Professor Crawford will educate on the importance of biodiversity as well as the latest findings on biodiversity loss\, so that you can understand the issue. DESCRIPTION:December 30th\, 6pm\,  “Wiping The Tears of 7 Generations\,” \nAn hour long documentary about the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre and historical trauma and multi-generational grief that impacted 7 generations of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre descendants and the Wounded Knee community. The film at this event will be to commemorate the anniversary of the Massacre at Wounded Knee December 29th\, 1890 on the Pine Ridge reservation of the Lakota Sioux in South Dakota.\n\n\nFidel Moreno\, 28 year award winning ethno-graphic documentary filmmaker and border justice activist\, was the co-director and associate producer for this documentary\, produced in 1991 and will be present to lead the discussion and also share his experiences for the last 6 months in Phoenix\, Aho and Tucson\, AZ  in regards to undocumented immigrants\, human rights and border justice issues to raise public awareness\, encourage civic engagement and to raise some funds for travel to return to Tucson\, Ajo\, and Phoenix\, AZ as well as El Paso\, TX. \n\n\n\nFidel will be visiting detention camps and safe houses for undocumented immigrants crossing the U.S. & Mexico Border and delivering collected supplies of water\, food and children’s clothing. \nThere will be art for sale that has been donated by artists\, William Song\, John Benson and Ryan White to support his sacred activism and possible documentary on Border Issues and Justice related to undocumented immigrants and their families and children.

DESCRIPTION:Separation from a parent at Christmas time is difficult on any child but for the poor and innocent child\, separated by a two inch plate of glass\, it may be hardest of all. These blameless young enter a world of jailers and bars\, cold and frightening\, in a futile grasp at normalcy during perhaps the single most important family time of the year. \nThe emotional scars they experience and which may last a lifetime are ministered at Harris County Adult Detention Center by Santa Claus and several dozen elves who await these precious children as they walk out of the building. It is at this point that a miracle often occurs which can immediately be seen on the faces of these little ones. In the midst of the Fat Jolly Gentleman and piles of presents you can see their shaken faith in life return and a light of rekindled joy flicker in their eyes. \nJoin End Mass Incarceration Houston in association with Houston Peace and Justice Center and Bering United Methodist Church as we are blessed by the Angels at 1200 Baker Street in downtown Houston on Sunday December 23rd from 4 pm to 6 pm. \nToys may be dropped off during business hours at Bering United Methodist Church\, 1440 Harold Street Houston. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of the 95 enslaved prisoners whose bodies were discovered in Sugar Land this spring. We stand in solidarity with all the African-American men and women who were trapped in the horrific system of convict leasing here in Sugar Land and across the Southern United States. We will gather at 5 and light our candles at 5:30. \nBring family and friends. We hope to light at least 95 candles to represent each of the 95 individuals and raise awareness of this tragic chapter of our shared history.

The registered agent is Juliet Stipeche\, the Mayor’s point person on education. The board comprises three wealthy right wing benefactors: Trini Mendenhall\, Corbin Robertson Jr\, and Stephanie Paige. \nPaige is the education contact for ALEC\, a right wing takeover group that disguises the self interest of the wealthy as the advancement of society through philanthropy. This program is offered in partnership with The oH Project: Oral Histories of HIV/AIDS in Houston\, Harris County\, and Southeast Texas. \nThe morning program will include live music\, personal testimonials\, and guided reflection. Gregory Hamilton\, a community educator and advocate working at ASP Cares Pharmacy will share information on the state of the battle against HIV in Houston and Texas. Isis Torrente\, member of the Latino HIV Task Force\, Greater Houston chapter of the Positive Women’s Network\, and Ryan White Planning Council will speak on her experience within the HIV community in Houston. Moments of reflection will be led by Reverend Diane McGehee\, Senior Pastor of Bering Memorial UMC\, and music will be performed throughout by John Edward Ross on acoustic guitar. \nEstablished by the World Health Organization in 1988 as the first ever global health day\, World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st day of December each year. It is an occasion to reflect on the more than 35 million people who have died from HIV/AIDS since the virus was first identified in 1984\, and a time to consider how to better care for the 36.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS\, and their families\, friends and loved ones who have been deeply impacted. To learn more\, click here. \nAbout program participants:\nGregory Hamilton is a community educator and advocate\, and works at ASP Cares Pharmacy in Houston. From 1998 to 2000\, he worked for BEAT AIDS (Black Effort Against the Threat of AIDs) in San Antonio to provide HIV/AIDS education and free screenings to high-risk communities\, including injection drug users. In 2000\, he became a Patient Advocate at San Antonio AIDS Foundation\, helping patients gain access to medicines\, food\, and shelter\, and formed support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS. \nRev. Diane McGehee\, M. Div.\, J.D.\, is Senior Pastor of Bering Memorial UMC where ALL are welcome and celebrated\, no exceptions. She is an advocate for social justice on behalf of the LGBTQ community\, immigrants\, refugees\, returning citizens\, foster children\, human trafficking victims\, and all who need to know they are loved by God and of infinite worth just as they are. She graduated from Harvard Law School and Perkins School of Theology. Diane founded and directs the non-profit Together in Hope; was a founding board member of Houston Justice for Our Neighbors; and is an ALF Senior Fellow. \nJohn Edward Ross is a composer\, producer\, guitarist\, and educator. He built and owns Studio Sassafras where he writes\, records\, and engineers music. He has scored documentary and commercial films\, composed and performed for modern dance companies\, produced and recorded for jazz\, country\, rock\, R&B\, gospel\, rock\, and electronic artists\, written and arranged for choirs\, scored musicals\, and produced music for commercials. He has performed professionally as a guitarist since 1995. He teaches private music lessons and has developed a series of books and recordings for teaching guitar. He is the recipient of several artist grants and residencies. \nIsis Torrente has been active in the HIV/AIDS community for over five years\, since moving to Houston only six years ago. She has served as a volunteer interpreter and patient mentor at Thomas Street Health Center\, which is a local HIV public clinic. She is also an active member of the Latino HIV Task Force and a founding member of the Greater Houston chapter of the Positive Women’s Network. In January 2016\, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett appointed Isis to the Ryan White Planning Council where she helps design services for over 13\,000 people living with HIV in the Greater Houston area. \nThe oH Project (The Oral History Project) was founded in 2015 to collect\, preserve\, and make available the painful\, heroic\, and inspiring experiences of people impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Houston\, Harris County\, and Southeast Texas.  The organization is capturing the personal experiences of 100 long term survivors\, physicians\, activists\, religious and political leaders and others in order to preserve the personal and institutional history of Houston’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  These important materials is available to all\, including those who need source material for research and educational purposes\, at Rice University’s prestigious Woodson Research Center\, ranked among “the 20 most impressive special collections\,” according to Open Education Database.  The community is encouraged to offer themselves or recommend others as interview subjects for the project by filling out the form found at http://tiny.cc/ohreferral. DESCRIPTION:Black Friday offers the challenge to BUY NOTHING!  The Quaker testimonies of Simplicity\, Community and Stewardship encourage Friends to find creative ways to care for the earth and each other\, and we want to extend this opportunity to others in the community.  Creating a space to practice thinking together in a new way about how we place value on objects and services within our community seems like a worthwhile way to observe the day after Thanksgiving. \nTo get involved\, just come!   Bring a table\, shelf\, rug or blanket to display your goods or a sign that describes your service(s).   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME!  Children are often the best models of how this can work.  They have the ability to add value to an item by describing potential uses\, and the creativity to negotiate three-way trades. \nThere will be a designated area for “free” items that you are willing to give to whomever wants them.  Visitors may then use such items to barter and trade with if they wish.   At the end of the day all items remaining at the “Free Table” will be donated to the Women’s Center.
