We face floods\, wildfires\, extreme weather\, crop failure\, mass displacement and the breakdown of society. The time for denial is over. Together we’re unstoppable. \n\nAbout Our Speaker\nBrent Sullivan has lived his life in Houston\, first becoming active on environmental causes via Occupy and the Tar Sands Blockade actions against the Keystone pipeline in the woods of Nacodoches. \nMore recently\, he served on the planning committee for the People’s Climate March and started “Tuesdays at Cornyn’s” which has met with his staffers and rallied on the sidewalk every Tuesday for over 150 weeks. \nIn September\, along with 18 others\, Brent started forming Extinction Rebellion Houston\, a group dedicated to driving its 4 demands into public debate and into policy through direct action. “Heading for Extinction–and what to do about it” lays bare the scope and scale of the emergency we face and makes both a moral and practical case for direct action. \nMost of Brent’s family is in the oil business\, so he views Extinction Rebellion’s 4th Demand for a Just Transition as foundational to the entire effort. SUMMARY:Film showing - Abby Martin's Gaza Fight for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The documentary was made during\, and depicts\, the Great March of Return protests\, whose images Palestinians of slain medics\, journalists\, women\, children\, and disabled people resounded throughout the world in 2018. The Trump administration’s deepened support for the most extreme Israeli positions is also displayed in the film\, with clips of Trump’s moving of the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and preparation for the “Deal of the Century.” \nThe government of Israel tightly restricts the presence of journalists in the Gaza. In order to work around these restrictions\, The Empire Files team collaborated with Palestinian videographers from Gaza. \nGaza is  the 25-mile long\, seven-mile wide strip of occupied and blockaded land that the World Health Organization has said will be unfit for human occupation by 2020. The description of Gaza as an “open-air prison” is commonly used these days\, but Gaza Fights for Freedom gives a visceral and painful view of this descriptor. Narrated by Martin\, the camera winds us through the streets of Gaza\, through the rubble of past Israeli aerial assaults–2008\, 2012\, 2014\, and intermittent years.  The attack in 2014 alone destroyed nearly 20\,000 homes. Gaza is unable to recover from this destruction\, rebuild or remove the debris due to the blockade. The film takes us through densely populated cities\, where families have no choice but to drink water unsafe for consumption. \nThe height of the Great March Of Return protests\, it features exclusive footage of demonstrations where 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by Israeli snipers since March 30\, 2018.

In summer of 1975\, one man’s concern for the well-being and betterment of the entire human race led to the establishment of the organization.  In January 1978\, Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s father\, Martin Luther “Daddy” King\, Sr. addressed the Houston community and commissioned Mr. Ovide Duncantell and BHS to continue its endeavor in the aspirations of Dr. King’s dream.\n\nThe organization aims to inspire\, teach\, and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. during the weekend of the federal holiday occurring on the third Monday of each January with a commemorative parade and celebratory festive community activities throughout the weekend.\n\nWith a long history of fighting for equal justice and social accommodations for the rights of all\, the organization the organization subscribes to Activism\, Advocacy\, and Action on behalf of the underprivileged\, undeserved\, and those seeking justice and equality. The Black Heritage Society maintains an official IPM license from The King Center in Atlanta\, GA.

DESCRIPTION:ROTHKO CHAPEL AND TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY CELEBRATE MLK BIRTHDAY WITH ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM  \n  \nHouston\, TX (December 17\, 2019) – Rothko Chapel and the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) will partner for a program to explore the influence of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement on environmental justice. The program\, “Actions of Change: From the Civil Rights Movement to the Struggle for Environmental Justice\,” is set for Wednesday\, January 15\, 2020\, at 6 p.m. on what would have been Dr. King’s 91st birthday. Dr. Robert Bullard\, distinguished professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at TSU\, also known to many as the “father of environmental justice\,” will give a keynote address then join in conversation with Yvette Arellano\, senior staff\, Policy Research & Grassroots Advocate for Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (t.e.j.a.s)\, and Bridgette Murray\, founder of Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS). Dr. Richard McKinley Mizelle\, Jr.\, associate professor of History at University of Houston\, will moderate the discussion exploring the evolution of the environmental justice movement\, continued environmental challenges and inequities faced by vulnerable and frontline communities\, and actions being taken to improve the health of the region. \n“Actions of Change: From the Civil Rights Movement to the Struggle for Environmental Justice\,” is being presented as part of the Rothko Chapel’s two-year programmatic initiative exploring the impact climate change is having on individuals around the world\, culminating with the biennial Rothko Chapel Oscar Romero Award for Human Rights. \nThe free program will be held in the McCoy Auditorium\, Room 105\, in the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs on the campus of Texas Southern University\, 3401 Cleburne Street\, Houston\, 77004\, and will be followed by a reception beginning at 7:30 p.m. Parking is available for $5 and registration is required through Rothko Chapel’s website at www.rothkochapel.org. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers:  \nDr. Robert D. Bullard \nDr. Robert D. Bullard is distinguished professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University in Houston. He is often called the “father of environmental justice.”  Dr. Bullard is co-founder of the HBCU Climate Change Consortium and author of eighteen books that address environmental racism\, urban land use\, housing\, transportation\, sustainability\, smart growth\, climate justice\, and community resilience.  His latest books include Race\, Place and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina (2009)\, Environmental Health and Racial Equity in the United States (2011)\, and The Wrong Complexion for Protection: How the Government Response to Disaster Endangers African American Communities (2012). In 1990\, he received the National Wildlife Federation Conservation Achievement Award in Science for Dumping in Dixie.  In 2008\, Newsweek named him one of “13 Environmental Leaders of the Century.” In 2013\, Sierra Club honored him with the John Muir Award and in 2014 named its new Environmental Justice Award after Dr. Bullard.  In 2015\, the American Bar Association presented him with its Environmental\, Energy\, and Resources Stewardship Award.  In 2017\, the Children Environmental Health Network presented him with the Child Health Advocate Award. In 2018\, the Global Climate Action Summit named Dr. Bullard one of 22 Climate Trailblazers.  And in 2019\, Apolitical named him one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy\, Washington State University honored him with the William Julius Wilson Award for the Advancement of Justice and Climate One named him the Stephen H. Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication. \nYvette Arellano \nYvette Arellano serves as a policy research and grassroots advocate with Tejas. In 2015\, they led the campaign against H.R. 702\, which opened the floodgates to U.S. crude oil exports. Yvette represented the Gulf South at COP25. Yvette was instrumental in the publication Double Jeopardy in Houston\, Air Toxics and Health in the Houston Community of Manchester and most recently Plastic and Health: The Hidden Cost of a Plastic Planet. They strive to emphasize that the Rights of Nature are fundamental to overall existence. Currently\, Yvette is leading efforts in Houston to help stop petrochemical expansion fueled by plastic production. \nBridgette Murray \nBridgette Murray is the founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS). She is a long time resident of the Pleasantville community having served as the President of both the Pleasantville Civic League (PCL) and Pleasantville Area Super Neighborhood Council #57. In 2013\, Murray established ACTS to support community activities in the areas of social and environmental justice. Murray recognizes Pleasantville’s vulnerabilities and strives to strengthen community resiliency for all generations. She holds a BS in Nursing from Baylor University and an MBA from the University of Houston\, and is retired from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. \n  \nAbout the Moderator: \nRichard McKinley Mizelle\, Jr. \nRichard McKinley Mizelle\, Jr. is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Houston and also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History.  His research focuses on historical understandings of health and healthcare politics\, medical citizenship\, environmentalism and health\, medical technology\, race\, gender\, and ethnicity in medicine\, and the transformation of disease identity.  He is the author of Backwater Blues: The Mississippi Flood of 1927 in the African American Imagination and co-author of Resilience and Opportunity: Lessons from the U.S. Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita. These blameless young enter a world of jailers and bars\, cold and frightening\, in a futile grasp at normalcy during perhaps the single most important family time of the year. \n  \nThe emotional scars they experience and which may last a lifetime are ministered at Harris County Adult Detention Center by Santa Claus and several dozen elves who await these precious children as they walk out of the building. It is at this point that a miracle often occurs which can immediately be seen on the faces of these little ones. In the midst of the Fat Jolly Gentleman and piles of presents you can see their shaken faith in life return and a light of rekindled joy flicker in their eyes. \n  \nOn Christmas Eve this year\, End Mass Incarcation Houston\, in association with The Positive Black Male Association of Houston\, Houston Peace and Justice Center\, and Bering United Methodist Church\, will change the world with Love. We will give gifts to children\, visiting their jailed parents\, as they emerge from the two largest jails in the city. DESCRIPTION:Never Again Action-Houston will hold a demonstration at the home of David Denenburg at 3043 Locke Ln\, on Monday\, December 23\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Denenburg is a co-owner of the building at 419 Emancipation Avenue which is being leased to Southwest Key for use as an immigrant child detention center. We demand that Denenburg cancel the lease with Southwest Key and that this facility and all other immigrant detention centers be closed! We demand that all the raids and deportations targeting immigrants end! \nWe are part of the national Never Action Action movement. We are a Jewish-led network which will not remain silent as the threat of fascism and genocide grows. We understand that Never Again is Now. We are raising our voices and putting our bodies on the line alongside immigrant advocates and other activists fighting to end the government’s war against immigrants. Through interviews with his friends\, the documentary tells the story of “Mark\,” who converted to Islam before college and became radicalized shortly thereafter. A number of years ago\, through Facebook posts\, “Mark” stated that he crossed over from Turkey to the “Islamic State.” His friends from Sugar Land\, Texas—all masked to protect their identities—hypothesize about what may have happened that led their friend to join ISIS. Ghosts of Sugar Land won the Nonfiction Jury Award for Short Film at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. \n• “A personal drama with a geopolitical scope” —New Yorker  \n• “Ghosts of Sugar Land tells an essential story of betrayal and Islamic identity” —Vanity Fair \nAbout the Director\nBassam Tariq is an independent filmmaker and producer born in Karachi\, Pakistan. Tariq co-directed and produced the Sundance-funded documentary These Birds Walk with Omar Mullick and was named in Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2012. Tariq’s works aim to uncover the diversity of Muslim life and experience. In addition to making films\, he blogs and writes; co-founded a halal butcher shop; and is a TED fellow. Tariq lives in New York City with his wife and son.

The screening includes a 15-minute intermission. \nAbout the Filmmaker\nAnand Patwardhan was born in Bombay in 1950. His passionate\, detailed chronicling of injustices in India has made him known as the filmmaking conscience of his nation. Reason received the award for best feature-length documentary at the 2018 Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.
