DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions can come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 10%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal. \nParticipants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money. While the threats are manifold and extreme\, it is important to move past reactionary responses to working towards a better now and future\, addressing the fundamental issues and challenges that existed prior to this immediate period and will persist after\, unless action is taken. Community farming is integral to thrivance. It fosters better physical\, emotional\, psychological\, and spiritual health. It helps repair the relationship between humanity and the natural world. It creates a web of community connections\, friendships\, and reciprocity. And finally\, community farming brings joy and beauty into our lives. DESCRIPTION:With all news reports these days about conflicts and refugee crises around the world\, have you wondered if there is something you can do?\n \n\nAccept International has been working for more than 15 years in conflict-affected countries and regions\, including Somalia and Yemen. Through supporting young people engaged in armed conflict to lay down their arms and rebuild their lives as agents of peace\, we have been advancing efforts toward sustaining peace.\n\nWe have held online events to share details about our activities\, but it has been difficult to tell concrete images about the armed conflict occurring around the world. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 14: Post-film discussion features Alejandra Salinas\, Houston City Council At-Large Position 4; and Randall Morton\, Executive Director\, Progressive Forum \n\n\n\nOne of the best documentaries of 2026 is an inspiring chronicle of how a community spontaneously responded to a May 2021 immigration raid in Glasgow\, Scotland. Officials detained two men in a largely Muslim neighborhood on the first day of the holiday Eid. Through an incredible communication network\, more than 2\,000 people showed up to record and disrupt the proceedings. DESCRIPTION:While there are many books on ecological restoration and its benefits to humanity\, this book focuses on human healing as a prerequisite to bringing about ecological healing.  Written by a Catholic sister who is also a professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Notre Dame\, she intends the book for a broad audience – “for scientists and engineers … for non-scientists and citizens…for Catholics and non-Catholics…” and for all concerned with how we as human persons can come together to care for our common home. DESCRIPTION:Scientists tell us that we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (vs. a 2010 baseline)\, and that 25 – 30% of all needed emissions reductions can come from individuals/households. 50% may seem like a very high hurdle. But\, it translates to only a 10%/year reduction\, starting now. And\, you may have already made some lifestyle improvements since 2010 that reduced your emissions\, so you could already be well on your way toward the 50% reduction goal.  Participants in this individualized course will leave with a personal plan to achieve the 50% emissions reduction goal through targeted lifestyle improvements that will also save them money.  \n\n\n\nThe course was developed in response to the Walk on Earth Gently multifaith statement\, inspired by religious teachings to turn away from consumerism & to seek balanced relationships with all people and the planet. Walk on Earth Gently invites you into a journey of Living the Change that the world needs. Inspired by Dr. Arelia Johnson’s focus on joy as strategy\, the theme is “Joy and Justice.” \nWe’re bringing together donors\, practitioners\, apprentices and community partners to share light bites\, connect\, and celebrate the growing movement for community rooted justice in Houston. Dress code is JOYFUL and snazzy! \nWe will have featured auction items\, a pop up shop from Kendra Scott\, selfie photo booth\, and a DJ! \nWe are honored to feature nationally recognized restorative justice practitioner\, author\, and trainer Felix Rosado as our keynote speaker. Felix co‑founded Let’s Circle Up\, a restorative justice project created inside Graterford State Prison\, where he spent 27 years leading peace‑building and anti‑violence initiatives before receiving executive clemency in 2022. During his incarceration\, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University and helped build one of the country’s most innovative inside‑led restorative justice programs. \nNow living in Philadelphia\, Felix serves as Executive Director of Let’s Circle Up and teaches at Chestnut Hill College and the Community College of Philadelphia. He is the author of Justice from the Inside Up: A Restorative Justice Education Facilitator’s Manual\, a foundational text for practitioners across the country. \nAbout Restorative Houston: \nThrough our Peacemaker Apprenticeship\, we train youth and adults to facilitate restorative circles\, earn certification\, and join a citywide network of community based practitioners who help build community\, interrupt conflict\, and support healing after harm. \nOur work extends into schools\, neighborhoods\, and the criminal legal system\, where we build belonging\, strengthen emotional wellness\, and equip communities with the skills to connect\, address harm and navigate difficult conversations. \n

DESCRIPTION:HPJC is excited to announce the recipients of our 2026 Peacemaker Awards\, and we hope you will plan to attend the ceremony on Saturday afternoon\, Nov. 21 (note: date change – this was originally scheduled for Oct. 11). \n\n\n\nThe event is both a celebration of groups and individuals making our community better\, plus a time to socialize with other activists. And it’s also the main fund raiser for HPJC for the year. \n\n\n\nThis year’s honorees\, in alphabetical order\, are: \n\n\n\nCouncil on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)\, Houston Chapter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCAIR’s vision is to be a leading advocate for justice and mutual understanding. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam\, protect civil rights\, promote justice\, and empower American Muslims. \n\n\n\nCAIR works on Ensuring Justice and Equality — Safeguarding the rights and dignity of our community. Stand with us in ensuring justice and equality by reporting any civil rights violations or discrimination. \n\n\n\nCAIR-Houston\, along with HPJC and other civil rights organizations in our area\, was a co-sponsor of a civil rights conference here in 2014. HPJC was glad to work with CAIR then and we developed a very good working relationship. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas is a nonprofit civil rights and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting justice and mutual understanding. As part of the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization\, the Houston Chapter operates alongside other Texas affiliates in Austin\, Dallas\, and San Antonio. Through its grassroots efforts\, the chapter works to protect civil rights\, address discrimination\, and empower American Muslims to actively participate in political and social activism. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas promotes a positive image of Islam and Muslims through media relations\, government affairs\, education\, and advocacy. Its work includes challenging negative portrayals of Islam\, advocating for Muslim concerns in legislative spaces\, and addressing Islamophobia. The chapter’s civil rights department provides legal assistance to individuals facing discrimination or hate crimes. At the same time\, its media and government affairs teams engage with journalists and policymakers to ensure balanced representation and community participation. \n\n\n\nThe Houston Chapter of CAIR-Texas also focuses on community empowerment and youth development. It organizes voter registration drives\, fosters interfaith dialogue\, and supports leadership programs to equip American Muslim youth with the tools to engage in civic and political life. It is supported by local businesses\, private donors\, and churches. We provide a safe\, welcoming place for our homeless brothers and sisters—offering dignity\, meeting basic needs\, and guiding each individual with love\, encouragement\, and practical support on their journey toward healing\, restoration\, and lasting transformation. \n\n\n\nIts History: \n\n\n\nSince its founding\, Hope Center Houston has grown from a local initiative into a vibrant community hub providing meals\, hygiene services\, spiritual support\, and social service connections for Houston’s homeless population. In 2015\, members of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church became aware of the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in our area. Forming a task force\, they created a 501(c)(3) corporation\, found a strip center location\, and began a homeless ministry. 1960 Hope Center opened its doors on August 29\, 2016. \n\n\n\nThe ministry quickly grew with support from more than 20 churches. Initially\, hospitality was our focus\, providing “Dignity Through Hospitality.” As the ministry matured\, we increased our services\, focusing on life development support\, including life-skills classes\, support groups\, one-on-one mentoring\, and spiritual support. “Compassion\, Commitment\, and Change” is our focus. \n\n\n\nMore than 3\,000 unique homeless individuals were served in the first three years of the Center.
