SUMMARY:Rothko Chapel's MLK Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the Chapel’s annual observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday on January 15\, 2022\, the program opens with a performance of and discussion about music central to the US Civil Rights Movement. The Community Music Center of Houston Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra conducted by Dr. Anne Lundy will share a selection of music central to Dr. King’s transformative leadership and Black Americans’ historic and contemporary protests for equity. Dr. Shana L. Redmond\, scholar of music\, race and politics\, will discuss the broader history surrounding the role of music in activism in the U.S.\, the importance of music in Rev. King’s life\, and the strategic use of music within the Civil Rights Movement.\n\nThe Rothko Chapel started the annual MLK Birthday Celebration in 1979 to connect the contemporary implications of Dr. King’s legacy to the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights\, captured by artist Barnett Newman’s Broken Obelisk. This sculpture\, located on the plaza adjacent to the Chapel\, is dedicated to Dr. King.

SUMMARY:Faithful Resilience: A Study on Climate Resilience for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:Faithful Resilience is a six-part weekly study on climate resilience for faith communities. The climate crisis has arrived. Faith communities must not only react\, but also prepare. Over the last decade\, hurricanes have intensified\, wildfires have burnt stronger\, and heat waves have baked our cities. These events can only be expected to get worse in the next decades. Most of our faith communities are not ready for these climate-driven disasters. Yet\, the communities who will be most threatened by climate change also have an opportunity to play a pivotal role in building resilience in their towns and cities. Whether a faith community has a large facility\, land\, social capital\, or something else\, those assets can be channeled into building climate resilience in preparation for the coming physical and spiritual storms of the climate crisis. Join us for a six-week exploration on Thursday evenings of how your house of worship/faith community can become a force for climate resilience for your community. To learn more/register\, see: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/faithful-resilience-a-study-on-climate-resilience-for-faith-communities-tickets-215046809797. SUMMARY:All Creation Waits Weekly Book Discussion Group for Advent
DESCRIPTION:Avoid the consumer hype of the “holiday season” with daily readings of intimate\, beautifully-written portraits of wild animals and their adaptations to the cold and dark of winter.  The author sees in these creatures lessons for adapting to the “winters” in our own lives.  The book\, although intended as a devotional for the Christian season of Advent\, is very unusual in that the stories contain no overtly religious content\, making it suitable for people of all faiths\, or no faith at all. So\, Christians\, environmentalists\, animal lovers & others will be captivated and inspired by these stories.  And\, the stories can be read with children & enjoyed by the entire family.  Join a weekly book discussion group on Wednesdays\, online\, to reflect together on All Creation Waits.  Register for the weekly discussion on www.eventbrite.com at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/all-creation-waits-book-discussion-group-for-advent-tickets-192586951757. SUMMARY:Quaker Barter Fair
DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving.\nAnd it is a Fair\, with crafts\, games and other activities for families and chldren\, including\, but not limited to Holiday Potpourri\, Stone Art\, Origami\, Milkweed for Monarchs AND Music by Jim Presley: Blues and Native American Music\nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades.\nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to a local charity.\nSchedule: \n12:30 PM – Open for table setup\n1:00 PM – Open to everyone – Games \, Crafts\, all day\n1:30 PM – Children’s Storytime:\n2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Concert-Jim Presley will play Traditional Blues\, Original Blues\, and Native American Music\n3:15 PM – Children’s Story Time: Milkweed & Monarchs\n\nWe will be observing Covid-19 precautions–event takes place outdoors with social distancing \nPlease bring your mask to wear when/if social distancing is not possible.

SUMMARY:A Climate Action Plan for Faith Communities & People of Faith
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Brenskelle\, Houston Climate Communication Coordinator for the Texas chapter of Interfaith Power & Light\, for a discussion on developing a Climate Action Plan for your faith community and for yourself. SUMMARY:Press Conference with Quannel X
DESCRIPTION:Good morning everyone\, It has come to light that the district clerk of Brazoria County Tx was tampering with jury pools to stack juries against people of color. The Tx Rangers started an investigation but once the investigation started\, she was allowed to retire. Her intentionally malicious actions have to lead to hundreds of not thousands of people of color going through trials with stacked juries and vertically zero chance of a fair trial. Hundreds of not thousands of people of color are now in prison\, with others having their kids taken away and fostered or adopted out to other families. The Tx Ranger investigating is complicit in this corruption\, Rhonda Barchak’s own attorney admitted that judges\, prosecutors\, attorneys etc all knew what she was doing and allowed her to do it. My cousin is a 32 year old black man who was sentenced to life for a murder he did not commit by an all white jury\, majority middle aged. Every bit of evidence cleared his name including dna and forensics present on the victims body and bed\, it was determined to not be his DNA. Geofencing and GPS determined that he was no where near the victims home when the crime occurred\, they even validated his alibi and it still only took that jury 2 hours to find him guilty. The next day\, they gave him life. They have been doing this to people for at least the last decade\, and if we don’t get the Feds to step in and take over the investigation\, it will be swept under the rug. Thomas Norsworthy\, the Tx Ranger’s investigator works down here and has close and personal friendships WITH the people he’s supposedly investigating. We CAN NOT let this go\, we can not let this be swept under the rug. We’re holding our 3rd press conference with Quanell X at the FBI headquarters in Houston Tx\, tomorrow\, Friday Nov 5 2021 at 12pm and we need EVERY ABLE BODIED PERSON to come stand with us\, to show a United front and let the Feds know that if they refuse to step in and do what’s right\, we will know they too\, are complicit. Please join us if you can

SUMMARY:End the Texas Abortion Ban!
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Legislature’s ban on almost all abortions threatens the freedom\, health\, and lives of people seeking to terminate their pregnancies. This horrific new law will especially harm people of color and workers. It is time for us to hold members of the Texas Legislature who approved this law accountable for their actions.\n\nAn energetic demonstration against the Texas abortion ban will be held on Wednesday\, November 3\, at 5 pm\, at the office of state Senator Paul Bettencourt\, 11451 Katy Freeway. Bettencourt was a sponsor of this unconscionable law and showed complete disregard for the freedom\, health\, and lives of people seeking abortions.\n\nThis action is being organized by Houston United Front Against Fascism and Houston Socialist Movement. Please plan to join us on November 3 and help spread the word.

SUMMARY:Why Insects Matter
DESCRIPTION:In October\, join Scott Solomon\, Associate Teaching Professor in Biosciences at Rice University\, for a discussion on the complex relationships we have with insects and the reasons why they have been– and continue to be– among Earth’s most essential species. Insects are also the most diverse group of organisms on the planet and life as we know it could not exist without them. Come learn to appreciate the insects around you!  Time for interactive Q&A with Professor Solomon will be provided.  Please register for this talk on www.eventbrite.com at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/why-insects-matter-tickets-169681669441. SUMMARY:The Path of Hope: A Study on Climate Action for Faith Communities
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join a weekly online discussion series on Thursday\, beginning Oct. 28\,  built around 15-minute videos featuring interviews with US faith leaders\, representatives of climate-impacted communities from the global South\, and presentations by UN officials and other experts. The videos walk viewers through four key climate policy issues that intersect with universal faith concerns for vulnerable and marginalized people. The series focuses on how climate change is impacting the core ministries of faith communities around the world\, how those impacts will increase in the future\, and why these impacts create an imperative for people of faith to advocate for strong US climate action.  A discussion guide is included that asks participants to think deeply about how their own local faith community’s direct service programs intersect with climate impacts\, and how knowledge and experiences gained through these programs might help to inform climate policy. The study’s Action Center provides practical\, step-by-step instructions for advocacy activities\, as well as recommended policy asks for local\, state\, and national leaders.  Join us! SUMMARY:Undeterred Movie\, online
DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.\nLearn more and view the trailer here\nDownload and share the poster here\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81859004066?pwd=U3pwc1ZHb1l3aHRPRU1QSUtTWE9qQT09 \n
