SUMMARY:Forest Bathing & Earth Examen
DESCRIPTION:Experience forest bathing\, led by a certified guide\, followed by practice of the Christian spiritual discipline of the Earth Examen.  Forest bathing\, a practice that originated in Japan\, involves taking in\, in all of one’s senses\, the forest atmosphere. Not simply a walk in the woods\, it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights\, sounds and smells of the forest.  Forest bathing has been shown to reduce stress\, improve mood and focus\, enhance creativity\, and lead to an increased sense of calm and altruistic behavior\, in addition to other benefits such as boosting the immune system and lowering blood pressure.  As Christians\, we understand that God is present in God’s creation\, and after our guided forest bath\, we’ll spend some time considering the Earth Examen as we reflect both on our time spent forest bathing and on our relationship with all creation.  This activity is for a small group and space is limited.  Please register at www.eventbrite.com at:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/forest-bathing-earth-examen-tickets-291848535827. This is also a film about beauty\, ecology\, theology\, sanctity\, our relationship to the natural world\, love\, asceticism\, and always it is about the radiant living icon of the face of God in creation. DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Blackburn\, Professor in the Practice in Environmental Law at Rice University\, who will discuss his new book\, Earth Church\, which he co-authored with artist Isabelle Scurry Chapman. Earth Church is a book about Earth-based spirituality\, a subject that will become much more prominent in a future defined by a changing climate and the creation of a new economic system that is circular rather than linear. We are working with the Houston Food Bank to provide breakfast and lunch for all participants and to give back to the local community. DESCRIPTION:Join Sr. Damien Marie Savino\, Dean of Science & Sustainability at Aquinas College and a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist with a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering\, as she reflects on the ancient notion of the “grammar of creation” in light of contemporary ecological challenges. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, January 22\, 2022 (9 AM to 1 PM) to examine the history of racism in law enforcement in the United States. Our presenter\, Jeff Reese\, will discuss the origins of the problem and how we got where we are today.  Reese will lead us in seeking A Way Forward to dismantle institutional racism and mass incarceration.\n\nDuring his 26 year career with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office\, Jeff Reese worked as a hostage negotiator\, suicide counselor\, certified Mental Health Peace Officer\, state certified law enforcement instructor and a front-line supervisor.  After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office\, he joined the Houston Peace & Justice Center (HPJC) and the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice.  For the past three years\, he served as president of the HPJC.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.  Donations appreciated.  RSVP to receive the link to this event on Zoom:\nhttps://www.centerhealingracism.org/event/a-way-forward-a-history-of-racism-in-law-enforcement/
