SUMMARY:Undeterred:  Community Resistance on the US/Mexico Border (film showing & meet-n-greet w/filmmaker)
DESCRIPTION:Undeterred is a documentary about community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca\, Arizona. Since NAFTA\, 9/11 and the Obama and Trump administrations border residents have been on the front-lines of the humanitarian crisis caused by increased border enforcement build up. Undeterred is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community\, caught in the cross-hairs of global geo-political forces\, have mobilized to demand our rights and to provide aid to injured\, oft times dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. The film was made by Eva Lewis\, a resident of Arivaca and long time member of People Helping People in the Border Zone (PHP). Undeterred was created in close collaboration with the Arivaca community and members of PHP.   Eva Lewis and other town members will be here to discuss the film. \n  \nThe Problem\n\nThe Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects Americans from random and arbitrary stops and searches.\nAccording to the government\, however\, these basic constitutional principles do not apply fully at our borders. Along this unusual path\, he became convinced that people need to be as well trained in waging peace as soldiers are in waging war.  Chappell is the Peace Literacy Director of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and the author of six books\, most recently Soldiers of Peace. SUMMARY:Emergency Demonstration Against SWK's Child Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:On February 14\, Mayor Turner announced the elimination of the most important obstacles to the opening of Southwest Key’s new child detention center at 419 Emancipation Avenue. His media advisory was misleading–it did not mention that a federal judge ruled against the City of Houston two months ago on the question of which permit is required. And now the administration’s previous expression of concern about sexual crimes\, abuse\, neglect\, and hundreds of other violations at SWK facilities seems to have disappeared! \nIn view of its awful record\, Southwest Key should not be allowed to house migrant children. The people of the most diverse city in the country have been opposing this facility since last June. And we must continue this struggle. We need to stop SWK from putting children at risk! The Free Los Niños Coalition will hold an emergency demonstration against SWK’s child detention center on Monday\, February 18\, at 5 pm. This will be the Coalition’s twelfth protest during the past eight months. The broadest possible participation is strongly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Third Coast Regional Conference Citizens' Climate Lobby
DESCRIPTION: The Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) will host its sixth annual Third Coast Regional\nConference for its Texas\, Louisiana\, and Mississippi volunteers on February 9\, 2019\,\nin Houston\,Texas.  With the theme “Uniting for Climate Solutions\,” the conference is\nopen to anyone who wants to move our country towards solving climate change.\n\n  This Conference follows a major breakthrough for CCL with the introduction of the\nEnergy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act in late 2018.The bill was the result of\nyears of work by CCL volunteers across the country and stands as the first national\n\,bipartisan-cosponsored carbon pricing bill in nearly a decade.\nConference attendees will explore strategies for transforming political divisions into\nsolidarity\, be trained in how to engage Congress effectively\,and receive expert\ninstruction about carbon reduction solutions and the impacts of climate change on\nthe Gulf Coast’s economy.\n\n  Featured speakers include Sam Daley-Harris\, author of “Reclaiming Our Democracy:\nHealing the Break Between People and Government” and Mark Reynolds\, Executive\nDirector of Citizens’ Climate Lobby\, as well as other energy and carbon pricing leaders.\nAttendees receive a bonus invitation to a screening of The Human Element the Friday\nevening before the conference\, which is being presented in partnership with EarthxFilm.\nAcclaimed photographer James Balog\,who is featured in the film\,will provide a Q&A after\nthe film.\n\nCitizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-profit\,non-partisan advocacy organization focused on\na national\, legislative solution to climate change. DESCRIPTION:Climate Change: It’s warming\, It’s Us\, We’re Sure\, It’s Bad\, We can fix it!\nWe hope you’ll join us for our first Transition Houston meeting of the New Year! \nOur meeting will feature a presentation and Q&A by Dr. Larry Kremer\, from Citizens Climate Lobby who will present the findings of the Fourth National Climate Assessment report which draws a direct connection between the warming atmosphere and the resulting changes that affect Americans’ lives\, communities\, and livelihoods\, now and in the future. \nClimate shapes where and how we live and the environment around us and the Houston Climate Movement is leading the way for local action! Texas\, and Houston in particular\, face unique risks and challenges due to the impacts of climate change\, from flooding to heat to droughts and more. We hope you’ll be a part of the journey to address these issues. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. \nAbout Our Speaker\nDr. Kremer obtained his PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City Utah and his BS in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a visiting fellow at the Nuclear Physics Institute in Amsterdam Netherlands where identified radioactive sulfur containing molecules produced in particle accelerators.  In post doctoral studies at Yale University he studied reaction products of high energy Tritium atoms with hydrocarbons.  His 38 year industrial career involved many aspects of the chemical and energy industries.  As Senior Technology Advisor at Baker Hughes\, he was involved in many areas including handling of hydrocarbons form hydraulic fracturing operations\, processing various feed stocks in refineries including biomass based feed stocks\, carbon capture and storage\, and reducing hazards handling hydrogen sulfide.  He worked on evaluating new technologies\, particularly from small stat up companies. \nFor many years he led the sessions on Desalting at the National AIChE conventions.  He was a Director of the Fuels and Petrochemicals section of AIChE.  He last spoke at an AIChE conference at the Spring Meeting in New Orleans in 2014. Since retiring\, he has been an advisor to companies in energy area and working on sustainability. He has over 50 publications and 19 issued US patents. \nAbout Citizens Climate Lobby\nThe Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) has been working hard to educate and lobby on behalf of climate change and thanks to hard work and support over many years\, bipartisan legislation is currently before the Congress! The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act of 2018 introduced in Congress by two Republicans and three Democrats. This historic bipartisan bill would enact carbon fee and dividend into law when passed.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Citizens Environmental Coalition (CEC) for two nights of environmental inspiration as we host the fifth Houston screening of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Tour! \n  \nA selection of films from the Wild & Scenic Film Festival\, North America’s largest environmental film festival\, will bring two hours of beautiful\, educational\, and inspiring films to the big screen at River Oaks Theatre on January 30 & 31\, 2019\, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm each night. \n  \nWe will show a different selection of films each night which cover a variety of issues. It is our hope to use the festival to increase community understanding of the connection we share with the planet and our roles as stewards of the environment in which we live.
