DESCRIPTION:The Green New Deal\nWhat Does it Mean for Me and What Does it Mean for the Future?\nWe hope you’ll join us for our August Transition Houston meeting! Socializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nThere are moments in history when the world changes. Sometimes we don’t see it up close and in the moment it happens. Some examples in the history of this country are the Civil War\, the emancipation of slaves\, the civil rights movement\, human footprints on the moon……. \nThe New Deal in the 1940’s represented a shift towards social and economic equity for all Americans after the Great Depression. It was amplified in the 1960’s through the Great Society by the Johnson presidency to include marginalized Americans who were excluded from the American Dream. \nNow we have a visionary proposal called the New Green Deal. It is a marker for the framework necessary for legislation and policy to turn back global warming and build a green infrastructure for future generations. The Green New Deal seems to represent the fastest and most logical way to face a future of unspeakable fears. The Green New Deal is where the rubber meets the road. \nFailure is not an option. \nAbout Our Speakers\nJaime Lawson is a native Houstonian\, who works both professionally and within the community to raise awareness about sustainability and climate action. For the past 8 years\, she has worked as a Sustainability Consultant\, primarily in the commercial green building industry. Jaime works with local grassroots organizations to promote equity in sustainability and the need for urgent climate action. She is currently a Community Outreach Coordinator at the Houston Climate Movement\, and serves on the board for PSR Houston\, leading the environmental and climate action committee. \nJen Schmerling is the Deputy Director and head of Environment Texas’s clean energy program\, she focuses on building renewable distributed generation across Texas and advocating for clean air\, clean water\, and open spaces in any way she can. Her experience includes three years working in solar energy\, from building utility-scale solar plants to selling home-sized systems in rural Uganda. Since moving to Houston\, she has worked on studying automotive fleets and analyzing building efficiency. She has a Master’s in Engineering from Stanford University.

DESCRIPTION:MEDIA ADVISORY: \nRALLY AND PRESS CONFERENCE TO CALL FOR REGIONAL LEADERS TO DELAY VOTE ON $100 MILLION FOR THE I-45 EXPANSION \n(HOUSTON\, TX) – Community advocates and concerned residents will hold a rally and press conference on Tuesday\, July 23\, at 10:30 a.m. to urge Houston-Galveston Area Council’s (H-GAC) Transportation Policy Council (TPC) to delay voting on funding for Segment 2 of Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) controversial North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP)\, or the I-45 expansion. \nThe TPC is scheduled to vote at their monthly meeting on Friday\, July 26\, on TxDOT’s request for a $100 million down payment “to demonstrate the region’s desire for advancing” the rebuild of Segment 2 of I-45\, which spans from I-10 to North Loop 610. This funding commitment would signal support for the project as it is currently designed\, despite significant community concerns about the expansion’s adverse impacts on neighborhood history and heritage\, greenspace\, flooding\, housing\, jobs\, safety\, and air quality. It could also attract a match from the Texas Transportation Commission to fund the remainder of the $1.22 billion necessary for this section of the project. \nAccording to TXDOT’s Draft Environmental Impact Study\, the highway expansion “would cause disproportionately high and adverse impacts to minority or low-income populations.” Current plans for widening I-45 would\, according to TxDOT\, cause thousands of residents to lose their homes and the removal of more than 300 businesses impacting more than 20\,000 employees. Additionally\, the project impacts historical sites and 26 schools and daycare centers. \nAir Alliance Houston\, LINK Houston\, Greater Houston Coalition for Justice\, Make I-45 Better Coalition\, as well as concerned residents are calling for H-GAC TPC members not to rush this decision and to delay the vote until TxDOT addresses community concerns surrounding the project. Delaying the vote would allow time for TXDOT to complete a round of community engagement activities and planning in conjunction with the City of Houston; the latest series of community engagement is scheduled to begin in late August. The organizations and residents are asking the TPC to delay the vote until 2020\, after TXDOT finalizes the highway project’s Environmental Impact Statement. With the support of our dedicated volunteers\, our nonprofit created the first-ever VegFest Houston\, which debuted in 2011.  \nVegFest Houston was held at Pecore Hall in Montrose in 2011 and 2012\, and then moved to the larger Pershing Middle School campus in Bellaire for 2013 and 2014. The festival went on hiatus from 2015-2016 while our nonprofit organization launched exciting new outreach projects\, created additional annual events\, and expanded our fundraising. An even larger venue was also sought out in order to meet the needs of our growing vegan festival\, as well as a fresh new format. We were pleased to officially move to the Stafford Centre Convention Hall in 2017! Now\, we have expanded to an even larger venue for 2019 at Minute Maid Park! \nThis amazing\, diverse\, all-vegan community event is held right here in the nation’s 4th largest city. It’s no wonder\, since Houston is ranked the 4th “Most Veg-friendly City” in the nation as of 2012\, making us the top Texas Veg-friendly city! \nWe are Houston’s original vegan festival! The festival is produced entirely by volunteers from our nonprofit organization. Our popular event features vegan vendors and exhibitors\, family-friendly kids activities\, giveaways and more. VegFest Houston promotes an ethical\, compassionate and truly sustainable world for all. Ours is one of the most diverse vegan festivals in the nation!!! \n\nDid you know that VegFest Houston Vegan Community Festival of Texas was part of the early #VegFest movement? We were the first “VegFest” labeled vegan festival in Texas and our logo is one of those shown in this VegSource article about the history of The VegFest Phenomenon! DESCRIPTION:Trump’s relentless attacks on migrants are leading to more abuse\, neglect\, misery\, and deaths. It is time for people to take a stronger stand against this racist repression. The criminalization of migrants and militarization of the border has contributed to thousands of deaths in the past decade. Scores of migrants have died at the hands of the Trump administration. Families continue to be separated. And private migrant prisons are profiting from the government’s cruelty. \nAcquiescence in the opening of the Southwest Key child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue by most local officials is a bitter reminder that we cannot depend on politicians to end the attacks on migrants. We must recognize that the repression directed against migrants did not begin with the Trump administration. And history teaches us that it will take the power of the masses of people to stop this shameful mistreatment of our brothers and sisters from other countries. \nFree Los Ninos Coalition will hold a demonstration against SWK’s child detention center and call for an end to all raids\, detentions\, and deportions on Thursday\, July 4\, at 1 pm. This national holiday is the perfect time to point out how the systemic repression of migrants demonstrates that all the official rhetoric about “liberty and justice for all” is a lie. DESCRIPTION:Time to register for Peace Camp 2019!\nTo register\, click here: CLICK HERE \nPeace Camp is an alternative day camp\, from 9am – 3pm\, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga\, gardening\, special guests\, using puppets co-operative games\, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control\, racism\, LGBTQ issues\, PTSD\, and other more mature topics. Although several sessions are at churches\, the camp is not religious.
