SUMMARY:Transition - It's Up to You
DESCRIPTION:Are you feeling curious? Critical? Excited? Daunted?\nThe Transition movement is made up of people like you who are already feeling the benefit of connecting with others to take care of themselves\, their community and the planet. \nWe hope you’ll join us at the next Transition Houston meeting as we explore local issues and how to raise awareness enabling us to make informed decisions in November and beyond. Educating and empowering members within our communities and our elected officials is an integral part of bringing about the changes we need. By continuing to learn\, share and take action with one another\, we can transform our present and our future. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nBetween the things we can do as individuals\, and the things government and business can do to respond to the challenges of our times\, lies a great untapped potential. It’s about what you can create with the help of the people who live in your street\, your neighborhood\, your town. \nIf enough people do it\, it can lead to real impact\, to real jobs and real transformation of the places we live\, and beyond! \nWe hope to see you there! Bring a friend! \nQuoting Rob Hopkins\, one of Transition’s founders – “For years\, in the green movement\, we have held that we are right\, that we have the answers … [But] many of the answers we need are to be found in people who we might\, in a more judgmental moment\, be seen as being part of the ‘system’\, including business people\, lawyers\, church groups\, local history groups\, and thousands of ordinary people with busy lives\, bills to pay and children to raise.”

SUMMARY:Get to Know the System that Oppresses Us - Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:There is much current attention to social and economic inequality. The Occupy movement did much to highlight the inequality and framed the issues as the 1% versus the 99%. Unfortunately\, the root cause of inequality is kept a deep secret – theft of surplus value created by workers. \nKarl Marx\, considered by current information scientists as the most influential scholar in history\, identified the source of wealth as stolen surplus value. His monumental work is entitled “Capital”. Join us as we go over the Marxist critique of Capitalism. Inequality\, wars\, racism and other social ills will no longer be a mystery. \nIt is not enough to be upset by social and economic inequality. We must understand it and struggle for socialism! This event is open to members and non-members alike. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Free Comedy Theater + Disaster Auction = The Perfect Night Out
DESCRIPTION:This fun\, FREE event is part theater\, part auction – and all help for hurricane victims. You’ll laugh\, you’ll feel hope\, you’ll experience the world class comedy of Ted & Co TheaterWorks… \nCome prepared to laugh out loud\, to bid on auction items (part of the performance)\, and to lend your support to a cause close to all our hearts: All funds raised will benefit the work of Mennonite Disaster Service restoring homes and hope for those affected by natural disaster. MDS is currently working in Texas\, Florida\, and Puerto Rico\, helping those affected by the 2017 hurricanes. \nGet your tickets soon – space is limited! \nAbout the show: \nThere are many Gospel stories of Jesus gathered around tables. There was food to eat and food for thought\, exploring who was invited to those tables and who showed up. The miracles of Jesus were sometimes ordinary stories with extraordinary results. \nTake a fresh look at the Gospel stories and discover that when uncorked\, these stories pour out sparkling drops of laughter such as Jesus must have found in the people he met along the way. Ted and Jeff have gathered these stories\, mixing in a pinch of humor\, a dollop of song and several servings of pasta with some cheese and wine on the side. \nBon Appetit! \nReserve your free tickets online today!

Brown Convention Center\, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas\, on Saturday\, September 1. A large\, militant counter-demonstration against the fascists will be held next to the Convention Center\, beginning at 10 am. We support our Muslim brothers’ and sisters’ right to hold their convention\, to exercise religious freedom\, and to live as they wish without fear of violence\, harassment\, or intimidation. \nOur counter-demonstration will have music\, chanting\, speakers\, and more\, and we will drown out the racism and religious bigotry of TPN\, Three-Percenters\, and other Far Right groups. This call for action is being issued by Houston Socialist Movement\, National Domestic Workers Alliance\, Refuse Fascism\, Socialist Alternative\, Young Communist League\, and other groups (list in formation). Another call for action has been issued by our friends in the Socialist Rifle Association and other groups. All of us will be working together on September 1 to defend the Muslim community and drive the fascists off the streets of Houston. \nPlease plan to join us on September 1. If you would like to get involved or would like more information\, please send us a message.

SUMMARY:Awakening the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston invites you to explore spirituality in nature with those of other faiths\, using the documentary The National Parks – America’s Best Idea\, as a source of inspiration. Since their inception\, the national parks have provided places for play\, for rest and for sanctuary. They are places that inspire us with their grandeur and at the same time draw us into an intimate relationship with the natural world. National parks give us time to pause\, to reflect\, to get outside of ourselves and yet also provide space to go deeply within ourselves. In these sacred spaces\, we experience nature and the Divine alike. National parks also afford us the time and space to consider our relationship with nature and how our individual and collective actions have a decided impact on these complex\, wondrous ecosystems that we are sharing. Please join in considering nature & spirituality thru the lens of the national parks with us! For more information about this interfaith environmental study\, please contact Lisa Brenskelle at gcs.lrc@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HARC People & Nature Speaker Series: Innovative Resilience Financing
DESCRIPTION:“Will we be Ready for the Next Harvey? Innovative Funding Strategies and Opportunities for Community Resilience” \nOn Wednesday\, September 12\, HARC will continue its People & Nature Speaker Series hosting an evening conversation with six national thought leaders on the topic of innovative resilience financing and the role that the public and private sectors can play to develop new community partnerships and diversified resilience funding mechanisms in Greater Houston. \nMore people are moving to the Houston-Galveston region every year while a decade of hurricanes\, floods and historic drought underscores the risks to the region’s future prosperity. Implementing strategies and projects to make Houston economically attractive\, while increasing resilience requires local investment. Public funds from federal\, state and local government source play an important role in rebuilding communities and infrastructure. However\, they are limited in their ability to support innovative resilience strategies to create a more livable\, nature-based and equitable Houston. \nHARC will host an evening “fishbowl dialogue” event with experts in resilience financing\, infrastructure and global and climate change: \n\nShannon Cunniff – Director of Coastal Resilience\, EDF\nJose Peralta – Director\, AON Risk Solutions\nJamie Rubin – CEO\, Meridiam North America\nPeter Schultz\, PhD – Vice President\, ICF\nStacy Swann – CEO and Founding Partner\, Climate Finance Advisors\nShalini Vajjhala\, PhD – Founder & CEO\, re:focus partners\n\nThe event\, to be held at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, Brown Auditorium\, will begin at 6:00 pm. Guests are invited to continue the conversation at the post-event reception. The reception\, featuring light appetizers\, beer\, and wine\, will conclude at 8:30. \nPlease contact Events@HARCresearch.org for information on group reservations or for any additional questions you may have.

SUMMARY:Special Presentation: Run Like the Devil
DESCRIPTION:In Person: Filmmaker Steve Mims \nThe MFAH hosts the Houston stop on the state-wide tour of this new documentary. Run Like the Devil chronicles the energetic and impassioned 2018 race for the U.S. Senate between Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas). Filmmaker Steve Mims takes a nonpartisan look at the candidates and their tireless efforts to communicate with voters across the Lone Star State. Campaign-trail interviews with Cruz and O’Rourke—interwoven with stories from political insiders including Mark McKinnon and Evan Smith—create a vivid\, timely\, and exhausting account of a uniquely Texan campaign. \nAbout the Filmmaker\nThe work of award-winning commercial director and independent filmmaker Steve Mims has screened internationally in festivals\, theatrically\, and on TV. His 2016 Starving the Beast documented the defunding and reform of public universities across America. “Please Re-elect Gerald\,” a 2016 political ad\, won numerous awards\, including a Lone Star Emmy. His 2011 documentary Incendiary: The Willingham Case won the SXSW Louis Black Award\, the Innocence Network Journalism Award\, and the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Media Award. Mims earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi and his master’s at the University of Texas at Austin.

SUMMARY:TCEQ and Valero Public Meeting on Hydrogen Cyanide
DESCRIPTION:Hartman Park                                                    9311 E Avenue P\nHouston\, Texas 77012 \nTEJAS(Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) has issued a call to action and Houston DSA EcoSocialists are responding!  \nValero has asked the TCEQ(Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) for an increase in the level of HYDROGEN CYANIDE emissions they can release\, specifically 512 tons. Valero also wants to stop tracking its BENZENE emissions reductions\, makes no sense right?  \nSo then let’s show up in solidarity with Manchester residents and tell TCEQ and Valero that we’re sick(literally) of disgustingly rich corporations killing everything on the planet in their pursuit of more wealth and power.  \nDemand that TCEQ say NO to Valero! \n-Hydrogen cyanide (AC) is a systemic chemical asphyxiant. It interferes with the normal use of oxygen by nearly every organ of the body. Exposure to hydrogen cyanide (AC) can be rapidly fatal. It has whole-body (systemic) effects\, particularly affecting those organ systems most sensitive to low oxygen levels: the central nervous system (brain)\, the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels)\, and the pulmonary system (lungs). Hydrogen cyanide (AC) is a chemical warfare agent (military designation\, AC). It is used commercially for fumigation\, electroplating\, mining\, chemical synthesis\, and the production of synthetic fibers\, plastics\, dyes\, and pesticides. Hydrogen cyanide (AC) gas has a distinctive bitter almond odor (others describe a musty “old sneakers smell”)\, but a large proportion of people cannot detect it; the odor does not provide adequate warning of hazardous concentrations. It also has a bitter burning taste and is often used as a solution in water. \n(from the CDC) \n-Benzene is known to cause cancer\, based on evidence from studies in both people and lab animals. The link between benzene and cancer has largely focused on leukemia and other cancers of blood cells.  \nLong-term exposure to benzene mainly harms the bone marrow\, the soft\, inner parts of bones where new blood cells are made. This can result in: Anemia (a low red blood cell count)\, which can cause a person to feel weak and tired. A low white blood cell count\, which can lower the body’s ability to fight infections and might even be life-threatening. A low blood platelet count\, which can lead to excess bruising and bleeding. \nBreathing in high doses of benzene can affect the nervous system\, which can lead to drowsiness\, dizziness\, headaches\, tremors\, confusion\, and/or unconsciousness. Consuming foods or fluids contaminated with high levels of benzene can cause vomiting\, stomach irritation\, dizziness\, sleepiness\, convulsions\, and rapid heart rate. In extreme cases\, inhaling or swallowing very high levels of benzene can be deadly. Exposure to benzene liquid or vapor can irritate the skin\, eyes\, and throat. Skin exposure to benzene can result in redness and blisters.  \n(from the ACS)
