SUMMARY:The Wonders of Coastal Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, wetlands were considered useless land\, and we filled them in to make farmland and housing. Today\, we realize that wetlands provide numerous valuable services to humanity\, and we seek to protect and restore them. Coastal wetlands are threatened by a number of factors\, but can be remarkably resilient to moderate rates of sea level rise. This talk will review some of the benefits we derive from coastal wetlands\, discuss the threats facing them\, and explain why we have reason to expect that wetlands will survive despite ongoing global change. DESCRIPTION:Never Again Action-Houston will hold a second COVID-safe\, car-only demonstration to demand the closure of the Southwest Key detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue on Sunday\, April 19\, at 1:30 pm. We will assemble in the parking lot diagonally across from the detention center and place signs on our cars–at a safe distance from each other. Please bring your own signs and tape! Then we will form a caravan and drive around the detention center\, honking and chanting as we go\, for about one hour. \nThis demonstration is co-sponsored by Houston Socialist Movement and Refuse Fascism-Houston. It is part of a state-wide day of action against ICE and private detention centers. Never Again Action groups will also hold car-only protests in San Antonio\, Austin\, Dallas-Ft. Worth\, and Corpus Christi. We can’t let COVID-19 become a death sentence for migrants in detention centers. Together\, we will demand: Close the Camps! Free Them All! SUMMARY:The Wonders of the Deep Sea
DESCRIPTION:Approximately two thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans with an average depth of about 2.65 miles. Below 0.62 miles\, the water is completely dark\, temperatures plummet to 39 °F\, and the pressure is about 40 times the pressure of earth’s atmosphere. Nonetheless\, many creatures can live in this extreme place having no light. Deep sea explorations have found shrimp\, fish\, coral\, tube worms\, mussels\, starfish\, and many other creatures even below 2 miles. About 95% of the ocean remains unexplored\, and marine scientists continuously find new species in this unusual place. In addition to creatures\, huge quantities of methane gas hydrates and billions of tons of manganese nodules are found in deep ocean floors (2-4 miles deep). Manganese nodules grow only 10-100 millimeters per million years. Gas hydrates may contain roughly twice the carbon contained in all reserves of coal\, oil\, and conventional natural gas combined. SUMMARY:Escalting Resistance: Mass Rebellion Training
DESCRIPTION:Extinction Rebellion Houston is hosting a nonviolence workshop with longtime nonviolence trainer and activist Lisa Fithian. \nLisa will be offering a three hour training to hone our strategies and tactics to impact power holders and create social disruption at increasingly larger scales. This organizing requires attention to how we build collective power that heals and liberates us from our socialization in the dominant culture of superiority – white\, male\, rich and Christian. \nIn addition to this exploration of power and healing we will look at: power mapping of people\, economic centers\, and geographies to increase impact within strategic terrains\, creating calendars of engagement\, organizing our people\, increasing our capacity to take risks\, developing solidarity response networks and how artful “props” can bolster our uprisings.. \nWe cannot just tear it all down without replacing systems of oppression with systems of liberation. This is our challenge: organizing courageous\, joyful and bold rebellions rooted in solidarity\, with a beautiful\, loving insistence that another world is possible and we are creating her every day.

SUMMARY:Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film: Growing Up Female
DESCRIPTION:Controversial upon its release\, the first feature-length film of the modern women’s movement looks at female socialization through a peek into the lives of six women\, ages 4 to 35\, and the forces that shape them: teachers\, counselors\, advertising\, music\, and marriage. The film was widely used by consciousness-raising groups to generate interest and help explain feminism to a skeptical society. Viewers now have a chance to see how much has changed and how much remains the same. \nFollowed by Union Maids (directed by Julia Reichert\, Jim Klein\, and Miles Mogulescu\, USA\, 1976\, 48 min.) The fight to form industrial unions in the first half of the 20th century through is covered in the stories of three women who leave rural farms for job opportunities in Chicago. The women recount their experiences of working 14 hours a day in factories where management had all the power while workers—especially women and minorities—had none. \nDigital preservation and the restored 16mm prints made possible by The Women’s Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film & Television.

SUMMARY:TAKE A “TOXIC TOUR” OF HOUSTON WITH ROTHKO CHAPEL AND TEXAS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ADVOCACY SERVICES
DESCRIPTION:Participants will visit East End sites on February 8 \n  \n  \nHouston\, TX (December 19\, 2019) Rothko Chapel in collaboration with Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s.) will host a bus tour of toxic sites in and around the greater Houston community on Saturday\, February 8\, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The tour will be led by Juan Parras and Yvette Arellano of t.e.j.a.s. and will explore the East End of Houston\, a neighborhood which borders Houston’s Ship Channel and is comprised of mostly Latino residents.  This frontline community is situated next to some of the largest refineries and chemical plants in the city.  Air pollution from nearby plastics-producing plants floats over schools\, offices\, and\, homes.  The goal of the tour is to show participants the structural reality of these massive industrial complexes and to offer a first-hand understanding of environmental justice issues the community faces. \n  \nParticipants will meet at 1415 Sul Ross (Chapel Annex) at 9:15 a.m. to enjoy a light breakfast and to board the bus. The bus is equipped with restrooms and WIFI. Bring your own lunch to eat on the bus. Please note that the bus will stop and explore some areas on foot. Therefore\, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable attire and closed toe shoes for walking on uneven and muddy terrain.  Tickets are $20 per person to offset transportation costs incurred by the Rothko Chapel and space is limited. Registration is required through rothkochapel.org. \n  \nThis program is presented as part of the Rothko Chapel’s two-year programmatic initiative exploring climate change’s impact on individuals around the world\, culminating with the biennial Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award for Human Rights in 2020. \n  \nTour Guides \nJuan Parras\, Founder/Executive Director\, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s).  Juan has been organizing community voices for years beginning as a social worker with the Harris County Welfare Office\, and later with City of Houston Section 8 Housing Department. Juan’s resolve for equity\, justice and community resilience is the driving force behind t.e.j.a.s. with more than 40 years of organizing and work from social services to labor\, to environmental justice\, Parras can attest to the empowering force behind marrying issues of intersectionality in environmental work for marginalized communities. \n  \nYvette Arellano serves as a policy research and grassroots advocate with t.e.j.a.s. In 2015\, they led the campaign against H.R. 702\, which opened the floodgates to U.S. crude oil exports. Yvette represented the Gulf South at COP25. Currently\, Yvette is leading efforts in Houston to help stop petrochemical expansion fueled by plastic production. \n  \nAbout Rothko Chapel \nThe Rothko Chapel is closed through June 2020 for major renovations.  As part of its Opening Spaces campaign\, the first phase of the project will realize a Welcome House and a new energy center; enhancements to the lighting and entryway in the Chapel; and new greenspaces for reflection will be added to the existing grounds.
