DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the European Union\, the German Consulate General Houston\, and TCADP\, you are cordially invited to attend a special screening of the documentary film\, “True Conviction\,” followed by a panel discussion featuring Dallas County exonerees\, Christopher Scott and Steven Phillips. \n  \nThis event will take place at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) on Thursday\, November 15\, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium (A350) (One Main Street\, Houston\, TX 77002).* \nFree and open to the public.  RSVP here. \n  \nAbout the film \nFilmed in Dallas\, “True Conviction” explores the investigative and philanthropic work of the unlikeliest of teams: exonerees Christopher Scott\, Johnnie Lindsey\, and Steven Phillips\, who collectively spent more than sixty years in prison for crimes they did not commit. After their exonerations\, the three friends formed House of Renewed Hope to help other wrongfully convicted individuals and advocate for criminal justice reforms. \n  \n“True Conviction” premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and has screened throughout the country. The film follows the detectives as they investigate two cases\, including a 35-year-old capital murder conviction in Harris County.  This is the first public screening event in Houston. \n  \n*The Auditorium is located on the 3rd floor (Main Street Level) of the Academic Building at UHD.   The Visitor Parking Garage is located at 201 Girard Street. \n  \nQuestions? Finally\, recycling and reuse of materials comes to Houston. \nPlease join us for the upcoming Transition Houston meeting as we hear from Caroline Kostak\, the owner of the RePurpose Depot and Keith Koski\, the manager of the City of Houston’s ReUse Warehouse who will present the emerging market for used building materials and household products. Both will share details of their work helping people rebuild their homes and lives after Hurricane Harvey. \nSocializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center\, 1827 W Alabama St\, Houston\, TX 77098. Map to location \nCaroline Kostak is the owner of RePurpose Depot\, a residential deconstruction and reclaimed building materials company. She is also a LEED AP-Homes and a LEED Green Rater and helps people achieve LEED certifications for their homes. She is the vice chair and Green Schools Committee chair for the US Green Building Building Council Texas Gulf Coast region. Prior to deciding to save the world through Green Building\, Caroline was a Flight Controller at NASA\, helping to build the International Space Station. In her spare time\, she teaches leadership development and yoga. \nKeith Koski has worked in design and construction for most of his adult life. He has striven to minimize waste in his projects as much as possible. Since 2009\, Keith has had the privilege to manage the City of Houston Building Materials Reuse Warehouse\, a component of the Solid Waste Management Department. The Reuse Warehouse accepts building materials from individuals and companies\, diverts them from landfills\, and gives them to non-profit organizations for free. \n\nWe hope to see you there! DESCRIPTION:Arguably\, James Blue’s most ambitious project\, this complex documentary was originally made in five one-hour episodes as an interactive public television series. The sixth episode\, which summarized the series\, will be screened. Blue and renowned architect Adele Santos take us on a tour of 1970s Houston\, a divided city\, growing in the midst of an oil boom. Skyscrapers going up\, unemployment going down. One thousand new residents were arriving per week. But the filmmakers see two cities. Visible Houston is populated by well-educated citizens earning high wages with no state or income taxes. Invisible Houston\, for whom the most basic city services did not exist\, was inhabited by poorly educated citizens earning low wages. Blue was founder of Rice University Media Center and a leader in the movement to democratize media access and production across America\, including Houston’s Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP)\, a media arts organization founded in 1977.\n\nAdele Naude Santos will be in attendance

SUMMARY:Guidance for the Health Care Perplexed
DESCRIPTION:We all know what a huge rip off our health care system is.  But aside from just the extortion level pricing\, the system is rigged so well it is nearly impossible for even a prudent and well informed consumer to navigate and avoid nasty billing surprises.  Just a few examples: You make an effort to go to an in-network hospital and receive one or more out-of-network bills from doctors or other hospital staff\, often for astronomical sums of money\, and were given no warning of such.  You receive over a dozen different bills from one hospital stay in our fragmented system\, and they keep you in limbo for months\, sometimes even a year or longer\, after your procedure/discharge\, not knowing if you will receive another unexpected bill.  It is rare that any medical provider will disclose prices for a procedure\, etc. beforehand\, and often will not make clear whether or not it is covered by insurance.   Come to our gathering\, vent your frustrations\, and tell your horror stories\, or those of a family member or friend\, in dealing with the shenanigans of our health care system\, and then lets discuss how we can fight back.

DESCRIPTION:This year the walk will again be along the Heights Esplanade Trail on Heights Boulevard\, a beautiful setting for a walk of compassion with friends! We invite everyone to participate by registering to walk\, making a donation\, or volunteering. Your efforts and generosity will help with programs that provide direct relief\, promote sustainable agriculture\, and provide education and right livelihood opportunities for women. \nJoin the Houston team here\, and your friends can sponsor your walk to raise funds to Feed the hungry. Just follow the prompts to create your own account. \nThe 3.1 mile walk will begin at the Houston Zen Center\, located at 1605 Heights Blvd\, Houston\, TX 77008. We will then walk south down Heights Boulevard towards I-10 and turn around to end the walk at the Zen Center. Participants may turn around at any point to return to the Zen Center as needed. \nPlease bring hats\, water bottles\, sunblock or anything else you might need for the walk. DESCRIPTION:Nervous about biking in Houston? Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church and Bike Houston invite you to a free Community Bike Safety Course where you’ll gain the confidence to cycle safely around town. The course begins with 90 minutes of classroom instruction at Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church\, followed by 90 minutes of drills in Rice University parking lot and then a leisurely ride around the neighborhood to practice our skills on the road. Instruction is provided by certified instructors from Bike Houston and is suitable for all ages. You may attend all or just a portion of the class. Please register on www.eventbrite.com. DESCRIPTION:What a year it has been for West Street Recovery. We started with bikes and boats and now have five staff members who rebuild homes\, help residents navigate a complex and incredibly difficult recovery\, connect families to large rebuild aid groups \, and advocate for policies that promote an equitable recovery and create lasting benefit for people of Houston. Our advocacy has gotten us invited to the Texas State Senate to testify on the FEMA Preps program\, sent families to DC to testify\, and brought the BBC\, PBS\, and 60 Minutes to Northeast Houston. \nPlease join us to celebrate our first birthday as an organization with a lovely evening at Finca Tres Robles in 2nd Ward. The night will include a farm tour\, dinner including local meat\, produce and locally brewed beverages\, and stories from the West Street team and some of the people we have worked with. It’s has been an honor to grow in relationships with families in Northeast Houston\, grassroots groups\, and all of the people and organizations who have supported us along the way. For people of faith and for those concerned with peace in the Middle East\, an inclusive Jerusalem is a must. So\, what do we need to understand about the current political realities in Jerusalem\, the implications of theological frameworks of the city\, and current US and foreign policy? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinally\, what steps can we\, as faith leaders take together and in our own networks to advance peace in this region? \nIn addition to responding to this urgent moment\, The Jerusalem Conference is\, in part\, a follow up from the 2016 Atlanta Summit at the Carter Center hosted by President Carter\, which brought together key representatives from 26 denominations as well as numerous faith-based organizations working towards a just peace in Israel/Palestine. This one day conference offers a timely exploration of Jerusalem as key to peace in the Middle East. SUMMARY:Camp Congress for Girls Houston Fall 2018
DESCRIPTION:Camp Congress for Girls Houston Fall 2018 is a leadership program that introduces girls ages 9 to 15 to politics. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives\, the US Senate or for the presidency. She will create her own campaign with a platform\, campaign slogan\, campaign finance plan\, campaign marketing materials and a political ad for YouTube. All campers will register to vote and then vote in an election. Once elected to Congress and sworn in\, the newly installed members of Congress will learn how to introduce a bill\, debate the merits of the bill\, lobby fellow legislators\, collaborate with the Executive branch and finally vote on the proposed bill. Camp will culminate with a ceremonial signing of the bill by our Ms. President. Girl Scouts participating in Camp Congress for Girls Houston will earn a Citizen Legacy Badge for participation. All participants will receive Certificate of Completion.\n\nThe camp day runs from 8am to 5pm. The camp fee includes all program materials\, snacks\, lunch and a GIP logo t-shirt. No refunds will be given for camp registration fees unless the organizer cancels or reschedules the session. DESCRIPTION:Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to a monthly environmental education web meeting series whose theme in 2018 is Stewardship. In September\, we welcome Jordan Fengel\, Executive Director of STAR (State of Texas Alliance for Recycling).  For nearly 50 years\, recycling has been a staple practice throughout many American communities. A recent policy change by the Chinese government in 2017\, enacted in 2018\, banning many recyclable materials from being imported\, has created a conundrum in the recycling industry. The US has relied on China to process our mixed plastic and mixed paper recyclables for the last 20+ years. With China set to eliminate all imports of recyclable materials by 2020\, Jordan will discuss what STAR is doing to turn the tide. He will explain how STAR sees this crisis more as a fantastic opportunity to build American processing and manufacturing markets that have been long needed.
