DESCRIPTION:World Refugee Day: Presenting “When We Were Strangers”\nTHURSDAY\, JUNE 13 2019 7:00PM – 9:00PM \nIn celebration of World Refugee Day\, Independent Writer\, Kimberly Meyer is coupling a film screening of Soufra with the launching of her project “When We Were Strangers” – following the lives of nine single mother refugees in Houston\, which has been funded in part by a grant from Houston Arts Alliance. \nThe dynamic team behind this event includes: Plant It Forward\, 14 Pews\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and  Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston: Refugee Services\, and Taiba. A powerful front\, driving impact in Houston\, uniting efforts to create a multidimensional event for the Houston community. \nOpening reception will be catered by Syrian refugee\, Zahra Al Mohamed\, one of the nine refugees featured in the project. Zahra will be sourcing food from the Farmers of Plant It Forward\, which supports hard working refugee farmers\, the local economy\, and the creation of green space in Houston. Traditional music will be performed by Kurdish/Syrian refugee Mohamed Horo.  Included in the reception will be a short presentation of “When We Were Strangers” by Kimberly Meyer. Following the reception and presentation will be a screening of the film Soufra. \nThis event will share stories of refugees in the Houston community as well as those across borders in hopes of creating an experience where all walk away feeling a deeper sense of connection\, compassion\, and responsibility.

DESCRIPTION:Time to register for Peace Camp 2019!\nTo register\, click here: CLICK HERE\n\nPeace Camp is an alternative day camp\, from 9am – 3pm\, for children ages 5-18.  The focus will be on developing inner peace and building problem solving skills.  Yoga\, gardening\, special guests\, using puppets co-operative games\, and cooking are some of the activities planned.  Youth who are 13 and older will have a curriculum that deals with gun control\, racism\, LGBTQ issues\, PTSD\, and other more mature topics. Although several sessions are at churches\, the camp is not religious. DESCRIPTION:Core Dance\, a professional dance organization\, invites Houstonians of all ages and abilities to come together to dance for peace on Sunday\, June 2 from 10am to noon in Hermann Park.  Now in its 39thyear\, Planetary Danceis a simple dance that everyone can do co-created by Anna Halprin.  Known as the pioneer of the postmodern dance movement\, Halprin describes Planetary Danceas “a dance for promoting peace among people and peace with the Earth.”  Local dancers and drummers will invite those participating to walk\, run\, or stand in three concentric circles creating a moving mandala. DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join Transition Houston as we discuss Climate Change Solutions! \nBrad Carter will present the Nature of the Flood: Understanding Our Dynamic Rivers and Bayous on Tuesday\, May 7\, 2019 @ 6:30pm.\nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098.  \nWith a new hurricane season upon us\, our meeting will feature a presentation and Q&A by Dr. Brad Carter who will focus on the issue of flooding and understanding how our rivers and bayous play a role in mitigation and flood risk reduction. \nEvery year\, damage from storms – hurricanes\, intense rainstorms\, Nor’easters – makes the news as flood waters wash away structures\, roads\, and topsoil. Floods are natural events but their impacts are often unnecessarily magnified when a lack of understanding\, of the functions of wetlands results in their filling\, draining and development. \nClimate shapes where and how we live and the environment around us and the Houston Climate Movement is leading the way for local action! Texas\, and Houston in particular\, face unique risks and challenges due to the impacts of climate change\, from flooding to heat to droughts and more. \nWe hope you’ll be a part of the journey to address these issues. \nAbout Our Speaker\nDr. Carter received a PhD in Geology from North Carolina State University in 2006.  He has 12 years of professional experience working as a structural geologist in academia and the petroleum industry.  In academia\, Dr. Carter has taught courses in physical geology\, structural geology\, and hydrogeology and mentored student research projects. \nIn the petroleum industry\, his work has focused on deciphering the geologic framework and evolution of sedimentary basins around the world.  Outside of his professional work\, Dr. Carter recently completed Urban Harvest’s Permaculture Design Course and is focused on helping Houstonians become knowledgeable about Earth’s natural processes and how to work with nature to create a more sustainable Houston.

DESCRIPTION:Building Solid Relationships: At Home\, Work\, School\, Anywhere! is the title of this Nonviolent Communication event facilitated by CNVC Certified Trainer\, Bren Hardt\, long-time member of HPJC.  Staying present and grounded with skills to manage one’s emotions\, speaking with authenticity\, clarity and in a connecting (rather than disconnecting) way\, and listening with curiosity for both content and meaning are the skills of NVC – Nonviolent Communication.  NVC is a globally respected communication set of skills that is serving leaders around the world to be more effective and to build a culture of peace. Workshop will give you time to practice these valuable skills in pairs and small groups.  Offered 2 dates:  3/9 or 4/13.
