will focus on how to be an ally to the transgender and nonbinary community. Lou Weaver\, queer transman & transgender programs coordinator for Equality Texas\, will moderate a panel discussion with members of the transgender and nonbinary community. Over the course of the evening\, Lou will explore the simple language and terminology we can use as allies\, when talking about the transgender and nonbinary community. \nRegister at https://events.mobilizeamerica.io/hcdp/event/1102/ \nModerator: Lou Weaver (he/him/his)\, a queer transgender man\, is the Transgender Programs Coordinator for Equality Texas and Co-Director of TransForward – Creating Culturally Competent Transgender Health Program. Lou works to elevate the voices of transgender Texans\, utilizing the TransVisible Project\, a first-of-its-kind public education campaign. Lou volunteers with the political and community engagement committees of the Houston chapter of the Human Rights Campaign\, and serves on HRC’s National Board of Governors as co-chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. He was recently awarded the Katy Caldwell Humanitarian Award from the University of Houston’s LGBTQ Alumni Association \nPanelists: Emmett Schelling (he/him/his) is the executive director of the Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT)\, a statewide TGNC led and focused organization that advocates for gender diverse Texans through policy and education. \nJoelle Salatarski (she/her/hers) is an active member of the Houston trans community. She has helped plan and execute the Houston Transgender Unity Banquet. During the day she is an automotive mechanic. Joelle has three children and two grandchildren. \nKathy Green(she/her/hers) is a parent of two kids one who loves cub scouts and is a trans youth. She works as a nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital. \nMike Webb (they/them/theirs) identifies as a non-binary person\, they have been involved in politic for awhile and are the current president of the GLBT Political Caucus. \nJessica Zyrie (she/her/hers) is a model\, creative director\, stylist\, advocate\, and the first ever transgender female to be a clinical case manager at the Montrose Center. Jessica uses her platform to promote equality and education regarding communities that are largely discriminated against including racial issues\, LGBTQ equality\, defeating health stigmas\, and more. \nJoin us afterwards for one of the best drag shows in town and help us raise a few dollars for a local LGBTQIA+ youth charity. SUMMARY:Demonstration against the Houston Child Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:Widespread\, intense opposition to the separation of migrant families has led Trump to issue an executive order supposedly ending this practice. But this nightmare is far from over. About 2000 children remain separated from their moms and dads. Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy of prosecuting migrants may mean more family separations or the long-term detention of entire families. The administration is talking about new detention centers for scores of thousands of migrants. And in Houston\, plans for a new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue are going forward. \nThe new Free Los Niños Coalition and the people of Greater Houston are not going to let this building become a prison for children or families. We are committed to stopping not only family separations but also raids\, detentions\, and the criminalization of people who are only seeking a better life. We understand that Trump’s attacks on migrants are part of a broader assault on people of color\, women\, LGBT communities\, workers\, and the limited rights we now have. And we are determined to defeat this dangerous repression\, drive the Trump administration from power\, and open the door to a brighter future with dignity and justice for all people. \nThe Free Los Niños Coalition and its member organizations invite you to participate in another demonstration against the Houston child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue on Thursday\, July 5\, at 6 pm. DESCRIPTION:Time to register for Peace Camp 2018!\nTo register\, click here: PEACE CAMP REGISTRATION \n“Justice” is the theme this summer for Peace Camp 2018.  This is an alternative day camp from 9am – 3pm\, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga\, gardening\, special guests\, using puppets co-operative games\, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control\, racism\, LGBTQ issues\, PTSD\, and other more mature topics. Although several sessions are at churches\, the camp is not religious. DESCRIPTION:Time to register for Peace Camp 2018!\nTo register\, click here: PEACE CAMP REGISTRATION \n“Justice” is the theme this summer for Peace Camp 2018.  This is an alternative day camp from 9am – 3pm\, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga\, gardening\, special guests\, using puppets co-operative games\, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control\, racism\, LGBTQ issues\, PTSD\, and other more mature topics. Although several sessions are at churches\, the camp is not religious. SUMMARY:Youth Justice Visioning Session
DESCRIPTION:The Houston community is greatly impacted by youth incarceration\, as Harris County commits the highest number of youth to Texas’ state secure youth lockups. Additionally\, local Harris County officials plan to build a new juvenile detention center at an estimated cost of $65-70 million. Kids do not belong in prisons\, and the voices of Houston residents- particularly those most affected by youth incarceration- must be heard if a youth justice transformation is to take hold and be successful in Texas. Join us for a visioning session to answer this question: What do young people need to avoid justice involvement and lead successful lives?

DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. On Sunday\, July 29 at 6 p.m.\, we welcome Steve Stelzer\, Program Director for Houston’s Green Building Resource Center. Steve is an architect with 30 years’ experience who is focused on making Houston a greener place to live and work. He will discuss the center’s work to educate the public on healthy and energy/water/material-conserving design & construction. This mission is accomplished in a number of ways: a showroom highlighting building components\, water conservation\, site\, and energy efficiency\, monthly educational seminars on a wide variety of topics\, and plan review services to suggest strategies to conserve energy and water\, save money\, & create a healthier building environment. The center also hosts a green book discussion group\, holds periodic rain barrel and composter sales\, offers Master Composter classes\, educates on Drawdown (ways to combat climate change)\, how to achieve zero waste\, and many other green living topics. Come learn how the center can help you to go green not only with building design and construction\, but also operations & maintenance\, whether for a residential or commercial property. SUMMARY:Creating Inclusive Communities Teacher Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In correlation with the exhibition\, “The Faces of Syrian Refugees\,” Holocaust Museum Houston will host a one-day education workshop for teachers in the Greater Houston area. In efforts to offer resources and information on refugee resettlement and awareness\, refugee advocacy groups will work in conjunction with the HMH Education Department to provide activities\, literature\, and lessons that teachers can take back to their classrooms. \nThis workshop is open to educators who work directly with refugee students\, educators learning more about the refugee experience\, and/or how students can become active advocates. \nTeachers from the K-5\, 6-12\, university and extracurricular programs (music\, art\, etc.) are encouraged to participate. The fee for this program is $25 per person\, which includes workshop materials and lunch.
